Expansion Planning for Renewable Integration in Power System of Regions with Very High Solar Irradiation显示文摘In this paper,we address the long-term generation and transmission expansion planning for power systems of regions with very high solar irradiation. We target the power systems that currently rely mainly on thermal generators and that aim to adopt high shares of renewable sources. We propose a stochastic programming model with expansion alternatives including transmission lines, solar power plants(photovoltaic and concentrated solar),wind farms, energy storage, and flexible combined cycle gas turbines. The model represents the longterm uncertainty to characterize the demand growth, and the short-term uncertainty to characterize daily solar, wind, and demand patterns. We use the Saudi Arabian power system to illustrate the functioning of the proposed model for several cases with different renewable integration targets. The results show that a strong dependence on solar power for high shares of renewable sources requires high generation capacity and storage to meet the night demand. | Musfer Alraddadi Antonio J.Conejo Ricardo M.Lima | 2021 | Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy2021,9,3: | 2

Comparative visual analytics for assessing medical records with sequence embedding显示文摘Machine learning for data-driven diagnosis has been actively studied in medicine to provide better healthcare.Supporting analysis of a patient cohort similar to a patient under treatment is a key task for clinicians to make decisions with high confidence. However, such analysis is not straightforward due to the characteristics of medical records:high dimensionality, irregularity in time, and sparsity. To address this challenge,we introduce a method for similarity calculation of medical records. Our method employs event and sequence embeddings. While we use an autoencoder for the event embedding,we apply its variant with the self-attention mechanism for the sequence embedding. Moreover,in order to better handle the irregularity of data,we enhance the self-attention mechanism with consideration of different time intervals. We have developed a visual analytics system to support comparative studies of patient records. To make a comparison of sequences with different lengths easier, our system incorporates a sequence alignment method.Through its interactive interface, the user can quickly identify patients of interest and conveniently review both the temporal and multivariate aspects of the patient records. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our design and system with case studies using a real-world dataset from the neonatal intensive care unit of UC Davis. | Rongchen Guo Takanori Fujiwara Yiran Li Kelly M.Lima Soman Sen Nam K.Tran Kwan-Liu Ma | 2020 | Visual Informatics2020,4,2: | 1
SARS-CoV-2 productively infects primary human immune system cells in vitro and in CoviD-19 patients显示文摘The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CovV-2)infection is associated with a hyperinflammatory state and lymphocytopenia,a hallmark that appears as both signature and prognosis of disease severity outcome.Although cytokine storm and a sustained inflammatory state are commonly associated with immune cell depletion,it is still unclear whether direct SARS-Cov-2 infection of immune cells could also play a role in this scenario by harboring viral replication. We found that monocytes,as well as both B and T lymphocytes, were susceptible to SARS-Cov-2 infection in vitro, accumulating double-stranded RNA consistent with viral RNA replication and ultimately leading to expressive T cell apoptosis. In addition, flow cytometry and immunofluorescence analysis revealed that SARS-Cov-2 was frequently detected in monocytes and B lymphocytes from coronavirus disease 2019(CoVID-19)patients.The rates of SARS-Cov-2-infected monocytes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from CoVID-19 patients increased over time from symptom onset, with SARS-CoV-2-positive monocytes,B cells, and CD4+T lymphocytes also detected in postmortem lung tissue. These results indicated that SARS-CoV-2 infection of blood-circulating leukocytes in covID-19 patients might have important implications for disease pathogenesis and progression, immune dysfunction, and virus spread within the host. | Marjorie C.Pontelli italo A.Castro Ronaldo B.Martins Leonardo La Serra Flavio P.Veras Daniele C.Nascimento Camila M.Silva Ricardo S.Cardoso Roberta Rosales Rogério Gomes Thais M.Lima Juliano P.Souza Brenda C.Vitti Diego B.Caetite Mikhael H.F.de Lima Spencer D.Stumpf Cassandra E.Thompson Louis-Marie Bloyet Juliana E Toller-Kawahisa Marcela C.Giannini Leticia P.Bonjorno Marial.F.Lopes Sabrina S.Batah Li Siyuan Rodrigo Luppino-Assad Sergio C.L.Almeida Fabiola R.Oliveira Maira N.Benatti Lorena L.F.Pontes Rodrigo C.Santana Fernando C.Vilar Maria Auxiliadora-Martins Pei-Yong Shi Thiago M.Cunha Rodrigo T.Calado JoséC.Alves-Filho Dario S.Zamboni Alexandre T.Fabro Paulo Louzada-Junior Rene D.R.Oliveira Sean P.J.Whelan Fernando Q.Cunha Eurico Arruda | 2022 | Journal of Molecular Cell Biology2022,14,4: | 1
Cardiorespiratory fitness and cancer in women:A prospective pilot study显示文摘Purpose:To assess the association between cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF)and the incidence and mortality from cancer in women, and to evaluate the potential public health implications for cancer prevention. Methods:Maximal exercise testing was performed in a pilot cohort of 184 women(59.3 ± 15.2 years)who were followed for 12.0 ± 6.9 years.Cox hazard models adjusted for established cancer risk factors and accounting for competing events were analyzed for all-type cancer incidence and mortality from cancer.Population-attributable risks and exposure impact number were determined for low CRF(<5 metabolic equivalents(METs))as a risk factor. Results:During the follow-up,11.4% of the participants were diagnosed with cancer and 3.2% died from cancer.CRF was inversely and independently associated with cancer outcomes. For every 1-metabolic equivalent increase in CRF,there was a 20% decrease in the risk of cancer incidence(hazard ratio(HR)= 0.80,95% confidence interval(CI):0.69-0.92;p=0.001)and a 26% reduction in risk of cancer mortality(HR = 0.74,95%CI:0.61-0.90;p=0.002).The population-attributable risks of low CRF were 11.6% and 14% for incidence and mortality of cancer, respectively, and the respective exposure impact numbers were 8 and 20.Conclusion:Greater CRF was independently associated with a lower risk of incidence and mortality from cancer in women.Screening for low CRF as a cancer risk factor and referring unfit individuals to a supervised exercise program could be a public health strategy for cancer prevention in middle-age women. | Baruch Vainshelboim Ricardo M.Lima Jonathan Myers | 2019 | Journal of Sport and Health Science2019,8,5: | 0
Isotopic and geochemical constraints for a Paleoproterozoic accretionary orogen in the Borborema Province,NE Brazil:Implications for reconstructing Nuna/Columbia显示文摘The Alto MoxotóTerrane of the Borborema Province presents a wide exposure of Paleoproterozoic crust, but unlike other continental blocks of South America, its orogenic history is strongly obliterated by late Neoproterozoic deformation.New isotopic and geochemical studies were conducted in mafic-ultramafic(Fazenda Carmo Suite)and granitic-gneissic rocks(Riacho do Navio Suite)within the terrane. The former present zircon U-Pb crystallization ages at ca.2.13 Ga,whereas Sm-Nd data suggests a juvenile origin via melting of early Paleoproterozoic to Archean peridotitic sources.Geochemical data for these rocks are compatible with tholeiitic magmas with some degree of crustal contamination and trace element distribution points to a continental-arc related setting interpreted as remnants of the early stages of subduction. In contrast, the Riacho do Navio Suite was emplaced at ca.2.08 Ga and has highly negativeεNd(t)values indicating crustal reworking. The suite displays calc-alkali to alkali-calcic and ferroan geochemical signatures compatible with Cordilleran magmas. In addition,trace-element distribution as well as discriminant diagrams suggest that the precursor magmas were generated during the later stages of a continental arc or in a syn-collisional setting.Based on our results,we suggest that the studied units might represent missing pieces of a Paleoproterozoic accretionary orogen that formed the crustal framework of the Alto MoxotóTerrane, and that this represents a block associated with assembly of the Nuna/Columbia supercontinent, which is now largely hidden within the Neoproterozoic orogenic belts of West Gondwana. | Lauro Cézar M.de Lira Santos Geysson A.Lages Fabrício A.Caxito Elton L.Dantas Peter A.Cawood Haroldo M.Lima Felipe Jda Cruz Lima | 2022 | Geoscience Frontiers2022,13,5: | 0
