1Morphology and contact mechanics influence adhesive characteristics of Dung Beetle's bristle and Gecko's setae显示文摘Geckos(Gekko gecko)use their hairy setae to adhere on various solid surfaces and dung beetles(Copris ochus Motschulsky)use their hairy bristles to anti-adhere in sticky environments. We study why two hairy systems express a conflict in functions by using SEM,histological approaches and functional experiments.Adhesion models and various parameters were collected and analyzed.Based on the morphological data and functional experimental results carried out by natural and denatured gecko setae and beetle bristles,we first demonstrated that the stiffness along the hair is 1000 to 30000 times that perpendicular to the hair. This stiffness difference is the key factor leading to the two hairy systems' functional differences.Slope of gecko setae reduces contact stiffness, increases contact points and real contact area that results in amazing adhesive abilities. On the other hand, stiff bristles in a beetle have higher contact stiffness, which reduces the real contact area and decreases the adhesion between two contact surfaces.Deformation of gecko setae destroys the hierarchical structure, increases the contact stiffness and results in a decrease of adhesion forces.Similarly, deformation of beetle bristles destroys the erect structure of the hair, interconnects the separated bristles and thus decreases the anti-adhesive functions. These observations inspire us in designing anti-adhesive and adhesive biomimeticDai Zhendong Sun Jiurong Yue David Guo Ce Cheng Hong Yu Min Ji Aihong 2007Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2007,17,9:8

3Size,morphology,and composition of lunar samples returned by Chang'E-5 mission显示文摘This study focuses on the physical and chemical properties of surficial lunar regolith(LR)samples returned from the Moon by the Chang’E-5(CE-5)mission.Insights regarding the effect of a new sampling geological site on the surficial lunar sample CE5 C0400 were illustrated using nondestructive techniques such as laser diffractometry coupled with image analysis,X-ray computed tomography, and field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Xray diffraction combined with Rietveld refinement. From the characterization analyses, the CE-5 sampling site in the northeastern Oceanus Procellarum on the Moon yields a unique collection of relatively regular-shaped and fine basalt-dominated particles. The median grain size D_(50) is(55.24±0.96)μm,falling within the relatively low end of the range of the Apollo lunar returned samples. The coefficient of uniformity C_(u)of 15.1 and the coefficient of curvature C_(c)of 1.7 could classify CE5 C0400 to be well-graded.The minerals in CE5 C0400 comprise approximately 44.5%pyroxene,30.4%plagioclase,3.6%olivine,and6.0%ilmenite.There is a relatively low content of approximately 15.5%glass phase in the CE-5 lunar sample. From the results,we deduce that the CE-5 LR structure could have mainly resulted from micrometeoroid impacts to achieve such a high level of maturity.Hui Zhang Xian Zhang Guang Zhang Keqi Dong Xiangjin Deng Xiaosong Gao Yaodong Yang Yuan Xiao Xiao Bai Kaixin Liang Yiwei Liu Wenbin Ma Shaofan Zhao Ce Zhang Xiaojing Zhang Jian Song Wei Yao Hong Chen Weihua Wang Zhigang Zou Mengfei Yang 2022Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2022,65,2:4

11Inter-visit measurement variability of conjunctival vasculature and circulation in habitual contact lens wearers and non-lens wearers显示文摘Background:The inter-visit variation of measuring bulbar conjunctival microvasculature and microcirculation needs to be considered when the results from multiple visits are interpreted. This study examined the inter-visit variability of measuring conjunctival microvasculature and microcirculation in habitual contact lens(HCL)wearers and non-contact lens(NCL)wearers.Methods:Twenty-eight subjects were recruited including 13 HCL wearers(10 females and 3 males;mean age±standard deviation,25.8±4.6 years)who had worn contact lenses on a daily basis for at least 3 years and 15 NCL wearers(10 females and 5 males, age 25.5±4.0 years)were recruited. The temporal bulbar conjunctiva was imaged using a functional slit-lamp bio-microscope(FSLB)imaging system.FSLB imaging was performed in the morning when the HCL wearers did not wear their lenses. The measurements included conjunctival vessel diameter, vessel density, blood flow velocity and flow volume. In addition, conjunctival microvasculature was analyzed using monofractal(Dbox, representing vessel density)and multifractal(D0 representing vessel complexity)analyses. The repeated measurement was conducted at least one week after the first visit and both eyes of each participant were imaged. The coefficient of variation(CV)was calculated as the standard deviation of the differences between test and re-test then divided by the mean of the measurements. The intra-class correlation coefficient(ICC)was also calculated. Results:No significant differences of all vascular measurements in both the right and left eyes were found between two groups(P>0.05).Between two measurements on two different visits, the CV was from 2.4%(vessel density D0)to 63.5%(blood flow volume Q)in HCL wearers and from 3.4%(D0)to 40.6%(blood flow volume)in NCL wearers. The ICC was from 0.60(vessel diameter)to 0.81(axial blood flow velocity VA)in HCL wearers and from 0.44(Q)to 0.68(cross-sectional blood flow velocity VS)in NCL wearers. Conclusions:The measurement variability of the vessel density of the bulbar conjunctiva appeared to have the smallest inter-visit variation. The measurement variability of the vasculature and circulation in HCL wearers were similar to that in NCL wearers.Jianhua Wang Liang Hu Ce Shi Hong Jiang 2019Eye and Vision2019,6,1:1
12Microcirculation in the conjunctiva and retina in healthy subjects显示文摘Background:The aim was to determine the relationship between bulbar conjunctival microcirculation and retinal microcirculation in a healthy population.Method:A functional slit-lamp biomicroscope(FSLB)was used to measure blood flow velocity(BFV)and blood flow rate(BFR)in the conjunctiva while a retinal function imager(RFI)was used to measure macular BFV and BFR in the retina. One eye of each subject of 58 self-reported healthy subjects was imaged in the same session on the same day. Results:The mean BFV in the venules of the conjunctiva was 0.49±0.13 mm/s,which was significantly slower than that in the retinal arterioles(3.71±0.78 mm/s,P<0.001)and retinal venules(2.98±0.58 mm/s,P<0.001).The BFR in the conjunctiva(0.09 nl/s)was also significantly lower than that in the retina(arterioles=0.81 nl/s,venules=0.68 nl/s,all P<0.001).The BFVs and BFRs were not related between the conjunctiva and retina(r ranged from−0.17 to−0.05,all P>0.05).Conclusion:The microcirculation in the retina appeared to be different from that in the conjunctiva.Ce Shi Hong Jiang Giovana Rosa Gameiro Jianhua Wang 2019Eye and Vision2019,6,1:1
13Improving diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy with a medical food containing L-methylfolate: a preliminary report显示文摘Background:Homocysteine and vitamin D may play a role in the development of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy in patients with diabetes mellitus(DM)and hypertension.Supplementing food with L-methylfolate and vitamin D theoretically may improve diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, however, the outcome of these nutritional approaches has not been fully examined.A retrospective case review was done of cases of retinopathy reversal in patients on Ocufolin^(TM) and a similar nonprescription multivitamin,Eyefolate^(TM).In this study, they were administered L-methylfolate(2.7 mg and 3.0 mg,respectively)and vitamin D3(4500 IU each). These dosages are significantly above the RDA but well below levels associated with toxicity.Case presentation:Seven patients had nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy(NPDR)and some of them had hypertension. One patient had only hypertensive retinopathy. All patients were instructed to take Ocufolin^(TM)medical food as a food supplement.Baseline genetic testing for MTHFR polymorphisms was conducted.Fundus photography was used to document the fundus condition of the enrolled eyes in 8 NPDR patients at the initial and follow-up visits.Microaneurysms(MA)and exudates were observed to be improved in some trial patients. All subjects had one or more MTHFR polymorphisms. All had diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy,or both.MAs were resolved, and exudates were decreased in 8/8 cases after taking the medical food.Retinal edema was found in 2/8 cases and improved or resolved in both cases after taking the medical food or the supplement. The best corrected visual activity was stable or improved in 8/8 cases. Conclusion:We report a series of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy cases with MTHFR polymorphisms and the improvement of retinal microvasculature(mainly MAs)in serial fundus photography after taking a medical food or supplement containing L-methylfolate and vitamin D.It appears that the use of nutritional supplements and medical foods containing L-methylfolate and vitamin D may be effective in facilitating the improvement of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy.Jianhua Wang Craig Brown Ce Shi Justin Townsend Giovana Rosa Gameiro Peng Wang Hong Jiang 2019Eye and Vision2019,6,1:1

20Nutritional and medical food therapies for diabetic retinopathy显示文摘Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is a form of microangiopathy.Reducing oxidative stress in the mitochondria and cell membranes decreases ischemic injury and end-organ damage to the retina.New approaches are needed, which reduce the risk and improve the outcomes of DR while complementing current therapeutic approaches.Homocysteine(Hcy)elevation and oxidative stress are potential therapeutic targets in DR.Common genetic polymorphisms such as those of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase(MTHFR),increase Hcy and DR risk and severity.Patients with DR have high incidences of deficiencies of crucial vitamins, minerals, and related compounds, which also lead to elevation of Hcy and oxidative stress.Addressing the effects of the MTHFR polymorphism and addressing comorbid deficiencies and insufficiencies reduce the impact and severity of the disease. This approach provides safe and simple strategies that support conventional care and improve outcomes.Suboptimal vitamin co-factor availability also impairs the release of neurotrophic and neuroprotective growth factors.Collectively, this accounts for variability in presentation and response of DR to conventional therapy.Fortunately, there are straightforward recommendations for addressing these issues and supporting traditional treatment plans. We have reviewed the literature for nutritional interventions that support conventional therapies to reduce disease risk and severity.Optimal combinations of vitamins B1,B2,B6,L-methylfolate,methylcobalamin(B12),C,D,natural vitamin E complex,lutein,zeaxanthin,alpha-lipoic acid, and n-acetylcysteine are identified for protecting the retina and choroid.Certain medical foods have been successfully used as therapy for retinopathy.Recommendations based on this review and our clinical experience are developed for clinicians to use to support conventional therapy for DR.DR from both type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1DM)and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)have similar retinal findings and responses to nutritional therapies.Ce Shi Peng Wang Shriya Airen Craig Brown Zhiping Liu Justin H.Townsend Jianhua Wang Hong Jiang 2020Eye and Vision2020,7,1:1
