| 1 | Antihyperglycemic and antioxidant effects of Solanum xanthocarpum leaves(field grown & in vitro raised) extracts on alloxan induced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate antidiabetic efficacy of the extract of field grown and in vitro raised leaves of Solanum xanthocarpum(S.xanthocarpum) against alloxan induced diabetic rats. Methods:The antidiabetic activity of the crude methanol extracts of the field grown and in vitro raised leaves of S.xanthocarpum at different concentrations(100-200 mg/kg bw) was tested against alloxan induced diabetic rats.The antidiabetic efficacy was validated through various biochemical parameters and the antioxidant effect was also determined.The phytochemical analyses of field grown S.xanthocarpum and in vitro rasied 5.xanthocarpum leaves were done by estimating their chlorophyll,carotenoids,total sugar,protein,amino acid and minerals contents. Results:The results revealed that the methanol extracts of both the leaves(field grown and in vitro raised) of S.xanthocarpum was efficient anti hyperglycemic agents at a concentration of 200 mg/kg bw and posses potent antioxidant activity.However,the extracts of in vitro rasied S.xanthocarpum raised leaves exhibit higher efficacy than the field grown leaves in all tested concentrations.Proximal composition and mineral analysis of S.xanthocarpum revealed higher concentration of contents in in vitro rasied S.xanthocarpum than field grown S.xanthocarpum. | 2 | Anti-microbial principles of selected remedial plants from Southern India显示文摘Objective:To examine the anti-bacterial activity of leaf extracts of Morus alba L.(Moraceae)and Piper betel L.(Piperaceae),and seed extracts of Bombax ceiba L.(Borabacaceae).Methods:We have partially purified plant extracts by solvent extraction method,and evaluated the effect of individual fractions on bacterial growth using Escherichia coli(E.coli),Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P.aeruginosa) and Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus) bacterial strains.Results:Compared with Morus and Bombax fractions,Piper fractions showed significant growth inhibition on all the three types of bacteria studied.The EtOAc-hexane fractions of Piper leaves exhibited significant antibacterial activity with minimum inhibitory concentrations(MIC) of 50 μg/mL culture against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.The EtOAc-fractions Ⅰ,Ⅱ,and Ⅳ inhibited bacterial colony formation on soft agar in addition to growth inhibition.A combination treatment of piper fractions with ampicillin resulted in significant growth inhibition in E.coli and P.aeruginosa,and combination with anticancer drug geldanamycin(2 μg/mL) showed selective growth inhibition against P.aeruginosa and S.aureus.Three major compounds,i.e.,eugenol,3-hexene-ol and stigmasterol,were primarily identified from Piper betel leaf extractions.Among the individual compounds,eugenol treatment showed improved growth inhibition compared with stigmasterol and 3-hexene-ol.Conclusions:We are reporting potential anti-bacterial compounds from Piper betel against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria either alone or in combination with drug treatment. | Tirupathi Rao G Suresh Babu K J Ujwal Kumar Sujana P A Veerabhadr Raoa Sreedhar AS | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,4: | 5 |
| 3 | Synthesis and evaluation of novel analogues of mangiferin as potent antipyretic显示文摘Objective:To screen different analogues of mangiferin pharmacologically for antipyretic activity. Methods:The naturally occurring xanthone glycoside mangiferin was isolated by column chromatography from the elhanolic extract of stem bark of Mangifera indica.Mangiferin was further converted to 5-(N-phenylamino methyleno) mangiferin.5-(N-p-chlorophenylamino methyleno) mangiferin,5-(N-2-methyl phenylamino methyleno) mangiferin.5-(N-p-methoxy phenylamino methyleno) mangiferin.5-(N,N-diphenylamino methyleno) mangiferin,5-(N-α-napthylamino methyleno) mangiferin and 5-(N-4-methyl phenylamino methyleno) mangiferin analogues.The synthesized compounds were further screened for antipyretic activity along with mangiferin at a dose level of 100 and 200 tng/kg.Mangiferin and its analogues were characterized by melting point and R_f value determination and through spectral technique like UV,IR,and NMR spectral analysis.Results:The antipyretic activity of mangiferin as well as all analogues was found to be more significant in at higher dose ie.200 mg/kg which was depicted thmugh a decrease in rectal temperature up to 3 h.Conclusions:The antipyretic activity of mangiferin and its analogues may be attributed to inhibition in synthesis of TNF-αand anti-oxidant activity associated with amelioration of inflammatory actions of cytokines. | Shashi Kant Singh Saurabh K Sinha SK Prasad R Kumar Bhawani S Bithu S Sadish Kumar P Singh | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,11: | 4 |

| 5 | Spinosad and neem seed kernel extract as bio-controlling agents for malarial vector,Anopheles stephensi and non-biting midge,Chironomus circumdatus显示文摘Objective:Midge egg masses are reported to support non-pathogenic strains of the cholera pathogen.Vibrio cholera(V.cholera).Mosquito born diseases have been reported to cause millions of death worldwide.The present research reveals the toxicity effect of spinosad and neem seed kernel extract(NSKE) against different larval stages of Anopheles stephensi(An.stephensi) and Chironomus circumdatus(Ch.circumdatus).Methods:The neem seeds were collected from Marudamalai hills,Bharathiar University,Coimbatore,India.Neem seed kernels were powdered,extracted and diluted for different concentrations(2 ppm to 10 ppm).Spinosad was purchased from Kalpatharu pesticide Limited,Coimbatore,Tamil Nadu,India and thoroughly mixed with distilled water to prepare various concentrations(0.01 to 0.08 ppm) and used for bioassay.Results:The results depict that spinosad is more toxic in lower concentrations when compared to NSKE and mosquitoes are more susceptible than chironomids.Lethal concentrations were evaluated using the observed mortality.The lowest LC50 value obtained from spinosad against An.stephensi and Ch.circumdalus were 0.002 05 ppm and 0.008 91 ppm.This study investigated on effect of Spinosad and NSKE on the biology of mosquito.The immature stages of both species were susceptible to Spinosad and NSKE.Spinosad and NSKE in individual as well as combined treatment provided additional days in development for mosquitoes.Conclusions:The results conclude that Spinosad and NSKE are potential larvicides against An.stephensi and Ch. circumdatus. | Kumar AN Murugan K Madhiyazhagan P Prabhu K | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,8: | 2 |
| 6 | Structural and luminescence enhancement properties of Eu^(3+)/Ag nanocrystallites doped SiO_2-TiO_2 matrices显示文摘We reported here the structural and optical characterisation of silver nanocrystallites/Eu3+ :SiO2-TiO2 matrices synthesised through sol-gel route. Structural characterisations were done by using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscope (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements and optical characterisations were performed by absorption and emission spectroscopy. The TEM and XRD measurements confirmed the presence of nanocrystals. A broad absorption band was observed due to surface plasmon resonance of silver nanocrystals. The effect of silver nanocrystals on the emission spectrum of Eu3+ doped SiO2-TiO2 matrices was discussed. An attempt was made to explain this fluorescence enhancement by invoking phenomena such as energy transfer, asymmetry ratio, surface plasmon, surface roughness, crystallinity and grain boundary. Our analysis, based on the experimental results, suggested that all the phenomena except crystallinity and grain boundary had favourable effects on fluorescence enhancement. We also estimated the relevant parameters associated with the phenomena that affected the fluorescence emission from the Eu3+ ions in the matrix. | 7 | Primary pediatric mid-brain lymphoma:Report of a rare pediatric tumor in a rare location显示文摘Primary central nervous system lymphoma(PCNSL) is a rare disease in pediatric age group. A thirteen-yearold male child presented with complaints of headache for six months, vomiting and diplopia for three days. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a single lesion of 1.7 cm × 1.6 cm × 1.6 cm in the mid brain and tectum. He underwent a gross total resection of the tumor. The histopathological evaluation revealed B cell high grade non Hodgkin lymphoma. The patient was treated with High dose methotrexate and cranio spinal radiation. The patient was alive without disease 12 mo after completion of treatment. This case highlights importance of keeping PCNSL as differential in brain stem lesions of pediatric patients also.
