Morphological and Physiological Responses of Plants to Cadmium Toxicity: A Review显示文摘Cadmium(Cd) contamination has posed an increasing challenge to environmental quality and food security. In recent years, phytoremediation has been particularly scrutinized because it is cost-effective and environmentally friendly, especially the use of metal-hyperaccumulating plants to extract or mine heavy metals from polluted soils. Under Cd stress, responses of hyperaccumulator and non-hyperaccumulator plants differ in morphological responses and physiological processes such as photosynthesis and respiration, uptake, transport, and assimilation of minerals and nitrogen, and water uptake and transport, which contribute to their ability to accumulate and detoxify Cd. This review aims to provide a brief overview of the recent progresses in the differential responses of hyperaccumulator and non-accumulator plants to Cd toxicity in terms of growth and physiological processes. Such information might be useful in developing phytoremediation technology for contaminated soils.HE Shanying YANG Xiaoe Zhenli HE Virupax C.BALIGAR 2017Pedosphere2017,27,3:34
Phospholipid Fatty Acid Profiles of Chinese Red Soils with Varying Fertility Levels and Land Use Histories显示文摘Analysis of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) was used to estimate the microbial community structures of eight Chinese red soils with different fertility levels and land use histories. The total amounts of PLFAs in the soils were significantly correlated with soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, microbial biomass C and basal respiration, indicating that total PLFA was closely related to fertility and sustainability in these highly weathered soils. Soils for the eroded wasteland were rich in Gram-positive species. When the eroded soils were planted with citrus trees, the soil microbial population had changed little in 4 years but took up to 8-12 years before it reached a significantly different population. Multivariate analysis of PLFAs demonstrated that land use history and plant cover type had a significant impact on microbial community structure. However, the difference of soil microbial community structure in the paddy field compared to other land uses was not larger than expected in this experiment.YAO HUAIYING, HE ZHENLI and HUANG CHANGYONG Department of Resource Sciences, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310029 (China) 2001Pedosphere2001,11,2:11
Physicochemical analysis of individual atmospheric fine particles based on effective surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy显示文摘Fine particles associated with haze pollution threaten the health of more than 400 million people in China. It is therefore of great importance to thoroughly investigate and understand their composition. To determine the physicochemical properties in atmospheric fine particles at the micrometer level, we described a sensitive and feasible surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS) method using Ag foil as a substrate. This novel method enhanced the Raman signal intensities up to 10,000 a.u. for ν(NO_3^-) in fine particles. The SERS effect of Ag foil was further studied experimentally and theoretically and found to have an enhancement factor of the order of ~10~4. Size-fractionated real particle samples with aerodynamic diameters of 0.4–2.5 μm were successfully collected on a heavy haze day, allowing ready observation of morphology and identification of chemical components, such as soot, nitrates, and sulfates. These results suggest that the Ag-foil-based SERS technique can be effectively used to determine the microscopic characteristics of individual fine particles, which will help to understand haze formation mechanisms and formulate governance policies.Zhenli Sun Fengkui Duan Kebin He Jingjing Du Liu Yang Hui Li Tao Ma Shuo Yang 2019Journal of Environmental Sciences2019,31,1:9
Effects of methamidophos and glyphosate on copper sorption-desorption behavior in soils显示文摘A batch-equilibration technique was employed to study the impact of two organophosphorus pesticides methamidophos (MDP) and glyphosate (GPS) on copper (Cu2+) sorptiondesorption for phaeozem and burozem collected from Northeastern China. The addition of the two pesticides decreased Cu2+ sorption, increased Cu2+ desorption and prolonged the equilibrium time of Cu2+ sorption-desorption. But GPS appeared to exert a stronger influence on Cu2+ sorption-desorption due to its stronger complexion with Cu2+. When MDP was added, Cu2+ sorption-desorption was linearly correlated with MDP treatment concentrations. But in the presence of GPS, Cu2+ sorption first underwent a rapid decrease period, and then slowly tended towards a steady period. The reverse pattern could be found for Cu2+ desorption in the presence of GPS.Without pesticides and with the existence of MDP, Cu2+ sorption-desorption kinetics was well conformed to two-constant equation and Elovich equation. But that was not the case for Cu2+ desorption kinetics in the presence of GPS although its sorption could be also described by these two equations.YU Ying, ZHOU Qixing & HE Zhenli Key Laboratory of Terrestrial Ecological Process, Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China College of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310029, China 2005Science China(Life Sciences)2005,48,z1:7
A Comparative Study of the Cellular Microscopic Characteristics and Mechanisms of Maize Seedling Damage from Superabsorbent Polymers显示文摘Superabsorbent polymers(SAPs) as soil moisture conditioners have been increasingly used in agriculture, but conflicting results were reported regarding the effects of SAPs on crop growth. In this study, both laboratory cultivation and analysis were conducted to investigate the effects of different SAPs on the growth and physiology of crops under water-saving agricultural practices. Maize(Zea mays L.) seedlings were cultivated using distilled water or three different SAP hydrogels, sodium polyacrylate(SP), potassium polyacrylate(PP), and sodium polyacrylate embedded with phosphate rock powder(SPP), as growth media. Growth characteristics of the model plant and damage were assessed using scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The results showed that both the SP and PP treatments had pronounced negative effect on the hydrogels of growth of maize seedlings. The SPP treatment appeared to facilitate the stem-leaf growth and had no obvious adverse effect on root growth. All the three hydrogel treatments caused varying degrees of damage to the organizational structure and cellular morphology of the roots, with the SP and PP treatments causing the most severe damage; the membrane system of root cells was damaged by both SP and PP treatments. An excessive accumulation of sodium and reduction of calcium occurred in the roots may be responsible for the observed damage to the cell membrane system, which, in turn, may have promoted the wilting of the cells.CHEN Xian HUANG Lei MAO Xiaoyun LIAO Zongwen Zhenli HE 2017Pedosphere2017,27,2:6
Effects of a New-Type Cleaning Agent and a Plant Growth Regulator on Phytoextraction of Cadmium from a Contaminated Soil显示文摘In China, great efforts are being made to remediate farmlands polluted by heavy metals. In this study, a soil pot experiment was conducted to examine the effects of a new-type cleaning agent, methylglycinediacetic acid(MGDA), and a plant growth regulator(PGR), diethl aminoethyl hexanoate(DA-6), on plant growth and extraction and detoxification of cadmium(Cd) by ryegrass. The results showed that foliar spray of DA-6 alone improved plant growth, with root length and shoot dry biomass increased by 38.5%–58.6% and 71.1%–89.3%, respectively, whereas addition of MGDA alone decreased root length and shoot dry biomass by 10.3%–18.6%and 9.1%–21.8%, respectively. Diethl aminoethyl hexanoate promoted the binding of Cd to cell walls and thus alleviated the toxicity of Cd and/or MGDA to plants. Applications of DA-6 and/or MGDA resulted in a significant increase in Cd extraction efficiency(P < 0.05), and the efficiency decreased in the order of MGDA + DA-6 > DA-6 > MGDA. The treatment of MGDA + DA-6 achieved 2.2%, 1.7%, and 0.8% Cd extraction efficiency by ryegrass in soils spiked with 25, 50, 100 mg Cd kg^(-1), respectively. Therefore, treatment of MGDA + DA-6 could be an efficient method for enhancing phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil by ryegrass.HE Shanying GUO Haihui Zhenli HE WANG Lei 2019Pedosphere2019,29,2:5
Heavy metal phytoextraction by Sedum alfredii is affected by continual clipping and phosphorus fertilization amendment显示文摘Improving the efficacy of phytoextraction is critical for its successful application in metal contaminated soils. Mineral nutrition affects plant growth and metal absorption and subsequently the accumulation of heavy metal through hyper-accumulator plants. This study assessed the effects of di-hydrogen phosphates (KH2PO4, Ca(H2PO4)2, NaH2PO4 and NH4H2PO4) application at three levels (22, 88 and 352 mg P/kg soil) on Sedum alfredii growth and metal uptake by three consecutive harvests on aged and Zn/Cd combined contaminated paddy soil. The addition of phosphates (P) significantly increased the amount of Zn taken up by S. alfredii due to increased shoot Zn concentration and dry matter yield (DMY) (P < 0.05). The highest phytoextraction of Zn and Cd was observed in KH2PO4 and NH4H2PO4 treatment at 352 mg P/kg soil. The amount of Zn removed by phytoextraction increased in the order of 1st clipping < 2nd clipping < 3rd clipping, and for Cd extraction the order was 2nd clipping < 1st clipping < 3rd clipping. These results indicate that the application of P fertilizers coupled with multiple cuttings can enhance the removal of Zn and Cd from contaminated soils by S. alfredii, thus shortening the time needed for accomplishing remediation goals.Huagang Huang Tingqiang Li D.K.Gupta Zhenli He Xiao-e Yang Bingnan Ni Mao Li 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,3:4
Profiling of hepatocellular carcinoma neoantigens reveals immune microenvironment and clonal evolution related patterns显示文摘Objective: Neoantigens derived from tumor-specific genomic alterations have demonstrated great potential for immunotherapeutic interventions in cancers. However, the comprehensive profile of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) neoantigens and their complex interplay with immune microenvironment and tumor evolution have not been fully addressed. Methods: Here we integrated whole exome sequencing data, transcriptome sequencing data and clinical information of 72 primary HCC patients to characterize the HCC neoantigen profile, and systematically explored its interactions with tumor clonal evolution, driver mutations and immune microenvironments. Results: We observed that higher somatic mutation/neoantigen load was associated with better clinical outcomes and HCC patients could be further divided into two subgroups with distinct prognosis based on their neoantigen expression patterns. HCC subgroup with neoantigen expression probability high(NEP-H) showed more aggressive pathologic features including increased incidence of tumor thrombus(P=0.038), higher recurrence rate(P=0.029),more inclined to lack tumor capsule(P=0.026) and with more microsatellite instability sites(P=0.006). In addition,NEP-H subgroup was also characterized by higher chance to be involved in tumor clonal evolution [odds ratio(OR)=46.7, P<0.001]. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed that upregulation of MYC and its targets could suppress immune responses, leading to elevated neoantigen expression proportion in tumor cells. Furthermore, we discovered an immune escape mechanism that tumors could become more inconspicuous by evolving subclones with less immunogenicity. We observed that smaller clonal mutation clusters with higher immunogenicity in tumor were more likely to involve in clonal evolution. Based on identified neoantigen profiles, we also discovered series of neoantigenic hotspot genes, which could serve as potential actionable targets in future. Conclusions: Our results revealed the landscape of HCC neoantigens and discovered two clinically relevant subgroups with distinct neoantigen expression patterns, suggesting the neoantigen expression should be fully considered in future immunotherapeutic interventions.Zhenli Li Geng Chen Zhixiong Cai Xiuqing Dong Lei He Liman Qiu Yongyi Zeng Xiaolong Liu Jingfeng Liu 2021Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2021,33,3:3

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering for mixing state characterization of individual fine particles during a haze episode in Beijing,China显示文摘The nondestructive characterization of the mixing state of individual fine particles using the traditional single particle analysis technique remains a challenge. In this study, fine particles were collected during haze events under different pollution levels from September 5 to 112017 in Beijing,China.A nondestructive surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)technique was employed to investigate the morphology, chemical composition, and mixing state of the multiple components in the individual fine particles.Optical image and SERS spectral analysis results show that soot existing in the form of opaque material was predominant during clear periods(PM_(2.5)≤75μg/m^(3)).During polluted periods(PM_(2.5)>75μg/m^(3)),opaque particles mixed with transparent particles(nitrates and sulfates)were generally observed.Direct classical least squares analysis further identified the relative abundances of the three major components of the single particles:soot(69.18%),nitrates(28.71%),and sulfates(2.11%).A negative correlation was observed between the abundance of soot and the mass concentration of PM_(2.5).Furthermore,mapping analysis revealed that on hazy days,PM_(2.5)existed as a core-shell structure with soot surrounded by nitrates and sulfates. This mixing state analysis method for individual PM_(2.5)particles provides information regarding chemical composition and haze formation mechanisms, and has the potential to facilitate the formulation of haze prevention and control policies.Hui Chen Fengkui Duan Jingjing Du Ranhao Yin Lidan Zhu Jinlu Dong Kebin He Zhenli Sun Suhua Wang 2021Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,6:2

Calibration of K_(EC) Value in Acidic Red Soils with Fumigation-Extraction Method显示文摘Commonly used KEC value (0.45) of the fumigation-extraction (FE) method was obtained on the basis of temperate neutral soils. To ascertain its applicability to acidic red soils widespread in southern China and other subtropical regions, the KEC value was investigated based on 8 acidic red soils by in situ labelling of native soil microorganisms using 14C-labelled glucose. Realistic KEC value for red soils could be obtained by in situ 14C-labelling as long as an incubation period of 72 h is adopted after addition of 14C glucose to soil. The single KEC values for the eight red soils ranged from 0.27 to 0.35 and averaged 0.31. Lower KEC value obtained in red soils probably resulted from different soil quality, compared with other types of soil, which causes possible changes in microbial community structure and extractability of cellular component.Microbial biomass C contents of the eight red soils measured using a unique and constant KEC value of 0.45 decreased by 22.2%~40% in comparison to those using variable KEC values. The results suggest that microbial biomass C would be significantly underestimated using the present KEC value and a calibration of the KEC value is necessary for red soils.CHEN GUOCHAO and HE ZHENLI Department of Resource Science, College of Environmental and Resource Sciences, Huajiachi Campus, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310029 (China) 2002Pedosphere2002,12,1:1
