Alopecia treatment using minimally manipulated human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells:Three case reports and review of literature显示文摘BACKGROUND Alopecia areata(AA)is a common autoimmune disease characterized by hair loss.AA appears in extensive forms, such as progressive and diffusing hair loss(diffuse AA),a total loss of scalp hair(alopecia totalis),and complete loss of hair over the entire body(alopecia universalis).Recently, mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)have been identified as a therapeutic alternative for autoimmune diseases. For this reason, preclinical and case studies of AA and related diseases using MSCs have been conducted.CASE SUMMARY Case 1:A 55-year-old woman suffered from AA in two areas of the scalp. She was given 15 rounds of minimally manipulated umbilical cord-MSCs(MM-UC-MSCs)over 6 mo.The AA gradually improved 3 mo after the first round. The patient was cured, and AA did not recur.Case 2:A 30-year-old woman, with history of local steroid hormone injections, suffered from AA in one area on the scalp. She was given two rounds of MM-UC-MSCs over 1 mo.The AA immediately improved after the first round. The patient was cured, and AA did not recur.Case 3:A 20-year-old woman, who was diagnosed with alopecia universalis at the age of 12,was given 14 rounds of MM-UC-MSCs over 12 mo.Her hair began to grow about 3 mo after the first round. The patient was cured, and alopecia universalis did not recur.CONCLUSION MM-UC-MSC transplantation potentially treats patients who suffer from AA and related diseases.Hyunjun Ahn Sang Yeon Lee Won Ju Jung Kye-Ho Lee 2021World Journal of Clinical Cases2021,9,15:4
Psoriasis treatment using minimally manipulated umbilical cordderived mesenchymal stem cells:A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that usually manifests as a red scaly epidermis, induration, and hyperproliferation of basal keratinocytes.About 2%of the world’s population suffers from psoriasis but there are no clear therapeutics yet.Recently, mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)have been regarded as a therapeutic alternative for autoimmune diseases,as they possess immunosuppressive effects without risks.Human umbilical cord-derived MSCs effectively regulate immune cells and are characterized by low immunogenicity, which has many advantages in treating immune diseases.CASE SUMMARY The patient was a 47-year-old male, diagnosed with psoriasis in 1995.He had received various treatments for 25 years, but the psoriatic condition was not significantly improved. He was given three rounds of minimally manipulated umbilical cord-derived MSCs over 2 wk.The erythema gradually disappeared.Three months after the 1st round, all erythema completely disappeared, and the psoriasis did not recur.CONCLUSION Minimally manipulated umbilical cord-derived MSC transplantation can potentially treat patients who suffer from psoriasis.Hyunjun Ahn Sang Yeon Lee Won-Ju Jung Jia Pi Kye-Ho Lee 2021World Journal of Clinical Cases2021,9,23:2
Treatment of acute ischemic stroke by minimally manipulated umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells transplantation:A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Stroke is one of the major causes of disability and death worldwide. Some treatments for stroke exist, but existing treatment methods have limitations such as difficulty in the regeneration of damaged neuronal cells of the brain.Recently, mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)have been studied as a therapeutic alternative for stroke, and various preclinical and case studies have been reported.CASE SUMMARY A 55-year-old man suffered an acute stroke, causing paralysis in the left upper and lower limbs. He intravenously transplanted the minimally manipulated human umbilical cord-derived MSCs(MM-UC-MSCs)twice with an 8-d interval. At 65 wk after transplantation, the patient returned to his previous occupation as a veterinarian with no adverse reactions.CONCLUSION MM-UC-MSCs transplantation potentially treats patients who suffer from acute ischemic stroke.Hyunjun Ahn Sang Yeon Lee Won Ju Jung Kye-Ho Lee 2021World Journal of Stem Cells2021,13,8:1

Flexible and disposable paper-based gas sensor using reduced graphene oxide/chitosan composite显示文摘Nitrogen dioxide(NO_(2))is a representative toxicant in air pollution that mostly arises from the exhaust gas released by automobiles. It is related to various respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and sudden infant death syndrome.Additionally, because the toxicity of nitrogen dioxide is high in overpopulated areas(i.e.,a capital or metropolis),the development of simple, practical, and facile sensors is highly needed. This work presents a flexible and disposable paper-based NO_(2)sensor based on a reduced graphene oxide/chitosan(r GO/CS)composite.The synthesized r GO/CS composite can be easily flexed and deformed into various shapes, which are attributed to chitosan molecules that function as a dispersion and reduction agent and support material. In addition, this composite can be attached to paper owing to its adhesive property;hence it can be utilized in versatile applications in a disposable manner.By analyzing the conductive change of the r GO/CS composite when it reacts with NO_(2),we can detect nitrogen dioxide in a concentration range of 0–100 ppm with a detection limit of 1 ppm. Moreover,we performed NO_(2)detection in the exhaust gas released by automobiles using the r GO/CS composite for practical application. The results indicated that the r GO/CS composite has the potential to be used in feasible gas sensing as a facile and disposable sensor under various conditions.Hyunjun Park Woong Kim Sang Won Lee Joohyung Park Gyudo Lee Dae Sung Yoon Wonseok Lee Jinsung Park 2022Journal of Materials Science & Technology2022,,6:1

Recovery from Bell’s palsy after treatment using uncultured umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells:A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Bell’s palsy is an idiopathic facial palsy with an unknown cause, and 75%of patients heal spontaneously. However, the other 25%of patients continue experiencing mild or severe disabilities, resulting in a reduced quality of life.Currently, various treatment methods have been developed to treat this disease. However, there is controversy regarding their effectiveness, and new alternative treatments are needed.CASE SUMMARY The patient suffered from left-sided facial paralysis due to Bell’s palsy for 7 years. The patient received an uncultured umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell transplant eight times for treatment. After follow-up for 32 mo,the paralysis was cured, and there was no recurrence.CONCLUSION Uncultured umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell transplantation may be a potential treatment for patients with Bell’s palsy who do not spontaneously recover.Hyunjun Ahn Won-Ju Jung Sang Yeon Lee Kye-Ho Lee 2023World Journal of Clinical Cases2023,11,12:0
A novel combined multi-battery dataset based approach for enhanced prediction accuracy of data driven prognostic models in capacity estimation of lithium ion batteries显示文摘To ensure smooth and reliable operations of battery systems, reliable prognosis with accurate prediction of State of Health of lithium ion batteries is of utmost importance. However, battery degradation is a complex challenge involving many electrochemical reactions at anode, separator, cathode and electrolyte/electrode interfaces. Also, there is significant effect of the operating conditions on the battery degradation.Various machine learning tech-niques have been applied to estimate the capacity and State of Health of lithium ion batteries to ensure reliable operation and timely maintenance. In this paper,we study the Gaussian Process Regression(GPR)and Support Vector Machine(SVM)model-based approaches in estimating the capacity and State of Health of batteries.Bat-tery capacity and State of Health estimations are carried out using GPR and SVM models and the predictions comparatively studied for accuracy based on RMSE values. The prediction accuracy is further compared with re-spect to single sensor and multi sensor data.Further,a combined multi battery data set model is used to improve the prediction accuracy.Combining the data of multiple batteries with similar operating conditions for training a model resulted in higher prediction accuracy.Vijay Mohan Nagulapati Hyunjun Lee DaWoon Jung SalaiSargunan S Paramanantham Boris Brigljevic Yunseok Choi Hankwon Lim 2021Energy and AI2021,5,3:0
Treatment of syringomyelia using uncultured umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells: A case report and review of literature显示文摘BACKGROUND Syringomyelia is a disease caused by the formation of a cavity inside the spinal cord and is accompanied by such symptoms as pain, paresthesia, and urination and defecation disorders, and in severe cases causes various paralyses.Currently, there are only surgical methods for the treatment of syringomyelia, but these methods carry the possibility of failure, recurrence, and side effects.CASE SUMMARY The patient was a 59-year-old woman who suffered from pain due to syringomyelia. For treatment, the patient received transplant of uncultured umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells. As intended, the patient's pain was relieved after treatment.Interestingly,an additional benefit was found in that the size of the cavity also decreased. After 2 years from the last treatment, the patient's cavity had almost completely disappeared and her syringomyelia was deemed cured.CONCLUSION Using uncultured umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells may be a new treatment alternative for syringomyelia.Hyunjun Ahn Sang Yeon Lee Won-Ju Jung Kye-Ho Lee 2022World Journal of Stem Cells2022,14,4:0
Prognostics and health management of alkaline water electrolyzer: Techno-economic analysis considering replacement moment显示文摘Recently, considerable attention has been paid to the installation of renewable energy capacity to mitigate global CO_(2) emissions.H_(2) produced using water electrolysis and renewable energy is regarded as a clean energy carrier, generating electricity without CO_(2) emissions, called‘Green H 2’.In this paper,a prognostics and health man-agement model for an alkaline water electrolyzer was proposed to predict the load voltage on the electrolyzer to obtain the state of health information. The prognostics and health management model was developed by training historical operating data via machine learning models, support vector machine and gaussian process regression, showing the root mean square error of 1.28×10^(−3) and 8.03×10^(−6).In addition,a techno-economic analysis was performed for a green H_(2) production system, composed of 1 MW of photovoltaic plant and 1 MW of alkaline water electrolyzer,to provide economic insights and feasibility of the system.A levelized cost of H_(2) of$6.89 kgH_(2)−1 was calculated and the potential to reach the levelized cost of H_(2) from steam methane reforming with carbon capture and storage was shown by considering the learning rate of the photovoltaic module and elec-trolyzer.Finally,the replacement of the alkaline water electrolyzer at around 10 years was preferred to increase the net present value from the green H_(2) production system when capital expenditure and replacement cost are low enough.Hyunjun Lee Jiwon Gu Boreum Lee Hyun-Seok Cho Hankwon Lim 2023Energy and AI2023,13,3:0
