| 1 | XS0601 REDUCES THE INCIDENCE OF RESTENOSIS: A PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF 335 PATIENTS UNDERGOING PERCUTANEOUS CORONARY INTERVENTION IN CHINA显示文摘Background XS0601, consisting of active ingredients (Chuangxiongol and paeoniflorin), has been shown to inhibit arterial neointimal hyperplasia in animal models and in preliminary human studies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of XS0601 in preventing restenosis following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods A multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted. A total of 335 patients were randomized into treatment with the oral administration of XS0601, or a placebo for 6 months after successful PCI. Angiographic follow-up was scheduled at 6 months, and clinical follow-ups performed at 1, 3 and 6 months after PCI. The primary end point was angiographic restenosis. The secondary end points were the combined incidence of death, target lesion nonfatal myocardial infarction, repeat angioplasty, and coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Results A total of 308 patients (91.9%) completed the study and 145 cases (47.1%) received angiographic follow-up. The restenosis rates were significantly reduced in the XS0601 group as compared with the placebo group (26.0% vs. 47.2%, P < 0.05), and the minimum lumen diameter (MLD) was greater [(2.08 ± 0.89) mm for XS0601 vs. (1.73 ± 0.94) mm for placebo, P < 0.05]. XS0601 also significantly reduced the combined incidence of major adverse cardiac event (10.4% in the XS0601 group vs. 22.7% in the placebo group, P < 0.05). The incidence of recurrent angina at 3 and 6 months after PCI was also significantly reduced in XS0601 group (7.1% and 11.0%) as compared with those in placebo group (19.5% and 42.9%) (P < 0.05). No significant side effects occurred within the 6-month follow-up period in the XS0601 group. | 2 | Alterations of intestinal immune function and regulatory effects of L-arginine in experimental severe acute pancreatitis rats显示文摘AIM: To discuss the changes of intestinal mucosal immune function in rats with experimental severe acute pancreatitis(SAP) and the regulatory effect of L-arginine.METHODS: Male adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into pancreatitis group, sham-operation group, and L-arginine treatment group. Animals were killed at 24, 48, and 72 h after SAP models were developed and specimens were harvested. Endotoxin concentration in portal vein was determined by limulus endotoxin analysis kit. CD3+, CD4+,CD8+ T lymphocytes in intestinal mucosal lamina propria were examined by immunohistochemistry. Secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) in cecum feces was examined by radioimmunoassay.RESULTS: Compared to the control group, plasma endotoxin concentration in the portal vein increased, percentage of CD3+ and CD4+ T lymphocyte subsets in the end of intestinal mucosal lamina propria reduced significantly,CD4+/CD8+ ratio decreased, and SIgA concentrations in cecum feces reduced at 24, 48, and 72 h after SAP developed. Compared to SAP group, the L-arginine treatment group had a lower level of plasma endotoxin concentration in the portal vein, a higher CD3+ and CD4+ T lymphocyte percentage in the end of intestinal mucosal lamina propria,an increased ratio of CD4+/CD8+ and a higher SIgA concentration in cecum feces.CONCLUSION: Intestinal immune suppression occurs in the early stage of SAP rats, which may be the main reason for bacterial and endotoxin translocation. | 3 | The early Holocene optimum inferred from a high-resolution pollen record of Huguangyan Maar Lake in southern China显示文摘A high-resolution pollen record of the past 13000 a from Huguangyan Maar Lake reveals the vegetation and environment changes in southern China during the Holocene. It shows that (i) pollen percentage of trees and shrubs reached 56% during the early Holocene (11600―7800 cal a BP), of which the pollen percentage of tropical trees reached a maximum at 9500―8000 cal a BP, reflecting a hot and wet envi- ronment; (ii) during the mid-Holocene (7800―4200 cal a BP), the pollen percentage of montane conif- erous trees and herbs increased, while the percentage of tropical-subtropical trees decreased, indi- cating lower temperature and humidity; (iii) in the late Holocene spanning from 4200 to 350 cal a BP, the pollen percentage of herbs and montane conifer increased significantly, indicating a marked decrease of temperature and humidity. Our pollen data reveal that the time period 9500―8000 cal a BP in south- ern China represents a climatic optimum for the Holocene characterized by hot and wet conditions. This is consistent with the Holocene optimum found in lower latitude regions globally. We speculate that strong insolation might cause the northward migration of the ITCZ and subtropical summer mon- soon front, which resulted in an early Holocene optimum in the Huguangyan area. | 4 | EFFECT OF ASPIRIN PLUS CLOPIDOGREL ON INFLAMMATORY MARKERS IN PATIENTS WITH NON-ST-SEGMENT ELEVATION ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME显示文摘Background Aspirin can inhibit inflammatory reactions and platelet aggregation, but little is known about the effects of the combination of aspirin plus clopidogrel, a new antiplatelet agent, on inflammation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether aspirin plus clopidogrel can further suppress inflammation in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTEACS). Methods One hundred and fifteen patients with NSTEACS were randomized into two groups: group A (aspirin alone, n=58) and group B (aspirin plus clopidogrel, n=57). Patients in group A received a loading dose of 300 mg aspirin, then 100 mg per day. The patients in group B received a loading dose of 300 mg aspirin and 300 mg clopidogrel, then 100 mg aspirin and 75 mg clopidogrel per day. Serum high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) were measured in all patients at baseline prior to any drug treatment after admission, and at 7 and 30 days after beginning drug treatment. Thirty healthy volunteers on no medications were enrolled as controls (group C). Results Baseline levels of hs-CRP and TNF-αin group A and group B were significantly higher than those in group C. Seven days after administration, the levels of hs-CRP in both group A and group B decreased significantly [Group A: (6.15 ± 1.39) mg/L vs (9.18 ± 1.62) mg/L, P <0.01; Group B:(4.99 ± 1.62) mg/L vs (10.29 ± 1.47) mg/L, P<0.01]. Similarly, levels of TNF-αin both groups decreased at 7 days compared to baseline [Group A: (90.99 ± 28.91) pg/ml vs (117.20 ± 37.13) pg/ml, P <0.01; Group B: (74.32± 21.83) pg/ml vs (115.27 ± 32.11) pg/ml, P <0.01]. Thirty days after administration, the levels of hs-CRP in both group A and group B decreased further to (3.49 ± 1.53) mg/L, and (2.40 ± 1.17) mg/L respectively (P <0.01 for both comparisons). Levels of TNF-αin groups A and B also decreased significantly between 7 and 30 days, to 63.28 ± 29.01 pg/ml (group A) and (43.95 ± 17.10) pg/ml (group B; P <0.01 for both comparisons). Significantly lower levels of hs-CRP and TNF-αwere observed in group B compared to Group A at thirty days after initiating drug treatment (P <0.05). Conclusions Aspirin plus clopidogrel treatment reduced levels of serum hs-CRP and TNF-α in patients with NSTEACS significantly more than aspirin alone. | 7 | Clay mineral composition and their sources for the fluvial sediments of Taiwan Residents rivers显示文摘Located at the collision boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Continental Plate,the island of Taiwan is generally recognized as an important example in the MARGINS Program Science Plan and 'source-to-sink' research because of its high tectonic activity,heavy rainfall and unique geography.Large suspended sediment loads are transported to the adjacent ocean by Taiwan Residents rivers every year,making Taiwan an important source of sediments into the adjacent seas and a natural laboratory for studying the systemic movement of fluvial sediments from source to sink.A detailed study on the clay mineral composition of surface sediments collected from the drainage basins of 12 Taiwan Residents rivers using X-ray diffraction methods was conducted.Our results indicated that the clay mineral assemblages consisted dominantly of illite(approximately 73%) and chlorite(approximately 24%),with lesser abundances of kaolinite(approximately 3%) and even lower levels of smectite from the Danshuei River sediments in northwestern Taiwan.The Jhuoshuei River sediments from western Taiwan contained clay mineral assemblages that consisted of illite(approximately 75%) and chlorite(approximately 25%),but they lacked kaolinite and smectite.In southwestern Taiwan,the clay mineral assemblages were dominated by illite(approximately 75%) and chlorite(approximately 23%),but had a low abundance of kaolinite(generally < 2%) and no smectite.The clay mineral assemblages in eastern Taiwan are obviously different from those in western parts of the island.The most noticeable difference is that the average abundance of chlorite in the Hualien River from eastern Taiwan was the highest(approximately 48%) of all the Taiwan Residents rivers.We concluded that,in general,the clay mineral assemblages in Taiwan Residents rivers were mainly composed of illite and chlorite with kaolinite and smectite being scarce,and these trends are different from those in China's mainland rivers.The clay mineral composition shown in this study was primarily determined by the properties of the bedrock,and the differential weathering intensities of the drainage area.The surface sediments in Taiwan's rivers showed a greater abundance of illite and chlorite because the outcropped rocks were mainly composed of Tertiary sedimentary rocks,especially sandstone,shale and slate,and show strong physical weathering.The relatively high relief and more abundant rainfall also caused the clay minerals in the fluvial sediments to be transported to the estuaries down rivers from the mountains and then delivered to the adjacent seas by currents and waves over a shorter time scale. | LI ChuanShun SHI XueFa KAO ShuhJi CHEN MinTe LIU YanGuang FANG XiSheng LUE HuaHua ZOU JianJun LIU ShengFa QIAO ShuQing | 2012 | Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,6: | 23 |

| 9 | Comparative QTL Mapping of Resistance to Gray Leaf Spot in Maize Based on Bioinformatics显示文摘The integration QTL map for gray leaf spot resistance in maize was constructed by compiling a total of 57 QTLs available with genetic map IBM2 2005 neighbors as reference. Twenty-six 'real QTLs' and seven consensus QTLs were identified by refining these 57 QTLs using overview and meta-analysis approaches. Seven consensus QTLs were found on chromosomes 1.06, 2.06, 3.04, 4.06, 4.08, 5.03, and 8.06, and the map coordinates were 552.53, 425.72, 279.20, 368.97, 583.21, 308.68 and 446.14 cM, respectively. Using a synteny conservation approach based on comparative mapping between the maize genetic map and rice physical map, a total of 69 rice and maize resistance genes collected from websites Gramene and MaizeGDB were projected onto the maize genetic map IBM2 2005 neighbors, and 2 (Rgene32, ht1), 4 (Rgene5, rp3, scmv2, wsm2), and 4 (ht2, Rgene6, Rgene8 and Rgene7) positional candidate genes were found in three consensus QTLs on chromosomes 2.06, 3.04, and 8.06, respectively. | 12 | Response of global lightning activity to air temperature variation显示文摘It is an issue of great attention but yet not very clear whether lightning activities increase or decrease on a warmer world. Reeve et al. presented that lightning activities in global land and the Northern Hemisphere land have posi- tive response to the increase of wet bulb temperature at 1000hPa. Is this positive response restricted only to wet bulb temperature or in land? What is the response of global light- ning activities (in both land and ocean) to the global surface air temperature variation like? This paper, based on the 5-year or 8-year OTD/LIS satellite-based lightning detecting data and the NCEP reanalysis data, makes a reanalysis of the response of the global and regional lightning activities to temperature variations. The results show that on the inter- annual time scale the global total flash rate has positive re- sponse to the variation in global surface air temperature, with the sensitivity of 17±7% K?1. Also, the seasonal mean flash rate of continents all over the world and that of conti- nents in the Northern Hemisphere have sensitive positive response to increase of global surface air temperature and wet bulb temperature, with the sensitivity of about 13±5% K?1, a bit lower than estimation of 40% K?1 in Reeve et al. | 14 | The microphysics of ice accretion on wires:Observations and simulations显示文摘The weather system, meteorological conditions, and microphysics of cloud, fog, and rain droplets are studied during the formation, growth, maintenance, and shedding periods of ice accretion on wires in Enshi, Hubei Province in China using 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 winter observations. The comprehensive observations include data of visibility, microphysics of fog and rain droplets, and ice thickness, as well as data from an automated weather station and other routinely recorded meteorological data. The results show that icing occurred during the passage of a cold front, with a high-pressure system and a cold temperature trough at 850 hPa, and a southeasterly at 500 hPa that provided abundant moisture. Ice formation usually started in the evening or early morning, and ice shed around noon the following day when the temperature was-1°C to 0°C. The averaged liquid water content of the fog droplet was distinctly greater during the growth period than during the other three periods, and there was precipitation during the growth period in each case of ice accretion. The growth rate of the ice thickness was clearly correlated with the liquid water content, with a correlation coefficient of 0.62. | 19 | Density functional theory study on the insertion reaction mechanism of dibromocarbene with formaldehyde显示文摘The insertion reaction mechanism of CBr2 with CH3CH2O has been studied by using the B3LYP/6-311G(d) and CCSD(T)/6-311G(d) at single point. The geometries of reactions,transition state and products were completely optimized. All the transition state is verified by the vibrational analysis and the internal re-action coordinate (IRC) calculations. The results show that reaction (1) is the dominant reaction path,which proceeds via two steps: i) two reactants form an intermediate (IM1),which is an exothermal re-action of 8.62 kJ·mol?1 without energy barrier; ii) P1 is obtained via the TS1 and the H-shift,in which the energy barrier is 44.53 kJ·mol?1. The statistical thermodynamics and Eyring transition state theory with Wigner correction are used to study the thermodynamic and kinetic characters of this reaction in temperature range from 100 to 2200 K. | 20 | Effect of moxa smoke produced during combustion of Aiye(Folium Artemisiae Argyi) on behavioral changes in mice inhaling the smoke显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects that inhalation of the combustion products of the traditional Chinese herb Aiye(Folium Artemisiae Argyi) has on the central nervous system.METHODS: Forty Kunming mice(half male) were randomly assigned(n = 10/group) to a control group(C) or one of three moxa smoke concentration groups(% opacity): low(L1; 0.4%), medium(M1; 2%), and high(H1; 15%). Mice in the latter three groups were exposed to moxa smoke in a dynamic gas exposure cabinet for 20 min per day for7 days. Mice in control group were placed in the same cabinet without any intervention. For the sleep experiments, another 50 mice were divided into five groups of 10 mice each: a saline-injected control group, L1 + pentobarbital sodium(PS)-injected group, M1+PS group, H1(15%)+PS group,and a positive control group(10 mg/kg, chlorpromazine, p.o.). The weight, general activities, locomotor activities, rotarod performance, sleep duration,and sleeping rate induced by a subthreshold dose of pentobarbital sodium were recorded in the mice,and the composition of moxa smoke was analyzed using headspace gas chromatography(GC-HS).RESULTS: A low concentration of smoke significantly decreased the frequency of locomotor activities and the time for which the mice remaining on the rotarod; however, a high smoke concentration significantly prolonged the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time and sleeping rate.CONCLUSION: The concentration-dependent relaxing effects of moxa smoke on the Central Nervous System(CNS) were confirmed. Moreover, GC-HS analysis showed that the component present in the highest concentration in moxa smoke was eucalyp-tol, an essential oil well recognized for its soothing effects on the CNS.
