| 1 | Garden rue inhibits the arachidonic acid pathway, scavenges free radicals, and elevates FRAP: role in inflammation显示文摘AIM:In the present study,the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the methanol extract of Ruta graveolens leaves(RG-M) were evaluated using various in vivo and in vitro models.METHOD:For anti-inflammatory activity,RG-M was administered by the oral route(p.o.) in a carrageenan–induced paw edema model,and by the intraperitoneal route(i.p.) in an exudative inflammation model.In vitro inhibition of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes was evaluated.In vitro antioxidant activity was also examined.Endogenous antioxidant status was further evaluated by ferric reducing ability of plasma model.RESULTS:RG-M showed maximum inhibition of carrageenan-induced edema(100 mg·kg-1–33.36%; 200 mg·kg-1–45.32% and 400 mg·kg-1–56.28%).In the exudative inflammation model,a significant reduction in leukocyte migration(200 mg·kg-1–54.75% and 400 mg·kg-1–77.97%) and protein exudation(200 mg·kg-1–31.14% and 400 mg·kg-1–49.91%) were observed.RG-M also exhibited inhibition of COX–1(IC50 182.27 μg·mL-1) and COX–2(IC50 190.16 μg·mL-1) as well as 5–LOX(IC50 215.71 μg·mL-1).Antioxidant activity was significant with improved endogenous antioxidant status.CONCLUSION:The results demonstrated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of RG-M with potent inhibitory effects on the arachidonic acid pathways. | Manjir Sarma Kataki Bibhuti B Kakoti Biman Bhuyan Ananya Rajkumari Prakash Rajak | 2014 | Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines2014,12,3: | 3 |
| 2 | Gene expression profile of esophageal cancer in North East India by cDNA microarray analysis显示文摘AIM: To identify alterations in genes and molecular functional pathways in esophageal cancer in a high incidence region of India where there is a widespread use of tobacco and betel quid with fermented areca nuts. METHODS: Total RNA was isolated from tumor and matched normal tissue of 16 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Pooled tumor tissue RNA was labeled with Cy3-dUTP and pooled normal tissue RNA was labeled with Cy5-dUTP by direct labeling method. The labeled probes were hybridized with human 10K cDNA chip and expression profiles were analyzed by Genespring GX V 7.3 (Silicon Genetics). RESULTS: Nine hundred twenty three genes were differentially expressed. Of these, 611 genes were upregulated and 312 genes were downregulated. Using stringent criteria (P ≤ 0.05 and ≥ 1.5 fold change), 127 differentially expressed genes (87 upregulated and 40 downregulated) were identified in tumor tissue. On the basis of Gene Ontology, four different molecular functional pathways (MAPK pathway, G-protein coupled receptor family, ion transport activity, and serine or threonine kinase activity) were most significantly upregulated and six different molecular functional pathways (structural constituent of ribosome, endopeptidase inhibitor activity, structural constituent of cytoskeleton, antioxidant activity, acyl group transferase activity, eukaryotic translation elongation factor activity) were most significantly downregulated. CONCLUSION: Several genes that showed alterations in our study have also been reported from a high incidence area of esophageal cancer in China. | 3 | Nasopharyngeal carcinoma in the Northeastern states of India显示文摘Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is a rare disease in most parts of the world, except for Southeast Asia, some parts of North Africa and the Arctic. It is mostly seen in people of Chinese origin. In India, NPC is also rare, except for the Hill States of Northeast India, particularly Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. The striking feature of NPC in Northeast India is that the incidence ranges over the complete spectrum from the lowest (as 0.5/100 000 to 2.0/100 000 among Caucasoid) to the highest (as ~20/100 000 among Cantonese/Zhongshan dialect Chinese). The age-adjusted rate of NPC in Kohima district of Nagaland State is 19.4/100 000, which is among the highest recorded rates. By contrast, in Assam, one of the so-called Hill States but not itself a hilly state, NPC is much less common. The Northeastern region is distinguished by a preponderance of the Tibeto-Burman languages and by variable mongoloid features among peoples of the region. The nature of the migratory populations who are presumed to be bearers of the mongoloid risk is unknown, but these NPC occurrence features provide an outstanding opportunity for NPC risk investigation, such as that of the hypothesis of Wee et al. for westward displacement of Chinese aborigines following the last glacial maximum. | Amal Chandra Kataki Malcolm J.
