| 1 | Buoyancy and turbulence-driven atmospheric circulation over urban areas显示文摘In the buoyancy and turbulence-driven atmospheric circulations(BTDAC) that occur over urban areas where the approach means wind speeds are very low(less than turbulent fluctuations and typically < 3 m/sec), the surface temperatures are significantly higher than those in the external rural areas, and the atmosphere above the mixing layer is stably stratified. In this paper, the mechanisms of BTDAC formation are studied through laboratory experiments and modelling, with additional low-level inflow from external rural areas and a divergent outflow in the opposite direction in the upper part of the mixed layer. Strong turbulent plumes in the central region mix the flow between lower and higher levels up to the inversion height. There are shear-driven turbulent eddies and weaker buoyant plumes around the periphery of the urban area. As the approach flow is very weak,the recirculating streamlines within the dome restrict the ventilation, and the dispersion of pollution emitted from sources below the inversion height leading to a rise in the mean concentration. Low-level air entrained from rural areas can, however, improve ventilation and lower this concentration. This trend can also be improved if the recirculating structure of the BTDAC flow pattern over urban areas breaks down as a result of the surface temperature distribution not being symmetrical, or as the approach wind speed increases to a level comparable with the mean velocity of circulation, or(except near the equator) the urban area is large enough that the Coriolis acceleration is significant. | Yifan Fan Julian Charles Roland Hunt Yuguo Li | 2017 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,9: | 2 |

| 6 | Methodology for ranking controllable parameters to enhance operation of a steam generator with a combined Artificial Neural Network and Design of Experiments approach显示文摘The operation of complex systems can drift away from the initial design conditions,due to environmental condi-tions,equipment wear or specific restrictions.Steam generators are complex equipment and their proper opera-tion relies on the identification of their most relevant parameters.An approach to rank the operational parameters of a subcritical steam generator of an actual 360 MW power plant is presented.An Artificial Neural Network-ANN delivers a model to estimate the steam generator efficiency,electric power generation and flue gas outlet temperature as a function of seven input parameters.The ANN is trained with a two-year long database,with training errors of 0.2015 and 0.2741(mean absolute and square error)and validation errors of 0.32%and 2.350(mean percent and square error).That ANN model is explored by means of a combination of situations proposed by a Design of Experiment-DoE approach.All seven controlled parameters showed to be relevant to express both steam generator efficiency and electric power generation,while primary air flow rate and speed of the dynamic classifier can be neglected to calculate flue gas temperature as they are not statistically significant.DoE also shows the prominence of the primary air pressure in respect to the steam generator efficiency,electric power generation and the coal mass flow rate for the calculation of the flue gas outlet temperature.The ANN and DoE combined methodology shows to be promising to enhance complex system efficiency and helpful whenever a biased behavior must be brought back to stable operation. | Lara Werncke Vieira Augusto Delavald Marques Paulo Smith Schneider Antônio Joseda Silva Neto Felipe Antonio Chegury Viana Madhat Abdel-jawad Julian David Hunt Julio Cezar Mairesse Siluk | 2021 | Energy and AI2021,3,1: | 0 |

Of the papers presented at the conference a selection are included in this special issue of Journal of Environmental Science, which also reflects the conclusions of the Paris Climate meeting in Dec 2015, when the major nations of the world agreed about the compelling need to reduce the upward trend of adverse impacts associated with global climate change.
