Impact of anthropogenic drivers on subaqueous topographical change in the Datong to Xuliujing reach of the Yangtze River显示文摘Changes of subaqueous topography in shallow offshore water pose safety risks for embankments, navigation, and ports. This study conducted measurements of subaqueous topography between Datong and Xuliujing in the Yangtze River using a Sea Bat 7125 multi-beam echo sounder, and the channel change from 1998 to 2013 was calculated using historical bathymetry data. The study revealed several important results:(1)the overall pattern of changes through the studied stretch of the river was erosion–deposition–erosion.Erosion with a volume 700×10~6m^3occurred in the upper reach, deposition of about 204×10~6m^3occurred in the middle reach, and erosion of about 602×10~6m^3occurred in the lower reach.(2)Dunes are the most common microtopographic feature, accounting for 64.3%of the Datong to Xuliujing reach, followed by erosional topography and flat river topography, accounting for 27.6%and 6.6%,respectively.(3)Human activities have a direct impact on the development of the microtopography. For instance, the mining of sand formed holes on the surface of dunes with lengths of 20–35 m and depths of 3–5 m.We concluded that the overall trend of erosion(net erosion volume of 468×10~6m^3)occurred in the study area mainly because of the decreased sediment discharge following the closure of the Three Gorges Dam.However, other human activities were also impact factors of topographic change.Use of embankments and channel management reduced channel width, restricted river meandering, and exacerbated the erosion phenomenon.Shuwei ZHENG Heqin CHENG Shengyu SHI Wei XU Quanping ZHOU Yuehua JIANG Fengnian ZHOU Minxiong CAO 2018Science China Earth Sciences2018,61,7:10
Morphological evolution of mouth bars on the Yangtze estuarine waterways in the last 100 years显示文摘在 Yangtze 河口水路的嘴酒吧在河口,洪水分泌物和上海港口的建设以内在航行运输上有重要影响。 HE Yufang CHENG Heqin CHEN Jiyu 2013Journal of Geographical Sciences2013,23,2:9
The self-regulation process and its mechanism of channels' bed changes in the Changjiang(Yangtze) Estuary in China显示文摘Recent bathymetric changes in the Changjiang Estuary under the influence of artificial regulation engineerings and basin reservoirs have been analyzed based on the maritime charts since 1997 and recent fieldworks. The results indicate a slight erosion of the channels in the upper and middle estuary, continuing deposition and seaward move of the mouth bar crest and intensifying erosion at the nearshore seabed. It is noteworthy that the morphological evolution caused by intensive human activities dominates over the changes from nature process.First, the riverbes are eroded overall in the South Branch(SB), the South Channel(SC) and the upper and middle reaches of the North Channel(NC). The nearshore seabed outside the river mouth is being eroded slightly, which is attributed to the declining sediment supply from the Changjiang Basin due to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam upstream. The sediment above the seabed is very active and coarsened, meanwhile, sand waves are becoming more distinct. Second, a deposition occurs in the North Brach(NB), the mouth of the NC, the mouth bars of the North Passage(NP) and the South Passage(SP) and especially the main channel of the NP, where it shows a massive siltation after the deep waterway project. The reasons for the recent changes are not only the dynamic structure in estuarine mouth bars, but also the supply of sediment resuspension in a local and offshore area. Meanwhile, the severe erosion and siltation in some reaches is related to the construction of estuarine engineerings. It is indicated that the Changjiang Estuary is gradually self-adjusted and adapting to the varying natural factors and intensive human activities. The study on the mechanism of self-regulation of the recent bathymetric changes in the Changjiang Estuary has important and practical significance.ZHANG Xiaohe LI Jiufa ZHU Wenwu CHENG Heqin CHEN Wei 2015Acta Oceanologica Sinica2015,34,7:5
Sand mining impact on Poyang Lake: a case study based on high-resolution bathymetry and sub-bottom data显示文摘Poyang Lake in the Changjiang(Yangtze)River catchment has undergone frequent spring drought since 2003,and some researchers attributed this phenomenon to sand mining and the lakebed deformation in the outlet channel linking the lake with Changjiang River main channel. However, there is still a lack of high-resolution subaqueous geomorphological evidence of how sand mining led to lakebed deformation in the outlet channel. We examined the bed morphology and sub-bottom sedimentary structure of the outlet channel, using a multibeam echo sounder and sub-bottom profi ler in Poyang Lake.We found that:(1)the subaqueous micro-topography types of the outlet channel are characterized by sand mining disturbance, natural erosional topography, and fl at bed and dunes, accounting for 44.9%,21.4%,28.6%,and 5.1%of the channel area,respectively;and(2)sand mining activity aff ects the local bed topography extensively and signifi cantly. The depth of sandpits caused by sand mining varied from 1.4 m to 12 m deeper than the surrounding bed surface, with 4.41 m of depth increase on average.Hence, the large-scale high-intensity sand mining activities and their signifi cant geomorphic eff ects demand for an improved assessment for future management and longer-term sustainability.Because of the large-scale and ongoing high-intensity sand mining activities in the Poyang Lake outlet channel, these eff ects should raise caution in the future and contribute to monitoring eff orts that are essential to implement sustainable management solutions. The present study and techniques implemented can serve as a scientifi c reference for dam construction and sand mining within the Poyang Lake basin.Shuwei ZHENG Heqin CHENG Ming TANG Wei XU Enfeng LIU Shu GAO Jim BEST Yuehua JIANG Quanping ZHOU 2022Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2022,40,4:3
Nonlinear advection,Coriolis force, and frictional influence in the South Channel of the Yangtze Estuary,China显示文摘Observation data of along-estuary and lateral current velocities over a transect located at the South Channel of the Yangtze estuary was obtained during a spring tide in August 2011.Harmonic analysis was done on the current velocities to get a mean component and a semi-diurnal component.Based on these two components, the driving mechanisms of mean lateral flow and M2 lateral tidal flow are shown and analyzed respectively. The dominant driving force of mean lateral flow is nonlinear advection and that of lateral M2 tidal flow is Coriolis force. The friction plays an important role near the bottom and surface for both lateral mean flow and M2 tidal flow.YANG ZhongYong CHENG HeQin LI JiuFa 2015Science China Earth Sciences2015,58,3:2
Fluctuations in the tidal limit of the Yangtze River estuary in the last decade显示文摘The tidal limit is the key interface indicating whether water levels will be affected by tidal waves, which is of great significance to navigation safety and regional flood control. Due to limitations in research methods, recent changes in the Yangtze River tidal limit, caused by sea level rise and large-scale engineering projects, urgently need to be studied. In this study, spectrum analysis was undertaken on measured water level data from downstream Yangtze River hydrological stations from2007 to 2016. The bounds of the tidal limit were identified through comparisons between the spectra and red noise curves, and the fluctuation range and characteristics were summarized. The results showed that:(1) During the extremely dry period, when the flow rate at Jiujiang station was about 8440 m3 s-1, the tidal limit was near Jiujiang; whereas during the flood season, when the flow rate at Jiujiang station was about 66700 m3 s-1, the tidal limit was between Zongyang Sluice and Chikou station.(2)From the upper to lower reach, the effect of the Jiujiang flow rate on the tidal limit weakens, while the effect of the Nanjing tidal range increases. The tidal limit fluctuates under similar flow rates and tidal ranges, and the fluctuation range increases with increasing flow rate and decreasing tidal range.(3) With the continued influence of rising sea levels and construction in river basin estuaries, the tidal limit may move further upstream.Shengyu SHI Heqin CHENG Xiaona XUAN Fangxi HU Xiaoting YUAN Yuehua JIANG Quanping ZHOU 2018Science China Earth Sciences2018,61,8:2
Recognition of Fluvial Bank Erosion Along the Main Stream of the Yangtze River显示文摘Recognizing the risk of fluvial bank erosion is an important challenge to ensure the early warning and prevention or control of bank collapse in river catchments, including in the Yangtze River. This study introduces a geomorphons-based algorithm to extract river bank erosion information by adjusting the flatness from multibeam echo-sounding data. The algorithm maps ten subaqueous morphological elements, including the slope, footslope, flat, ridge, peak, valley, pit, spur, hollow, and shoulder.Twentyone flatness values were used to build an interpretation strategy for the subaqueous features of riverbank erosion. The results show that the bank scarp, which is the erosion carrier,is covered by slope cells when the flatness is 10°.The scour pits and bank scars are indicated by pit cells near the bank and hollow cells in the bank slope at a flatness of 0°.Fluvial subaqueous dunes are considered an important factor accelerating bank erosion, particularly those near the bank toe;the critical flatness of the dunes was evaluated as 3°.The distribution of subaqueous morphological elements was analyzed and used to map the bank erosion inventory. The analysis results revealed that the near-bank zone, with a relatively large water depth,is prone to form large scour pits and a long bank scarp.Arc collapse tends to occur at the long bank scarp to shorten its length. The varied assignment of flatness values among terrestrial, marine, and fluvial environments is discussed, concluding that diversified flatness values significantly enable fluvial subaqueous morphology recognition.Consequently, this study provides a reference for the flatness-based recognition of fluvial morphological elements and enhances the targeting of subaqueous signs and risks of bank failure with a range of multibeam bathymetric data.Ge Yan Heqin Cheng Zeyu Jiang Lizhi Teng Ming Tang Tian Shi Yuehua Jiang Guoqiang Yang Quanping Zhou 2022Engineering2022,,12:0
Sediment budget and riverbed deformation in the uppermost part of the lower Yangtze River, China显示文摘The Yangtze River(YR), similar to most large rivers in the world, has experienced significant changes in its depositional environment due to anthropogenic disturbances and climatic influences in recent decades. However, knowledge of how the river channel and bed deformation respond to these changes in the uppermost part of the lower YR, a 200-km-long branched channel, is limited. In the current study, historical bathymetric data collected from 1992 to 2013 and high-resolution multibeam echo sounder(MBES) data obtained from 2015 to 2016 were analyzed to address the changes in the depositional environment. The results indicate that the whole riverbed in the Hukou to Datong reach(HDR) has been scouring over the past two decades and this trend is expected to continue in the future due to decreasing sediment supply from the upper watershed. The amount of net erosion from the HDR during 1992-2013approximately accounted for 7.2% of total sediment load in the Yangtze River(5.02 billion metric tons at Datong). The evolution of the riverbed is trending towards stabilization even though the patterns of erosion and/or deposition in the HDR have dramatically changed in the last two decades. The part of the channel from the upper 100 km to Datong was found to be a sensitive reach that first showed erosion from 1992 to 2003 and showed deposition during 2003-2008, and then mild erosion during 2008-2013in response to environmental changes. Thus, the findings indicate that riverine channel deformation in response to anthropogenic disturbance and climate influence is dynamic in different reaches, and this finding has both scientific and practical significance in terms of understanding channel stability and its response to external stressors.Shuwei Zheng Huanlong Luo Jiayue Zhang Heqin Cheng Zijun Li Yugai Ma Shuaihu Wu Enfeng Liu 2022International Journal of Sediment Research2022,37,4:0
Changes over flood season in turbidity maximum zone in a mountainous macrotidal estuary from 1986 to 2020显示文摘The construction of channel regulation projects, reservoirs, and other human activities have led to significant changes in channel geometry and hydrodynamic conditions in mountainous macrotidal estuaries. However, their impact on the long-term evolution of the turbidity maximum zone(TMZ)in these estuaries is still unclear. Therefore, the Minjiang Estuary(ME)was selected as the study area and using the Gabor filter and surface suspended sediment concentration(SSSC)data retrieved from GF PMS/WFV and Landsat-TM/ETM+/OLI images in the flood season from 1986 to 2020,the flow direction of Chuanshi Waterway, the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of TMZ in the ME,and the influence of human activities on these were analyzed. The results indicate that during flood tides in the past 35 years, the TMZ was mainly distributed in sections from the Changmen to the Chuanshi and Meihua waterways. The construction of the Shuikou Reservoir caused the SSSC to decrease by 65 mg/L at the Chuanshi Tidal Gauge Station in the ME.The TMZ in the ME waterway channel notably migrated toward the sea due to the waterway regulation project, with the landward and seaward boundaries moving by 2.5 km and 3 km seaward, respectively. The main distribution area moved from Jinpaimen to the section from Chuanshi Waterway to the mouth of the ME.These variation characteristics were basically consistent with the annual average TMZ in the flood season.Through the interactions between nature and human interventions, the flow regime of the ME tended to converge in the flood season. Therefore, human activities have significantly impacted the long-term evolution of the TMZ in the ME.LIU Ruiqing CHENG Heqin TENG Lizhi FAN Heshan 2023Journal of Geographical Sciences2023,33,5:0
