| 1 | Evaluation of the effect of acupuncture on hand pain,functional deficits and health-related quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis--A study protocol for a multicenter,double-blind,randomized clinical trial显示文摘BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis(RA) is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by functional disability and pain. Although acupuncture is widely used, until now Western acupuncture studies on RA have not shown conclusive positive results. Acupuncture is regarded as a reflex therapy that has effects on the human autonomic nervous system. By establishing a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) diagnosis first, the practitioner is able to choose acupoints according to the state of each individual patient.METHODS/DESIGN: We are interested if acupuncture, using a classical diagnostic procedure to allocate acupoints to the patient according to the Shang Han Lun theory, can be effective in relieving pain, improving hand function and increasing health-related quality of life in RA.The authors intend to harmonize TCM diagnosis according to clinical and genetic profiles. Patients with the TCM diagnosis of a so-called Turning Point syndrome will be followed up in a randomized, prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter and three-armed parallel-group study with a standardized treatment in order to optimize potential therapeutic effects of acupuncture on pain, strength and muscle function of patients with RA as well as the influence on inflammation and quality of life.DISCUSSION: The findings of this study will provide important clinical information about the feasibility and efficacy of acupuncture treatment for RA patients. | 2 | Prospective cohort comparison of flavonoid treatment in patients with resected colorectal cancer to prevent recurrence显示文摘AIM: To investigate biological prevention with flavonoids the recurrence risk of neoplasia was studied in patients with resected colorectal cancer and after adenoma polypectomy. METHODS: Eighty-seven patients, 36 patients with resected colon cancer and 51 patients after polypectomy, were divided into 2 groups: one group was treated with a flavonoid mixture (daily standard dose 20 mg apigenin and 20 mg epigallocathechin-gallat, n = 31) and compared with a matched control group (n = 56). Both groups were observed for 3-4 years by surveillance colonoscopy and by questionnaire. RESULTS: Of 87 patients enrolled in this study, 36 had resected colon cancer and 29 of these patients had surveillance colonoscopy. Among the flavonoid-treated patients with resected colon cancer (n = 14), there was no cancer recurrence and one adenoma developed. In contrast the cancer recurrence rate of the 15 matched untreated controls was 20% (3 of 15) and adenomas evolved in 4 of those patients (27%). The combined recurrence rate for neoplasia was 7% (1 of 14) in the treated patients and 47% (7 of 15) in the controls (P = 0.027). | 4 | Disparities of conjugating protective enzyme activities in the colon of patients with adenomas and carcinomas显示文摘AIM:To investigate the metabolic enzymatic capacity of the colon mucosa to detoxify noxious carcinogenic compounds.METHODS:We investigated the activity of 2 conjugating enzymes-the microsomal uridine glucuronosyltransferase(UGT)and the cytosomal glutathione S-transferase(GST)in the uninvolved mucosa of the colon transversum and sigmoideum in patients with adenomatous polyps and colorectal cancer.Biopsies were taken from the mucosa during colonoscopies which were done for clinical(diagnostic)reasons.After storage,the biopsy material was homogenized and after differential centrifugation the enzyme assays were performed with 4-nitrophenol(UGT)and 1-chloro 2,4-dinitrobenzene(GST)as substrates.RESULTS:About 48 patients were included of which28 had adenomas and 20 had colorectal carcinomas confirmed by histopathology.Enzyme activities were expressed as nmol/mg per minute protein for the GST and as pmol/mg per minute protein for the UGT.Analysis of variance(F-test)indicated that both enzymes were more widely distributed in adenoma than in cancer patients.The means±SD were smaller for cancer patients:GST for adenomas 268±152 vs 241±69 for carcinomas and UGT for adenomas 197±200 vs 150±86 for carcinomas.CONCLUSION:Compared to patients with adenomatous colon polyps those with colorectal carcinoma exhibited a lower capacity of detoxifying enzyme metabolism and their activities clustered over a smaller range. | Harald P Hoensch Hennie MJ Roelofs Lutz Edler Wilhelm Kirch Wilbert HM Peters | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,36: | 3 |
| 5 | Experimental proof of Joule heating-induced switched-back regions in OLEDs显示文摘Organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs)have become a major pixel technology in the display sector,with products spanning the entire range of current panel sizes.The ability to freely scale the active area to large and random surfaces paired with flexible substrates provides additional application scenarios for OLEDs in the general lighting,automotive,and signage sectors.These applications require higher brightness and,thus,current density operation compared to the specifications needed for general displays.As extended transparent electrodes pose a significant ohmic resistance,OLEDs suffering from Joule self-heating exhibit spatial inhomogeneities in electrical potential,current density,and hence luminance.In this article,we provide experimental proof of the theoretical prediction that OLEDs will display regions of decreasing luminance with increasing driving current.With a two-dimensional OLED model,we can conclude that these regions are switched back locally in voltage as well as current due to insufficient lateral thermal coupling.Experimentally,we demonstrate this effect in lab-scale devices and derive that it becomes more severe with increasing pixel size,which implies its significance for large-area,high-brightness use cases of OLEDs.Equally,these non-linear switching effects cannot be ignored with respect to the long-term operation and stability of OLEDs;in particular,they might be important for the understanding of sudden-death scenarios. | Anton Kirch Axel Fischer Matthias Liero Jurgen Fuhrmann Annegret Glitzky Sebastian Reineke | 2020 | Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1: | 2 |
