| 5 | Burrow morphology of Uca uruguayensis and Uca leptodactylus(Decapoda:Ocypodidae)from a subtropical mangrove forest in the western Atlantic显示文摘The continuous excavation of burrows by fiddler crabs generates bioturbation in the sediment,which can be estimated from burrow morphology.The aim of the present study was to describe the burrow morphology of Uca uruguayensis and U.leptodactylus and its relationship with demography of resident individuals and to estimate the level of bioturbation in the sediment generated by each species.For all individuals from each of the 2 species,sex was determined and the carapace width(CW;mm)measured.Burrows were characterized according to burrow diameter(BD;mm),maximum burrow depth(MBD;mm)and burrow volume(BV;cm^(3)).The density of each species in the study area was also evaluated.In both species,the males were larger and occupied burrows with higher BV compared to females.Differences between sexes in relation to the burrow characteristics might reflect sexual dimorphism within the group and are probably related to the fact that males use the burrows for mating.BD and BV showed significant positive relationships with the size of resident crabs.The amount of sediment removed per burrow was estimated from mean BV:10.78 cm^(3)of sediment/burrow for U.uruguayensis and 12.38 cm^(3)of sediment/burrow for U.leptodactylus.Despite the density and depth differences between the 2 species,the similarity in burrow volume suggests that U.uruguayensis and U.leptodactylus present the same importance in terms of the bioturbation process.Burrow morphology is highly associated with characteristics of the occupant,although extrinsic factors should also be considered,and its description can provide estimates on the bioturbation generated by Uca species in mangrove forests. | Glauco B.O.MACHADO João B.L.GUSMÃO-JUNIOR Tânia M.COSTA | 2013 | Integrative Zoology2013,8,3: | 0 |
| 6 | Numerical Analysis of a Combined Heat and Power Generation Technology from Residual Biomasses显示文摘Energy valorization of organic waste material is nowadays an assessed practice of circular economy.Combined heat and power(CHP)technologies based on biomass gasification represent viable substitutes to traditional energy conversion units based on combustion,whose need has recently experienced a huge growth,due to the increasing concerns about the release of greenhouse gases(GHGs)emissions and the related effects on climate changes.At present,only a few solutions have yet achieved a level of full development for commercialization.One of them is the system developed by CMD,the CMD ECO20,made of a gasifier,a syngas cleaning system and a spark ignition internal combustion engine working as a co-generator.In the present work,a numerical model is developed to study this system into detail and search for optimal controlling parameters.The simulation relies on a combined use of the Thermoflex?environment and a proper one-dimensional(1D)model of the engine module built within GT-Suite?.An original contribution is given to the turbulent combustion model that accounts for the laminar flame speed of the specific syngas.The numerical model,that covers the entire biomass-to-energy conversion process,is validated under real operative conditions.The final purpose of the work is the optimization of input parameters,as the initial biomass moisture content,the equivalence ratio at the gasifier or the timing of spark advance,to maximize the system electrical energy output. | C.Caputo D.Cirillo M.Costa M.La Villetta R.Tuccillo R.Villani | 2018 | Journal of Energy and Power Engineering2018,12,6: | 0 |
| 7 | Recalcitrant cell wall of Ulva lactuca seaweed is degraded by a single ulvan lyase from family 25 of polysaccharide lyases显示文摘Green macroalgae,e.g.,Ulva lactuca,are valuable bioactive sources of nutrients;but algae recalcitrant cell walls,composed of a complex cross-linked matrix of polysaccharides,can compromise their utilization as feedstuffs for monogastric animals.This study aimed to evaluate the ability of pre-selected Carbohydrate-Active enZymes(CAZymes)and sulfatases to degrade U.lactuca cell walls and release nutritive compounds.A databank of 199 recombinant CAZymes and sulfatases was tested in vitro for their action towards U.lactuca cell wall polysaccharides.The enzymes were incubated with the macroalga,either alone or in combination,to release reducing sugars and decrease fluorescence intensity of Calcofluor White stained cell walls.The individual action of a polysaccharide lyase family 25(PL25),an ulvan lyase,was shown to be the most efficient in cell wall disruption.The ulvan lyase treatment,in triplicate measures,promoted the release of 4.54 g/L(P<0.001)reducing sugars,a mono-and oligosaccharides release of 11.4 and 11.2 mmol/100 g of dried alga(P<0.01),respectively,and a decrease of 41.7%(P<0.001)in cell wall fluorescence,in comparison to control.The ability of ulvan lyase treatment to promote the release of nutritional compounds from alga biomass was also evaluated.A release of some monounsaturated fatty acids was observed,particularly the health beneficial 18:1c9(P<0.001).However,no significant release of total fatty acids(P>0.05),proteins(P?0.861)or pigments(P>0.05)was found.These results highlight the capacity of a single recombinant ulvan lyase(PL25 family)to incompletely disrupt U.lactuca cell walls.This enzyme could enhance the bioaccessibility of U.lactuca bioactive products with promising utilization in the feed industry. | Monica M.Costa Luís B.Pio Pedro Bule Vania A.Cardoso Marlene Duarte Cristina M.Alfaia Diogo F.Coelho Joana A.Bras Carlos M.G.A.Fontes Jose A.M.Prates | 2022 | Animal Nutrition2022,,2: | 0 |
