| 1 | Analysis of in vivo patterns of caspase 3 gene expression in primary hepatocellular carcinoma and its relationship to p21^(WAF1) expression and hepatic apoptosis显示文摘AIM To detect the expression of caspase 3gene in primary human hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)and investigate its relationship to p21WAF1gene expression and HCC apoptosis.METHODS In situ hybridization was employedto determine caspase 3 and p21WAF1expression inHCC.In situ end-labeling was used to detecthepatocytic apoptosis in HCC.RESULTS Twenty-one of 39(53.8%)cases ofHCC were found to express caspase 3transcripts,while 45.2% of HCC failed toexpress caspase 3.Non-cancerous adjacent livertissues showed more positive caspase 3(87.5%,7/8)as compared with HCC(P<0.05).The expression of caspase 3 is correlated withHCC differentiation,72.2%(13/18)ofmoderately to highly differentiated HCC showedcaspase 3 transcripts positive,while only 38.1%of poorly differentiated HCC harbored caspase 3transcripts(P<0.05).No relationship wasfound between caspase 3 expression and tumorsize or grade or metastasis,although 52.5%(5/8)of HCC with metastasis were caspase 3positive and a little higher than that with nometastasis(51.6%,P>0.05).Expression of caspase 3 alone did not affect the apoptosisindex(AI)of HCC.The AI was 7.12%o in caspase3-positive tumors(n=21),while in caspase 3-negative cases(n=18)6.59%0(P>0.05).Expression of caspase 3 clearly segregated withp21WAF1positive tumors as compared withp21WAF1-negative cases(16 of 23,69.6% versus5 of 16,31.3%)with statistical significance(P=0.017).In the cases with positive caspase 3and negative p21WAF1,the Al was found slightlyhigher,but with no statistical significance,thanthat with expression of p21WAF1and caspase 3(7.21‰ vs 6.98‰,P>0.05).CONCLUSION Loss of caspase 3 expressionmay contribute to HCC carcinogenesis,althoughthe expression of caspase 3 does not correlatewell with cell apoptosis in HCC.p21WAF1may bemerely one of the inhibitors which can reducecaspase 3 mediated cell apoptosis in HCCs. | Bao Hua Sun Jun Zhang Bao JǜWang Xi Ping Zhao You Kun Wang Zhi Qun Yu Dong Liang Yang Lian Jie Hao Department of Clinical Immunology,Tongji Hospital,Tongji Medical University,Wuhan 430030,Hubei Province,China | 2000 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2000,6,3: | 65 |

| 6 | Additive manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V lattice structures with high structural integrity under large compressive deformation显示文摘Additively manufactured Ti-6 Al-4 V lattice structures have found important niche applications. However, they often show insufficient compressive ductility or insufficient structural integrity. In this study,a batch of 45 octahedral Ti-6 Al-4 V lattice structures was manufactured in three different strut diameters(0.5, 1.0, 1.5 mm) by selective electron beam melting(SEBM). The influence of post-SEBM annealing on the compressive deformation characteristics of the lattice structure was investigated. The as-built Ti-6 Al-4 V lattices fragmented when the compressive strain reached 13%–23% depending on strut diameter.Annealing at 950?C(β transus temperature: 995?C) only slightly improved the compressive ductility of the lattice structures. However, annealing at 1050?C(β-annealing) fundamentally changed the compressive deformation mode of the lattice structures. | 7 | Acupuncture at heterotopic acupoints enhances jejunal motility in constipated and diarrheic rats显示文摘AIM:To investigate the effect and mechanism of acupuncture at heterotopic acupoints on jejunal motility,particularly in pathological conditions.METHODS:Jejunal motility was assessed using a manometric balloon placed in the jejunum approximately18-20 cm downstream from the pylorus and filled with approximately 0.1 m L warm water in anesthetized normal rats or rats with diarrhea or constipation.The heterotopic acupoints including LI11(Quchi),ST37(Shangjuxu),BL25(Dachangshu),and the homotopic acupoint ST25(Tianshu),and were stimulated for 60 s by rotating acupuncture needles right and left at a frequency of 2 Hz.To determine the type of afferent fibers mediating the regulation of jejunal motility by manual acupuncture,the ipsilateral sciatic A or C fibers of ST37 were inactivated by local application of the A-fiber selective demyelination agent cobra venom or the C fiber blocker capsaicin.Methoctramine,a selective M2 receptor antagonist,was injected intravenously to identify a specific role for M2 receptors in mediating the effect of acupuncture on jejunal motility.RESULTS:Acupuncture at heterotopic acupoints,such as LI11 and ST37,increased jejunal motility not only in normal rats,but also in rats with constipation or diarrhea.In normal rats,manual acupuncture at LI11 or ST37 enhanced jejunal pressure from 7.34±0.19 cmH2O to 7.93±0.20 cm H2O,an increase of 9.05%±0.82%(P<0.05),and from 6.95±0.14 cm H2O to 8.97±0.22cm H2O,a significant increase of 27.44%±1.96%(P<0.01),respectively.In constipated rats,manual acupuncture at LI11 or ST37 increased intrajejunal pressure from8.17±0.31 cm H2O to 9.86±0.36 cm H2O,an increase of 20.69%±2.10%(P<0.05),and from 8.82±0.28cm H2O to 10.83±0.28 cm H2O,an increase of 22.81%±1.46%(P<0.05),respectively.In rats with diarrhea,MA at LI11 or ST37 increased intrajejunal pressure from 11.95±0.35 cm H2O to 13.96±0.39 cm H2O,an increase of 16.82%±2.35%(P<0.05),and tended to increase intrajejunal pressure(from 12.42±0.38 cm H2O to 13.05±0.38 cm H2O,an increase of 5.07%±1.08%,P>0.05),respectively.In contrast,acupuncture ST25,a homotopic acupoint,decreased not only intrajejunal pressure,but also significantly decreased frequency in normal rats and rats with constipation or diarrhea.Following demyelination of Aδfibers,acupuncture at ST37again augmented intrajejunal pressure to 121.48%±3.06%of baseline.Following capsaicin application for24 h,acupuncture at ipsilateral ST37 increased intrajejunal pressure significantly to 106.63%±1.26%of basallevels when compared to measurements prior to capsaicin treatment(P<0.05).Acupuncture at LI11,ST37,or BL25 significantly rescued methoctramine-mediated inhibition of jejunal motility amplitude from 42.83%±1.65%to 53.43%±1.95%of baseline(P<0.05),from45.15%±2.22%to 70.51%±2.34%of baseline(P<0.01),and from 38.03%±2.34%to 70.12%±2.22%of baseline(P<0.01),respectively.CONCLUSION:Acupuncture at heterotopic acupoints increases the amplitude of jejunal motility in rats.C fibers and M2 receptors predominantly and partially mediate the regulation of jejunal motility by acupuncture,respectively. | Qing-Guang Qin Xin-Yan Gao Kun Liu Xiao-Chun Yu Liang Li Hai-Ping Wang Bing Zhu | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,48: | 12 |

As NbN Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor(SIS) mixers used for terahertz detection, which are studied by the Purple Mountain Observatory(PMO), Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), work at 8–10 K, and require condition of micro vibrations, its astronomical observation in aerospace is limited by suitable refrigeration method. 4 K high frequency pulse tube cryocooler developed by Key Laboratory of Space Energy Conversion Technologies(SECT), Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry(TIPC), CAS, offers an opportunity for the application of SIS mixers. This article introduces the progress of the two-stage high frequency pulse tube cryocooler researched by TIPC. The cryocooler has reached a no load temperature of 4.5 K which is the lowest temperature for this kind of cryocooler reported so far. | 9 | Tumor-associated macrophages in liver cancer:From mechanisms to therapy显示文摘Multidimensional analyses have demonstrated the presence of a unique tumor microenvironment(TME)in liver cancer.Tumor-associated macrophages(TAMs)are among the most abundant immune cells infiltrating the TME and are present at all stages of liver cancer progression,and targeting TAMs has become one of the most favored immunotherapy strategies.In addition,macrophages and liver cancer cells have distinct origins.At the early stage of liver cancer,macrophages can provide a niche for the maintenance of liver cancer stem cells.In contrast,cancer stem cells(CSCs)or poorly differentiated tumor cells are key factors modulating macrophage activation.In the present review,we first propose the origin connection between precursor macrophages and liver cancer cells.Macrophages undergo dynamic phenotypic transition during carcinogenesis.In this course of such transition,it is critical to determine the appropriate timing for therapy and block specific markers to suppress protumoral TAMs.The present review provides a more detailed discussion of transition trends of such surface markers than previous reviews.Complex crosstalk occurs between TAMs and liver cancer cells.TAMs play indispensable roles in tumor progression,angiogenesis,and autophagy due to their heterogeneity and robust plasticity.In addition,macrophages in the TME interact with other immune cells by directing cell-to-cell contact or secreting various effector molecules.Similarly,tumor cells combined with other immune cells can drive macrophage recruitment and polarization.Despite the latest achievements and the advancements in treatment strategies following TAMs studies,comprehensive discussions on the communication between macrophages and cancer cells or immune cells in liver cancer are currently lacking.In this review,we discussed the interactions between TAMs and liver cancer cells(from cell origin to maturation),the latest therapeutic strategies(including chimeric antigen receptor macrophages),and critical clinical trials for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)and intrahepatic cholangiocar-cinoma(iCCA)to provide a rationale for further clinical investigation of TAMs as a potential target for treating patients with liver cancer. | Kun Cheng Ning Cai Jinghan Zhu Xing Yang Huifang Liang Wanguang Zhang | 2022 | Cancer Communications2022,42,11: | 10 |

| 11 | Preliminary study of a new pathological evolution-based clinical hepatolithiasis classification显示文摘AIM:To investigate clinical features,treatment strategies and outcomes of patients with hepatolithiasis(HL)undergoing surgical treatment,using a new clinicalclassification.METHODS:Sixty-eight HL patients were hospitalized and treated surgically from August 2011 to December2012 and they were classified into four HL types according to pathological evolution of the disease.These four HL types included typeⅠprimary type(defined as no previous biliary tract surgery),typeⅡinflammatory type(with previous biliary tract surgery and cholangitis),typeⅢmass-forming type(HL complicated by hepatic mass-forming lesion),and typeⅣterminal type(with secondary biliary cirrhosis and resultant portal hypertension).The perioperative data including general information,imaging data,postoperative complications,and immediate and final stone clearance rate were obtained and analyzed.RESULTS:In all 68 patients,the proportion of HL typeⅠ-Ⅳwas 50%(34/68),36.8%(25/68),10.3%(7/68)and 2.8%(2/68),respectively.Abdominal pain was the main clinical manifestation in typeⅠ(88.2%),fever was predominant in typeⅡ(52.0%),the malignancy rate in typeⅢwas high(71.4%),and portal hypertension and spleen enlargement were common in typeⅣ(2/2,100.0%).Liver resection rate for typesⅠ-Ⅲwas 79.4%,72.0%and 71.4%,respectively.The overall incidence of postoperative complications was23.5%(16/68).There were no perioperative deaths.The average length of hospital stay was 12.7±7.3 d.Immediate and final stone clearance rate was 73.5%(50/68)and 89.7%(61/68),respectively.Fifty-nine of68 patients(86.8%)were followed-up for>1 year after surgery,and 96.6%of these patients(57/59)had a good quality of life according to a criterion recommended for postoperative evaluation of quality of life.CONCLUSION:The pathological evolution-based clinical classification of HL has a role in optimizingtreatment strategy,and patients can benefit from thisclassification when it is used properly. | Fu-Bao Liu Xiao-Jun Yu Guo-Bing Wang Yi-Jun Zhao Kun Xie Fan Huang Jiang-Ming Cheng Xin-Rao Wu Chao-Jie Liang Xiao-Ping Geng | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,7: | 9 |

| 14 | Application of video-assisted thoracic surgery in the standard operation for thoracic tumors显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the short-term outcomes of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for thoracic tumors. Methods: The data of 1,790 consecutive patients were retrospectively reviewed. These patients underwent VATS pulmonary resections, VATS esophagectomies, and VATS resections of mediastinal tumors or biopsies at the Cancer Institute & Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences between January 2009 and January 2012. Results: There were 33 patients converted to open thoracotomy (OT, 1.84%). The overall morbidity and mortality rate was 2.79% (50/1790) and 0.28% (5/1790), respectively. The overall hospitalization and chest tube duration were shorter in the VATS lobectomy group (n=949) than in the open thoracotomy (OT) lobectomy group (n=753). There were no significant differences in morbidity rate, mortality rate and operation time between the two groups. In the esophageal cancer patients, no significant difference was found in the number of nodal dissection, chest tube duration, morbidity rate, mortality rate, and hospital length of stay between the VATS esophagectomy group (n=81) and open esophagectomy group (n=81). However, the operation time was longer in the VATS esophagectomy group. In the thymoma patients, there was no significant difference in the chest tube duration, morbidity rate, mortality rate, and hospital length of stay between the VATS thymectomy group (n=41) and open thymectomy group (n=41). However, the operation time was longer in the VATS group. The median tumor size in the VATS thymectomy group was comparable with that in the OT group. Conclusions: In early-stage (I/II) non-small cell lung cancer patients who underwent lobectomies, VATS is comparable with the OT approach with similar short-term outcomes. In patients with resectable esophageal cancer, VATS esophagectomy is comparable with OT esophagectomy with similar morbidity and mortality. VATS thymectomy for Masaoka stage I and II thymoma is feasible and safe, and tumor size is not contraindicated. | 16 | Identification of autophagy signaling network that contributes to stroke in the ischemic rodent brain via gene expression显示文摘Autophagy plays a vital role in cerebral ischemia and may be a potential target for developing novel therapy for stroke. In this study, we constructed an autophagy-related pathway network by analyzing the genes related to autophagy and ischemic stroke, and the risk genes were screened. Two autophagy-related modules were significantly up-regulated and clustered to influence cerebral ischemia. Besides, three key modular genes(NFKB1, RELA, and STAT3) were revealed. With 5-fold cross validation, the ROC curves of NFKB1, RELA, and STAT3 were 0.8256, 0.8462, and 0.8923. They formed a complex module and competitively mediated the activation of autophagy in cerebral ischemia. In the long term, it is necessary to increase the development efficiency of block matrix, surfactant-aided imbibition is a potential way. The current work aimed to explain comprehensively how surfactants can enhance the imbibition rate. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the effects of wettability, interfacial tension(IFT), and relative permeability as the key parameters underlying surfactant solution imbibition. Two different types of surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate and polyethylene glycol octylphenol ether, at varied concentrations were tested on reservoir rocks. Experimental results showed that the oil recovery rate increased with increased wettability alteration and IFT and decreased residual oil saturation. A mechanistic simulator developed in previous studies was used to perform parametric analysis after successful laboratory-scale validation. Results were proven by parametric studies. DUS Test Guidelines are not only the technical manuals for the DUS testing authorities to conduct the testing, but also the technical standards for the competent authorities to examine the DUS of new varieties of plants. Tea plant, originated from Yunnan Province, China, is a very important woody cash species in the world. The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) DUS Test Guidelines for tea plant is the first Test Guidelines prepared by China for the UPOV. In this article, the subject, selection, and determination of characteristics, states of expression of characteristics and the selection of example varieties, assessment of the UPOV DUS Test Guidelines for tea plant were elucidated in detail. Finally, the proposal of PVP for tea plant in China was also proposed. | 20 | QTL analysis of ear leaf traits in maize(Zea mays L.)under different planting densities显示文摘Modem maize varieties have become more productive than ever, owing largely to increased tolerance of high plant density. However, the genetics of ear leaf traits under different densities remains poorly understood. In this study, Zhongdan 909 recombinant inbred lines(RILs) derived from a cross between Z58 and HD568 were genotyped for 3072 single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs), and phenotyped for leaf length(LL), leaf width(LW), and leaf angle(LA) of the uppermost ear leaf under three planting densities(52,500,67,500, and 82,500 plants ha-1, respectively). A genetic map was then constructed using1358 high-quality SNPs. The total length of the linkage map was 1985.2 cM and the average interval between adjacent markers 1.46 cM. With increasing density, LL and LW decreased from 63.68 to 63.02 cm and from 8.56 to 8.21 cm, respectively, while LA increased from19.42° to 19.66°. All three traits had high heritabilities, of 0.75, 0.78, and 0.84, respectively.Using inclusive composite interval mapping, 23, 25, and 17 quantitative trait loci(QTL) were detected for LL, LW, and LA, respectively. Of these, 35 were simultaneously detected under two or three plant densities, while 30 were detected under only one.
