| 1 | Nanomaterial-based biosorbents:Adsorbent for efficient removal of selected organic pollutants from industrial wastewater显示文摘The contamination of the environment by organic pollutants is a major risk factor,particularly for developing countries.Selected organic pollutants(SOPs)like the phenolic compounds,polyaromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs),pesticides,and herbicides pose serious environmental and health issues owing to their toxic characteristics and poor degradability.Apart from their potential mutagenicity,carcinogenicity,tetragenicity and high body accumulation,these pollutants have become an increase concern worldwide.Biosorption is a promising alternative strategy for removing organic pollutants during water purification processes.Biosorbents have several advantages such as simplicity of operation,good sorption capacity,high recoverability and modifiability.As a result,the focus and novelty of this review is on recent trends in the use of biosorbents,with a particular emphasis on the removal of SOPs from wastewater.It also cover use of bacteria biosorbents,fungal,algae and chitosan/chitin biosorbents.Apart from that,we have also reviewed various classes of SOPs,their levels in the environment,classification and available characteristics techniques suitable for the adsorption experiments of these nanocomposites materials.In addition,we have provided comprehensive explanations and conclusions on possible future application of biosorbents and the mechanism of adsorption of these materials for removal of these SOPs from wastewater during water purification processes. | Hussein.K.Okoro Sadanand Pandey Clement O.Ogunkunle Catherine J.Ngila C.Zvinowanda Ismaila Jimoh Isiaka A.Lawal Muyiwa M.Orosun Adewale George Adeniyi | 2022 | Emerging Contaminants2022,8,1: | 2 |
| 2 | Abortifacient Potential of Aqueous Extract of Senna alata Leaves in Rats显示文摘Objective To study the abortifacient activity of aqueous extract of Senna alata leaves in female Wistar rats.Methods Pregnant rats weighing 143.65 ± 13.11 g were completely randomized into 5 groups(A-E).Rats in group A(negative control) were orally administered,once daily with 0.5 ml of distilled water on days 10-18 post-coitum while those in groups B,C,D,and E were treated exactly like the negative control except they received the same volume containing 2.85 mg/kg body weight of mifepristone(group B,reference drug),250,500 and 1 000 mg/kg body weight of the extract respectively(groups C-E).Results Phytochemical screening of the extract showed positive results for saponins(1.22%),flavonoids(1.06%),cardiac glycosides(0.20%),cardenolides and dienolides(0.18%),phenolics(0.44%) and alkaloids(0.52%).Respiratory distress,salivation,diarrhoea,changes in the appearance of hair as well as maternal mortality were not observed at any time during the exposure period except in the mifepristone-treated animals where there was episode of diarrhoea and tiredness.The extract significantly reduced(P<0.05) the number of life foetus,weight and survival ratio of the foetus,numbers of implantations and Corpora lutea,implantation index,progesterone,prolactin,estradiol,follicle stimulating and luteinizing hormones whereas the number of dead foetus,number and percentage of rats that aborted,percentage vaginal opening,resorption index,pre-and post-implantation losses increased significantly.In addition,mifepristone-treated animals produced resorption index that compared well with the distilled water control.There was also no dead or life foetus and serum progesterone concentration was increased in the animals treated with mifepristone.All cases of abortion were accompanied with vaginal bleeding.Although,the final weight of the rats increased significantly,the feed and water intake were not significantly altered in all the treatment groups.The weight of the uterus,uterine-body weight ratio,length of the right uterus horn and uterine cholesterol decreased significantly in all the treatment groups.The uterine alkaline phosphatase activity and glucose concentration increased in only the extract-treated animals whereas mifepristone decreased the uterine alkaline phosphatase activity and glucose content of the animals.Conclusion This study has provided evidence to the age-long claim of S.alata leaves in 'washing the uterus'.The abortifacient properties were most pronounced at 500 and 1 000 mg/kg body weight of the extract and were similar to the animals treated with 2.85 mg/kg body weight of mifepristone.Hormonal influence,changes in implantation site,estrogenicity and uterogenicity are suggested as possible mechanism of abortifacient activity of aqueous extract of S.alata leaves.Overall,the extract may be used as an abortifacient especially at 500 and 1 000 mg/kg body weight and therefore not safe for consumption as oral remedy during pregnancy. | Yakubu MT Adeshina AO Oladiji AT Akanji MA Oloyede OB Jimoh GA Olatinwo AWO Afolayan AJ | 2010 | Journal of Reproduction and Contraception2010,21,3: | 2 |

| 6 | Population distribution and threats to sustainable management of selected non-timber forest products in tropical lowland rainforests of south western Nigeria显示文摘Uncontrolled harvesting of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) poses a serious risk of extermination to several of these species in Nigeria. Yet, there is a paucity of information on the distribution, population status and sustainable management of NTFPs in most of the tropical lowland rainforests. We, therefore, assessed the population, distribution and threats to sustainable management of NTFPs within the tropical lowland rainforests of Omo and Shasha Forest Reserves, south western Nigeria. Data were obtained through inventory surveys on five top priority species including: bush mango (Irvingia gabonensis (Aubry-Lecomte ex O'Rorke) Baill), African walnut (Tetracarpidium conophorum (Mull. Arg.) Hutch. & Dalziel syn. Plukenetia conophora), chew-stick (Massularia acuminata (G. Don) Bullock), fever bark (Annickia chlorantha Setten & P.J.Maas syn. Enantia chloranta) and bush pepper (Piper guineense Schumach. & Thonn.). Purposive and stratified random sampling techniques were used for the inventory. Each forest reserve was stratified into three, viz: less disturbed natural forest (for areas that have been rested for at least ten years), recently disturbed natural forest (for areas that have suffered one form of human perturba- tion or the other in the last five years), and plantation forest (for areas carrying forest plantation). Data were collected from eighteen 10m×500m belt transects located in the above strata. The species were gener- ally fewer in both plantation and recently disturbed natural forest than the less disturbed natural forest, suggesting that forest disturbances (habitat modification) for other uses may have an effect on the occurrence and densities of the NTFPs. Exceptions to this trend were found for P. guineense and T. conophorum, which were fairly common in both planta-tion and recently disturbed natural forest. Among three tree NTFP species (i.e. I. gabonensis, M. acuminata and A. chlorantha), only I. gabonensis showed a significant difference in overall DBH size classes for both reserves (t=-2.404; df =21; p=0.026). Three tree NTFP species in both reserves further showed differences from the regular patterns of distribution of trees. The fairly regular reverse J-shaped size class distribution observed for M. acuminata in the study sites, however, suggests a recuperating population. In general, destructive harvesting of species, logging operations, low population size, narrow distribution ranges and habitat degradation are the major threats to the population of NTFPs in the study area. The implications of our findings for sustainable management of NTFPs in the study area are discussed and recommendations are made for a feasible approach towards enhancing the status of the species. | Jimoh S.O. | 11 | Farmers’perceptions on cultivation and the impacts of climate change on goods and services provided by Garcinia kola in Nigeria显示文摘Background:Garcinia kola is an indigenous multipurpose tree species commonly found in the tropical rain forest zone of West and Central Africa.Providing economic,ecological,and socio-cultural benefits for people,they have potentials to improve the regional and local income generation to the farmers but the cultivation of the species is very limited in Nigeria.Methods:The study investigated cultivation and farmers’perceptions on the impacts of climate change on goods and services provided by G.kola in Nigeria.Structured questioners and interviews were used.The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistic such as frequency,percentage,chi-square,and multinomial logit regressions with SPSS Version 20 and R software Version 3.1.0.Results:The results show that farmers are presently not cultivating G.kola,and most of the available stands were inherited from grandparents.The farmers still believe it is only God that can make G.kola to germinate;however,information about the new improved methods of raising G.kola was not spread across farmers’communities.Over 93%of these farmers were not aware of these new methods,and the only means they raise the species is by picking the wildlings that regenerate naturally close to mother tree and are rarely found.The finding also shows that farmers are well aware of climate change and its impact on crop productivity is not clear to them.The result shows that five explanatory variables(age,gender,marital status,education level,household size and primary occupation)are the main factors significantly influencing farmers’perception of climate change and the cultivation of the G.kola.During interview section,the farmers reported variability of Harmattan season influences fruit production of the species;according to them,increase in Harmattan season usually leads to increase in fruiting of G.kola.Conclusions:Based on our findings,all the 215 respondent interviewed agree that climatic variability influences the availability of G.kola which will in turn have significant effects on the goods and services provided to the people.Efforts should be made at educating the rural farmers on propagation possibilities,potential ecosystem services,and the impact of climate change on multiple-purpose agroforestry species. | Onyebuchi Patrick Agwu Adama Bakayoko Saka Oladunni Jimoh Porembski Stefan | 2018 | Ecological Processes2018,7,1: | 1 |
