A numerical simulation study on mechanical behaviour of coal with bedding planes under coupled static and dynamic load显示文摘To investigate the bedding influence on coal mechanical behaviour in underground environments such as coal or rock burst, simulations of dynamic SHPB tests of pre-stressed coal specimens with different bedding angles were carried out using a particle flow code 2-dimensional(PFC2D). Three impact velocities of 4, 8 and 12 m/s were selected to study dynamic behaviours of coal containing bedding planes under different dynamic loads. The simulation results showed that the existence of bedding planes leads to the degradation of the mechanical properties and their weakening effect significantly depends on the angle h between the bedding planes and load direction. With h increaseing from 0° to 90°, the strength first decreased and subsequently increased and specimens became most vulnerable when h was 30° or 45°.Five failure modes were observed in the specimens in the context of macro-cracks. Furthermore, energy characteristics combined with ultimate failure patterns revealed that maximum accumulated energy and failure intensity have a positive relation with the strength of specimen. When bedding planes were parallel or perpendicular to loading direction, specimens absorbed more energy and experienced more violent failure with increased number of cracks. In contrast, bedding planes with h of 30° or 45° reduced the specimens' ability of storing strain energy to the lowest with fewer cracks observed after failure. | Lihai Tan Ting Ren Xiaohan Yang Xueqiu He | 2018 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2018,28,5: | 7
Effects of gravel mulch on aeolian transport:a field wind tunnel simulation显示文摘The shape, size and coverage of gravels have significant impacts on aeolian sand transport. This study provided an understanding of aeolian transport over the gravel mulching surfaces at different wind velocities by means of a mobile wind tunnel simulation. The tested gravel coverage increased from 5% to 80%,with a progressive increment of 5%.The gravels used in the experiments have three sizes in diameter.Wind velocities were measured using 10 sand-proof pitot-static probes, and mean velocity fields were obtained and discussed. The results showed that mean velocity fields obtained over different gravel mulches were similar. The analysis of wind speed patterns revealed an inherent link between gravel mulches and mean airflow characteristics on the gravel surfaces. The optimal gravel coverage is considered to be the critical level above or below which aeolian transport characteristics differ strongly.According to the present study, the optimal gravel coverage was found to be around 30% or 40%.Threshold velocity linearly increased with gravel coverage.Sand transport rate first increased with height above the wind tunnel floor(Hf),reaching a peak at some midpoint, and then decreased. | KeCun ZHANG WeiMin ZHANG LiHai TAN ZhiShan AN Hao ZHANG | 2015 | Journal of Arid Land2015,7,3: | 5
Multi-scale pore fractal characteristics of differently ranked coal and its impact on gas adsorption显示文摘Well-developed pores and cracks in coal reservoirs are the main venues for gas storage and migration. To investigate the multi-scale pore fractal characteristics, six coal samples of different rankings were studied using high-pressure mercury injection(HPMI),low-pressure nitrogen adsorption(LPGA-N2),and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)test methods.Based on the Frankel,Halsey and Hill(FHH)fractal theory, the Menger sponge model,Pores and Cracks Analysis System(PCAS),pore volume complexity(D_(v)),coal surface irregularity(Ds)and pore distribution heterogeneity(D_(p))were studied and evaluated, respectively. The effect of three fractal dimensions on the gas adsorption ability was also analyzed with high-pressure isothermal gas adsorption experiments. Results show that pore structures within these coal samples have obvious fractal characteristics.A noticeable segmentation effect appears in the Dv1and Dv2fitting process, with the boundary size ranging from 36.00 to 182.95 nm,which helps differentiate diffusion pores and seepage fractures. The D values show an asymmetric U-shaped trend as the coal metamorphism increases, demonstrating that coalification greatly affects the pore fractal dimensions. The three fractal dimensions can characterize the difference in coal microstructure and reflect their influence on gas adsorption ability.Langmuir volume(V_(L))has an evident and positive correlation with Dsvalues, whereas Langmuir pressure(P_(L))is mainly affected by the combined action of Dvand Dp.This study will provide valuable knowledge for the appraisal of coal seam gas reservoirs of differently ranked coals. | Zhongbei Li Ting Ren Xiangchun Li Ming Qiao Xiaohan Yang Lihai Tan Baisheng Nie | 2023 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2023,33,4: | 2

Morphological variation of star dune and implications for dune management: a case study at the Crescent Moon Spring scenic spot of Dunhuang, China显示文摘Aerial photographs and 3-D laser scans of a 90-m high star dune at the Crescent Moon Spring scenic spot in Dunhuang,China, are used to investigate the changes in dune morphology on timescales from months to decades. The result revealed that relative-equilibrium airflow strength in three wind directions of northeast, west and south was an important condition for the stability of star dunes with limited migration.Transverse and longitudinal airflows exerted a crucial impact on variation processes of star dune morphology.Controlled by transverse airflows, the easterly winds, the east side was dominated by wind erosion;and strong deposition occurred on the south-south-east arm with a maximum deposition rate of 0.44 m/a in the 46-a monitoring period, causing the east side becoming steep and high.Controlled by longitudinal airflows, the westerly winds, the west-north-west side was mainly eroded and the north arm migrated from west to east with a rate of 0.30 m/a,causing the dune slope becoming gentle and elongate. The local air circulation(southerly winds)exerted a significant impact on the development process of the star dune.Due to the influence of human activities, the south side present surface processes from a concave profile to a convex profile in 46 a,which is a potential threat to the Crescent Moon Spring. The results indicate that rehabilitating the airflow field at most is a crucial strategy to the protection of Crescent Moon Spring from burial.Opening up the passage of easterly, westerly and southerly winds through intermediately cutting the protection forest, demolishing the enclosed wall and changing the pavilion into a porous pattern have been suggested to protect the Crescent Moon Spring from burial. | ZHANG Weimin TAN Lihai AN Zhishan ZHANG Kecun GAO Yang NIU Qinghe | 2019 | Journal of Arid Land2019,11,3: | 1
Sand control effect of HDPE sandbreak nets with different porosity structure显示文摘Straw checkerboard sand barriers with a porous structure that consists of a pervious upper portion and a dense lower portion are widely used to achieve great sand control effect.Considering this, and resolving the serious earth surface undercutting problem after HDPE sandbreak net checkboard barriers setting, the authors used HDPE(high-density polyethylene)materials to prepare new sandbreak materials with a similar porous structure.Through wind tunnel simulations and field sand control monitoring,we compared the sand control effect of three HDPE sandbreak nets with different porosity structure.Compared to the sandbreak net with uniform porosity structure, the three types of HDPE sandbreak nets with different porosity structure had poorer effect on reducing sand transport rates, but had longer effective protection distance before sandbreak nets at low wind velocity conditions(<12 m/s),longer effective protection distance at high wind velocity(>14 m/s)and longer effective protection distance between sandbreak nets at all experimental wind velocity conditions.Wind and sand control effect characteristics of HDPE sandbreak nets with different porosity structure provide an ideal material on semiburied checkerboard sand barriers for sand stabilization.By contrast,uniform-type sandbreak nets are used as materials on high upright sand fences for sand blocking. These HDPE sandbreak nets can be used to replace traditional sandbreak materials and have a very high potential for widespread and popular application in aeolian sand disaster control. | QingHe Niu JianJun Qu AiGuo Zhao LiHai Tan | 2022 | Research in Cold and Arid Regions2022,14,6: | 1

A method to obtain soil-moisture estimates over bare agricultural fields in arid areas by using multi-angle RADARSAT-2 data显示文摘Soil moisture is an important parameter for agriculture, meteorological, and hydrological studies. This paper focuses on soil-moisture estimation methodology based on the multi-angle high-and low-incidence-angle mode RADARSAT-2 data obtained over bare agricultural fields in an arid area. Backscattering of the high-and low-incidence angles is simulated by using AIEM(advanced integral equation model), with the surface-roughness estimation model built based on the simulated data. Combining the surface-roughness estimation model with the backscattering model of the low-incidence-angle mode, a soil-moisture estimation method is put forward. First, the natural logarithm(ln) of soil moisture was obtained and then the soil moisture calculated. Soil moisture of the study area in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, was obtained based on this method; a good agreement was observed between the estimated and measured soil moisture. The coefficient of determination was 0.85, and the estimation precision reached 4.02% in root mean square error(RMSE). The results illustrate the high potential of the approach developed and RADARSAT-2 data to monitor soil moisture. | JunZhan Wang JianJun Qu LiHai Tan KeCun Zhang | 2018 | Research in Cold and Arid Regions2018,10,2: | 0
Fracture features of brittle coal under uniaxial and cyclic compression loads显示文摘Under the efects of complex geological and stress environments, burst hazards continue to be a major challenge for underground space utilization and deep resources exploration as its occurrence can lead to personnel causalities, equipment damage and structural collapse.Considering the stress path experienced by in-situ coal body, cyclic loading appears in quite various forms for instance shearer cutting, overlying strata breakage,hydro-fracturing and blasting, during tunnel, mining and underground space utilizing process. The stability of the underground coal body subject to periodic loading/unloading stress is extremely important for maintain the function of designed engineering structure for waste storage, safe mining, roadway development, gas recovery, carbon sequestration and so on.The mechanical properties of hard rock subject to cyclic fatigue loads has been intensively investigated by many researchers as the rock burst induced by supercritical loads has long been a safety risk and engineering problems for civil and tunneling engineering under deep overburden.More recently, the mechanical properties of coal samples under cyclic fatigue loads is investigated from the aspect of hysteresis, energy dissipation and irreversible damage as the burst hazards of brittle coal is rising in many countries. However, the crack propagation and fracture pattern of brittle coal need more research to understand the micro mechanism of burst incubation subject to cyclic fatigue loads as brittle coal can store more elastic strain energy and rapidly release the energy when its ultimate strength once reached. This research studied the internal crack status corresponding to diferent cyclic fatigue loading stage of brittle coal samples. The AE monitoring was applied during the uniaxial and cyclic loading process of brittle coal samples to record the crack intensity of samples at diferent loading stages. The damage evolution curve corresponding to loading status was then determined. The fracture pattern of coal samples determined by micro-CT scan was observed and discussed. It has been found by this paper that brittle coal of uniaxial compression tests demonstrated sudden failure caused by major splitting fracture while that of cyclic fatigue tests experienced progressive failure with mixture fracture network. | Shikang Song Ting Ren Linming Dou Jian Sun Xiaohan Yang Lihai Tan | 2023 | International Journal of Coal Science & Technology2023,10,1: | 0
Mechanisms of the formation of wind-blown sand hazards and the sand control measures in Gobi areas under extremely strong winds along the Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed railway显示文摘The Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed railway(HSR)traverses areas of the Gobi Desert where extremely strong winds are frequent. These strong winds cause sand/gravel hazards,an unaddressed issue that often seriously compromises the safe operation of the HSR.This paper studies the mechanisms leading to wind-blown sand hazards and the outcomes of sand control projects in these areas. The main findings are as follows:(1)Cold northern airflows over the Tian Shan mountain range are accelerated by the wind tunnels and downslope effect as they pass over complex terrain comprising passes, gullies, and proluvial fans.Consequently, the wind intensity often increases two-to threefold, creating frequent high-speed winds that lead to severe sand damage along the HSR.(2)In the Gobi areas with extremely strong winds, sand grains can be lifted as high as 9 m from the ground into the air,far higher than in other areas of the desert. The sand transport rate decreases exponentially with increasing height. Both wind speed and particle size determine saltation height.Coarser particles and stronger winds provide the particles with a higher kinetic energy as they collide with the ground. In the wind zones of Baili and Yandun, the analysed study areas, the saltation layer height of wind-blown sand/gravel exceeds 3 and 2 m,respectively.(3)Based on the above findings, recently emerging sand control materials, suitable for the areas of interest, were screened and developed.Furthermore, under the proposed principle of‘supplementing blocking with trapping’,a comprehensive sand control measure was established, featuring sandblocking belts comprised of multiple rows, and high, vertical sand-trapping installations with a large grids size. The installed system showed a high efficacy, reducing sand transport rate by 87.87%and significantly decreasing the deposition of sand along a trial section of the HSR. | Jianjun QU Tao WANG Qinghe NIU Benli LIU Lihai TAN Qingjie HAN Yang GAO Jianhua XIAO | 2023 | Science China Earth Sciences2023,66,2: | 0
Aeolian sediment transport over sandy gobi:Field studies in the Nanhu gobi along the Hami-Lop Nor Railway显示文摘Wind-blown sand over sandy gobi with an abundant sediment supply can cause severe sand hazards. However, compared with the study of aeolian transport over gravel gobi with a limited sediment supply, less attention has been devoted to sandy gobi, and thus, our understanding of wind-blown sand movement on sandy gobi is still poor. Here,we report the results of observations of three transport events on a sandy gobi along the Hami-Lop Nor Railway based on high-frequency saltation particle count and horizontal sediment flux measurements coupled with instantaneous wind velocity measurements. The results reveal that, unlike the notably intermittent aeolian saltation over gravel gobi, continuous transport occurred on the sandy gobi. The mean saltation layer height was 0.23±0.07 m,and it was positively related to both the grain size of surface particles and the wind velocity regardless of the gobi type. The sediment transport rates could be expressed as the power function Q=ap/g[u^(*)(u^(*2)-u^(*)t^(2))]b,and the scaling parameter(b)reached to 2.5,which is much larger than that of other gobi areas(b=1).Our findings suggest that the wind-blown sand over sandy gobi is much more severe than that over gravel gobi, and the Nanhu sandy gobi is the major sand source for sand hazards of the Hami-Lop Nor Railway.Sand-fixation measures such as checkerboard sand barriers with enhanced checkerboard size and barrier height should be the main subject of sand control systems for the Hami-Lop Nor Railway in sandy gobi. | Tao Wang Jianjun Qu Lihai Tan | 2023 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2023,11,1: | 0
Aeolian processes on sandy desertification of an alpine meadow: A wind tunnel experiment显示文摘In recent years, the desertification of alpine meadows has become a serious ecological problem and has gradually become a threat to regional economic activities in Maqu County. To reveal the mechanism for sandy desertification of alpine meadows,we conducted wind tunnel experiments on aeolian processes over sandy alpine meadows. Results show that the sandflux profile of mix-sized sediment decays exponentially with increasing height. However, the profile pattern of a group of uniform-sized particles depends on the experimental wind speeds. The profile pattern of all the groups studied can be expressed by exponential decay functions when the wind speed is less than or equal to 16 m/s.while that for all the groups studied can be expressed by a Gaussian distribution function when the wind speed is above 16 m/s.The average saltation heights of mixed sands at wind speeds of 12 m/s,16 m/s,20 m/s,and 24 m/s were 2.74,4.19,5.28,and 6.12 cm,respectively. The mean grain size basically first decreases and then increases with increasing height under different wind speeds. The sorting improves with increasing wind speed, while the kurtosis and skewness show relationships with only the characteristics of the parent soil. | ZhiShan An KeCun Zhang LiHai Tan BaiCheng Niu YanPing Yu | 2020 | Research in Cold and Arid Regions2020,12,1: | 0
Progress on research and mitigation of wind-blown sand risk in Dunhuang Singing Sand Mountain and Crescent Spring Scenic area,China显示文摘The Singing Sand Mountain and Crescent Spring Scenic Spot in Dunhuang,Northwest China is a world-renowned desert attraction that is also an integral component of the Dunhuang UNESCO Global Geopark. This scenic area underwent a 30-year transformation,i.e.,from a severe sand risk with spring water threatened by sand burial due to dune deformation,to restoration of the original sand flow field and mitigation of the sand burial problem. The current paper summarizes the research on the intensive monitoring of the dynamic change of star dunes near the spring, observation of wind and sand flow movement, and then restoring the harmonic vibration of the sand particles(singing sand)that were previously silenced. The existing and prospective impacts of anthropogenic and natural forces on the deformation of the sand dunes are investigated by integrated methods, guiding the implementation of mitigating measures with significant ameliorative effects.Contrast to common sand control practices that aim to reduce wind speed and stop blown sands, our research highlights the importance of maintaining the natural wind flow field in stabilizing surrounding dunes. These mitigation measures consist of removing excessive vegetation and newly constructed buildings to recover the original wind flow field and sand transport activity.Such research and mitigation efforts ensure the scientific protection and restoration of the special desert landform, and contribute to the mutual enhancement of the conservation and exploitation of this desert scenic spot and similar sites. | BenLi Liu KeCun Zhang JianJun Qu HaiJiang Li QingHe Niu ZhiShan An YingJun Pang LiHai Tan GenSheng Yang | 2023 | Research in Cold and Arid Regions2023,15,3: | 0
Developing coal burst propensity index method for Australian coal mines显示文摘Coal burst is the violent failure of overstressed coal, and it is often accompanied by sound, coal ejection and seismic events. It is subsequently recognized as a serious safety risk of Australia after double fatalities coal burst happened at Austar Coal Mine. Considering the increasing trend of coal burst severity and frequency with mining depth, it is an urgent task to develop the coal burst risk assessment methods for Australia underground coal mines. Coal burst propensity index method is a widely used method of burst risk evaluation of coal as it is summed up from the coal burst research and practice of many countries. This paper presents the experimental and theoretical research of coal burst propensity index method for coal burst risk assessment in Australia. The definition of four indexes including elastic strain energy index(W_(ET)), bursting energy index(K_E), dynamic failure time(DT) and uniaxial compression strength(RC)is introduced in the first part. Then, the standard laboratory test process and test parameter of coal burst propensity index is presented. DT test is conducted with 0.3 mm/min displacement control loading rate while other test is with 0.5 mm/min. Besides, modified data processing and risk classification method of test are proposed. Differentiate analysis of stress-strain curve is adopted in the data processing of DT and KEindex. A four level risk classification form of burst risk is recommended for Australian underground coal mines. Finally, two likely improvement methods of W_(ET) test, including volumetric strain indicator method and theoretical calculation method, are discussed. | Xiaohan Yang Ting Ren Lihai Tan Alex Remennikov Xueqiu He | 2018 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2018,28,5: | 0
