| 7 | Large Curvature Folding Strategies of Butterfly Proboscis显示文摘Due to its real-time control,high folding ratio,and structure self-locking,flexible large curvature self-folding devices have broad application prospects,such as foldable human implants,flexible electronics,and flexible robots.Driven by this background,flexible large curvature folding butterfly(Polyura eudamippus)proboscises were studied in this work.The folding ratio of the proboscises was about 15.The curvature of coiled proboscises ranged from about 150 m_1 to 880 m The external and internal structures of the proboscises were studied by different methods.Three main strategies for large-curvature folding of proboscises were identified:a gradual decrease in thickness,a lower elastic modulus,and(most importantly)large numbers of regular corrugated cracks arranged on the surface.These corrugated cracks can effectively accommodate the coiled strain and provide space for the large curvature folding of proboscises.Finally,a 4D printed coiled sample with corrugated cracks was fabricated to mimic the proboscises stretching process.Large-curvature folding strategies,based on these proboscises,provide insights for the biomimetic design of artificial highly folded components. | Daobing Chen Honglie Song Qingping Liu Jie Gan Yang Liu Keyu Che' Chong Wang Shifeng Wen Yan Zhou Chunze Yan Junqiu Zhang Yusheng Shi Zhiwu Han | 2020 | Journal of Bionic Engineering2020,17,6: | 1 |

| 9 | Anthropogenic pressures increase extinction risk of an isolated Asian elephant(Elephas maximus)population in southwestern China,as revealed by a combination of molecular-and landscape-scale approaches显示文摘Identification of the effect of anthropogenic threats on ecosystem is crucial.We used molecular tools and remote sensing to evaluate the population status of an isolated Asian elephant population in southwestern China in response to changes in habitat suitability between 1989 and 2019.A total of 22 unique genotypes were identified from 117 dung samples collected between March and June 2018 using microsatellite DNA analysis,including 13 males and 9 females.Based on the size of fecal boli,1 animal was a juvenile,9 were subadults,and 12 were adults,indicating that recruitment was limited.The effective population size was small(15.3)but there was no signature of a recent population bottleneck.We observed a low genetic diversity(He=0.46±0.05)and a high level of inbreeding(Fis of 0.43±0.11),suggesting low population viability and high risk of extinction.In total,these elephants lost nearly two thirds(62%)of their habitat in 3 decades.The expansion of agriculture and rubber plantations followed by an increase in human settlements after 1989 increased the isolation of this population.We recommend that resettlement of 800 inhabitants of 2 villages and the abandonment of associated farmland and rubber plantations would make an additional 20 km2 of suitable habitat available.This could allow a population increase of 14 elephants,possibly by translocating individuals from elsewhere in China.Ourfindings can be applied to the management and conservation of other fragmented populations in China or in other range countries of Asian elephants. | Ying CHEN Yakuan SUN Luciano ATZENI Luke GIBSON Mei HUA Keyu LI Kun SHI David DUDGEON | 2022 | Integrative Zoology2022,17,6: | 1 |

| 12 | Mesenchymal stromal cells alleviate acute respiratory distress syndrome through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway显示文摘Mesenchymal stromal cells(MSCs)have been considered a promising alternative for treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS).However,there is significant heterogeneity in their therapeutic efficacy,largely owing to the incomplete understanding of the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic activities of MSCs.Here,we hypothesize that the cholinergic antiinflammatory pathway(CAP),which is recognized as a neuroimmunological pathway,may be involved in the therapeutic mechanisms by which MSCs mitigate ARDS.Using lipopolysaccharide(LPS)and bacterial lung inflammation models,we found that inflammatory cell infiltration and Evans blue leakage were reduced and that the expression levels of choline acetyltransferase(ChAT)and vesicular acetylcholine transporter(VAChT)in lung tissue were significantly increased 6 hours after MSC infusion.When the vagus nerve was blocked orα7 nicotinic acetylcholine(ACh)receptor(α7nAChR)-knockout mice were used,the therapeutic effects of MSCs were significantly reduced,suggesting that the CAP may play an important role in the effects of MSCs in ARDS treatment.Our results further showed that MSC-derived prostaglandin E2(PGE2)likely promoted ACh synthesis and release.Additionally,based on the efficacy of nAChR andα7nAChR agonists,we found that lobeline,the nicotinic cholinergic receptor excitation stimulant,may attenuate pulmonary inflammation and alleviate respiratory symptoms of ARDS patients in a clinical study(ChiCTR2100047403).In summary,we reveal a previously unrecognized MSC-mediated mechanism of CAP activation as the means by which MSCs alleviate ARDS-like syndrome,providing insight into the clinical translation of MSCs or CAP-related strategies for the treatment of patients with ARDS. | Xiaoran Zhang Xuxia Wei Yiwen Deng Xiaofeng Yuan Jiahao Shi Weijun Huang Jing Huang Xiaoyong Chen Shuwei Zheng Jieying Chen Keyu Chen Ruiming Xu Hongmiao Wang Weiqiang Li Shiyue Li Huimin Yi Andy Peng Xiang | 2022 | Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2022,7,10: | 1 |

| 19 | Evaluation of N_2-Fixing Capacities of Herbaceous andShrub Legumes Under Field Condition显示文摘Natural 15N abundance method was used in this study to investigate the N2-fixing capacities of several herbaceous and shrub legumes by a field experiment. For herbaceous legumes, the results were in consistent with those obtained by a pot experiment. Crotalaria mucronata Desv. had a higher N2-fixing capacity than Vigna sinensis (L.) Savi. For shrub legumes, N2-fixing capacity under field condition was slightly different from that in pot experiment. These results demonstrated that the natural 15N abundance method was applicable to evaluating N2-fixing capacities of herbaceous and shrub legumes, and that pot experiment was suitable for evaluating the N2-fixing capacities of not only herbaceous legumes but also shrub legumes.Leguminous N2-fixing plants differed in response to phosphorus fertilization. Phosphorus fertilizer application greatly increased the percentage of nitrogen derived from air (% N dfa) and total amount of N2 fixed by Lespedeza formosa (Vog.) Koehne (Jiangxi). Phosphorus fertilizer showed no significant effect on the N2-fixing percentage of Cajanus cajan (L.)
