| 2 | Tandem running by foraging Pachycondyla striata workers in field conditions vary in response to food type,food distance,and environmental conditions显示文摘Ants show collective and individual behavioral flexibility in their response to immediate context,choosing for example between different foraging strategies.In Pachycondyla striata,workers can forage solitarily or recruit and guide nestmates to larger food sources through tandem running.Although considered more ancestral and less efficient than pheromone trail-laying,this strategy is common especially in species with small colony size.What is not known is how the decision to recruit or follow varies according to the immediate context.That is,how fine adjustments in information transfer affect immediate foraging decisions at the colony level.Here,we studied individually marked workers and evaluated their foraging decisions when food items varied in nature(protein versus carbohydrate),size,and distance from the nest at different temperatures and humidity levels.Our results show that tandem run leaders and potential followers adjust their behavior according to a combination of external factors.While 84.2%of trips were solitary,most ants(81%)performed at least 1 tandem run.However,tandem runs were more frequent for nearby resources and at higher relative humidity.Interestingly,when food items were located far away,tandem runs were more successful when heading to protein sources(75%)compared with carbohydrate sources(42%).Our results suggest that the social information transfer between leaders and followers conveys more information than previously thought,and also relies on their experience and motivation. | Janiele Pereira SILVA Lohan VALADARES Maria Eduarda Lima VIEIRA Serafino TESEO Nicolas CHALINE | 2021 | Current Zoology2021,67,5: | 1 |
| 3 | High-throughput phenotyping of two plant-size traits of Eucalyptus species using neural networks显示文摘In forest modeling to estimate the volume of wood,artificial intelligence has been shown to be quite effi-cient,especially using artificial neural networks(ANNs).Here we tested whether diameter at breast height(DBH)and the total plant height(Ht)of eucalyptus can be pre-dicted at the stand level using spectral bands measured by an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)multispectral sensor and vegetation indices.To do so,using the data obtained by the UAV as input variables,we tested different configurations(number of hidden layers and number of neurons in each layer)of ANNs for predicting DBH and Ht at stand level for different Eucalyptus species.The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replicates,with 20 trees in each experimental plot.The treatments comprised five Eucalyptus species(E.camaldulensis,E.uroplylla,E.saligna,E.gran-dis,and E.urograndis)and Corymbria citriodora.DBH and Ht for each plot at the stand level were measured seven times in separate overflights by the UAV,so that the multispectral sensor could obtain spectral bands to calculate vegetation indices(VIs).ANNs were then constructed using spectral bands and VIs as input layers,in addition to the categorical variable (species), to predict DBH and Ht at the stand level simultaneously. This report represents one of the first appli-cations of high-throughput phenotyping for plant size traits in Eucalyptus species. In general, ANNs containing three hidden layers gave better statistical performance (higher esti-mated r, lower estimated root mean squared error-RMSE) due to their greater capacity for self-learning. Among these ANNs, the best contained eight neurons in the first layer, seven in the second, and five in the third (8 − 7 − 5). | 6 | A phaseⅡprospective trial of photobiomodulation therapy in limiting oral mucositis in the treatment of locally advanced head and neck cancer patients显示文摘Objective:This study aimed to compare the historical incidence rate of severe oral mucositis(OM)in head and neck cancer patients undergoing definitive concurrent chemoradiation therapy(CRT)versus a prospective cohort of patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC)treated with prophylactic photobiomodulation therapy(PBMT).Methods:This US-based,institutional,single-arm,phaseⅡprospective clinical trial was initiated in 50 patients(age≥18 years,Karnofsky Performance Scale Index>60,with locally advanced HNSCC(excluding oral cavity)receiving definitive or adjuvant radiation therapy(RT)with concurrent platinum-based chemotherapy(CT).PBMT was delivered three times per week throughout RT utilizing both an intraoral as well extraoral delivery system.Primary outcome measure was incidence of severe OM utilizing both the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria,version 4.0(NCI-CTCAE)Grade≥3 and the World Health Organization Mucositis Grading Scale(WHO)Grade≥3 versus historical controls;secondary outcome measures included time to onset of severe OM following therapy initiation.Results:At baseline,all patients included in final analysis(N=47)had OM Grade 0.Average RT and CT dose was(66.3±5.1)Gy and(486.1±106.8)mg/m ^(2),respectively.Severe OM was observed in 11 of 47 patients(23%,confidence interval:12,38).OM toxicity grade trended upward during treatment,reaching a maximum at 7 weeks(WHO:1.8 vs.NCI-CTCAE:1.7).Subsequently,OM grade returned to baseline 3 months following completion of RT.The mean time to onset of severe OM was(35±12)days.The mean time to resolution of severe OM was(37±37)days.Conclusions:Compared to historical outcomes,PBMT aides in decreasing severe OM in patients with locally advanced HNSCC.PBMT represents a minimally invasive,prophylactic intervention to decrease OM as a major treatment-related side effect. | Janielle K.-A.Taylor Leila J.Mady Khalil Baddour Uzoma K.Iheagwara Shuyan Zhai James P.Ohr Daniel P.Zandber Vikram C.Gorantla Robert L.Ferris Seungwon Kim Umamaheswar Duvvuri Mark W.Kubik Shaum Sridharan Jonas T.Johnson Karen D.Holeva Annette E.Quinn David A.Clump | 2022 | World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery2022,8,4: | 0 |
