| 1 | The biological content of ballast water in China:A review显示文摘The introduction of species through the release of ballast water has become a major threats to marine biodiversity and ecosystem function worldwide.China is one of the top trading countries,yet little is known about exotic species in the ballast water of ships coming to its ports.Here,we review the biological surveys of ballast water from major Chinese ports.These surveys reveal that 40 species of nonindigenous phytoplankton that,belong to 25 genera and five phyla,have been observed in ballast water.The dominant species are diatoms and dinoflagellates.There were 17 red-tide causing species observed,five of which are noxious algae.Seventeen species of non-indigenous zooplankton have been reported,most of them(11)copepods.There were also 22 species of pathogenic bacteria recorded,including Vibrio alginolyticus,V.carchariae,V.parahaemolyticus,and V.vulnificus.These studies show that species introduction through ballast water potentially a serious threat to the ecology and human health in China.More research,including collaboration with the international community,is urgently needed to address this problem. | Huixian Wu Chen Chen Qiong Wang Junda Lin Junzeng Xue | 2017 | Aquaculture and Fisheries2017,2,6: | 11 |
| 2 | Water,organic matter,nitrogen and phosphorus contents in sediment of a large-scale mariculture area in the Zhelin Bay of eastern Guangdong Province,China显示文摘The Zhelin Bay is one of the most important bays for large-scale mariculture in Guangdong Province, China. Owing to the increasing human population and the expanding mariculture in the last two decades, the ecological environment has greatly changed with frequent harmful algal blooms. A monthly survey of water content, organic matter (TOM), and various forms of nitrogen and phosphorous in sediment from July 2002 to July 2003 in the bay was conducted. The results showed that the water content was correlated significantly with TOM and various forms of nitrogen and phosphorus and can be used as proxy for quick and rough estimate of these factors in the future surveys. TOM was also correlated significantly with various forms of nitrogen and phosphorus, indicating that it was one of the key factors affecting the concentrations and distributions of nitrogen and phosphorus in the investigated waters. Average total Kjeldhal nitrogen (TkN) content was(1 113.1±382.5)μg/g and average total phosphorus (TP) content was(567.2±223.3)μg/g, and both were much higher than those of similar estuaries in China and elsewhere. Average nitrogen and phosphorus tended to be higher inside than outside the bay, higher at aquaculture than non-aquaculture areas, and higher at fish-cage culture than oyster culture areas, suggesting that large-scale mariculture inside the bay played an important role in the eutrophication of the Zhelin Bay. Various forms of nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were higher during the warm season (July—September), which was due to the increased decomposition and concentration of organic matter resulted from the fast growth and high mortality of the cultured species. Compared with July 2002, TkN and TP contents were much higher in July 2003, in consonance with the eutrophication of the Zhelin Bay. Because exchangeable phosphorus (Ex-P), iron-bounded phosphorus (Fe-P) and organic phosphorus (OP) combined accounted for 34.3% of the TP and authigenic phosphorus (Au-P) accounted for 49.2% of the TP, biological phosphorus (BP) that includes Ex-P, Fe-P, OP, and a portion of Au-P, thus accounted for 34.3% to 83.5% of the TP in the Zhelin Bay, which was within the percentage range, but with a high absolute value among the estuaries. Au-P was the most important species of phosphorus and accounted for 49.2% of the TP during the investigation. | 3 | Polyculture of the lined seahorse,Hippocampus erectus Perry,1810 with two species of macroalgae in aquaria显示文摘A two-month study was conducted to test the effects of macroalgae on the growth and survivorship of juvenile lined seahorse(Hippocampus erectus) in aquaria. Twenty-day old seahorses were cultured in the tanks with green alga Chaetomorpha linum,red alga Gracilaria tikvahiae,green plastic artificial plant(stargrass) ,and black plastic net,respectively. Increases in wet mass and standard length for the seahorses were significantly higher in the tanks with macroalgae than those without macroalgae. The seahorse survivorships in the two macroalgal treatments were also significantly higher than those of the two treatments without macroalgae. In the treatments with macroalgae,the DO and pH were higher than those without marcoalgae. During the experiment,the color of seahorses was changed to certain extent. In the green background(the treatments with C. linum and stargrass) ,24.1%-28.4% of black seahorses decreased over time;whereas in the black(plastic net) or brown(G. tikvahiae) background treatments,14.1%-16.3% of yellow seahorses decreased over time,for matching that of the background. Furthermore,the survival rate of seahorse was correlation with DO and pH,and strong correlation with standard length,wet mass and CF. | 11 | Deficiency of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 sensitizes mouse liver to diethylnitrosamine and arsenic toxicity through inducing apoptosis显示文摘Background and Aim:Pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4(PDK4)is a metabolism switch that regulates glucose oxidation and the tricarboxylic acid cycle(TCA cycle)in the mitochondria.Liver detoxifies xenobiotics and is constantly challenged by various injuries.This study aims at understanding how the loss of the metabolism regulator PDK4 contributes to liver injuries.Methods:Wild-type(WT)and Pdk4 knockout(Pdk4-/-)mice of different ages were examined for spontaneous hepatic apoptosis.Juvenile or adult mice of two genotypes were insulted by diethylnitrosamine(DEN),arsenic,galactosamine(GalN)/lipopolysaccharide(LPS),anti-CD95(Jo2)antibody or carbon tetrachloride(CCl4).Liver injury was monitored by blood biochemistry test.Apoptosis was determined by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling(TUNEL)staining,poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase(PARP)cleavage,and caspase activity assay.Inflammatory response was determined by nuclear factor(NF)-kB activation and the activation of NF-kB target genes.Primary hepatocytes were isolated and cell viability was evaluated by MTS assay.Results:We showed that systematic Pdk4-/-in mice resulted in age-dependent spontaneous hepatic apoptosis.PDK4-deficiency increased the toxicity of DEN in juvenile mice,which correlated with a lethal consequence and massive hepatic apoptosis.Similarly,chronic arsenic administration induced more severe hepatic apoptosis in Pdk4-/-mice compared to WT control mice.An aggravated hepatic NF-kB mediated-inflammatory response was observed in Pdk4-/-mice livers.In vitro,Pdk4-deficient primary hepatocytes were more vulnerable to DEN and arsenic challenges and displayed higher caspase activity than wild type cells.Notably,hepatic PDK4 mRNA level was remarkably reduced during acute liver failure induced by GalN/LPS or Jo2 antibody.The diminished PDK4 expression was also observed in CCl4-induced acute liver injury.Conclusions:PDK4 may contribute to the protection from apoptotic injury in mouse liver. | Jonathan Choiniere Matthew Junda Lin Li Wang Jianguo Wu | 2018 | Liver Research2018,2,2: | 1 |

| 16 | Designing Electrochemical Nanoreactors to Accelerate Li_(2)S_(1/2) Three-Dimensional Growth Process and Generating More Li_(2)S for Advanced Li–S Batteries显示文摘With advantages of low costs and high energy density,Li–S batteries are considered as one of the most promising energy storage devices.However,Li_(2)S_(2) with a high dissociation energy and insulative properties is hard to convert into Li_(2)S,resulting in underutilization of sulfur capacity.Herein,Co-Mo_(2)C@C yolk–shell spheres as nanoreactors were designed to confront this challenge rationally.The Co-Mo_(2)C@C-induced Li_(2)S_(1/2) nucleation and growth in the three-dimensional process and the cathode produced more Li_(2)S after full discharge.Experimental studies and theoretical calculations reveal that the conversion barrier from Li_(2)S_(2) into Li_(2)S was lowered while the diffusion of lithium ions and electron transfer accelerated when using the Co-Mo_(2)C@C catalyst.Based on the above advantages,the Co-Mo_(2)C@C/S cathode exhibits a high reversible capacity and excellent cyclic stability,such as an initial specific capacity of 1200 mAh g^(−1) at 0.1 C with 709 mAh g^(−1) at 1.0 C after 1000 cycles with a low capacity fading rate of 0.04%per cycle.Even at high densities of 3.0 C and 5.0 C,the specific capacities are 647.6 and 557.7 mAh g^(−1) after 400 cycles,respectively.Impressively,it also shows ca.770 and 900 mAh g^(−1) at 0.2 C after 50 cycles with high sulfur loadings of 4.2 and 5.1 mg cm−2,respectively.The present work may provide new insights into the design of nanoreactors to promote Li_(2)S_(1/2) growth in a three-dimensional process and accelerate conversion from solid Li_(2)S_(2) to solid Li_(2)S in high performance Li–S batteries. | Junhao Li Kaixiang Shi Jiajie Pan Junda Pan Yongxian Lin Kaixin Wang Hao Li Jinyun Liao Huafeng Dong Quanbing Liu | 2023 | Renewables2023,1,3: | 0 |

| 18 | Invasion and Morphological Variation of the Non- Indigenous Barnacle Chthamalus challengeri(Hoek, 1883) in Yangshan Port and its Surrounding Areas显示文摘Invasive species generally possess unique characteristics that allow them to survive the invasion process in order to establish and spread in new habitats. Successful invaders must resist both physical and physiological stresses associated with the changing environment. A common littoral barnacle, Chthamalus challengeri Hoek, 1883(Crustacea, Cirripedia), which is native to Japan, South Korea and northern China, has become established in the high-littoral zone adjacent to Yangshan Port, Shanghai, China. A comparison of the morphology of Chthamlus species from Zhoushan archipelago with previous description indicates the occurrence of C. challengeri. The new immigrant becomes a dominant species in certain high-intertidal habitats of the adjacent area to of Yangshan Port. C. challengeri was found in part of sampling sites in Zhoushan in 2010; however, it dispersed to all the eleven sampling sites in 2012. Densities of C.challengeri had increased over 10 times in the last 2 years, with the highest mean value reaching 39533 ± 6243 ind. m-2 in the new habitat.
