| 1 | Bone–cartilage crosstalk:a conversation for understanding osteoarthritis显示文摘Although cartilage degradation is the characteristic feature of osteoarthritis(OA), it is now recognized that the whole joint is involved in the progression of OA. In particular, the interaction(crosstalk) between cartilage and subchondral bone is thought to be a central feature of this process. The interface between articular cartilage and bone of articulating long bones is a unique zone, which comprises articular cartilage,below which is the calcified cartilage sitting on and intercalated into the subchondral bone plate. Below the subchondral plate is the trabecular bone at the end of the respective long bones. In OA, there are welldescribed progressive destructive changes in the articular cartilage, which parallel characteristic changes in the underlying bone. This review examines the evidence that biochemical and biomechanical signaling between these tissue compartments is important in OA disease progression and asks whether such signaling might provide possibilities for therapeutic intervention to halt or slow disease development. | David M Findlay Julia S Kuliwaba | 2016 | Bone Research2016，4，3： | 27 |
| 2 | Hepatocellular carcinoma in central Sydney :a 10yearreview of patients seen in a medical oncology department显示文摘AIM To report a single Australian oncology unit′s experience with the management of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in the context of a literature review of the current management issues. METHODS Retrospective case record review of 76 patients with diagnosis of HCC referred to the unit between 1984 and 1995. RESULTS Sixty three patients had adequate records for analysis. Thirty six (56%) were migrants with half from Southeast Asia. Twenty four patients had a documented viral aetiology. Nine (14%) of 51 patients with pathological confirmation of HCC had normal alpha fetoprotein levels. Median survival of the 20 patients managed palliatively was 5 weeks compared to 16 weeks for the cohort overall. Surgery in 16 patients rendered all initially disease free with a median survival of 88 weeks. Chemoembolisation induced tumor responses in 5 of the 11 patients so treated. Systemic chemotherapy and tamoxifen treatment caused tumor response in two of 12 and one of 25 respectively. CONCLUSION Prolonged survival of patients with HCC depends on early detection of small tumors suitable for surgical resection. Other active treatments are palliative in intent and have limited success. In addition to tumor response and survival duration, the toxicities of therapies and the overall quality of life of patients need to be considered as important outcomes. | 3 | Role of polyethylene particles in peri-prosthetic osteolysis:A review显示文摘There is convincing evidence that particles produced by the wear of joint prostheses are causal in the periprosthetic loss of bone,or osteolysis,which,if it progresses,leads to the phenomenon of aseptic loosening.It is important to fully understand the biology of this bone loss because it threatens prosthesis survival,and loosened implants can result in peri-prosthetic fracture,which is disastrous for the patient and presents a difficult surgical scenario.The focus of this review is the bioactivity of polyethylene(PE)particles,since there is evidence that these are major players in the development and progression of osteolysis around prostheses which use PE as the bearing surface.The review describes the biological consequences of interaction of PE particles with macrophages,osteoclasts and cells of the osteoblast lineage,including osteocytes.It explores the possible cellular mechanisms of action of PE and seeks to use the findings to date to propose potential nonsurgical treatments for osteolysis.In particular,a nonsurgical approach is likely to be applicable to implants containing newer,highly cross-linked PEs(HXLPEs),for which osteolysis seems to occur with much reduced PE wear compared with conventional PEs.The caveat here is that we know little as yet about the bioactivity of HXLPE particles and addressing this constitutes our next challenge. | Gerald J Atkins David R Haynes Donald W Howie David M Findlay | 2011 | World Journal of Orthopedics2011，2，10： | 11 |

| 5 | Adoption of HPAI biosecurity measures: The Chinese broiler industry显示文摘Highly pathogenic avian influenza(HPAI) contamination via wild birds and rodents poses a threat to food security and safety.As chicken meat comprises an increasing proportion of diet in China,it is useful to determine whether broiler farmers are adopting wild bird and rodent controls to minimize the risk of HPAI impacts on food supply.Our study surveyed a cross sectional sample of 331 Chinese broiler farmers in six provinces.We find that only 47% of farmers(mainly farmers with large herds) adopted control measures against wild birds and rodents,while 14% adopted no measures.Farm size was the biggest driver of adoption followed by proportion of farm revenue derived from broiler production.However,southern farmers were at a far greater probability of non-adoption.We suggest that assistance in the form of education/training programs and subsidized traps or baiting controls across smaller producers could help raise of the adoption level toward more effective HPAI control. | HUANG Ze-ying Adam Loch Christopher Findlay WANG Ji-min | 2017 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2017，16，1： | 2 |
