1Aspects of forest restoration and hydrology:the hydrological function of litter显示文摘Although forests play important roles in the hydrological cycle,there is little information that relates the water retention capacity of litter in areas under passive restoration,especially in Cerrado savannas.This study relates litter levels to water holding capacity and effective water retention among forest fragments under different passive restoration stages:46,11,and 8 years to better understand litter hydrological functions in the Cerrado.Water retention capacity and effective water retention capacity of litters(unstructured materials,branches and leaves)in the field were monitored on a monthly basis.Total litter accumulation at 46 years was significantly higher than that of the other succession stages.Unstructured litter mass was significantly higher than that of leaves and branches.The 46-year stage had the highest water holding capacity in the leaf fraction,followed by unstructured material and branches.Although the water holding capacity was lower in the oldest resto-ration,this site showed the highest efficiency under field conditions.The process was quickly reestablished,as the 11-year restoration showed results closer to that for the 46-year stage in comparison to the area at 8 years.Thus,passive restoration plays a key role in soil water mainte-nance due to the influence of litter in Cerrado savannas.Deforestation and the imminent need of restoring degraded sites,highlight the need for further studies focused on bet-ter understanding of the process of forest restoration and its temporal effect on soil water recovery dynamics.Luara Castilho Pereira Leonardo Balbinot Marcelle Teodoro Lima Julieta Bramorski Kelly Cristina Tonello 2022Journal of Forestry Research2022,33,2:3

5Aspects of forest restoration and hydrology:linking passive restoration and soil–water recovery in Brazilian Cerrado显示文摘Although the scientific knowledge about some associations between physical parameters of the soil is consolidated,studies focused on investigating the dynamics of forest restoration processes and the structure of soils remain incipient.The study area is located in Cerrado and is called as Private Natural Heritage Reserve(RPPN)Águas Perenes Forest(perennial water forest)and was selected as a“High Conservation Value Forest”,provides scope to investigate the soil physical properties recovery on passive restoration sites,with different ages but with the same land use history.So,the aim was to investigate the soil density,moisture,penetration resistance and infiltration rate with long-term from old(FA,46 year-old),medium(FB,11 year-old)and young(FC,8 year-old)passive restoration sites.It was observed differences in soil density,as well as in soil moisture,resistance to penetration and infiltration rate.Mean densities recorded for FA,FB and FC were 1.38,1.48 and 1.53 g cm^(-3),respectively.FA recorded higher mean soil moisture(14.9%)than FB(11.5%)and FC(10.0%),whereas mean soil resistance to penetration was increased from FA(0.87 MPa)to FB(0.91 MPa)and FC(1.10 MPa).The average infiltration rate was almost similar in FA and FB(FA=76.43 mm h^(-1);FB=77.48 mm h^(-1))and approximately 39%higher than FC(55.79 mm h^(-1)).Thus,although soil density and moisture were different in each passive restoration site,11 year-old passive restoration site showed similar resistance to penetration and infiltration rate to the old(46 years)passive restoration site.These features allowed seeing improvements in hydrological maintenance in the soil and revealed that passive restoration in Cerrado is able to improve the physical features on a soil presenting similar texture,climate and management history.Luara Castilho Pereira Leonardo Balbinot Gregorio Nolazco Matus Herly Carlos Teixeira Dias Kelly Cristina Tonello 2021Journal of Forestry Research2021,32,6:0
6Choosing among correlative, mechanistic, and hybrid models of species’ niche and distribution显示文摘Different models are available to estimate species’niche and distribution.Mechanistic and correlative models have different underlying conceptual bases,thus generating different estimates of a species’niche and geographic extent.Hybrid models,which combining correlative and mechanistic approaches,are considered a promising strategy;however,no synthesis in the literature assessed their applicability for terrestrial vertebrates to allow best-choice model considering their strengths and trade-offs.Here,we provide a systematic review of studies that compared or integrated correlative and mechanistic models to estimate species’niche for terrestrial vertebrates under climate change.Our goal was to understand their conceptual,methodological,and performance differences,and the appli-cability of each approach.The studies we reviewed directly compared mechanistic and correlative predictions in terms of accuracy or estimated suitable area,however,without any quantitative analysis to support comparisons.Contrastingly,many studies suggest that instead of comparing approaches,mechanistic and correlative methods should be integrated(hybrid models).However,we stress that the best approach is highly context-dependent.In-deed,the quality and effectiveness of the prediction depends on the study’s objective,methodological design,and which type of species’niche and geographic distribution estimated are more appropriate to answer the study’s issue.Luara TOURINHO Mariana M.VALE 2023Integrative Zoology2023,18,1:0
