| 2 | Reconstruction of precipita- tion in the last 140 years fromtree ring at south margin of the Tengger Desert, China显示文摘Based on the tree ring width index of Pinus tabulaeformis, precipitation in the last 140 years was recon-structed at south margin of the Tengger Desert. The results indicated that there were obvious fluctuations of dry-wet changes in precipitation: two wet periods occurred during 1868―1876 and 1932―1939, and two dry periods during 1877―1894 and 1924―1932, however, the years 1887 and 1888 were a little wet. There were small changes in precipita-tion during 1895―1923 and 1940―2000. As compared to the average, the maximum increasing range of precipitation amounted to 56% during the wet periods, and 42% during the dry periods. And the range of variability of precipitation exceeded 30% in 19 years. There was no obvious consistent drying or wetting trend in the last 140 years. But since 1940 fluctuating scope of precipitation tended to be smaller, while the frequency of the fluctuation tended to be larger. | 3 | Physicochemical characteristics of ambient particles settling upon leaf surfaces of urban plants in Beijing显示文摘Particulate pollution is a serious health problem throughout the world, exacerbating a wide range of respiratory and vascular illnesses in urban areas. Urban plants play an important role in reducing particulate pollution. Physicochemical characteristics of ambient particles settling upon leaf surfaces of eleven roadside plants at four sites of Beijing were studies. Results showed that density of particles on the leaf surfaces greatly varied with plant species and traffic condition. Fraxinus chinensis, Sophora japonica, Ailanthus altissima, Syringa oblata and Prunus persica had larger densities of particles among the tall species. Due to resuspension of road dust, the densities of particles of Euonymus japonicus and Parthenocissus quinquefolia with low sampling height were 2—35 times to other taller tree species. For test plant species, micro-roughness of leaf surfaces and density of particles showed a close correlation. In general, the larger micro-roughness of leaf surfaces is, the larger density of particles is. Particles settling upon leaf surfaces were dominantly PM10 (particulate matter less than 10 ?滋m in aerodynamic diameter; 98.4%) and PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 ?滋m in aerodynamic diameter; 64.2%) which were closely relative to human health. Constant elements of particles were C, O, K, Ca, Si, Al, Mg, Na, Fe, S, Cl and minerals with higher content were SiO2, CaCO3, CaMg(CO3)2, NaCl and 2CaSO4·H2O, SiO2. CaCO3 and CaMg(CO3)2 mainly came from resuspension of road dust. 2CaSO4·H2O was produced by the reaction between CaCO3 derived from earth dust or industrial emission and SO2, H2SO4 or sulfate. | 4 | Comparative analysis of GF-1,HJ-1,and Landsat-8 data for estimating the leaf area index of winter wheat显示文摘Using simultaneously collected remote sensing data and field measurements,this study firstly assessed the consistency and applicability of China high-resolution earth observation system satellite 1(GF-1) wide field of view(WFV) camera,environment and disaster monitoring and forecasting satellite(HJ-1) charge coupled device(CCD),and Landsat-8 operational land imager(OLI) data for estimating the leaf area index(LAI) of winter wheat via reflectance and vegetation indices(VIs). The accuracies of these LAI estimates were then assessed through comparison with an empirical model and the PROSAIL radiative transfer model. The effects of radiation calibration,spectral response functions,and spatial resolution on discrepancies in the LAI estimates between the different sensors were also analyzed. The results yielded the following observations:(1) The correlation between reflectance from different sensors is relative good,with the adjusted coefficients of determination(R2) between 0.375 to 0.818. The differences in reflectance are ranging from 0.002 to 0.054. The correlation between VIs from different sensors is high with the R2 between 0.729 and 0.933. The differences in the VIs are ranging from 0.07 to 0.156. These results show the three sensors' images can all be used for cross calibration of the reflectance and VIs.(2) The four VIs from the three sensors are all demonstrated to be highly correlated with LAI(R2 between 0.703 and 0.849). The linear models associated with the 2-band enhanced vegetation index(EVI2),which feature the highest R2(higher than 0.746) and the lowest root mean square errors(RMSE)(less than 0.21),were selected to estimate the winter wheat LAI. The accuracy of the estimated LAI from Landsat-8 was the highest,with the relative errors(RE) of 2.18% and an RMSE of 0.13,while the HJ-1 was the lowest,with the RE of 2.43% and the RMSE of 0.15.(3) The inversion errors in the different sensors' LAI estimates using the PROSAIL model are small. | 7 | Characteristics of surface runoff in a sandy area in southern Mu Us sandy land显示文摘To better understand the key role of biological soil crusts(BSCs) in redistribution processes of limited water resources in semi-arid sandy ecosystems,surface runoff over BSCs in a sandy area in the southern Mu Us sandy area was observed in this study.The results indicated that runoff occurred twice among six rainfall events during the experimental period.Runoff yields varied among types of BSCs,and that they increased in the following order:light algae crusts,dark algae crusts and moss crusts.These findings showed that runoff yields were increasing with the development of BSCs.The percentage of runoff in individual rainfall events increased from light algae crusts to moss crusts,which indicated that the redistribution ratios of different types of BSCs differed.Surface runoff of BSCs may be influenced by rainfall,rain intensity,degree of water saturation of the BSCs before the rain and degree of development of BSCs.Formation of BSCs on the surface of sand dunes changed the spatial distribution pattern of water in this semi-arid sandy ecosystem,which increased the heterogeneity of resources such as water and nutrients.Therefore,making appropriate disturbances of BSCs during storm season is beneficial to maintaining the balance of natural resources in the semi-arid sandy ecosystem. | WU YongSheng HASI Eerdun Wugetemole WU Xia | 2012 | Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,2: | 8 |
| 8 | Research advances of SAR remote sensing for agriculture applications: A review显示文摘Synthetic aperture radar(SAR) is an effective and important technique in monitoring crop and other agricultural targets because its quality does not depend on weather conditions. SAR is sensitive to the geometrical structures and dielectric properties of the targets and has a certain penetration ability to some agricultural targets. The capabilities of SAR for agriculture applications can be organized into three main categories: crop identification and crop planting area statistics, crop and cropland parameter extraction, and crop yield estimation. According to the above concepts, this paper systematically analyses the recent progresses, existing problems and future directions in SAR agricultural remote sensing. In recent years, with the remarkable progresses in SAR remote sensing systems, the available SAR data sources have been greatly enriched. The accuracies of the crop classification and parameter extraction by SAR data have been improved progressively. But the development of modern agriculture has put forwarded higher requirements for SAR remote sensing. For instance, the spatial resolution and revisiting cycle of the SAR sensors, the accuracy of crop classification, the whole phenological period monitoring of crop growth status, the soil moisture inversion under the condition of high vegetation coverage, the integrations of SAR remote sensing retrieval information with hydrological models and/or crop growth models, and so on, still need to be improved. In the future, the joint use of optical and SAR remote sensing data, the application of multi-band multi-dimensional SAR, the precise and high efficient modeling of electromagnetic scattering and parameter extraction of crop and farmland composite scene, the development of light and small SAR systems like those onboard unmanned aerial vehicles and their applications will be active research areas in agriculture remote sensing. | 9 | Self-organizing feature map neural network classification of the ASTER data based on wavelet fusion显示文摘Most methods for classification of remote sensing data are based on the statistical parameter evaluation with the assumption that the samples obey the normal distribution. How-ever, more accurate classification results can be obtained with the neural network method through getting knowledge from environments and adjusting the parameter (or weight) step by step by a specific measurement. This paper focuses on the double-layer structured Kohonen self-organizing feature map (SOFM), for which all neurons within the two layers are linked one another and those of the competition layers are linked as well along the sides. Therefore, the self-adapting learning ability is improved due to the effective competition and suppression in this method. The SOFM has become a hot topic in the research area of remote sensing data classi-fication. The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer (ASTER) is a new satellite-borne remote sensing instrument with three 15-m resolution bands and three 30-m resolution bands at the near infrared. The ASTER data of Dagang district, Tianjin Munici-pality is used as the test data in this study. At first, the wavelet fusion is carried out to make the spatial resolutions of the ASTER data identical; then, the SOFM method is applied to classifying the land cover types. The classification results are compared with those of the maximum likeli-hood method (MLH). | 10 | Structural variations of sand- bearing airflow over dune at southeastern fringe of Tengger Desert显示文摘From the analytical results of observed data on sand transport rates at different positions of dune surface at southeastern fringe of Tengger Desert, it has been found that the vertical distribution of blown sand flux exhibits a no-ticeable variation when sand grains move upslope and downslope of dune surface under the action of wind force. Within the height of 20 cm above the sand surface, the verti-cal distribution of mass flux at different positions from toe to dune crest of stoss slope of sand dunes coincides with a single exponentially decaying law; while the vertical distribution of mass flux over the lee slope occurs as two variable zones, with the height of 8—12 cm as the dividing line, the sand transport rate below this height exponentially decreases with increasing height, but above this height decreases in a power function law. On the stoss slope, the relative sand transport rate in the upper layer of sand flow tends to decrease with the increasing wind velocity and the total sand transport rate towards the dune crest due to the shortened trajectory length of saltation sand grains moving upslope. | 11 | Landscape pattern change and driving force of blowout distribution in the Hulun Buir Sandy Grassland显示文摘The land coverage pattern changes for the past 50 years in a typical region of the Hulun Buir Sandy Grassland were interpreted and analyzed based on a series of remote sensing images in 1959, 2002, 2004 and 2009. The temporal and spatial changes of landscape patterns were revealed and the driving forces were analyzed. The results show that all land coverage types had large variable amplitudes. The grassland area decreased, whereas other areas increased. Owing to implementation of artificial sand fixation from 2004 to 2009, the areas of flowing blowouts and depositional area decreased by 71,369 and 128,835 m2 , respectively. The average patch area reduced, but the number of blowouts increased, fractal dimension increased, and blowout structure became complex. The fragmentation index increased, whereas contagion index decreased. | 12 | Characteristics of stemflow for sand-fixed shrubs in Mu Us sandy land, Northwest China显示文摘Little work has been done on stemflow for desert shrubs in China. This study measured stemflow in two shrubs of Salix psammophila C. Wang et Chang Y. Yang and Artemisia sphaerocephala Krasch in Mu Us sandy land and established a relationship between stemflow and canopy characteristics, rainfall amount and intensity. During the experimental period, the amount of stemflow for S. psammophila and A. sphaerocephala accounted for 7.6% and 2.7% of the gross rainfall respectively. Statistical analysis showed that there was a significant positive linear correlation between rainfall and stemflow for the two shrubs; while the relationship between stemflow percentage and rainfall suggested that there existed a rainfall depth threshold of 3―5 mm for S. psammophila and 5―7 mm for A. sphaerocephala. Stemflow percentage positively increased with rainfall depth increasing before the rainfall depth threshold values had been reached but showed stability after the threshold. A stepwise regression analysis suggested that the shrubs with more branches, larger crown volume and smaller branch angle inclination tended to collect more volumes of stemflow.
