Climate change, water resources and sustainable development in the arid and semi-arid lands of Central Asia in the past 30 years显示文摘The countries of Central Asia are collectively known as the five '-stans': Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. In recent times, the Central Asian region has been affected by the shrinkage of the Aral Sea, widespread desertification, soil salinization, biodiversity loss, frequent sand storms, and many other ecological disasters. This paper is a review article based upon the collection, identification and collation of previous studies of environmental changes and regional developments in Central Asia in the past 30 years. Most recent studies have reached a consensus that the temperature rise in Central Asia is occurring faster than the global average. This warming trend will not only result in a higher evaporation in the basin oases, but also to a significant retreat of glaciers in the mountainous areas. Water is the key to sustainable development in the arid and semi-arid regions in Central Asia. The uneven distribution, over consumption, and pollution of water resources in Central Asia have caused severe water supply problems, which have been affecting regional harmony and development for the past 30 years. The widespread and significant land use changes in the 1990 s could be used to improve our understanding of natural variability and human interaction in the region. There has been a positive trend of trans-border cooperation among the Central Asian countries in recent years. International attention has grown and research projects have been initiated to provide water and ecosystem protection in Central Asia. However, the agreements that have been reached might not be able to deliver practical action in time to prevent severe ecological disasters. Water management should be based on hydrographic borders and ministries should be able to make timely decisions without political intervention. Fully integrated management of water resources, land use and industrial development is essential in Central Asia. The ecological crisis should provide sufficient motivation to reach a consensus on unified water management throughout the region.YU Yang PI Yuanyue YU Xiang TA Zhijie SUN Lingxiao Markus DISSE ZENG Fanjiang LI Yaoming CHEN Xi YU Ruide 2019Journal of Arid Land2019,11,1:20
Perspectives on the Application of Genome-Editing Technologies in Crop Breeding显示文摘Most conventional and modern crop-improvement methods exploit natural or artificially induced genetic variations and require laborious characterization of the progenies of multiple generations derived from time-consuming genetic crosses.Genome-editing systems,in contrast, provide the means to rapidly modify genomes in a precise and predictable way, making it possible to introduce improvements directly into elite varieties. Here,we describe the range of applications available to agricultural researchers using existing genome-editing tools. In addition to providing examples of genome-editing applications in crop breeding,we discuss the technical and social challenges faced by breeders using genome-editing tools for crop improvement.Kai Hua Jinshan Zhang Jose Ramon Botella Changle Ma Fanjiang Kong Baohui Liu Jian-Kang Zhu 2019Molecular Plant2019,12,8:19
Regulation of the water status in three co-occurring phreatophytes at the southern fringe of the Taklamakan Desert显示文摘Aims We investigated the regulation of the water status in three predominant perennial C3 phreatophytes(Alhagi sparsifolia,Populus euphratica,Tamarix ramosissima)at typical sites of their occurrence at the southern fringe of the hyperarid Taklamakan Desert(north-west China). Methods In the foreland of the river oasis of Qira(Cele),we determined meteorological variables, plant biomass production, plant water potentials(WL)and the water flux through the plants. We calculated the hydraulic conductance on the flow path from the soil to the leaves(kSL)and tested the effects of kSL,WL and the leaf-to-air difference in the partial pressure of water vapour(Dw)on stomatal regulation using regression analyses.Important Findings Despite high values of plant water potential at the point of turgor loss, all plants sustained WL at levels that were high enough to maintain transpiration throughout the growing season. In A.sparsifolia, stomatal resistance(rs;related to leaf area or leaf mass)was most closely correlated with kSL;whereas in P.euphratica,~70%of the variation in rs was explained by Dw.In T.ramosissima, leaf area-related rs was significantly correlated with WL and kSL.The regulation mechanisms are in accordance with the growth patterns and the occurrence of the species in relation to their distance to the ground water.Frank M.Thomas Andrea Foetzki Dirk Gries Helge Bruelheide Xiangyi Li Fanjiang Zeng Ximing Zhang 2008Journal of Plant Ecology2008,1,4:13
Responses of root growth of Alhagi sparsifolia Shap. (Fabaceae) to different simulated groundwater depths in the southern fringe of the Taklimakan Desert, China显示文摘Alhagi sparsifolia Shap. (Fabaceae) is a spiny, perennial herb. The species grows in the salinized, arid regions in North China. This study investigated the response characteristics of the root growth and the distribution of one-year-old A. sparsifolia seedlings to different groundwater depths in controlled plots. The ecological adaptability of the root systems of A. sparsifolia seedlings was examined using the artificial digging method. Results showed that: (1) A. sparsifolia seedlings adapted to an increase in groundwater depth mainly through increasing the penetration depth and growth rate of vertical roots. The vertical roots grew rapidly when soil moisture content reached 3%-9%, but slowly when soil moisture content was 13%-20%. The vertical roots stopped growing when soil moisture content reached 30% (the critical soil moisture point). (2) The morphological plasticity of roots is an important strategy used by A. sparsifolia seedlings to obtain water and adapt to dry soil conditions. When the groundwater table was shallow, horizontal roots quickly expanded and tillering increased in order to compete for light resources, whereas when the groundwater table was deeper, vertical roots developed quickly to exploit space in the deeper soil layers. (3) The decrease in groundwater depth was probably responsible for the root distribution in the shallow soil layers. Root biomass and surface area both decreased with soil depth. One strategy of A. sparsifolia seedlings in dealing with the increase in groundwater depth is to increase root biomass in the deep soil layers. The relationship between the root growth/distribution of A. sparsifolia and the depth of groundwater table can be used as guidance for harvesting A. sparsifolia biomass and managing water resources for forage grasses. It is also of ecological significance as it reveals how desert plants adapt to arid environments.FanJiang ZENG Cong SONG HaiFeng GUO Bo LIU WeiCheng LUO DongWei GUI Stefan ARNDT DaLi GUO 2013Journal of Arid Land2013,5,2:13
Molecular mechanisms for the photoperiodic regulation of flowering in soybean显示文摘Photoperiodic flowering is one of the most important factors affecting regional adaptation and yield in soybean(Glycine max). Plant adaptation to long-day conditions at higher latitudes requires early flowering and a reduction or loss of photoperiod sensitivity;adaptation to short-day conditions at lower latitudes involves delayed flowering, which prolongs vegetative growth for maximum yield potential. Due to the influence of numerous major loci and quantitative trait loci(QTLs), soybean has broad adaptability across latitudes. Forward genetic approaches have uncovered the molecular basis for several of these major maturity genes and QTLs. Moreover, the molecular characterization of orthologs of Arabidopsis thaliana flowering genes has enriched our understanding of the photoperiodic flowering pathway in soybean. Building on early insights into the importance of the photoreceptor phytochrome A, several circadian clock components have been integrated into the genetic network controlling flowering in soybean: E1, a repressor of FLOWERING LOCUS T orthologs, plays a central role in this network. Here, we provide an overview of recent progress in elucidating photoperiodic flowering in soybean, how it contributes to our fundamental understanding of flowering time control, and how this information could be used for molecular design and breeding of high-yielding soybean cultivars.Xiaoya Lin Baohui Liu James LWeller Jun Abe Fanjiang Kong 2021Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2021,63,6:11
Soybean AP1 homologs control flowering time and plant height显示文摘Flowering time and plant height are key agronomic traits that directly affect soybean(Glycine max)yield.APETALA1(AP1)functions as a class A gene in the ABCE model for floral organ development, helping to specify carpel, stamen, petal, and sepal identities. There are four AP1 homologs in soybean, all of which are mainly expressed in the shoot apex. Here,we used clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats(CRISPR)–CRISPR-associated protein 9 technology to generate a homozygous quadruple mutant,gmap1,with loss-of-function mutations in all four GmAP1 genes.Under short-day(SD)conditions,the gmap1 quadruple mutant exhibited delayed flowering, changes in flower morphology, and increased node number and internode length, resulting in plants that were taller than the wild type.Conversely, overexpression of GmAP1a resulted in early flowering and reduced plant height compared to the wild type under SD conditions. The gmap1 mutant and the overexpression lines also exhibited altered expression of several genes related to flowering and gibberellic acid metabolism, thereby providing insight into the role of GmAP1 in the regulatory networks controlling flowering time and plant height in soybean.Increased node number is the trait with the most promise for enhancing soybean pod number and grain yield. Therefore, the mutant alleles of the four AP1 homologs described here will be invaluable for molecular breeding of improved soybean yield.Liyu Chen Haiyang Nan Lingping Kong Lin Yue Hui Yang Qingsong Zhao Chao Fang Haiyang Li Qun Cheng Sijia Lu Fanjiang Kong Baohui Liu Lidong Dong 2020Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2020,62,12:9
DELLA and EDS1 Form a Feedback Regulatory Module to Fine-Tune Plant Growth-Defense Tradeoff in Arabidopsis显示文摘Plants maintain a dynamic balance between growth and defense, and optimize allocation of resources for survival under constant pathogen infections. However, the underlying molecular regulatory mechanisms, especially in response to biotrophic bacterial infection, remain elusive. Here,we demonstrate that DELLA proteins and EDS1,an essential resistance regulator, form a central module modulating plant growth-defense tradeoffs via direct interaction. When infected by Pst DC3000,EDS1 rapidly promotes salicylic acid(SA)biosynthesis and resistance-related gene expression to prime defense response, while pathogen infection stabilizes DELLA proteins RGA and RGL3 to restrict growth in a partially EDS1-dependent manner, which facilitates plants to develop resistance to pathogens. However, the increasingly accumulated DELLAs interact with EDS1 to suppress SA overproduction and excessive resistance response.Taken together, our findings reveal a DELLA-EDS1-mediated feedback regulatory loop by which plants maintain the subtle balance between growth and defense to avoid excessive growth or defense in response to constant biotrophic pathogen attack.Yuge Li Yuhua Yang Yilong Hu Hailun Liu Ming He Ziyin Yang Fanjiang Kong Xu Liu Xingliang Hou 2019Molecular Plant2019,12,11:8
Characteristics of Wind Erosion and Deposition in Oasis-desert Ecotone in Southern Margin of Tarim Basin,China显示文摘The oasis-desert ecotone is a fragile ecological zone that is affected both by oasis and desert conditions. To understand the impact of the differences in wind power, and the influence of wind erosion and deposition on the ecotone, meteorological data and contemporaneous wind erosion and deposition data were collected on the southern margin of Tarim Basin with serious sand-blown hazards. The wind velocity, average wind velocity, sand drift potential(DP), resultant sand drift potential(RDP), and sand transportation rate decrease significantly and successively across four landscape types with increasing vegetation coverage(VC). Flat surfaces and areas of shifting sandy ground experience intense wind erosion with fast movement of mobile sand dunes; semi-fixed sand areas experience extensive wind deposition but only slight wind erosion; and fixed sand areas experience only slight wind erosion and deposition. Volume of wind erosion on bare newly reclaimed farmland is up to 6.96 times that of bare shifting sandy ground. Wind erosion volume per unit area and VC follow an exponential function relationship in natural conditions, while wind deposition volume per unit area does not conform to any functions which has close relationship with vary topography and arrangement patterns of vegetation besides for VC. The results indicate that the volume of wind erosion has a close correlation with VC, and different types and distribution patterns of topography and vegetation also profoundly influence the wind deposition volume in the field, and underground water tables in different landscape types control the plant community distribution.MAO Donglei LEI Jiaqiang ZENG Fanjiang RAHMUTULLA Zaynulla WANG Cui ZHOU Jie 2014Chinese Geographical Science2014,24,6:6
Parallel selection of distinct Tof5 alleles drove the adaptation of cultivated and wild soybean to high latitudes显示文摘Photoperiod responsiveness is a key factor limiting the geographic distribution of cultivated soybean and its wild ancestor. In particular, the genetic basis of the adaptation in wild soybean remains poorly understood. In this study,by combining whole-genome resequencing and genome-wide association studies we identified a novel locus,Time of Flowering 5(Tof5),which promotes flowering and enhances adaptation to high latitudes in both wild and cultivated soybean.By genomic, genetic and transgenic analyses we showed that Tof5 en-codes a homolog of Arabidopsis thaliana FRUITFULL(FUL).Importantly, further analyses suggested that different alleles of Tof5 have undergone parallel selection. The Tof5H1 allele was strongly selected by humans after the early domestication of cultivated soybean, while Tof5H2 allele was naturally selected in wild soybean, and in each case facilitating adaptation to high latitudes. Moreover,we found that the key flowering repressor E1 suppresses the transcription of Tof5 by binding to its promoter. In turn,Tof5 physically associates with the promoters of two important FLOWERING LOCUS T(FT),FT2a and FT5a,to upregulate their transcription and promote flowering under long photoperiods.Collectively, ourfindings provide insights into how wild soybean adapted to high latitudes through natural selection and indicate that cultivated soybean underwent changes in the same gene but evolved a distinct allele that was artificially selected after domestication.Lidong Dong Qun Cheng Chao Fang Lingping Kong Hui Yang Zhihong Hou Yongli Li Haiyang Nan Yuhang Zhang Qingshan Chen Chunbao Zhang Kun Kou Tong Su Lingshuang Wang Shichen Li Haiyang Li Xiaoya Lin Yang Tang Xiaohui Zhao Sijia Lu Baohui Liu Fanjiang Kong 2022Molecular Plant2022,15,2:5
Root characteristics of Alhagi sparsifolia seedlings in response to water supplement in an arid region, northwestern China显示文摘The effect of variation in water supply on woody seedling growth in arid environments remain poorly known. The subshrub Alhagi sparsifolia Shap.(Leguminosae),distributed in the southern fringe of the Taklimakan Desert,Xinjiang, northwestern China, has evolved deep roots and is exclusively dependent on groundwater, and performs a crucial role for the local ecological safety. In the Cele oasis,we studied the responses of A.sparsifolia seedling roots to water supplement at 10 and 14 weeks under three irrigation treatments(none water supply of 0 m3/m2(NW),middle water supply of 0.1 m3/m2(MW),and high water supply of 0.2 m3/m2(HW)).The results showed that the variations of soil water content(SWC) significantly influenced the root growth of A.sparsifolia seedlings. The leaf area, basal diameter and crown diameter were significantly higher in the HW treatment than in the other treatments. The biomass, root surface area(RSA),root depth and relative growth rate(RGR) of A.sparsifolia roots were all significantly higher in the NW treatment than in the HW and MW treatments at 10 weeks. However, these root parameters were significantly lower in the NW treatment than in the other treatments at 14 weeks. When SWC continued to decline as the experiment went on(until less than 8% gravimetric SWC),the seedlings still showed drought tolerance through morphological and physiological responses, but root growth suffered serious water stress compared to better water supply treatments.According to our study, keeping a minimum gravimetric SWC of 8% might be important for the growth and establishment of A.sparsifolia during the early growth stage. These results will not only enrich our knowledge of the responses of woody seedlings to various water availabilities, but also provide a new insight to successfully establish and manage A.sparsifolia in arid environments, further supporting the sustainable development of oases.DongWei GUI FanJiang ZENG Zhen LIU Bo ZHANG 2013Journal of Arid Land2013,5,4:5
Modulation of nitrate-induced phosphate response by the MYB transcription factor RLI1/HINGE1 in the nucleus显示文摘The coordinated utilization of nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)is vital for plants to maintain nutrient balance and achieve optimal growth.Previously,we revealed a mechanism by which nitrate induces genes for phosphate utilization;this mechanism depends on NRT1.1B-facilitated degradation of cytoplasmic SPX4,which in turn promotes cytoplasmic-nuclear shuttling of PHR2,the central transcription factor of phosphate signaling, and triggers the nitrate-induced phosphate response(NIPR)and N-P coordinated utilization in rice.In this study,we unveiled a fine-tuning mechanism of NIPR in the nucleus regulated by Highly Induced by Nitrate Gene 1(HINGE1,also known as RLI1),a MYB-transcription factor closely related to PHR2.RLI1/HINGE1,which is transcriptionally activated by PHR2 under nitrate induction, can directly activate the expression of phosphate starvation-induced genes.More importantly,RLI1/HINGE1 competes with PHR2 for binding to its repressor proteins in the nucleus(SPX proteins),and consequently releases PHR2 to further enhance phosphate response.Therefore,RLI1/HINGE1 amplifies the phosphate response in the nucleus downstream of the cytoplasmic SPX4-PHR2 cascade, thereby enabling fine-tuning of N-P balance when nitrate supply is sufficient.Zhihua Zhang Zhao Li Wei Wang Zhimin Jiang Liping Guo Xiaohan Wang Yangwen Qian Xiahe Huang Yongqiang Liu Xiujie Liu Yahong Liu Aifu Li Yu Yan Junpeng Xie Shouyun Cao Stanislav Kopriva Legong Li Fanjiang Kong Baohui Liu Yingchun Wang Bin Hu Chengcai Chu 2021Molecular Plant2021,14,3:4
The nodulation and nyctinastic leaf movement is orchestrated by clock gene LHY in Medicago truncatula显示文摘As sessile organisms, plants perceive, respond, and adapt to the environmental changes for optimal growth and survival. The plant growth and fitness are enhanced by circadian clocks through coordination of numerous biological events. In legume species,nitrogen-fixing root nodules were developed as the plant organs specialized for symbiotic transfer of ni-trogen between microsymbiont and host. Here,we report that the endogenous circadian rhythm in nodules is regulated by MtLHY in legume species Medicago truncatula.Loss of function of MtLHY leads to a reduction in the number of nodules formed, resulting in a diminished ability to assimilate nitrogen. The operation of the 24-h rhythm in shoot is further influenced by the availability of nitrogen produced by the nodules, leading to the irregulated nyctinastic leaf movement and reduced biomass in mtlhy mutants. These data shed new light on the roles of MtLHY in the orchestration of circadian oscillator in nodules and shoots, which provides a mechanistic link between nodulation, nitrogen assimilation, and clock function.Yiming Kong Lu Han Xiu Liu Hongfeng Wang Lizhu Wen Xiaolin Yu Xiaodong Xu Fanjiang Kong Chunxiang Fu Kirankumar S.Mysore Jiangqi Wen Chuanen Zhou 2020Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2020,62,12:4
MS1 is essential for male fertility by regulating the microsporocyte cell plate expansion in soybean显示文摘Male sterility is an essential trait in hybrid seed production, especially for monoclinous and autogamous food crops.Soybean male-sterile ms1 mutant has been known for more than 50 years and could be instrumental in making hybrid seeds. However, the gene responsible for the male-sterile phenotype has remained unknown. Here,we report the map-based cloning and characterization of the MS1 gene in soybean.MS1 encodes a kinesin protein and localizes to the nucleus, where it is required for the male meiotic cytokinesis after telophase Ⅱ.We further substantiated that MS1 colocalizes with microtubules and is essential for cell plate formation in soybean male gametogenesis through immunostaining. Both ms1 and CRISPR/Cas9 knockout mutants show complete male sterility but are otherwise phenotypically normal, making them perfect tools for producing hybrid seeds. The identification of MS1 has the practical potential for assembling the sterility system and speeding up hybrid soybean breeding.Xiaolong Fang Xiaoyuan Sun Xiangdong Yang Qing Li Chunjing Lin Jie Xu Wenjun Gong Yifan Wang Lu Liu Limei Zhao Baohui Liu Jun Qin Mengchen Zhang Chunbao Zhang Fanjiang Kong Meina Li 2021Science China(Life Sciences)2021,64,9:4
Agronomical selection on loss-of-function of GIGANTEA simultaneously facilitates soybean salt tolerance and early maturity显示文摘Salt stress and flowering time are major factors limiting geographic adaptation and yield productivity in soybean(Glycine max).Although improving crop salt tolerance and latitude adaptation are essential for efficient agricultural production, whether and how these two traits are integrated remains largely unknown. Here,we used a genome-wide association study to identify a major salt-tolerance locus controlled by E2,an ortholog of Arabidopsis thaliana GIGANTEA(GI).Loss of E2 function not only shortened flowering time and maturity, but also enhanced salt-tolerance in soybean.E2 delayed soybean flowering by enhancing the transcription of the core flowering suppressor gene E1,thereby repressing Flowering Locus T(FT)expression. An E2 knockout mutant e2^(CR) displayed reduced accumulation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)during the response to salt stress by releasing peroxidase, which functions in ROS scavenging to avoid cytotoxicity.Evolutionary and population genetic analyses also suggested that loss-of-function e2 alleles have been artificially selected during breeding for soybean adaptation to high-latitude regions with greater salt stress. Our findings provide insights into the coupled selection for adaptation to both latitude and salt stress in soybean;and offer an ideal target for molecular breeding of early-maturing and salt-tolerant cultivars.Lidong Dong Zhihong Hou Haiyang Li Zhaobo Li Chao Fang Lingping Kong Yongli Li Hao Du Tai Li Lingshuang Wang Milan He Xiaohui Zhao Qun Cheng Fanjiang Kong Baohui Liu 2022Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2022,64,10:3
Natural variation and artificial selection of photoperiodic flowering genes and their applications in crop adaptation显示文摘Flowering links vegetative growth and reproductive growth and involves the coordination of local environmental cues and plant genetic information.Appropriate timing of floral initiation and maturation in both wild and cultivated plants is important to their fitness and productivity in a given growth environment. The domestication of plants into crops, and later crop expansion and improvement, has often involved selection for early flowering. In this review,we analyze the basic rules for photoperiodic adaptation in several economically important and/or well-researched crop species. The ancestors of rice(Oryza sativa),maize(Zea mays),soybean(Glycine max),and tomato(Solanum lycopersicum)are short-day plants whose photosensitivity was reduced or lost during domestication and expansion to high-latitude areas.Wheat(Triticum aestivum)and barley(Hordeum vulgare)are long-day crops whose photosensitivity is influenced by both latitude and vernalization type. Here,we summarize recent studies about where these crops were domesticated, how they adapted to photoperiodic conditions as their growing area expanded from domestication locations to modern cultivating regions, and how allelic variants of photoperiodic flowering genes were selected during this process.A deeper understanding of photoperiodic flowering in each crop will enable better molecular design and breeding of high-yielding cultivars suited to particular local environments.Xiaoya Lin Chao Fang Baohui Liu Fanjiang Kong 2021aBIOTECH2021,2,2:3
FT5a interferes with the Dt1-AP1 feedback loop to control flowering time and shoot determinacy in soybean显示文摘Flowering time and stem growth habit determine inflorescence architecture in soybean, which in turn influences seed yield. Dt1, a homolog of Arabidopsis TERMINAL FLOWER 1(TFL1), is a major controller of stem growth habit, but its underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that Dt1 affects node number and plant height, as well as flowering time,in soybean under long-day conditions. The b ZIP transcription factor FDc1 physically interacts with Dt1, and the FDc1-Dt1 complex directly represses the expression of APETALA1(AP1). We propose that FT5 a inhibits Dt1 activity via a competitive interaction with FDc1 and directly upregulates AP1. Moreover, AP1 represses Dt1 expression by directly binding to the Dt1 promoter, suggesting that AP1 and Dt1 form a suppressive regulatory feedback loop to determine the fate of the shoot apical meristem. These findings provide novel insights into the roles of Dt1 and FT5 a in controlling the stem growth habit and flowering time in soybean, which determine the adaptability and grain yield of this important crop.Lin Yue Xiaoming Li Chao Fang Liyu Chen Hui Yang Jie Yang Zhonghui Chen Haiyang Nan Linnan Chen Yuhang Zhang Haiyang Li Xingliang Hou Zhicheng Dong James LWeller Jun Abe Baohui Liu Fanjiang Kong 2021Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2021,63,6:3
Two soybean homologues of TERMINAL FLOWER 1 control flowering time under long day conditions显示文摘Flowering time is a key agronomic trait that directly affect the adaptation and yield of soybean. After whole genome duplications, about 75%of genes being represented by multiple copies in soybean. There are four TERMINAL FLOWER 1(TFL1)genes in soybean, and the TFL1b(Dt1)has been characterized as the determinant of stem growth habit. The function of other TFL1 homologs in soybean is still unclear. Here,we generated knockout mutants by CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing technology and found that the tfl1c/tfl1d double mutants flowered significantly earlier than wild-type plants. We investigated that TFL1c and TFL1d could physically interact with the b ZIP transcription factor FDc1 and bind to the promoter of APETALA1a(AP1a).RNA-seq and q RT-PCR analyses indicated that TFL1c and TFL1d repressed the expressions of the four AP1 homologs and delayed the flowering time in soybean. The two genes play important roles in the regulation of flowering time in soybean and mainly act as the flowering inhibitors under long-day conditions. Our results identify novel components in the flowering-time regulation network of soybean and will be invaluable for molecular breeding of improved soybean yield.Lingshuang Wang Chun Lin Bohui Li Tong Su Shichen Li Haiyang Li Fanglei He Chuanjie Gou Zheng Chen Yanan Wang Jun Qin Baohui Liu Fanjiang Kong Lin Yue Sijia Lu Chao Fang 2023The Crop Journal2023,11,3:3
Optimal root system strategies for desert phreatophytic seedlings in the search for groundwater显示文摘Desert phreatophytes are greatly dependent on groundwater, but how their root systems adapt to different groundwater depths is poorly understood. In the present study, shoot and root growths of Alhagi sparsifolia Shap. seedlings were studied across a gradient of groundwater depths. Leaves, stems and roots of different orders were measured after 120 days of different groundwater treatments. Results indicated that the depth of soil wetting front and the vertical distribution of soil water contents were highly controlled by groundwater depths. The shoot growth and biomass of A. sparsifolia decreased, but the root growth and rooting depth increased under deeper groundwater conditions. The higher ratios of root biomass, root/shoot and root length/leaf area under deeper groundwater conditions implied that seedlings of A. sparsifolia economized carbon cost on their shoot growths. The roots of A. sparsifolia distributed evenly around the soil wetting fronts under deeper groundwater conditions. Root diameters and root lengths of all orders were correlated with soil water availabilities both within and among treatments. Seedlings of A. sparsifolia produced finer first- and second-order roots but larger third- and fourth-order roots in dry soils. The results demonstrated that the root systems of desert phreatophytes can be optimized to acquire groundwater resources and maximize seedling growth by balancing the costs of carbon gain.LI Changjun ZENG Fanjiang ZHANG Bo LIU Bo GUO Zichun GAO Huanhuan TIYIP Tashpolat 2015Journal of Arid Land2015,7,4:2
Understandings and future challenges in soybean functional genomics and molecular breeding显示文摘Soybean(Glycine max)is a major source of plant protein and oil.Soybean breeding has benefited from advances in functional genomics. In particular, the release of soybean reference genomes has advanced our understanding of soybean adaptation to soil nutrient deficiencies, the molecular mechanism of symbiotic nitrogen(N)fixation, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and the roles of flowering time in regional adaptation, plant architecture, and seed yield and quality.Nevertheless, many challenges remain for soybean functional genomics and molecular breeding, mainly related to improving grain yield through high-density planting,maize-soybean intercropping, taking advantage of wild resources, utilization of heterosis, genomic prediction and selection breeding, and precise breeding through genome editing. This review summarizes the current progress in soybean functional genomics and directs future challenges for molecular breeding of soybean.Haiping Du Chao Fang Yaru Li Fanjiang Kong Baohui Liu 2023Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2023,65,2:2
