| 1 | Response of Stream Pollution Characteristics to Catchment Land Cover in Cao-E River Basin, China显示文摘This study addressed the relationship of river water pollution characteristics to land covers and human activities in the catchments in a complete river system named Cao-E River in eastern China.Based on the hydrogeochemical data collected monthly over a period of 3 years,cluster analysis(CA) and principal component analysis(PCA) were adopted to categorize the river reaches and reveal their pollution characteristics.According to the differences of water quality in the river reaches and land use patterns and average population densities in their catchments,the whole river system could be categorized into three groups of river reaches,i.e.,non-point sources pollution reaches(NPSPR),urban reaches(UR) and mixed sources pollution reaches(MSPR).In UR and MSPR,the water quality was mainly impacted by nutrient and organic pollution,while in NPSPR nutrient pollution was the main cause.The nitrate was the main nitrogen form in NPSPR and particulate phosphorus was the main phosphorus form in MSPR.There were no apparent trends for the variations of pollutant concentrations with increasing river flows in NPSPR and MSPR,while in UR the pollutant concentrations decreased with increasing river flows.Thus dry season was the critical period for water pollution control in UR.Therefore,catchment land covers and human activities had significant impact on river reach water pollution type,nutrient forms and water quality responses to hydrological conditions,which might be crucial for developing strategies to combat water pollution in watershed scale. | SHEN Ye-Na LUE Jun CHEN Ding-Jiang SHI Yi-Ming | 2011 | Pedosphere2011,21,1: | 13 |
| 2 | The microphysics of ice accretion on wires:Observations and simulations显示文摘The weather system, meteorological conditions, and microphysics of cloud, fog, and rain droplets are studied during the formation, growth, maintenance, and shedding periods of ice accretion on wires in Enshi, Hubei Province in China using 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 winter observations. The comprehensive observations include data of visibility, microphysics of fog and rain droplets, and ice thickness, as well as data from an automated weather station and other routinely recorded meteorological data. The results show that icing occurred during the passage of a cold front, with a high-pressure system and a cold temperature trough at 850 hPa, and a southeasterly at 500 hPa that provided abundant moisture. Ice formation usually started in the evening or early morning, and ice shed around noon the following day when the temperature was-1°C to 0°C. The averaged liquid water content of the fog droplet was distinctly greater during the growth period than during the other three periods, and there was precipitation during the growth period in each case of ice accretion. The growth rate of the ice thickness was clearly correlated with the liquid water content, with a correlation coefficient of 0.62. | 3 | Effect of moxa smoke produced during combustion of Aiye(Folium Artemisiae Argyi) on behavioral changes in mice inhaling the smoke显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects that inhalation of the combustion products of the traditional Chinese herb Aiye(Folium Artemisiae Argyi) has on the central nervous system.METHODS: Forty Kunming mice(half male) were randomly assigned(n = 10/group) to a control group(C) or one of three moxa smoke concentration groups(% opacity): low(L1; 0.4%), medium(M1; 2%), and high(H1; 15%). Mice in the latter three groups were exposed to moxa smoke in a dynamic gas exposure cabinet for 20 min per day for7 days. Mice in control group were placed in the same cabinet without any intervention. For the sleep experiments, another 50 mice were divided into five groups of 10 mice each: a saline-injected control group, L1 + pentobarbital sodium(PS)-injected group, M1+PS group, H1(15%)+PS group,and a positive control group(10 mg/kg, chlorpromazine, p.o.). The weight, general activities, locomotor activities, rotarod performance, sleep duration,and sleeping rate induced by a subthreshold dose of pentobarbital sodium were recorded in the mice,and the composition of moxa smoke was analyzed using headspace gas chromatography(GC-HS).RESULTS: A low concentration of smoke significantly decreased the frequency of locomotor activities and the time for which the mice remaining on the rotarod; however, a high smoke concentration significantly prolonged the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time and sleeping rate.CONCLUSION: The concentration-dependent relaxing effects of moxa smoke on the Central Nervous System(CNS) were confirmed. Moreover, GC-HS analysis showed that the component present in the highest concentration in moxa smoke was eucalyp-tol, an essential oil well recognized for its soothing effects on the CNS. Remarkable increase in flexural strength at room temperatures was obtained by adding nanoparticlesin Si3N4 matrix with 10% (wt pct) of nano-Si3N4 and 15% of nano-TiC. The flexural strength, fracture toughnessand hardness were 1025 MPa, 7.5 MPa·m1/2 and 15.6 GPa, respectively. The microstructures of materials wereanalyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which indicated thatTiC nanoparticles distribute in the matrix and at the grain boundaries. According to the fracture form, low contentsof nano particles could refine matrix grains and lead to the track deflection as well as crack pinning.
