| 1 | Conceptualizing and Measuring Economic Resilience of Resource-based Cities: Case Study of Northeast China显示文摘This paper develops a conceptual model and an indicator system for measuring economic resilience of resource-based cities based on the theory of evolutionary resilience and the related concepts of persistence, adaptation, and transformation. Nineteen resource-based cities in Northeast China were analyzed using the indicator system. The results showed that Liaoning and Jilin provinces had higher economic resilience than Heilongjiang Province. Panjin, Benxi, and Anshan in Liaoning Province were the top three cities, while Shuangyashan and other coal-based cities in Heilongjiang Province ranked last. Metals-and petroleum-based cities had significantly higher resilience than coal-based cities. The differences in persistence, adaptability, transformation, and resilience among resource-based cities decreased since the introduction of the Northeast Revitalization Strategy in 2003. Forestry-based cities improved the most in terms of resilience, followed by metals-based and multiple-resource cities; however, resilience dropped for coal-based cities, and petroleum-based cities falling the most. | 2 | Drug resistance and new therapies in colorectal cancer显示文摘Colorectal cancer(CRC) is often diagnosed at an advanced stage when tumor cell dissemination has taken place. Chemo-and targeted therapies provide only a limited increase of overall survival for these patients. The major reason for clinical outcome finds its origin in therapy resistance. Escape mechanisms to both chemo-and targeted therapy remain the main culprits. Here, we evaluate major resistant mechanisms and elaborate on potential new therapies. Amongst promising therapies is α-amanitin antibodydrug conjugate targeting hemizygous p53 loss. It becomes clear that a dynamic interaction with the tumor microenvironment exists and that this dictates therapeutic outcome. In addition, CRC displays a limited response to checkpoint inhibitors, as only a minority of patients with microsatellite instable high tumors is susceptible. | 4 | Analyzing Industrial Structure Evolution of Old Industrial Cities Using Evolutionary Resilience Theory:A Case Study in Shenyang of China显示文摘The recession and revitalization of old industrial cities concerns urban industrial evolution and its characteristics. Based on the theory of evolutionary resilience, we developed an analytical framework for the industrial structure evolution of old industrial cities, and applied the framework to a case study in Shenyang. The following conclusions are drawn. First, since 1978, Shenyang's industrial growth capacity has shown fluctuation between ‘contraction-expansion'. As the secondary industry has a much stronger expansionary and contractionary capacity for growth, this results in lacking stability leading to industrial structure transformation. Second, since 1999, the orientation towards a high-end manufacturing industry in Shenyang has weakened, and the evolution of the new and old growth path is characterized by low-end orientation. Third, since 2007, Shenyang's industrial innovation output capacity has dropped sharply which has been significantly affected by scientific and technological personnel and enterprise-owed science and technology institutions and to a less extent by R&D expenditure. We applied the resilience theory to study the industrial evolution of an old industrial city, explored new study perspectives on industrial evolution and verified the applicability of the resilience theory. | 5 | Calcium signaling and T-type calcium channels in cancer cell cycling显示文摘Regulation of intracellular calcium is an important signaling mechanism for cell proliferation in both normal and cancerous cells. In normal epithelial cells, free calcium concentration is essential for cells to enter and accomplish the S phase and the M phase of the cell cycle. In contrast, cancerous cells can pass these phases of the cell cycle with much lower cytoplasmic free calcium concentrations, indicating an alternative mechanism has developed for fulfilling the intracellular calcium requirement for an increased rate of DNA synthesis and mitosis of fast replicating cancerous cells. The detailed mechanism underlying the altered calcium loading pathway remains unclear; however, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests the T-type Ca2+ channel is abnormally expressed in cancerous cells and that blockade of these channels may reduce cell proliferation in addition to inducing apoptosis. Recent studies also show that the expression of T-type Ca2+ channels in breast cancer cells is proliferation state dependent, i.e. the channels are expressed at higher levels during the fast-replication period, and once the cells are in a non-proliferation state, expression of this channel isminimal. Therefore, selectively blocking calcium entry into cancerous cells may be a valuable approach for preventing tumor growth. | 9 | Digital synthesis of histological stains using micro-structured and multiplexed virtual staining of label-free tissue显示文摘Histological staining is a vital step in diagnosing various diseases and has been used for more than a century to provide contrast in tissue sections,rendering the tissue constituents visible for microscopic analysis by medical experts.However,this process is time consuming,labour intensive,expensive and destructive to the specimen.Recently,the ability to virtually stain unlabelled tissue sections,entirely avoiding the histochemical staining step,has been demonstrated using tissue-stain-specific deep neural networks.Here,we present a new deep-learning-based framework that generates virtually stained images using label-free tissue images,in which different stains are merged following a micro-structure map defined by the user.This approach uses a single deep neural network that receives two different sources of information as its input:(1)autofluorescence images of the label-free tissue sample and(2)a“digital staining matrix”,which represents the desired microscopic map of the different stains to be virtually generated in the same tissue section.This digital staining matrix is also used to virtually blend existing stains,digitally synthesizing new histological stains.We trained and blindly tested this virtual-staining network using unlabelled kidney tissue sections to generate micro-structured combinations of haematoxylin and eosin(H&E),Jones’silver stain,and Masson’s trichrome stain.Using a single network,this approach multiplexes the virtual staining of label-free tissue images with multiple types of stains and paves the way for synthesizing new digital histological stains that can be created in the same tissue cross section,which is currently not feasible with standard histochemical staining methods. | Yijie Zhang Kevin de Haan Yair Rivenson Jingxi Li Apostolos Delis Aydogan Ozcan | 2020 | Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1: | 7 |
| 10 | Distributional responses to climate change for alpine species of Cyananthus and Primula endemic to the Himalaya-Hengduan Mountains显示文摘Global warming increases the vulnerability of plants, especially alpine herbaceous species, to local extinction. In this study, we collected species distribution information from herbarium specimens for ten selected Cyananthus and Primula alpine species endemic to the Himalaya-Hengduan Mountains(HHM).Combined with climate data from WorldClim, we used Maximum Entropy Modeling(MaxEnt) to project distributional changes from the current time period to 2070. Our predictions indicate that, under a wide range of climate change scenarios, the distributions of all species will shift upward in elevation and northward in latitude; furthermore, under these scenarios, species will expand the size of their range. For the majority of the species in this study, habitats are available to mitigate upward and northward shifts that are projected to be induced by changing climate. If current climate projections, however, increase in magnitude or continue to increase past our projection dates, suitable habitat for future occupation by alpine species will be limited as we predict range contraction or less range expansion for some of the species under more intensified climate scenarios. Our study not only underscores the value of herbarium source information for future climate model projections but also suggests that future studies on the effects of climate change on alpine species should include additional biotic and abiotic factors to provide greater resolution of the local dynamics associated with species persistence under a warming climate. | Xie He Kevin S. | 15 | Inferring the Tree of Life of the order Cypriniformes, the earth's most diverse clade of freshwater fishes: Implications of varied taxon and character sampling显示文摘The phylogenetic relationships of species are fundamental to any biological investigation, including all evolutionary studies. Accurate inferences of sister group relationships provide the researcher with an historical framework within which the attributes or geographic origin of species (or supraspecific groups) evolved. Taken out of this phylogenetic context, interpretations of evolutionary processes or origins, geographic distributions, or speciation rates and mechanisms, are subject to nothing less than a biological experiment without controls. Cypriniformes is the most diverse clade of freshwater fishes with estimates of diversity of nearly 3,500 species. These fishes display an amazing array of morphological, ecological, behavioral, and geographic diversity and offer a tremendous opportunity to enhance our understanding of the biotic and abiotic factors associated with diversification and adaptation to environments. Given the nearly global distribution of these fishes, they serve as an important model group for a plethora of biological investigations, including indicator species for future cli-matic changes. The occurrence of the zebrafish, Danio rerio, in this order makes this clade a critical component in understanding and predicting the relationship between mutagenesis and phenotypic expressions in vertebrates, including humans. With the tremendous diversity in Cypriniformes, our understanding of their phylogenetic relationships has not proceeded at an acceptable rate, despite a plethora of morphological and more recent mo-lecular studies. Most studies are pre-Hennigian in origin or include relatively small numbers of taxa. Given that analyses of small numbers of taxa for molecular characters can be compromised by peculiarities of long-branch attraction and nodal-density effect, it is critical that significant progress in our understanding of the relationships of these important fishes occurs with increasing sampling of species to mitigate these potential problems. The recent Cypriniformes Tree of Life initiative is an effort to achieve this goal with morphological and molecular (mitochondrial and nuclear) data. In this early synthesis of our understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of these fishes, all types of data have contributed historically to improving our understanding, but not all analyses are complementary in taxon sampling, thus precluding direct understanding of the impact of taxon sampling on achieving accurate phylogenetic inferences. However, recent molecular studies do provide some insight and in some instances taxon sampling can be implicated as a variable that can influence sister group relationships. Other instances may also exist but without inclusion of more taxa for both mitochondrial and nuclear genes, one cannot distinguish between inferences being dictated by taxon sampling or the origins of the molecular data. | Richard L. | 16 | Automated defect analysis in electron microscopic images显示文摘Electron microscopy and defect analysis are a cornerstone of materials science,as they offer detailed insights on the microstructure and performance of a wide range of materials and material systems.Building a robust and flexible platform for automated defect recognition and classification in electron microscopy will result in the completion of analysis orders of magnitude faster after images are recorded,or even online during image acquisition.Automated analysis has the potential to be significantly more efficient,accurate,and repeatable than human analysis,and it can scale with the increasingly important methods of automated data generation.Herein,an automated recognition tool is developed based on a computer vison–based approach;it sequentially applies a cascade object detector,convolutional neural network,and local image analysis methods.We demonstrate that the automated tool performs as well as or better than manual human detection in terms of recall and precision and achieves quantitative image/defect analysis metrics close to the human average.The proposed approach works for images of varying contrast,brightness,and magnification.These promising results suggest that this and similar approaches are worth exploring for detecting multiple defect types and have the potential to locate,classify,and measure quantitative features for a range of defect types,materials,and electron microscopic techniques. | Wei Li Kevin G.Field Dane Morgan | 2018 | npj Computational Materials2018,,1: | 5 |

An increasing number of studies has demonstrated that the gutliveraxis plays a critical role in liver homeostasis. Dysbiosis of gut microbiota cancause liver diseases, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic liverdisease. Preclinical and clinical investigations have substantiated that themetabolites and other molecules derived from gut microbiota and diet interactionfunction as mediators to cause liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and final cancer. This effecthas been demonstrated to be associated with dysregulation of intrahepaticimmunity and liver metabolism. Targeting these findings have led to thedevelopment of novel preventive and therapeutic strategies. | 18 | Impact of time to surgery from injury on postoperative infection and deep vein thrombosis in periprosthetic knee fractures显示文摘Purpose:Periprosthetic fracture (PPF) is a serious complication that occurs in 0.3%-2.5% of all total knee arthroplasties used to treat end-stage arthritis. To our knowledge, there are no studies in the literature that evaluate the association between time to surgery after PPF and early postoperative infections or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This study tests our hypothesis that delayed time to surgery increases rates of postoperative infection and DVT after PPF surgery.Methods:Our study cohort included patients undergoing PPF surgery in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database (2006-2015). The patients were dichotomized based on time to surgery: group 1 with time ≤2 days and group 2 with time >2 days. A 2-by-2 contingency table and Fisher's exact test were used to evaluate the association between complications and time to surgery groups, and multivariate logistic regression was used to adjust for demographics and known risk factors.Results:A total of 263 patients (80% females) with a mean age of 73.9 ± 12.0 years were identified receiving PPF surgery, among which 216 patients were in group 1 and 47 patients in group 2. Complications in group 1 included 3 (1.4%) superficial infections (SI), 1 (0.5%) organ space infection (OSI), 1 (0.5%) wound dehiscence (WD), and 4 (1.9%) deep vein thrombosis (DVT);while complications in group 2 included 1 (2.1%) SI, 1 (2.1%) OSI, 1 (2.1%) DVT, and no WD. No significant difference was detected in postoperative complications between the two groups. | 20 | Phyllosticta species associated with citrus diseases in China显示文摘Phyllosticta species associated with diseases of four commercial Citrus species grown in China are reported.Totally,496 Phyllosticta strains were isolated from mandarins(Citrus reticulata),pomeloes(C.maxima),oranges(C.sinensis)and lemons(C.limon)in the main citrus producing regions across China,and 74 strains were selected for phylogenetic analysis.Analyses inferred from the sequences of internal transcribed spacer region(ITS1,5.8S nrDNA and ITS2),partial translation elongation factor 1-alpha(TEF1)and partial actin gene(ACT),showed these representative Phyllosticta isolates clustered in four distinct clades corresponding to three known,and one undescribed species.The newly resolved taxon,Phyllosticta citrichinaensis was isolated from leaves and fruits of all four Citrus species and is introduced in this paper.This taxon caused minor damage,showing irregular spots or freckles.Phyllosticta citriasiana,associated with tan spot of pomeloes,was isolated only from pomeloes,and never from lemons,mandarins and oranges.Phyllosticta citricarpa,the citrus black spot pathogen,which is presently subjected to phytosanitary legislation in the EU and United States,was isolated from lemons,mandarins and oranges,but never from pomeloes.The isolates of P.citricarpa clustered in two subclades,one from mandarins,the other from oranges and lemons.P.capitalensis was isolated from all four Citrus species as an endophyte,causing false melanose,or together with P.citricarpa or P.citriasiana.Morphological,cultural and biochemical characters were consistent with the results of phylogenetic analysis.In addition,a specific primer pair Pca8/ITS4 was designed and selected,and its corresponding PCR procedure was developed for the detection of P.citriasiana in this study. | Xinghong Wang Guoqing Chen Feng Huang Jingze Zhang Kevin D.Hyde Hongye Li | 2012 | Fungal Diversity2012,,1: | 5 |
