1Generating optical orbital angular momentum at visible wavelengths using a plasmonic metasurface显示文摘Light beams with a helical phase-front possess orbital angular momentum along their direction of propagation in addition to the spin angular momentum that describes their polarisation.Until recently,it was thought that these two‘rotational’motions of light were largely independent and could not be coupled during light–matter interactions.However,it is now known that interactions with carefully designed complex media can result in spin-to-orbit coupling,where a change of the spin angular momentum will modify the orbital angular momentum and vice versa.In this work,we propose and demonstrate that the birefringence of plasmonic nanostructures can be wielded to transform circularly polarised light into light carrying orbital angular momentum.A device operating at visible wavelengths is designed from a space-variant array of subwavelength plasmonic nano-antennas.Experiment confirms that circularly polarised light transmitted through the device is imbued with orbital angular momentum of 62'(with conversion efficiency of at least 1%).This technology paves the way towards ultrathin orbital angular momentum generators that could be integrated into applications for spectroscopy,nanoscale sensing and classical or quantum communications using integrated photonic devices.Ebrahim Karimi Sebastian A Schulz Israel De Leon Hammam Qassim Jeremy Upham Robert W Boyd 2014Light(Science & Applications)2014,3,1:39
2Role of quorum sensing in bacterial infections显示文摘Quorum sensing(QS) is cell communication that is widely used by bacterial pathogens to coordinate the expression of several collective traits, including the production of multiple virulence factors, biofilm formation, and swarming motility once a population threshold is reached. Several lines of evidence indicate that QS enhances virulence of bacterial pathogens in animal models as well as in human infections; however, its relative importance for bacterial pathogenesis is still incomplete. In this review, we discuss the present evidence from in vitro and in vivo experiments in animal models, as well as from clinical studies, that link QS systems with human infections. We focus on two major QS bacterial models, the opportunistic Gram negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus, which are also two of the main agents responsible of nosocomial and wound infections. 3Differential diagnosis and management of liver tumors in infants显示文摘During the first year of life, most of the liver neoplasms are benign in origin, but some of these histologically benign lesions may be challenging in their management. Although most hepatic hemangiomas can be safely observed until involution is documented, some patients will need treatment due to progressive hepatomegaly, hypothyroidism and/or cardiac failure. Large mesenchymal hamartomas may require extensive hepatic resection and an appropriate surgical plan is critical to obtain good results. For malignant neoplasms such as hepatoblastoma, complete surgical resection is the mainstay of curative therapy. The decision about whether to perform an upfront or delayed resection of a primary liver malignant tumor is based on many considerations, including the ease of resection, surgical expertise, tumor histology and stage, and the likely chemosensitivity of the tumor. 4Utility of magnetic resonance imaging in anorectal disease显示文摘Imaging of both benign and malignant anorectal diseases has traditionally posed a challenge to clinicians, and as a result history and physical exam have been relied on heavily. CT scanning and endorectal ultrasound have become popular in assessment of anatomy and staging of tumors, but have limitations. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has the capability to fill in the gaps left open by more conventional imaging modalities and continues to be promising as the definitive imaging technique in the pelvis, especially with advancement of emerging technologies in this field. A comprehensive review of this topic has been undertaken. Anorectal disease is divided into three broad categories: cancer, fistula/abscess, and pelvic floor disorders. A review of the literature is performed to evaluate the use of MRI and other imaging modalities in these three areas. Preoperative imaging is useful in the evaluation of all three areas of anorectal disease. MRI is an effective tool in delineating anatomy and, when correlating with the specific clinical scenario, is an effective adjunct in clinical decision-making in order to optimize outcome. MRI continues to be a promising and novel approach to imaging various afflictions of the anorectum and the pelvic floor. Its role is more well-established in some areas than in others, and there are still signif icant limitations. 5Hepatopulmonary syndrome: What we know and what we would like to know显示文摘Hepatopulmonary syndrome(HPS) is characterized by abnormalities in blood oxygenation caused by the presence of intrapulmonary vascular dilations(IPVD) in the context of liver disease, generally at a cirrhotic stage. Knowledge about the subject is still only partial. The majority of the information about the etiopathogenesis of HPS has been obtained through experiments on animals. Reported prevalence in patients who are candidates for a liver transplantation(LT) varies between 4% and 32%, with a predominance of mild or moderate cases. Although it is generally asymptomatic it does have an impact on their quality of life and survival. The diagnosis requires taking an arterial blood gas sample of a seated patient with alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient(AaO 2) ≥ 15 mm Hg, or ≥ 20 mm Hg in those over 64 years of age. The IPVD are identified through a transthoracic contrast echocardiography or a macroaggregated albumin lung perfusion scan(99mTc-MAA). There is currently no effective medical treatment. LT has been shown to reverse the syndrome and improve survival rates, even in severe cases. Therefore the policy of prioritizing LT would appear to increase survival rates. 7土生空团菌对白云母的风化作用及解钾特性显示文摘【目的】为了提高森林土壤含钾硅酸盐矿物利用率和改善树木钾素营养,探讨外生菌根真菌对白云母矿物的解钾及风化效应。【方法】通过5种外生菌根真菌在贫钾条件下与白云母的相互作用,考察了3种常用培养基对菌株解钾能力的影响;采用解钾效果最高的土生空团菌在Modified Melin-Norkrans(MMN)培养基条件下,进一步研究了21d浸出过程中主要矿质元素的释放量、生物量、剩余葡萄糖量、产生的小分子有机酸种类及含量、菌丝-矿物微环境的改变,利用扫描电子显微镜观测白云母被风化的痕迹。【结果】培养基对不同外生菌根真菌解钾能力的影响各异,其中土生空团菌在MMN培养基条件下解钾能力最强,其解钾量与生物量、剩余葡萄糖量、pH值显著相关。土生空团菌能够分泌有助于菌丝-矿物粘附的胞外多糖以形成菌丝-矿物微环境,并富集有机酸,促进微环境内钾的释放;菌丝不仅能够粘附在白云母表面产生刻蚀作用,还能破坏矿物深入其内部。【结论】外生菌根真菌具有促进白云母风化并释放钾素的能力,这种能力可能与菌丝、有机酸、多糖的协同作用有关。彭云湘 宋淼 Israel Pedruzzi 李平 于建国 2015微生物学报2015,55,3:8
8Development of an Arabic version of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire as a tool to study eye diseases patients in Egypt显示文摘AIM:To develop and test an Arabic version of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25(NEI-VFQ-25).METHODS:NEI-VFQ-25 was translated into Arabic according to WHO translation guidelines. We enrolled adult consenting patients with bilateral chronic eye diseases who presented to 14 hospitals across Egypt from October to December 2012, and documented their clinical findings. Psychometric properties were then tested using STATA.RESULTS:We recruited 379 patients, whose mean age was(54.5±15)y. Of 46.2% were males, 227 had cataract,31 had glaucoma, 23 had retinal detachment, 37 had diabetic retinopathy, and 61 had miscellaneous visual defects. Non-response rate and the floor and ceiling numbers of the Arabic version(ARB-VFQ-25) were calculated. Internal consistency was high in all subscales(except general health), with Cronbach-α ranging from0.702-0.911. Test-retest reliability was high(intraclass correlation coefficient 0.79).CONCLUSION:RB-VFQ-25 isareliableandvalidtool for assessing visual functions of Arabic speaking patients. However, some questions had high non-response rates and should be substituted by available alternatives. 9关节镜手术和非手术治疗在处理颞下颌关节病患者中的关系(英文)显示文摘作者结合文献复习和临床经验,全面论述了非手术治疗和关节镜手术在处理常见颞下颌关节病变中的价值,其主要观点是:非手术治疗和手术治疗并非互相排斥,而是相辅相成。非手术治疗适用于病变较轻者,而且是手术治疗患者手术前后的必要辅助治疗。目前对颞下颌关节病变的认识,不支持对病变的关节盘进行复位或替代;关节盘复位术总体上是失败的,因为不改变关节盘的位置,患者的症状也会得到显著改善。而通过关节盘复位术改变关节的解剖结构,对引起患者疼痛和功能紊乱的生物化学和生物机械过程的作用不大。过去15年间积累的临床、影像学和滑液分析资料足以证明,内紊乱理论存在很大缺陷,然而遗憾的是,迄今临床医生仍在强调内紊乱和关节盘复位的重要性。对颞下颌关节病变的成功处理,必须基于治疗内在的生物化学改变和组织异常。正常的滑膜和软骨组织具有很强的耐受机械负荷的适应能力,以维持组织的完整性。当关节所承受的慢性负荷超过组织的耐受力时,就会出现关节疼痛、运动受限和关节杂音。在这一过程的早期,旨在减轻关节负荷、缓解炎症和增加运动的非手术干预,加上组织本身的自然愈合能力,完全能够使组织的结构和功能恢复正常。如引起过度负荷和运动受限的病因持续存在,则病变加重,必须进行手术干预。非手术治疗的原则和目的是:减轻关节负荷,通过被动开口锻炼增加而不是限制关节运动,采用非类固醇类消炎药物如芬必得和奈普生缓解炎症和疼痛,改善患者睡眠(必要时辅以药物如benzodiazepine)。由滑膜炎、骨关节炎和黏连导致的颞下颌关节疾病的手术治疗适应证为:(1)严重疼痛和(或)功能障碍,(2)疼痛或功能紊乱系由关节内病变引起,(3)正规疗程的非手术治疗未能改善症状。手术原则是:(1)尽量微创,手术创伤越大,组织损伤和瘢痕形成的几率越大;(2)手术的目的是清除和(或)治疗已经存在的病变组织,如松解黏连,清除病变的骨关节纤维化组织;(3)辅助减轻滑膜炎症,如内镜下分离滑膜炎症组织,直视下注入高浓度的消炎药物;(4)尽量保留滑膜、关节软骨和关节盘,因为研究表明,保留穿孔的关节盘不会带来任何危害。Howard A. 10草酸青霉对含钾矿物风化及钾溶出的影响显示文摘【目的】探讨含钾硅酸盐矿物在草酸青霉(Penicillium oxalicum)作用下的风化及钾溶出情况。【方法】利用等离子体发射光谱、X-射线能谱、X-射线光电子能谱分析了3种常见含钾硅酸盐矿物(钾长石、白云母和黑云母)在草酸青霉作用后浸出液和矿物表面元素含量的变化;通过X-射线衍射分析矿物晶相结构的变化;采用共聚焦激光扫描显微镜表征了草酸青霉在矿物表面形成的生物膜;测量了培养液中不同碳源与氮源组分对草酸青霉解钾的影响。【结果】草酸青霉对结构稳定的钾长石和白云母风化速率较低,相比而言黑云母容易被风化并释放可溶性钾元素;草酸青霉在矿物表面形成了网状结构的生物膜,有利于微环境的生成及有机酸在其内的富集,促进微环境内钾的释放,强化微生物对矿物的风化作用;草酸青霉对多种碳源及氮源都表现出较好的适用性。【结论】草酸青霉是一种能够促进多种含钾矿物风化和钾溶出的真菌,在堆肥和生物肥料领域具有广泛的应用前景。宋淼 彭云湘 Pedruzzi Israel 李平 于建国 2015微生物学通报2015,42,7:6

14Cardiovascular drugs in the treatment of infantile hemangioma显示文摘Since the introduction of propranolol in the treatment of complicated infantile hemangiomas(IH) in 2008, other different beta-blockers, including timolol, acetabutolol, nadolol and atenolol, have been successfully used for the same purpose. Various hypotheses including vasoconstriction, inhibition of angiogenesis and the induction of apoptosis in proliferating endothelial cells have been advanced as the potential beta-blockerinduced effect on the accelerated IH involution, although the exact mechanism of action of beta-blockers remains unknown. This has generated an extraordinary interest in IH research and has led to the discovery of the role of the renin-angiotensin system(RAS) in the biology of IH, providing a plausible explanation for the beta-blocker induced effect on IH involution and the development of new potential indications for RAS drugs such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin-receptor blockers in the treatment of IH. 16Life after the birth of the mitochondrial Na^+/Ca^(2+) exchanger,NCLX显示文摘Powered by the mitochondrial membrane potential,Ca2+ permeates the mitochondria via a Ca2+ channel termed Ca2+ uniporter and is pumped out by a Na+/Ca2+ exchanger,both of which are located on the inner mitochondrial membrane.Mitochondrial Ca2+ transients are critical for metabolic activity and regulating global Ca2+ responses.On the other hand,failure to control mitochondrial Ca2+ is a hallmark of ischemic and neurodegenerative diseases.Despite their importance,identifying the uniporter and exchanger remains elusive and their inhibitors are non-specific.This review will focus on the mitochondrial exchanger,initially describing how it was molecularly identified and linked to a novel member of the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger superfamily termed NCLX.Molecular control of NCLX expression provides a selective tool to determine its physiological role in a variety of cell types.In lymphocytes,NCLX is essential for refilling the endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ stores required for antigen-dependent signaling.Communication of NCLX with the store-operated channel in astroglia controls Ca2+ influx and thereby neuro-transmitter release and cell proliferation.The refilling of the Ca2+ stores in the sarcoplasmic reticulum,which is controlled by NCLX,determines the frequency of action potential and Ca2+ transients in cardiomyocytes.NCLX is emerging as a hub for integrating glucose-dependent Na+ and Ca2+ signaling in pancreatic β cells,and the specific molecular control of NCLX expression resolved the controversy regarding its role in neurons and β cells.Future studies on an NCLX knockdown mouse model and identification of human NCLX mutations are expected to determine the role of mitochondrial Ca2+ efflux in organ activity and whether NCLX inactivation is linked to ischemic and/or neurodegenerative syndromes.Structure-function analysis and protein analysis will identify the NCLX mode of regulation and its partners in the inner membrane of the mitochondria.NITA Lulia I. 18Assessment of k–ε models using tetrahedral grids to describe the turbulent flow field of a PBT impeller and validation through the PIV technique显示文摘In turbulence modeling, the RNG and Realizable models have important improvements in the turbulent production and dissipation terms in comparison to the Standard. The selection of the appropriate turbulence model has an impact on the convergence and solution in STRs, and they are used in mixing, multiphase modeling or as starting solution of transient models as DES and LES. Although there are several studies with the pitched blade turbine(PBT) impeller, most of them used the Standard model as representative of all k–ε models, using structured hexahedral grids composed of low number of cells, and in some cases under axial symmetry assumptions.Accordingly, in this work the assessment of the Standard, RNG and Realizable models to describe the turbulent flow field of this impeller, using the Multiple Reference Frame(MRF) and Sliding Mesh(SM) approaches with tetrahedral domains in dense grids, is presented. This kind of cell elements is especially suitable to reproduce complex geometries. Flow velocities and turbulent parameters were verified experimentally by PIV and torque measurements. The three models were capable of predicting fairly the pumping number, the power number based on torque, and velocities. Although the RNG improved the predictions of the turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate, the Realizable model presented better performance for both approaches. All models failed in the prediction of the total dissipation rate, and a dependence of its value on the number of cells for the MRF was found.Victor X.
