High miR-196a levels promote the oncogenic phenotype of colorectal cancer cells显示文摘AIM: To analyze the relevance of the microRNA miR-196a for colorectal oncogenesis. METHODS: The impact of miR-196a on the restriction targets HoxA7, HoxB8, HoxC8 and HoxD8 was analyzed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) after transient transfection of SW480 cancer cells. The miR-196a transcription profile in colorectal cancer samples, mucosa samples and diverse cancer cell lines was quantifi ed by RT-PCR. Transiently miR-196a-transfected colorectal cancer cells were used for diverse functional assays in vitro and for a xenograft lung metastasis model in vivo. RESULTS: HoxA7, HoxB8, HoxC8 and HoxD8 were restricted by miR-196a in a dose-dependent and gene-specific manner. High levels of miR-196a activated the AKT signaling pathway as indicated by increased phosphorylation of AKT. In addition, high levels of miR-196a promoted cancer cell detachment, migration, invasion and chemosensitivity towards platin derivatives but did not impact on proliferation or apoptosis. Furthermore, miR-196a increased the development of lung metastases in mice after tail vein injection. CONCLUSION: miR-196a exerts a pro-oncogenic influence in colorectal cancer.Carl Christoph Schimanski Kirsten Frerichs Fareed Rahman Martin Berger Hauke Lang Peter R Galle Markus Moehler Ines Gockel 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,17:40
Soft drinks consumption and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is a common clinical condition which is associated with metabolic syndrome in 70% of cases.Inappropriate dietary fat intake, excessive intake of soft drinks, insulin resistance and increased oxidative stress combine to increase free fatty acid delivery to the liver, and increased hepatic triglyceride accumulation contributes to fatty liver.Regular soft drinks have high fructose corn syrup which contains basic sugar building blocks, fructose 55% and glucose 45%.Soft drinks are the leading source of added sugar worldwide, and have been linked to obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. The consumption of soft drinks can increase the prevalence of NAFLD independently of metabolic syndrome.During regular soft drinks consumption, fat accumulates in the liver by the primary effect of fructose which increases lipogenesis, and in the case of diet soft drinks,by the additional contribution of aspartame sweetener and caramel colorant which are rich in advanced glycation end products that potentially increase insulin resistance and inflammation. This review emphasizes some hard facts about soft drinks, reviews fructose metabolism, and explains how fructose contributes to the development of obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and NAFLD.William Nseir Fares Nassar Nimer Assy 2010World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,21:20
PNPLA3 I148M polymorphism and progressive liver disease显示文摘The 148 Isoleucine to Methionine protein variant(I148M)of patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing 3(PNPLA3),a protein is expressed in the liver and is involved in lipid metabolism, has recently been identified as a major determinant of liver fat content.Several studies confirmed that the I148M variant predisposes towards the full spectrum of liver damage associated with fatty liver:from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis and progressive fibrosis.Furthermore, the I148M variant represents a major determinant of progression of alcohol related steatohepatitis to cirrhosis, and to influence fibrogenesis and related clinical outcomes in chronic hepatitis C virus hepatitis, and possibly chronic hepatitis B virus hepatitis, hereditary hemochromatosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. All in all, studies suggest that the I148M polymorphism may represent a general modifier of fibrogenesis in liver diseases.Remarkably, the effect of the I148M variant on fibrosis was independent of that on hepatic steatosis and inflammation, suggesting that it may affect both the quantity and quality of hepatic lipids and the biology of non-parenchymal liver cells besides hepatocytes, directly promoting fibrogenesis.Therefore,PNPLA3 is a key player in liver disease progression.Assessment of the I148M polymorphism will possibly inform clinical practice in the future, whereas the determination of the effect of the 148M variant will reveal mechanisms involved in hepatic fibrogenesis.Paola Dongiovanni Benedetta Donati Roberta Fares Rosa Lombardi Rosellina Margherita Mancina Stefano Romeo Luca Valenti 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,41:17
Impact of Fenton and ozone on oxidation of wastewater containing nitroaromatic compounds显示文摘Fenton and ozone treatment was investigated at laboratory scale for the degradation of aqueous solutions of nitrobenzene (NB). Effects of reactants concentration (O3, H2O2, and Fe(II)), temperature, and pH on NB degradation were monitored. Reaction kinetic of these processes was also assessed. A rapid reaction took place for Fenton process at higher initial concentration of H2O2, higher temperatures, and more acidic conditions (pH 3). Similarly, ozonation reaction exhibited rapid rates for higher ozone dose, higher temperatures, and more basic conditions (pH 11). Complete NB degradation in 65 min was achieved using Fenton process. The conditions of complete elimination of 100 mg/L of initial NB concentration, were 250 mg/L of H2O2 concentration, pH 3, and 10 mg/L of Fe(II) concentration. Under these conditions, 55% organic carbon elimination was achieved. Total organic carbon mineralization was attained in 240 min reaction time by Fenton process with 900 mg/L of H2O2 concentration, and 30 mg/L of Fe(II) concentration. Fenton reaction showed a pseudo-first order kinetic; the reaction rate constant was ranged from 0.0226 to 0.0658 min-1. Complete NB degradation was also achieved for an ozone dose of the order of 2.5 g/L. The ozonation was studied at different ozone doses, different initial pH (7–11) and at different temperatures (15–35°C ). NB ozonation kinetic was represented by a bi-molecular kinetic model which was reduced to pseudo-first order kinetic. The pseudo-first order reaction rate constant was determined to increase at 20°C from 0.004 to 0.020 min-1 as the used ozone increased from 0.4 to 1.9 g/L.Fares Al Momani Mo’ayyad Shawaqfah Ahmad Shawaqfeh Mohammad Al-Shannag 2008Journal of Environmental Sciences2008,20,6:13
More anxious than depressed:prevalence and correlates in a 15-nation study of anxiety disorders in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus显示文摘Background Anxiety disorder, one of the highly disabling, prevalent and common mental disorders, is known to be more prevalent in persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) than the general population, and the comorbid presence of anxiety disorders is known to have an impact on the diabetes outcome and the quality of life. However, the information on the type of anxiety disorder and its prevalence in persons with T2DM is limited. Aims To assess the prevalence and correlates of anxiety disorder in people with type 2 diabetes in different countries. Methods People aged 18-65 years with diabetes and treated in outpatient settings were recruited in 15 countries and underwent a psychiatric interview with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Demographic and medical record data were collected. Results A total of 3170 people with type 2 diabetes (56.2% women;with mean (SD) duration of diabetes 10.01 (7.0) years) participated. The overall prevalence of anxiety disorders in type 2 diabetic persons was 18%;however, 2.8% of the study population had more than one type of anxiety disorder. The most prevalent anxiety disorders were generalised anxiety disorder (8.1%) and panic disorder (5.1%). Female gender, presence of diabetic complications, longer duration of diabetes and poorer glycaemic control (HbA1c levels) were significantly associated with comorbid anxiety disorder. A higher prevalence of anxiety disorders was observed in Ukraine, Saudi Arabia and Argentina with a lower prevalence in Bangladesh and India. Conclusions Our international study shows that people with type 2 diabetes have a high prevalence of anxiety disorders, especially women, those with diabetic complications, those with a longer duration of diabetes and poorer glycaemic control. Early identification and appropriate timely care of psychiatric problems of people with type 2 diabetes is warranted.Santosh K Chaturvedi Shayanth Manche Gowda Helal Uddin Ahmed Fahad D Alosaimi Nicola Andreone Alexey Bobrov Viola Bulgari Giuseppe Carra Gianluca Castelnuovo Giovanni de Girolamo Tomasz Gondek Nikola Jovanovic Thummala Kamala Andrzej Ki Nebojsa Lalic Dusica Lecic-Tosevski Fareed Minhas Victoria Mutiso David Ndetei Golam Rabbani Suntibenchakul Somruk Sathyanarayana Srikanta Rizwan Taj Umberto Valentini Olivera Vukovic Wolfgang Wolwer Larry Cimino Arie Nouwen Cathy Lloyd Norman Sartorius 2019General Psychiatry2019,32,4:11
Effect of prophylactic clip placement following endoscopic mucosal resection of large colorectal lesions on delayed polypectomy bleeding: A meta-analysis显示文摘BACKGROUND The role of prophylactic clipping for the prevention of delayed polypectomy bleeding(DPB) remains unclear and conclusions from prior meta-analyses are limited due to the inclusion of variety of resection techniques and polyp sizes.AIM To conduct a meta-analysis on the effect of clipping on DPB following endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR) of colorectal lesions ≥ 20 mm.METHODS We performed a search of PubMed and the Cochrane library for studies comparing the effect of clipping vs no clipping on DPB following endoscopic resection. The Cochran Q test and I^2 were used to test for heterogeneity. Pooling was conducted using a random-effects model.RESULTS Thirteen studies with a total of 7794 polyps were identified, of which data was available on 1701 cases of EMR of lesions ≥ 20 mm. Prophylactic clipping was associated with a lower rate of DPB(1.4%) when compared to no clipping(5.2%)(pooled OR: 0.24, 95%CI: 0.12-0.50, P < 0.001) following EMR of lesions ≥ 20 mm.There was no significant heterogeneity among the studies(I^2 = 0%, P = 0.67).CONLUSION Prophylactic clipping may reduce DPB following EMR of large colorectal lesions.Future trials are needed to further identify risk factors and stratify high risk cases in order to implement a cost-effective preventive strategy.Fares Ayoub Donevan R Westerveld Justin J Forde Christopher E Forsmark Peter V Draganov Dennis Yang 2019World Journal of Gastroenterology2019,25,18:9
Noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring of septic shock in children显示文摘Septic shock in children is associated with high mortality and morbidity. Its management is time-sensitive and must be aggressive and target oriented. The use of clinical assessment alone to differentiate between cold and warm shock and to select the appropriate inotropic and vasoactive medications is fraught with errors. Semiquantitative and quantitative assessment of the preload, contractility and afterload using non-invasive tools has been suggested,in conjunction with clinical and laboratory assessment,to direct shock management and select between vasopressors, vasodilators and inotropes or a combination of these drugs. This review aims to describe non-invasive tools to assess the hemodynamic status in septic shock including echocardiography,trans-thoracic/trans-esophageal Doppler and electrical cardiometry. As septic shock is a dynamic condition that changes markedly overtime, frequent or continuous measurement of the cardiac output(CO),systemic vascular resistance(SVR) and other hemodynamic parameters using the above-mentioned tools is essential to personalize the treatment and adapt it over time. The different combinations of blood pressure,CO and SVR serve as a pathophysiological framework to manage fl-uid therapy and titrate inotropic and vasoactive drugs. Near infrared spectroscopy is introduced as a noninvasive method to measure end organ perfusion and assess the response to treatment.Emad Mohamed Fathi Hassib Narchi Fares Chedid 2018World Journal of Methodology2018,8,1:7
Review of evolution of tunnel position in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction显示文摘Anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) rupture is one of the commonest knee sport injuries. The annual incidence of the ACL injury is between 100000-200000 in the United States. Worldwide around 400000 ACL reconstructions are performed in a year. The goal of ACL reconstruction is to restore the normal knee anatomy and kinesiology. The tibial and femoral tunnel placements are of primordial importance in achieving this outcome. Otherfactors that influence successful reconstruction are types of grafts, surgical techniques and rehabilitation programmes. A comprehensive understanding of ACL anatomy has led to the development of newer techniques supplemented by more robust biological and mechanical concepts. In this review we are mainly focussing on the evolution of tunnel placement in ACL reconstruction, focusing on three main categories, i.e., anatomical, biological and clinical outcomes. The importance of tunnel placement in the success of ACL reconstruction is well researched. Definite clinical and functional data is lacking to establish the superiority of the single or double bundle reconstruction technique. While there is a trend towards the use of anteromedial portals for femoral tunnel placement, their clinical superiority over trans-tibial tunnels is yet to be established.Faizal Rayan Shashi Kumar Nanjayan Conal Quah Darryl Ramoutar Sujith Konan Fares S Haddad 2015World Journal of Orthopedics2015,6,2:7
Non-invasive assessment of choledocholithiasis in patients with gallstones and abnormal liver function显示文摘AIM:To find a non-invasive strategy for detecting choledocholithiasis before cholecystectomy, with an acceptable negative rate of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.METHODS:All patients with symptomatic gallstones were included in the study.Patients with abnormal liver functions and common bile duct abnormalities on ultrasound were referred for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.Patients with normal ultrasoundwere referred to magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography. All those who had a negative magnetic resonance or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy with intraoperative cholangiography.RESULTS:Seventy-eight point five percent of patients had laparoscopic cholecystectomy directly with no further investigations.Twenty-one point five percent had abnormal liver function tests,of which 52.8%had normal ultrasound results. This strategy avoided unnecessary magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography in 47.2%of patients with abnormal liver function tests with a negative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography rate of 10%.It also avoided un-necessary endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in 35.2%of patients with abnormal liver function.CONCLUSION:This strategy reduces the cost of the routine use of magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography,in the diagnosis and treatment of common bile duct stones before laparoscopic cholecystectomy.Bilal O Al-Jiffry Abdeen Elfateh Tariq Chundrigar Bassem Othman Owaid AlMalki Fares Rayza Hashem Niyaz Hesham Elmakhzangy Mohammed Hatem 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,35:6
Effect of silica fume on the fresh and hardened properties of fly ash-based self-compacting geopolymer concrete显示文摘The effect of silica fume on the fresh and hardened properties of fly ash-based self-compacting geopolymer concrete(SCGC) was investigated in this paper. The work focused on the concrete mixes with a fixed water-to-geopolymer solid(W/Gs) ratio of 0.33 by mass and a constant total binder content of 400 kg/m3.The mass fractions of silica fume that replaced fly ash in this research were 0wt%,5wt%,10wt%,and 15wt%.The workability-related fresh properties of SCGC were assessed through slump flow,V-funnel,and L-box test methods.Hardened concrete tests were limited to compressive, splitting tensile and flexural strengths, all of which were measured at the age of 1,7,and 28 d after 48-h oven curing. The results indicate that the addition of silica fume as a partial replacement of fly ash results in the loss of workability;nevertheless, the mechanical properties of hardened SCGC are significantly improved by incorporating silica fume, especially up to 10wt%.Applying this percentage of silica fume results in 4.3% reduction in the slump flow;however,it increases the compressive strength by 6.9%,tensile strength by 12.8% and flexural strength by 11.5%.Fareed Ahmed Memon Muhd Fadhil Nuruddin Nasir Shafiq 2013International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2013,20,2:6
Magnetically treated water irrigation effect on turnip seed germination, seedling growth and enzymatic activities显示文摘Pre-sowing magnetic field seed treatment effects on biological characteristics of vegetables and crops have been studied well. However, studies reporting irrigation with magnetically treated water are scanty. Therefore, the effect of irrigation with magnetically treated water on turnip seed germination, seedling growth and enzymatic activities was evaluated. The tap water was treated at 211 mT for 30,45 and 60 min and used for irrigation of turnip seed and seedlings.Uniform and healthy turnip seed was sown under randomized complete block design(RCBD).The germination, emergence rate index, vigor index I and vigor index II increased up to 28.33%,11.54%,57.59%and 32.26%,respectively.The growth parameters such as seedling lengths, fresh&dry weights, chlorophyll content were also enhanced in response of irrigation with magnetically treated water. The seedlings irrigated with magnetically treated water showed 28.92%,11.36%and 14.76%higher protein content, alpha amylase and protease activities, respectively vs control. Results revealed that irrigation with magnetically treated water has potential to improve turnip germination, seedling growth and enzymatic activities and this study is also extendable to other vegetables and crops for the improvement of germination and growth.Zia ul Haq Munawar Iqbal Yasir Jamil Hafeez Anwar Ayesha Younis Muhammad Arif M.Zeshan Fareed Fida Hussain 2016Information Processing in Agriculture2016,3,2:5
Molecular principles of metastasis: a hallmark of cancer revisited显示文摘Metastasis is the hallmark of cancer that is responsible for the greatest number of cancer-related deaths.Yet,it remains poorly understood. The continuous evolution of cancer biology research and the emergence of new paradigms in the study of metastasis have revealed some of the molecular underpinnings of this dissemination process. The invading tumor cell,on its way to the target site, interacts with other proteins and cells.Recognition of these interactions improved the understanding of some of the biological principles of the metastatic cell that govern its mobility and plasticity.Communication with the tumor microenvironment allows invading cancer cells to overcome stromal challenges, settle, and colonize. These characteristics of cancer cells are driven by genetic and epigenetic modifications within the tumor cell itself and its microenvironment.Establishing the biological mechanisms of the metastatic process is crucial in finding open therapeutic windows for successful interventions. In this review, the authors explore the recent advancements in the field of metastasis and highlight the latest insights that contribute to shaping this hallmark of cancer.Jawad Fares Mohamad Y.Fares Hussein H.Khachfe Hamza A.Salhab Youssef Fares 2020Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2020,5,1:5
Procalcitonin, and cytokines document a dynamic inflammatory state in non-infected cirrhotic patients with ascites显示文摘AIM:To quantitate the simultaneous serum and ascitic fluid levels of procalcitonin and inflammatory markers in cirrhotics with and without ascites.METHODS:A total of 88 consecutive severe cirrhotic patients seen in a large city hospital liver clinic were studied and divided into two groups, those with and without ascites.Group 1 consisted of 41 cirrhotic patients with massive ascites,as demonstrated by necessity for therapeutic large-volume paracentesis.Group 2consisted of 47 cirrhotic patients without any clinically documented ascites to include either a recent abdominal computed tomography scan or ultrasound study.Serum and ascitic fluid levels of an array of inflammatory markers, including procalcitonin, were measured and compared to each other and a normal plasma panel(NPP).RESULTS:The values for inflammatory markers assayed in the serum of Groups 1 and 2,and ascitic fluid of the Group 1.The plasma levels of the inflammatory cytokines interleukin(IL)-2,IL-4,IL-6,IL-8,interferon gamma(IFNγ)and epidermal growth factor(EGF)were all significantly greater in the serum of Group 1as compared to that of the serum obtained from the Group 2 subjects(all P<0.05).There were significantly greater serum levels of IL-6,IL-8,IL-10,monocyte chemoattractant protein-1,tumor necrosis factor-α,vascular endothelial growth factor and EGF when comparing Group 2 to the NPP.There was no significant difference for IL-1A,IL-1B,IL-2,IL-4 and IFNγlevels between these two groups.Serum procalcitonin levels were increased in cirrhotics with ascites compared to cirrhotics without ascites, but serum levels were similar to ascites levels within the ascites group.Furthermore, many of these cytokines, but not procalcitonin, demonstrate an ascites-to-serum gradient.Serum procalcitonin does not demonstrate any significant difference segregated by liver etiology in the ascites group;but ascitic fluid procalcitonin is elevated significantly in car-diac cirrhosis/miscellaneous subgroup compared to the hepatitis C virus and alcoholic cirrhosis subgroups.CONCLUSION:Procalcitonin in the ascitic fluid, but not in the serum, differentiates between cirrhotic subgroup reflecting the dynamic interplay of ascites, bacterial translocation and the peri-peritoneal cytokine.Bashar M Attar Christopher M Moore Magdalena George Nicolae Ion-Nedelcu Rafael Turbay Annamma Zachariah Guiliano Ramadori Jawed Fareed David H Van Thiel 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,9:4
Neurally adjusted ventilator assist in very low birth weight infants:Current status显示文摘Continuous improvements in perinatal care have resultedin increased survival of premature infants.Their immature lungs are prone to injury with mechanical ventilation and this may develop into chronic lung disease(CLD) or bronchopulmonary dysplasia.Strategies to minimize the risk of lung injury have been developed and include improved antenatal management(education, regionalization, steroids, and antibiotics),exogenous surfactant administration and reduction of barotrauma by using exclusive or early noninvasive ventilatory support. The most frequently used mode of assisted ventilation is pressure support ventilation that may lead to patientventilator asynchrony that is associated with poor outcome.Ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction or disuse atrophy of diaphragm fibers may also occur. This has led to the development of new ventilation modes including neurally adjusted ventilatory assist(NAVA).This ventilation mode is controlled by electrodes embedded within a nasogastric catheter which detect the electrical diaphragmatic activity(Edi) and transmit it to trigger the ventilator in synchrony with the patient's own respiratory efforts. This permits the patient to control peak inspiratory pressure, mean airway pressure and tidal volume.Back up pressure control(PC) is provided when there is no Edi signal and no pneumatic trigger.Compared with standard conventional ventilation,NAVA improves blood gas regulation with lower peak inspiratory pressure and oxygen requirements in preterm infants.NAVA is safe mode of ventilation. The majority of studies have shown no significant adverse events in neonates ventilated with NAVA nor a difference in the rate of intraventricular hemorrhage, pneumothorax,or necrotizing enterocolitis when compared to conventional ventilation.Future large size randomized controlled trials should be established to compare NAVA with volume targeted and pressure controlled ventilation in newborns with mature respiratory drive. Most previous studies and trials were not sufficiently large and did not include longterm patient oriented outcomes.Multicenter, randomized, outcome trials are needed to determine whether NAVA is effective in avoiding intubation, facilitating extubation, decreasing time of ventilation, reducing the incidence ofCLD,decreasing length of stay, and improving long-term outcomes such as the duration of ventilation, length of hospital stay, rate of pneumothorax,CLD and other major complications of prematurity. In order to prevent barotrauma, next generations of NAVA equipment for neonatal use should enable automatic setting of ventilator parameters in the backup PC mode based on the values generated by NAVA.They should also include an upper limit to the inspiratory time as in conventional ventilation. The manufacturers of Edi catheters should produce smaller sizes available for extreme low birth weight infants.Newly developed ventilators should also include leak compensation and high frequency ventilation.A peripheral flow sensor is also essential to the proper delivery of all modes of conventional ventilation as well as NAVA.Hassib Narchi Fares Chedid 2015World Journal of Methodology2015,5,2:4
Randomised controlled trial of triclosan coated vs uncoated sutures in primary hip and knee arthroplasty显示文摘BACKGROUND Triclosan-coated vicryl plus suture(Ethicon, Inc.) was developed to reduce microbial colonisation during surgical procedures. However, its effect on wound healing and surgical site infections remain unclear after hip and knee arthroplasty surgery.AIM To determine the effect of triclosan-coated sutures(TCS) vs non-coated sutures on wound healing, following primary hip and knee arthroplasties.METHODS A single-centred, double-blind randomised controlled trial(RCT) was undertaken. We randomly allocated patients to receive either the triclosan-coated sutures(TCS vicryl plus) or non-coated sutures(NCS vicryl) during the closure of unilateral primary hip and knee arthroplasties. We utilised the ASEPSIS wound scoring system to evaluate wound healing for the first 6 weeks post-operatively.RESULTS One hundred and fifty patients undergoing primary total hip or knee arthroplasty over a one-year period were included. Eighty-one were randomised to the TCS group and 69 to the NCS group. Despite no statistically significant difference in the ASEPSIS scores among the study groups(P = 0.75), sensitivity analysis using the Mann Whitney test(P = 0.036) as well as assessment of the wound complications at 6 weeks follow up, demonstrated significantly higher wound complication rates in the TCS group(8 vs 1, P = 0.03).CONCLUSION No clear advantage was demonstrated for using the TCS. However, larger multicentred RCTs are required to validate their use in hip and knee arthroplasty surgery.Mohamed Sukeik David George Ayman Gabr Rami Kallala Peter Wilson Fares Sami Haddad 2019World Journal of Orthopedics2019,10,7:4
Artificial intelligence for satellite communication: A review显示文摘Satellite communication offers the prospect of service continuity over uncovered and under-covered areas, service ubiquity, and service scalability. However, several challenges must first be addressed to realize these benefits,as the resource management, network control, network security, spectrum management, and energy usage of satellite networks are more challenging than that of terrestrial networks.Meanwhile, artificial intelligence(AI),including machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning, has been steadily growing as a research field and has shown successful results in diverse applications, including wireless communication. In particular, the application of AI to a wide variety of satellite communication aspects has demonstrated excellent potential, including beam-hopping,anti-jamming,network traffic forecasting, channel modeling, telemetry mining, ionospheric scintillation detecting, interference managing, remote sensing, behavior modeling,space-air-ground integrating, and energy managing. This work thus provides a general overview of AI,its diverse sub-fields,and its state-of-the-art algorithms.Several challenges facing diverse aspects of satellite communication systems are then discussed, and their proposed and potential AI-based solutions are presented. Finally,an outlook of field is drawn, and future steps are suggested.Fares Fourati Mohamed-Slim Alouini 2021Intelligent and Converged Networks2021,2,3:4
Conjugated hyperbilirubinemia presenting in first fourteen days in term neonates显示文摘AIM To describe the etiology and characteristics of earlyonset conjugated hyperbilirubinemia(ECHB) presenting within 14 d of life in term neonates.METHODS Retrospective review was performed of term infants up to 28-d-old who presented with conjugated hyperbilirubinemia(CHB) at a tertiary center over a 5-year period from January 2010 to December 2014. CHB is defined as conjugated bilirubin(CB) fraction greater than 15% of total bilirubin and CB greater or equal to 25 μmol/L. ECHB is defined as CHB detected within 14 d of life. 'Late-onset' CHB(LCHB) is detected at 15-28 d of life and served as the comparison group.RESULTS Total of 117 patients were recruited: 65 had ECHB, 52had LCHB. Neonates with ECHB were more likely to be clinically unwell(80.0% vs 42.3%, P < 0.001) and associated with non-hepatic causes(73.8% vs 44.2%, P = 0.001) compared to LCHB. Multifactorial liver injury(75.0%) and sepsis(17.3%) were the most common causes of ECHB in clinically unwell infants, majority(87.5%) had resolution of CHB with no progression to chronic liver disease. Inborn errors of metabolism were rare(5.8%) but associated with high mortality(100%) in our series. In the subgroup of clinically well infants(n = 13) with ECHB, biliary atresia(BA) was the most common diagnosis(61.5%), all presented initially with normal stools and decline in total bilirubin but with persistent CHB. CONCLUSION Secondary hepatic injury is the most common reason for ECHB. BA presents with ECHB in well infants without classical symptoms of pale stools and deep jaundice.Fang Kuan Chiou Christina Ong Kong Boo Phua Fares Chedid Ajmal Kader 2017World Journal of Hepatology2017,9,26:3
Evaluation of chemopreventive effect of Fumaria indica against N-nitrosodiethylamine and CCl_4-induced hepatocellular carcinoma in Wistar rats显示文摘Objective:To investigation the chemopreventive potential of Fumaria indica(F.indica) extract(FIE) on N-nitrosodiethylamine and CCl4-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in Wislar rats. Methods:The experimental animals were divided into six groups(n=6).Hepatocellular carcinoma was induced by single intraperitoneal injection of N-nitrosodiethylamine(NDEA) in normal saline at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight followed by weekly subcutaneous injections of CCl4(3 mL/kg/week) for 6 weeks,as the promoter of carcinogenic effect. After administration of the carcinogen,200 and 400 mg/kg of FIE were administered orally once a day throughout the study. At the end of 20 weeks, the body weight, liver weight and relative liver weight were measured. The percentage of nodule incidence and liver cancer markers such as aspartate transaminase(AST),alanine transaminase(ALT),alkaline phosphatase(ALP),γ-glutamyl transferase(γ-GT),total bilirubin level(TBL),α-feto protein(AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen were estimated along with histopathological investigation in experimental groups of rats. Results:Obtained results demonstrated that the cotreatment with FIE significantly prevented the decrease of the body weight and also increased in relative liver weight caused by NDEA. The treatment with FIE significantly reduced the nodule incidence and nodule multiplicity in the rats after NDEA administration. The levels of liver cancer markers such as AST,ALT,ALP,γ-glutamyl transferase,TBL,AFP and carcinoembryonic antigen were substantially increased by NDEA treatment. However,FIE treatment significantly reduced the liver injury and restored the entire liver cancer markers.Histological observations of liver tissues too correlated with the biochemical observations. Conclusions:These finding powerfully supports that F.indica exert chemopreventive effect by suppressing the tumor burden and restoring the activities of hepatic cancer marker enzymes on NDEA and CCl4-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in Wistar rats.Talib Hussain Hefazat H Siddiqui Sheeba Fareed M Vijayakumar Chandana V Rao 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,8:3
Impact of cytokine storm and systemic inflammation on liver impairment patients infected by SARS-CoV-2:Prospective therapeutic challenges显示文摘Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is a devastating worldwide pandemic infection caused by a severe acute respiratory syndrome namely coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)that is associated with a high spreading and mortality rate.On the date this review was written,SARS-CoV-2 infected about 96 million people and killed about 2 million people.Several arguments disclosed the high mortality of COVID-19 due to acute respiratory distress syndrome or change in the amount of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2)receptor expression or cytokine storm strength production. In a similar pattern, hepatic impairment patients co-infected with SARS-CoV-2 exhibited overexpression of ACE2 receptors and cytokine storm overwhelming, which worsens the hepatic impairment and increases the mortality rate.In this review, the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on hepatic impairment conditions we overviewed.Besides,we focused on the recent studies that indicated cytokine storm as well as ACE2 as the main factors for high COVID-19 spreading and mortality while hinting at the potential therapeutic strategies.Fares E M Ali Zuhair M Mohammedsaleh Mahmoud M Ali Osama M Ghogar 2021World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,15:3
