| 8 | Helicobacter pylori associated gastric intestinal metaplasia:Treatment and surveillance显示文摘Gastric cancer(GC) is one of the leading causes of cancer related death in the world, particularly in East Asia. According to the Correa's cancer cascade, noncardia GC is usually developed through a series of mucosal changes from non-atrophic gastritis to atrophic gastritis(AG), intestinal metaplasia(IM), dysplasia and adenocarcinoma. Atrophic gastritis and IM are therefore generally considered to be pre-neoplastic gastric lesions. Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection is an important initiating and promoting step of this gastric carcinogenesis cascade. Emerging long-term data showed that eradication of H. pylori reduced the risk of subsequent cancer development. It however remains confusing whether eradication of the bacterium in individuals with pre-neoplastic gastric lesions could regress these changes as well as in preventing cancer. Whilst H. pylori eradication could likely regress AG, the presence of IM may be a point of no return in this cascade. Hence, surveillance by endoscopy may be indicated in those with extensive IM or those with incomplete IM, particularly in populations with high GC risk. | 9 | New blood markers detection technology:A leap in thediagnosis of gastric cancer显示文摘Gastric cancer(GC) is still one of the malignant tumors with high morbidity and mortality in the world, with a 5-year survival rate of less than 30%. GC is often either asymptomatic or causes only nonspecific symptoms in its early stages, whereas when the symptoms manifest, the cancer has usually reached an advanced stage, which is one of the main causes of its relatively poor prognosis. Hence, the main focus of GC research has been on discovering new tools and technology to predict, screen and diagnose g C at an early stage which would prompt early treatment. With the tremendous advances in the OMICS technology, serum proteomics has been in the limelight of cancer research over the last few decades and has steered the development of several methods helping to understand the mechanisms underlying gastric carcinogenesis, resulting in the identification of a large number of molecular targets such as circulating tumor cells(CTCs), cell free DNA(cf DNA) and cell tumor DNA(ct DNA) and their sub-molecular components such as mi RNA, that show great promise as GC biomarkers. | 10 | A study of internal solitary waves observed on the continental shelf in the northwestern South China Sea显示文摘Based on in-situ time series data from the acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and thermistor chain in Wenchang area, a sequence of internal solitary wave (ISW) packets was observed in September 2005, propagating northwest on the continental shelf of the northwestern South China Sea (SCS). Corresponding to different stratification of the water column and tidal condition, both elevation and depression ISWs were observed at the same mooring location with amplitude of 35 m and 25 m respectively in different days. Regular arrival of the remarkable ISW packets at approximately the diurnal tidal period and the dominance of diurnal internal waves in the study area, strongly suggest that the main energy source of the waves is the diurnal tide. | 11 | Assessing Vulnerability to Drought Based on Exposure,Sensitivity and Adaptive Capacity:A Case Study in Middle Inner Mongolia of China显示文摘In this paper,we proposed a framework for evaluating the performance of ecosystem strategies prepared for enhancing vulnerability reduction in the face of hazards due to climate change.The framework highlights the positive effects of human activities in the coupled human and natural system(CHANS) by introducing adaptive capacity as an evaluation criterion.A built-in regional vulnerability to a certain hazard was generated based upon interaction of three dimensions of vulnerability:exposure,sensitivity and adaptive capacity.We illustrated the application of this framework in the temperate farming-grazing transitional zone in the middle Inner Mongolia of the northern China,where drought hazard is the key threat to the CHANS.Specific indices were produced to translate such climate variance and social-economic differences into specific indicators.The results showed that the most exposed regions are the inner land areas,while counties located in the eastern part are potentially the most adaptive ones.Ordos City and Bayannur City are most frequently influenced by multiple climate variances,showing highest sensitivity.Analysis also indicated that differences in the ability to adapt to changes are the main causes of spatial differences.After depiction of the spatial differentiations and analysis of the reasons,climate zones were divided to depict the differences in facing to the drought threats.The climate zones were shown to be similar to vulnerability zones based on the quantitative structure of indexes drafted by a triangular map.Further analysis of the composition of the vulnerability index showed that the evaluation criteria were effective in validating the spatial differentiation but potentially ineffective because of their limited time scope.This research will be a demonstration of how to combine the three dimensions by quantitative methods and will thus provide a guide for government to vulnerability reduction management. | LIU Xiaoqian WANG Yanglin PENG Jian Ademola K BRAIMOH YIN He | 2013 | Chinese Geographical Science2013,23,1: | 17 |

| 15 | Comparative evaluation of intragastric bile acids and hepatobiliary scintigraphy in the diagnosis of duodenogastric reflux显示文摘AIM:To assess the diagnostic value of a combination of intragastric bile acids and hepatobiliary scintigraphy in the detection of duodenogastric reflux(DGR).METHODS:The study contained 99 patients with DGR and 70 healthy volunteers who made up the control group.The diagnosis was based on the combination of several objective arguments:a long history of gastric symptoms(i.e.,nausea,epigastric pain,and/or bilious vomiting) poorly responsive to medical treatment,gastroesophageal reflux symptoms unresponsive to protonpump inhibitors,gastritis on upper gastrointestinal(GI) endoscopy and/or at histology,presence of a bilious gastric lake at > 1 upper GI endoscopy,pathologic 24-h intragastric bile monitoring with the Bilitec device.Gas-tric juice was aspirated in the GI endoscopy and total bile acid(TBA),total bilirubin(TBIL) and direct bilirubin(DBIL) were tested in the clinical laboratory.Continuous data of gastric juice were compared between each group using the independent-samples Mann-Whitney U-test and their relationship was analysed by Spearman's rank correlation test and Fisher's linear discriminant analysis.Histopathology of DGR patients and 23 patients with chronic atrophic gastritis was compared by clinical pathologists.Using the Independent-samples Mann-Whitney U-test,DGR index(DGRi) was calculated in 28 patients of DGR group and 19 persons of control group who were subjected to hepatobiliary scintigraphy.Receiver operating characteristic curve was made to determine the sensitivity and specificity of these two methods in the diagnosis of DGR.RESULTS:The group of patients with DGR showed a statistically higher prevalence of epigastric pain in comparison with control group.There was no significant difference between the histology of gastric mucosa with atrophic gastritis and duodenogastric reflux.The bile acid levels of DGR patients were significantly higher than the control values(Z:TBA:-8.916,DBIL:-3.914,TBIL:-6.197,all P < 0.001).Two of three in the DGR group have a significantly associated with each other(r:TBA/DBIL:0.362,TBA/TBIL:0.470,DBIL/TBIL:0.737,all P < 0.001).The Fisher's discriminant function is followed:Con:Y = 0.002TBA + 0.048DBIL + 0.032TBIL 0.986;Reflux:Y = 0.012TBA + 0.076DBIL + 0.089TBIL-2.614.Eighty-four point zero five percent of original grouped cases were correctly classified by this method.With respect to the DGR group,DGRi were higher than those in the control group with statistically significant differences(Z =-5.224,P < 0.001).Twenty eight patients(59.6%) were deemed to be duodenogastric reflux positive by endoscopy,as compared to 37 patients(78.7%) by hepatobiliary scintigraphy.CONCLUSION:The integrated use of intragastric bile acid examination and scintigraphy can greatly improve the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnosis of DGR. | Teng-Fei Chen Praveen K Yadav Rui-Jin Wu Wei-Hua Yu Chang-Qin Liu Hui Lin Zhan-Ju Liu | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,14: | 12 |
| 16 | A proposed surface resistance model for the Penman-Monteith formula to estimate evapotranspiration in a solar greenhouse显示文摘Greenhousing is a technique to bridge season gap in vegetable production and has been widely used worldwide. Calculation of water requirement of crops grown in greenhouse and determination of their irrigation schedules in arid and semi-arid regions are essential for greenhouse maintenance and have thus attracted increased attention over the past decades. The most common method used in the literature to estimate crop evapotranspiration(ET) is the Penman-Monteith(PM) formula. When applied to greenhouse, however, it often uses canopy resistance instead of surface resistance. It is understood that the surface resistance in greenhouse is the result of a combined effect of canopy restriction and soil-surface restriction to water vapor flow, and the relative dominance of one restriction over another depends on crop canopy. In this paper, we developed a surface resistance model in a way similar to two parallel resistances in an electrical circuit to account for both restrictions. Also, considering that wind speed in greenhouse is normally rather small, we compared three methods available in the literature to calculate the aerodynamic resistance, which are the r_a^1 method proposed by Perrier(1975a, b), the r_a^2 method proposed by Thom and Oliver(1977), and the r_a^3 method proposed by Zhang and Lemeu(1992). We validated the model against ET of tomatoes in a greenhouse measured from sap flow system combined with micro-lysimeter in 2015 and with weighing lysimeter in 2016. The results showed that the proposed surface resistance model improved the accuracy of the PM model, especially when the leaf area index was low and the greenhouse was being irrigated. We also found that the aerodynamic resistance calculated from the r_a^1 and r_a^3 methods is applicable to the greenhouse although the latter is slightly more accurate than the former. | 17 | Bone tissue engineering via nanostructured calcium phosphate biomaterials and stem cells显示文摘Tissue engineering is promising to meet the increasing need for bone regeneration. Nanostructured calcium phosphate(CaP) biomaterials/scaffolds are of special interest as they share chemical/crystallographic similarities to inorganic components of bone. Three applications of nano-CaP are discussed in this review:nanostructured calcium phosphate cement(CPC); nano-CaP composites; and nano-CaP coatings. The interactions between stem cells and nano-CaP are highlighted, including cell attachment, orientation/morphology, differentiation and in vivo bone regeneration. Several trends can be seen:(i) nano-CaP biomaterials support stem cell attachment/proliferation and induce osteogenic differentiation, in some cases even without osteogenic supplements;(ii) the influence of nano-CaP surface patterns on cell alignment is not prominent due to non-uniform distribution of nano-crystals;(iii) nano-CaP can achieve better bone regeneration than conventional CaP biomaterials;(iv) combining stem cells with nano-CaP accelerates bone regeneration, the effect of which can be further enhanced by growth factors; and(v) cell microencapsulation in nano-CaP scaffolds is promising for bone tissue engineering. | 20 | Pea3 expression promotes the invasive and metastatic potential of colorectal carcinoma显示文摘AIM:To investigate the function of Pea3 in colorectal carcinoma(CRC)invasion and metastatic potential.METHODS:The expression of Pea3 during clinical progression of human CRC was investigated using Oncomine Research Edition.To assay Pea3 expression in established CRC cell lines,we performed western blotting of cell lysates.We employed sh RNA-mediated knockdown of Pea3 in HCT116(HCT)and LS174T CRC cells which was confirmed by real-time quantitative PCR(q PCR)and western blotting.Transwell invasion assays,MTS proliferation assays,anoikis assays,and fluorometric matrix metalloprotease(MMP)assays wereperformed to determine the effects of Pea3 knockdown on invasion,proliferation,anoikis and MMP activity in CRC cells in vitro.Alterations in epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)and matrix metalloprotease(MMP)m RNA levels were determined by q PCR.CRC cells were injected into the flanks of nude mice to generate xenografts and tumor growth monitored with serial calliper measurements.To assay metastatic potential,CRC cells were injected into the spleen of nude mice,and histological analysis performed on the livers 21 d later.RESULTS:We demonstrated that reduction of Pea3expression in CRC cells significantly impaired their invasive capacity(HCT.sh Pea3,0.28±0.04 fold,P<0.01;LS.sh Pea3,0.15±0.04 fold;SW.sh Pea3,0.23±0.03,P<0.01),reduced anoikis resistance(HCT.sh Pea3 75.4%±1.9%viable cells vs HCT.sh Ctrl 88.6%±0.6%viable cells,P<0.01;LS.sh Pea3 71.7%±0.5%viable cells vs LS.Ctrl 89.6%±0.3%viable cells,P<0.005,but had no effect on proliferation(HCT.sh Ctrl AUC 5098±123 vs HCT.sh Pea3 5689±151,P<0.05;LS.sh Ctrl AUC 5600±324.1 vs LS.sh Pea3 6423±400,P<0.05).In vivo,HCT.sh Pea3 and HCT.sh Ctrl tumour xenografts grew at a similar rate(HCT.sh Pea3 2.64±0.82 fold vs HCT.sh Ctrl 2.88±0.80 fold,P>0.05).In keeping with a pro-metastatic function for Pea3 in CRC,several EMT markers and MMPs were downregulated in sh Pea3-expressing cells,suggesting that Pea3 may exert its effects through these processes.A reduction in overall MMP activity was observed in HCT.sh Pea3 cells compared to their control counterparts(HCT.sh Pea30.61±0.04 fold,P<0.005).This translated in vivo to the complete absence of metastases in the livers of mice that were grafted with CRC cells lacking Pea3.Conversely,CRC cells expressing Pea3 formed liver metastases in all mice.CONCLUSION:Our study implicates Pea3 as a mediator of metastases,and provides a biological rationale for the adverse prognosis associated with elevated Pea3 expression in human CRC. | Aruz Mesci Samira Taeb Xiaoyong Huang Rishi Jairath Darshan Sivaloganathan Stanley K Liu | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,46: | 7 |
