| 2 | Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate reduces ischemia-reperfusion injury of the small intestine显示文摘AIM: To evaluate whether pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), an enhancer of HO production, attenuates intestinal IR injury.METHODS: Eighteen male rats were randomly allocated into three groups: (a) sham; (b) IR, consisting of 30 min of intestinal ischemia, followed by 2-h period of reperfusion; and (c) PDTC treatment before IR. Intestinal microvascular perfusion (IMP) was monitored continuously by laser Doppler fiowmetry. At the end of the reperfusion, serum samples for lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels and biopsies of ileum were obtained. HO activity in the ileum was assessed at the end of the reperfusion period.RESULTS: At the end of the reperfusion in the IR group,IMP recovered partially to 42.5% of baseline (P<0.05vs sham), whereas PDTC improved IMP to 67.3% of baseline (P<0.01 vs IR). There was a twofold increase in HO activity in PDTC group (2 062.66±106.11) as compared to IR (842.3±85.12) (P<0.001). LDH was significantly reduced (P<0.001) in PDTC group (585.6±102.4)as compared to IR group (1 973.8±306.5). Histological examination showed that the ileal mucosa was significantly less injured in PDTC group as compared with IR group.CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that PDTC improves the IMP and attenuates IR injury of the intestine possibly via HO production. | 3 | Involvement and therapeutic implications of airway epithelial barrier dysfunction in type 2 inflammation of asthma显示文摘Type 2 inflammation is a complex immune response and primary mechanism for several common allergic diseases including allergic rhinitis,allergic asthma,atopic dermatitis,and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.It is the predominant type of immune response against helminths to prevent their tissue infiltration and induce their expulsion.Recent studies suggest that epithelial barrier dysfunction contributes to the development of type 2 inflammation in asthma,which may partly explain the increasing prevalence of asthma in China and around the globe.The epithelial barrier hypothesis has recently been proposed and has received great interest from the scientific community.The development of leaky epithelial barriers leads to microbial dysbiosis and the translocation of bacteria to inter-and sub-epithelial areas and the development of epithelial tissue inflammation.Accordingly,preventing the impairment and promoting the restoration of a deteriorated airway epithelial barrier represents a promising strategy for the treatment of asthma.This review introduces the interaction between type 2 inflammation and the airway epithelial barrier in asthma,the structure and molecular composition of the airway epithelial barrier,and the assessment of epithelial barrier integrity.The role of airway epithelial barrier disruption in the pathogenesis of asthma will be discussed.In addition,the possible mechanisms underlying the airway epithelial barrier dysfunction induced by allergens and environmental pollutants,and current treatments to restore the airway epithelial barrier are reviewed. | Xiang Dong Mei Ding Jinjin Zhang Ismail Ogülür Yagiz Pat Mübeccel Akdis Yadong Gao Cezmi A.Akdis | 2022 | Chinese Medical Journal2022,,5: | 4 |
| 4 | Role of the CXCR4-SDF1-HMGB1 pathway in the directional migration of cells and regeneration of affected organs显示文摘In recent years,several studies have reported positive outcomes of cell-based therapies despite insufficient engraftment of transplanted cells.These findings have created a huge interest in the regenerative potential of paracrine factors released from transplanted stem or progenitor cells.Interestingly,this notion has also led scientists to question the role of proteins in the secretome produced by cells,tissues or organisms under certain conditions or at a particular time of regenerative therapy.Further studies have revealed that the secretomes derived from different cell types contain paracrine factors that could help to prevent apoptosis and induce proliferation of cells residing within the tissues of affected organs.This could also facilitate the migration of immune,progenitor and stem cells within the body to the site of inflammation.Of these different paracrine factors present within the secretome,researchers have given proper consideration to stromal cell-derived factor-1(SDF1)that plays a vital role in tissue-specific migration of the cells needed for regeneration.Recently researchers recognized that SDF1 could facilitate site-specific migration of cells by regulating SDF1-CXCR4 and/or HMGB1-SDF1-CXCR4 pathways which is vital for tissue regeneration.Hence in this study,we have attempted to describe the role of different types of cells within the body in facilitating regeneration while emphasizing the HMGB1-SDF1-CXCR4 pathway that orchestrates the migration of cells to the site where regeneration is needed. | Nazmul Haque Ismail M Fareez Liew Fong Fong Chanchal Mandal Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim Kranthi RajaKacharaju Pratiwi Soesilawati | 2020 | World Journal of Stem Cells2020,12,9: | 3 |
| 5 | Responses of Contrasting Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Genotypes to Salt Stress as Affected by Nutrient Concentrations显示文摘The study was conducted to investigate the effects of applying different concentrations of the macronutrients K+,Ca2+,and Mg2+ on the responses of contrasting rice(Oryza sativa L.) genotypes under salt stress.A solution culture experiment was conducted in a phytotron at the International Rice Research Institute(IRRI),under controlled temperature and humidity and natural sunlight.When subjected to salt stress of 100 mmol L-1 using NaCl,the salt tolerant genotypes FL478 and IR651,accumulated less Na+ and maintained lower ratios of Na+/K+,Na+/Ca2+,and Na+/Mg2+ than the sensitive genotypes IR29 and Azucena.These tolerant genotypes also had higher concentrations of K+ in their shoots and greater root and shoot biomass and green leaf area.Tolerant genotypes also maintained much lower concentration of Na+ and lower and more favorable ratios of Na+/K+,Na+/Ca2+,and Na+/Mg2+ in their active and developing tissues.Salt tolerance and shoot and root growth of both tolerant and sensitive genotypes were enhanced considerably when higher concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+ were applied in culture solution.The concentration of Na+ and the ratios of Na+/K+,Na+/Ca2+,and Na+/Mg2+ in shoots also declined significantly.The beneficial effects of higher calcium were greater than that of magnesium and application of higher concentration of K+ seems to have minor effects.Responses to salinity in rice can therefore be considerably enhanced through proper nutrient management,by increasing the concentrations of nutrient elements that have favorable effects such as Ca2+ and Mg2+.Calcium is particularly more effective than both magnesium and potassium,and can be applied at relatively larger quantities in salt affected soils. | ZHANG Zhen-hua LIU Qiang SONG Hai-xing RONG Xiang-min Abdelbagi M Ismail | 2011 | Agricultural Sciences in China2011,10,2: | 3 |

| 8 | Performance and yield stability of maize hybrids in stress-prone environments in eastern Africa显示文摘Identification and deployment of high-yielding and stress-tolerant maize hybrids adapted to stress-prone agro-ecologies is important for improving the food security and livelihoods of smallholder farmers in eastern Africa.The objectives of this study were to(i)assess the performance of maize hybrids under well-watered and drought stress conditions;(ii)evaluate grain yield stability of 65 intermediate-maturing and 55 early-maturing hybrids in 24 well-watered locations and seven drought stress locations;and(iii)identify representative and/or discriminative testing locations for increasing genetic gains for the target traits.There were significant differences for grain yield among early-and intermediatematuring hybrids tested under well-watered and drought stress environments.Among the early-maturing hybrids,the top 10 hybrids produced 46.8%–73.9%and 31.2%–42.1%higher mean grain yields than the best commercial check under drought and well-watered conditions,respectively.Among the intermediate-maturing hybrids,the top 10 hybrids produced 25.2%–47.7%and 8.5%–13.5%higher grain yield than commercial checks under drought stress and well-watered conditions,respectively,suggesting improvement in the levels of drought tolerance in both early-and intermediate-maturing hybrids.GGE biplot analysis and a bi-segmented regression linear method identified specific early-maturing and intermediate-maturing hybrids that performed well under both well-watered and drought stress conditions.These hybrids could be recommended for commercial production in eastern Africa.Kakamega in Kenya was found to be the most representative and highly discriminating site among well-watered testing locations,while Kabuku in Tanzania was the least representative of test locations.For testing under drought stress conditions,Kiboko in Kenya was identified as the most representative location.This information could be useful for allocating resources and streamlining CIMMYT maize hybrid testing in eastern Africa. | Wender Santos Rezende Yoseph Beyene Stephen Mugo Eric Ndou Manje Gowda Julius Pyton Sserumaga Godfrey Asea Ismail Ngolinda McDonald Jumbo Sylvester O.Oikeh Michael Olsen Aluízio Borém Cosme Damião Cruz Boddupalli M.Prasanna | 2020 | The Crop Journal2020,8,1: | 2 |
