| 1 | Humification characterization of biochar and its potential as a composting amendment显示文摘Biochar has received increasing attention due to its applications as a soil amendment. Here, the chemical properties of solid and water-extractable fractions of four biochar samples were investigated. The results showed that wood biochar and bamboo biochar samples were 60%–80% more hydrophobic than those of rice husk biochar and rice husk ash. In addition, the acidity was 3.88 mmol/g from the total functional groups and 1.03 mmol/g from the carboxyl groups/lactones/phenols found in the wood biochar sample, which were about 1.5 times greater than those of the bamboo biochar sample. These functional groups could be used to determine the sorptive capacity of biochar for ionic solutes and water content and to increase the degradation of compost organics. The wood biochar sample was found to have the most humification materials(fulvic acid-like material + humic acid-like material) in the water-extractable fraction, which was 3–10 times higher than that in the rice husk biochar and rice husk ash; humified materials were not detected in the bamboo biochar sample. Humification materials in biochar may be involved in increasing the proportion of humic acid-like materials in humic-like substances within the compost product. | 2 | Fate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in a full-scale restaurant food waste treatment plant:Implications of the roles beyond heavy metals and mobile genetic elements显示文摘Is our food safe and free of the crisis of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance (AR)?And will the derived food waste (FW) impose AR risk to the environment after biological treatment? This study used restaurant FW leachates flowing through a 200 tons-waste/day biological treatment plant as a window to investigate the fate of antibiotics and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) during the acceptance and treatment of FW.Sulfonamides (sulfamethazine,sulfamethoxazole) and quinolones (ciprofloxacin,enrofloxacin,ofloxacin) were detected during FW treatment,while tetracyclines,macrolides and chloramphenicols were not observable.ARGs encoding resistance to sulfonamides,tetracyclines and macrolides emerged in FW leachates.Material flow analysis illustrated that the total amount of antibiotics (except sulfamethazine) and ARGs were constant during FW treatment processes.Both the concentration and total amount of most antibiotics and ARGs fluctuated during treatment,physical processes (screening,centrifugation,solid-liquid and oil-water separation) did not decrease antibiotic or ARGs concentrations or total levels permanently;the affiliated wastewater treatment plant appeared to remove sulfonamides and most ARGs concentrations and total amount.Heavy metals Ni,Co and Cu were important for disseminating antibiotics concentrations and MGEs for distributing ARGs concentrations.Humic substances (fulvic acids,hydrophilic fractions),C-associated and N-associated contents were essential for the distribution of the total amounts of antibiotics and ARGs.Overall,this study implied that human food might not be free of antibiotics and ARGs,and FW was an underestimated AR pool with various determinants.Nonetheless,derived hazards of FW could be mitigated through biological treatment with well-planned daily operations. | Pinjing He Zhuofeng Yu Liming Shao Yizhou Zhou Fan Lü | 2019 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2019,31,11: | 7 |
| 3 | GENETIC DIVERSITY AMONG CHINESE SIKA DEER (CERVUS NIPPON) POPULATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CHINESE AND JAPANESE SIKA DEER显示文摘Sika deer (Cervus nippon) is a cervid endemic to mainland and insular Asia and endan-gered. We analyzed variation in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region for four subspecies to understand the genetic diversity, population structure and evolutionary history in China. 335 bp were se-quenced and eight haplotypes were identified based on 25 variable sites among the populations. Sika deer in China showed lower genetic diversity, sug-gesting a small effective population size due to habi-tat fragmentation, a low number of founder individu-als, or the narrow breeding program. AMOVA analy-sis indicated that there was significant genetic subdi-vision among the four populations, but no correlation between the genetic and geographic distance. Phy-logenetic analyses also revealed that Chinese sika deer may be divided into three genetic clades, but the genetic structure among Chinese populations was inconsistent with subspecies designations and pre-sent geographic distribution. | 4 | Importance of storage time in mesophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste显示文摘Storage was used as a pretreatment to enhance the methanization performance of mesophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste. Food wastes were separately stored for 0, 1,2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 12 days, and then fed into a methanogenic reactor for a biochemical methane potential(BMP) test lasting up to 60 days. Relative to the methane production of food waste stored for 0–1 day(285–308 m L/g-added volatile solids(VSadded)), that after2–4 days and after 5–12 days of storage increased to 418–530 and 618–696 m L/g-VSadded,respectively. The efficiency of hydrolysis and acidification of pre-stored food waste in the methanization reactors increased with storage time. The characteristics of stored waste suggest that methane production was not correlated with the total hydrolysis efficiency of organics in pre-stored food waste but was positively correlated with the storage time and acidification level of the waste. | 5 | Sequential slip transfer of mixed-character dislocations across Σ3 coherent twin boundary in FCC metals: a concurrent atomistic-continuum study显示文摘Sequential slip transfer across grain boundaries(GB)has an important role in size-dependent propagation of plastic deformation in polycrystalline metals.For example,the Hall–Petch effect,which states that a smaller average grain size results in a higher yield stress,can be rationalised in terms of dislocation pile-ups against GBs.In spite of extensive studies in modelling individual phases and grains using atomistic simulations,well-accepted criteria of slip transfer across GBs are still lacking,as well as models of predicting irreversible GB structure evolution.Slip transfer is inherently multiscale since both the atomic structure of the boundary and the long-range fields of the dislocation pile-up come into play.In this work,concurrent atomistic-continuum simulations are performed to study sequential slip transfer of a series of curved dislocations from a given pile-up onΣ3 coherent twin boundary(CTB)in Cu and Al,with dominant leading screw character at the site of interaction.A Frank-Read source is employed to nucleate dislocations continuously.It is found that subject to a shear stress of 1.2 GPa,screw dislocations transfer into the twinned grain in Cu,but glide on the twin boundary plane in Al.Moreover,four dislocation/CTB interaction modes are identified in Al,which are affected by(1)applied shear stress,(2)dislocation line length,and(3)dislocation line curvature.Our results elucidate the discrepancies between atomistic simulations and experimental observations of dislocation-GB reactions and highlight the importance of directly modeling sequential dislocation slip transfer reactions using fully 3D models. | Shuozhi Xu Liming Xiong Youping Chen David L McDowell | 2016 | npj Computational Materials2016,,1: | 4 |

| 7 | Flow analysis of major and trace elements in residues from large-scale sewage sludge incineration显示文摘Increase of sewage sludge(SS)has led to the construction of more incineration plants,exacerbating to the production of SS incineration residues.However,few studies have considered the mass balance of elements in large-scale SS incineration plants,affecting the residues treatment and utilization.In this study,flow analysis was conducted for major and trace elements in the SS,the fly ash(sewage sludge ash,SSA)and bottom ash from two large-scale SS incineration plants.The elemental characteristics were compared with those of coal fly ash(CFA),and air pollution control residues from municipal solid waste incineration(MSWIA),as well as related criteria.The results showed that the most abundant major element in SSA was Si,ranging from 120 to 240 g/kg,followed by Al(76–348 g/kg),Ca(26–113 g/kg),Fe(35–80 g/kg),and P(26–104 g/kg),and the trace elements were mainly Zn,Ba,Cu,and Mn.Not all the major elements were derived from SS.Most trace elements in the SS incineration residues accounted for 82.4%–127%of those from SS,indicating that SS was the main source of trace elements.The partitioning of heavy metals in the SS incineration residues showed that electrostatic precipitator ash or cyclone ash with high production rates were the major pollutant sinks.The differences in some major and trace elements could be indicators to differentiate SSA from CFA and MSWIA.Compared with related land criteria,the pollutants in SSA should not be ignored during disposal and utilization. | Siyuan Yu Hua Zhang Fan Lü Liming Shao Pinjing He | 2021 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,4: | 2 |
| 8 | Ammonium-dependent regulation of aerobic methane-consuming bacteria in landfill cover soil by leachate irrigation显示文摘The impacts of landfill leachate irrigation on methane oxidation activities and methane-consuming bacteria populations were studied by incubation of landfill cover soils with leachate and(NH 4) 2 SO 4 solution at different ammonium concentrations.The community structures and abundances of methane-oxidizing bacteria(MOB) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria(AOB) were examined by PCRDGGE and real-time PCR.Compared with the pure(NH 4) 2 SO 4 solution,leachate addition was found to have a positive effect on methane oxidation activity.In terms of the irrigation amount,ammonium in leachate was responsible for the actual inhibition of leachate.The extent of inhibitory effect mainly depended on its ammonium concentration.The suppression of the predominant methaneconsuming bacteria,type I MOB,was responsible for the decreased methane oxidation activity by ammonium inhibition.Methaneconsuming bacteria responded diversely in abundance to ammonium.The abundance of type I MOB decreased by fivefold;type II MOB showed stimulation response of fivefold magnification upon the first addition but lessened to be lower than the original level after the second addition;the amount of AOB was stimulated to increase for 20-30 times gradually.Accumulated nitrate from nitrification strengthened the ammonium inhibition on type I and type II MOB,as a result,repetitive irrigation was unfavorable for methane oxidation. | Fan Lü Pinjing He Min Guo Na Yang Liming Shao | 2012 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,4: | 2 |
