2Development and first evaluation of an attractant impregnated adhesive tape against blood-sucking flies显示文摘Stable flies are one of the most important arthropod pests of livestock that reduce cattle weight gain and milk production leading to annual economic losses in excess of$2 billion to the US cattle industry.The host-seeking behavior is primarily mediated by associated odors from stable fly larval development environments and host animals.The present paper reports the development and evaluation of attractant-impregnated adhesive tapes to reduce stable fly attacks on cattle.Laboratory bioassays showed that only m-cresol impregnated adhesive tapes caught significantly more stable flies(16±1)than the control tape without attractant added(7±1),with a 77%fly recapture rate.Attractant-impregnated adhesive tapes deployed in cattle feedlots showed significant impacts in reducing fly population,with a total of one million stable flies captured over a period of three weeks(mean catches from 57596 to 102088 stable flies per trap per week).It further relieved cattle stress with a significant reduction of biting fly avoidance behavior,(6±0.4 cows observed with tail wagging in control vs.3±0.4 from the trap-deployed).The efficacy of the developed tapes lasted up to 1-week longevity,although 70%of m-cresol was released starting from the second day.The m-cresol impregnated adhesive tape provided an 80%reduction in cattle stress due to stable fly attack.This is the first report of a technology developed by integrating an attractant compound into an adhesive material on a plastic film with demonstrated effectiveness in trapping biting flies that attack livestock animals.Junwei J.Zhu Gwang-Hyun Roh Yosuke Asamoto Kujtim Bizati Jen-Chieh Liu Alexander Lehmann Kyle Harrison David BTaylor Hironao Otake 2022Insect Science2022,29,2:0
3Did maize domestication and early spread mediate the population genetics of corn leafhopper?显示文摘Investigating how crop domestication and early farming mediated crop attributes, distributions, and interactions with antagonists may shed light on today's agricultural pest problems. Crop domestication generally involved artificial selection for traits desirable to early farmers, for example, in creased productivity or yield, and enhanced qualities, though invariably it altered the interactions between crops and insects, and expanded the geographical ranges of crops. Thus, some studies suggest that with crop domestication and spread, insect populations on wild crop ancestors gave rise to pestiferous insect populations on crops. Here, we addressed whether the emergence of corn leafhopper (Dalbulus ma id is) as an agricultural pest may be associated with domestication and early spread of maize (Zea mays mays). We used AFLP markers and mitochondrial COI sequences to assess population genetic structuring and haplotype relationships among corn leafhopper samples from maize and its wild relative Zea diploperennis from multiple locations in Mexico and Argentina. We uncovered seven corn leafhopper haplotypes contained within two haplogroups, one haplogroup containing haplotypes associated with maize and the other containing haplotypes associated with Z. diploperennis in a mountainous habitat. Within the first haplogroup, one haplotype was predominant across Mexican locations, and another across Argentinean locations;both were considered pestiferous. We suggested that the divergence times of the maize-associated haplogroup and of the 'pestiferous' haplotypes are correlated with the chronology of maize spread following its domestication. Overall, our results support a hypothesis positing that maize domestication favored corn leafhopper genotypes preadapted for exploiting maize so that they became pestiferous, and that with the geographical expansi on of maize farming, corn leafhopper colonized Z. diploperennis, a host exclusive to secluded habitats that serves as a refuge for archaic corn leafhopper genotypic diversity.
