| 1 | Fabrication and characterization of affordable hydrophobic ceramic hollow fibre membrane for contacting processes显示文摘Affordable hydrophobic hollow fibre membranes were prepared using kaolin and alumina based ceramic powders via a combined phase inversion and sintering technique,followed by a grafting with fluoroalkylsilane(FAS).The crux of the matter in this paper is to study the changes in the properties of the hollow fibre membranes(gas permeation,mechanical strength,pore size,porosity,tortuosity,morphology,and contact angle)by the addition of alumina(Al2O3)to the pure kaolin with mono or multiparticle sizes.By varying the overall loading and particle size of alumina addition,different morphologies of the membranes were obtained due to the differences in the path lengths during phase inversion process for each solvent and nonsolvent exchange.The successful grafting with FAS was evidenced by the increase in contact angle from nearly equal to zero degree before grafting to 140°after grafting.Kaolin-alumina-4,one of the hollow fibres fabricated in this work,achieved a mean pore size of 0.25μm with the bending strength of 96.4 MPa and high nitrogen permeance of 2.3×10^(-5) mol·m^(-2)·Pa^(-1)·s^(-1),which makes the hollow fibre most suitable for the membrane contactor application. | Mohammed Abdulmunem ABDULHAMEED Mohd Hafiz Dzarfan OTHMAN Haider Nadhom Azziz Al JODA Ahmad Fauzi ISMAIL Takeshi MATSUURA Zawati HARUN Mukhlis A.RAHMAN Mohd Hafiz PUTEH Juhana JAAFAR | 2017 | Journal of Advanced Ceramics2017，6，4： | 3 |
| 2 | Pancreatic pseudocyst or a cystic tumor of the pancreas?显示文摘Pancreatic pseudocysts are the most common cystic lesions of the pancreas and may complicate acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, or pancreatic trauma. While the majority of acute pseudocysts resolve spontaneously, few may require drainage. On the other hand, pancreatic cystic tumors, which usually require extirpation, may disguise as pseudocysts. Hence, the distinction between the two entities is crucial for a successful outcome. We conducted this study to highlight the fundamental differences between pancreatic pseudocysts and cystic tumors so that relevant management plans can be devised. We reviewed the data of patients with pancreatic cystic lesions that underwent intervention between June 2007 and December 2010 in our hospital. We identified 9 patients(5 males and 4 females) with a median age of 40 years(range, 30–70 years). Five patients had pseudocysts, 2 had cystic tumors, and 2 had diseases of undetermined pathology. Pancreatic pseudocysts were treated by pseudocystogastrostomy in 2 cases and percutaneous drainage in 3 cases. One case recurred after percutaneous drainage and required pseudocystogastrostomy. The true pancreatic cysts were serous cystadenoma, which was treated by distal pancreatectomy, and mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, which was initially treated by drainage, like a pseudocyst, and then by distal pancreatectomy when its true nature was revealed. We conclude that every effort should be exerted to distinguish between pancreatic pseudocysts and cystic tumors of the pancreas to avoid the serious misjudgement of draining rather than extirpating a pancreatic cystic tumor. | 10 | Ferrara ring segments implantation for treating keratoconus显示文摘AIM: To investigate the efficacy of Ferrara rings (FR) implantation in the treatment of keratoconus.METHODS: It was a retrospective case series descriptive study. The sample was comprised of 50 patients 79 eyes diagnosed with progressive keratoconus. This included 24 (48%) males and 26 (52%) females between the age of 13 and 44 years. All participants underwent surgical implantation of FR in the period between January 2009 and September 2010 at Jordan University Hospital. Thorough ophthalmologic examinations were applied to measure vital variables for each pathological condition before and after surgery. RESULTS: Findings indicated an overall significant postoperative improvement in both uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best spectacle corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) throughout follow up visits. Moreover, results illustrated a significant decrease in spherical equivalent (SE) and keratometric readings (lower, higher and the average). CONCLUSION: Surgical intervention strategies are being frequently developed to meet the needs of patients with keratoconus. The implantation of Ferrara rings has proven to be a safe and feasible alternative procedure for the treatment of mild-moderate keratoconus especially for patients with contact lenses intolerance. We have found that this procedure has improved visual outcomes in all eyes studied.
