Degree of Brine Evaporation and Origin of the Mengyejing Potash Deposit:Evidence from Fluid Inclusions in Halite显示文摘The Mengyejing potash deposit is located in the southern port of the Simao Basin, Yunnan Province, and is hosted in mid-Cretaceous strata. The chemical compositions of fluid inclusions in halite crystals, collected from the level-610 adit in the deposit, were analysed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(LA-ICP-MS). The results show that the brine is of the Na-K-Mg-Ca-Cl type and has K concentrations that are distinctly higher than those of Mg and Ca, unlike normal brines associated with Cretaceous halite. The high K concentrations indicate that the degree of evaporation of the ancient Mengyejing saline lake was very high, reaching the sylvite deposition stage but rarely reaching the carnallite deposition stage. The trajectory of the H and O isotopic compositions of the brines in the halite-hosted fluid inclusions corresponds to intense evaporation, indicating that the net evaporation exceeded the net inflow of brines. These brine compositions in halite-hosted fluid inclusions were likely formed by the dissolution of previously deposited K-bearing minerals by fresh continental and/or seawater, forming a type of modified seawater, with deep hydrothermal fluids potentially supplying additional potassium. The basin likely experienced multiple seawater incursion, dissolution and redeposition events in a high-temperature environment with high evaporation rates. | SHEN Lijian LIU Chenglin WANG Licheng HU Yufei HU Mingyue FENG Yuexing | 2017 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2017,91,1: | 9
The Toxic Mechanism of High Lethality of Herbicide Butachlor in Marine Flatfish Flounder,Paralichthys olivaceus显示文摘The toxic mechanism of herbicide butachlor to induce extremely high lethality in marine flatfish flounder,Paralichthys Olivaceus, was analyzed by histopathological examination, antioxidant enzymes activities and ATP content assay.Histopathological examination of gill, liver and kidney of exposed fishes showed that gill was a target organ of butachlor. The butachlor seriously impaired the respiration of gills by a series of lesions such as edema, lifting and detachment of lamellar epithelium, breakdown of pillar cells, and blood congestion. The dysfunction of gill respiration caused suffocation to the exposed flounder with extremely high acute lethality.Antioxidant enzyme activity assay of the in vitro cultured flounder gill(FG) cells exposed to butachlor indicated that butachlor markedly inhibited the antioxidant enzyme activities of Superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT) and glutathione peroxidase(GPX).Furthermore, along with the decline of antioxidant enzyme activities,ATP content in the exposed FG cells decreased, too. This infers that the oxidative stress induced by butachlor can inhibit the production of cellular ATP.Similar decrease of ATP content was also observed in the exposed flounder gill tissues.Taken together,as in FG cells, butachlor possibly induced a short supply of ATP in pillar cells by inhibiting the antioxidant enzyme activities and then affecting the contractibility of the pillar cells, which in turn resulted in the blood congestion and suffocation of exposed flounder. | GUO Huarong YIN Licheng ZHANG Shicui FENG Wenrong | 2010 | Journal of Ocean University of China2010,9,3: | 8

The influence of ENSO on sea surface temperature variations in the China seas显示文摘Positive SST anomalies usually appear in remote ocean such as the China seas during an ENSO event.By analyzing the monthly data of HadISST from 1950 to 2007,it shows that the interannual component of SST anomalies peak approximately 10 months after SST anomalies peak in the eastern equatorial Pacific. As the ENSO event progresses, the positive SST anomalies spread throughout the China seas and eastward along the Kuroshio extension.Atmospheric reanalysis data demonstrate that changes in the net surface heat flux entering into the China seas are responsible for the SST variability.During El Ni o,the western north Pacific anticyclone is generated, with anomalous southwester lies prevailing along the East Asian coast. This anticyclone reduces the mean surface wind speed which decreases the surface heat flux and then increases the SST.The delays between the developing of this anticyclone and the south Indian Ocean anticyclone with approximately 3–6 months cause the 2–3 months lag of the surface heat flux between the China seas and the Indian Ocean. The northwestern Pacific anticyclone is the key process bridging the warming in the eastern equatorial Pacific and that in the China seas. | LIU Na WANG Hui LING Tiejun FENG Licheng | 2013 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2013,32,9: | 4

Processes Leading to Second-Year Cooling of the 2010–12 La Ni?a Event,Diagnosed Using GODAS显示文摘Isopycnal analyses were performed on the Global Ocean Data Assimilation System(GODAS) to determine the oceanic processes leading to so-called second-year cooling of the La Nina event. In 2010–12, a horseshoe-like pattern was seen, connecting negative temperature anomalies off and on the Equator, with a dominant influence from the South Pacific. During the 2010 La Nina event, warm waters piled up at subsurface depths in the western tropical Pacific. Beginning in early 2011,these warm subsurface anomalies propagated along the Equator toward the eastern basin, acting to reverse the sign of sea surface temperature(SST) anomalies(SSTAs) there and initiate a warm SSTA. However, throughout early 2011, pronounced negative anomalies persisted off the Equator in the subsurface depths of the South Pacific. As isopycnal surfaces outcropped in the central equatorial Pacific, negative anomalies from the subsurface spread upward along with mean circulation pathways, naturally initializing a cold SSTA. In the summer, a cold SSTA reappeared in the central basin, which subsequently strengthened due to the off-equatorial effects mostly in the South Pacific. These SSTAs acted to initiate local coupled air–sea interactions, generating atmospheric–oceanic anomalies that developed and evolved with the second-year cooling in the fall of 2011. However, the cooling tendency in mid-2012 did not develop into another La Nina event, since the cold anomalies in the South Pacific were not strong enough. An analysis of the 2007–09 La Nina event revealed similar processes to the2010–12 La Nina event. | FENG Licheng ZHANG Rong-Hua WANG Zhanggui CHEN Xingrong | 2015 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2015,32,3: | 3
The 2020–2021 prolonged La Niña evolution in the tropical Pacific显示文摘The evolution of sea surface temperature(SST)in the tropical Pacific during 2020–2021 indicates a second-year cooling in late 2021 again, following the 2020 La Niña event. Its physical explanations are still lacking, and there is a clear need to understand the underlying processes involved.Observational data and reanalysis products are used to describe the characteristics and spatiotemporal evolution of upper-ocean thermal anomalies;an intermediate coupled model(ICM)is also used to perform numerical experiments to confirm these observation-based inferences. The evolution of subsurface thermal anomalies is critically important to that of SST in the central-eastern equatorial Pacific;the effects of the former on the latter can be well represented by the temperature of subsurface waters entrained into the mixed layer(Te),a field that reflects a subsurface forcing on SST.The SST evolution is sensitively dependent on the intensities of the local effect associated with Te anomalies in the eastern equatorial Pacific and the remote effect associated with subsurface anomalies from the western Pacific.During early-and mid-2021,a competition was present between these local and remote effects associated with Te anomalies. When the remote warming effect dominates the local cooling effect, the cold SST condition in the east is likely to turn into neutral and warm conditions;otherwise,it tends to continue. In addition, the negative Te anomalies were sustained and enhanced by off-equatorial processes due to equatorial wave reflections at the eastern boundary associated with the 2020 La Niña event. The SST evolution in mid-2021 corresponded to a situation in which the warming effect associated with positive subsurface thermal anomalies from the west were not strong enough to counteract the local cooling effect associated with negative anomalies in the east.In due course, cold SST anomalies in the east developed again and the second-year cooling reoccurred in late 2021,with a turning point in June 2021.Modeling experiments support these arguments and indicate that the intensity of subsurface thermal effect on SST,as represented by Te anomalies, needs to be adequately depicted for coupled models to capture the 2021 second-year cooling conditions in the tropical Pacific. | Chuan GAO Maonan CHEN Lu ZHOU Licheng FENG Rong-Hua ZHANG | 2022 | Science China Earth Sciences2022,65,12: | 3
Will the Historic Southeasterly Wind over the Equatorial Pacific in March 2022 Trigger a Third-year La Niña Event?显示文摘Based on the updates of the Climate Prediction Center and International Research Institute for Climate and Society(CPC/IRI)and the China Multi-Model Ensemble(CMME)El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)Outlook issued in April 2022,La Niña is favored to continue through the boreal summer and fall, indicating a high possibility of a three-year La Niña(2020-23).It would be the first three-year La Niña since the 1998-2001 event, which is the only observed three-year La Niña event since 1980.By examining the status of air-sea fields over the tropical Pacific in March 2022,it can be seen that while the thermocline depths were near average, the southeasterly wind stress was at its strongest since 1980.Here,based on a quaternary linear regression model that includes various relevant air-sea variables over the equatorial Pacific in March,we argue that the historic southeasterly winds over the equatorial Pacific are favorable for the emergence of the third-year La Niña,and both the anomalous easterly and southerly wind stress components are important and contribute~50%of the third-year La Niña growth, respectively.Additionally, the possible global climate impacts of this event are discussed. | Xianghui FANG Fei ZHENG Kexin LI Zeng-Zhen HU Hongli REN Jie WU Xingrong CHEN Weiren LAN Yuan YUAN Licheng FENG Qifa CAI Jiang ZHU | 2023 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2023,40,1: | 2
On the Second-Year Warming in Late 2019 over the Tropical Pacific and Its Attribution to an Indian Ocean Dipole Event显示文摘After its maturity,El Niño usually decays rapidly in the following summer and evolves into a La Niña pattern. However, this was not the case for the 2018/19 El Niño event.Based on multiple reanalysis data sets, the space-time evolution and triggering mechanism for the unusual second-year warming in late 2019,after the 2018/19 El Niño event, are investigated in the tropical Pacific. After a short decaying period associated with the 2018/19 El Niño condition, positive sea surface temperature anomalies(SSTAs)re-intensified in the eastern equatorial Pacific in late 2019.Compared with the composite pattern of El Niño in the following year, two key differences are evident in the evolution of SSTAs in 2019.First,is the persistence of the surface warming over the central equatorial Pacific in May,and second,is the re-intensification of the positive SSTAs over the eastern equatorial Pacific in September.Observational results suggest that the re-intensification of anomalous westerly winds over the western and central Pacific, induced remotely by an extreme Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD)event, acted as a triggering mechanism for the second-year warming in late 2019.That is,the IOD-related cold SSTAs in the eastern Indian Ocean established and sustained anomalous surface westerly winds over the western equatorial Pacific, which induced downwelling Kelvin waves propagating eastward along the equator. At the same time, the subsurface ocean provided plenty of warm water in the western and central equatorial Pacific.Mixed-layer heat budget analyses further confirm that positive zonal advection, induced by the anomalous westerly winds, and thermocline feedback played important roles in leading to the second-year warming in late 2019.This study provides new insights into the processes responsible for the diversity of El Niño evolution, which is important for improving the physical understanding and seasonal prediction of El Niño events. | Licheng FENG Fei LIU Rong-Hua ZHANG Xue HAN Bo YU Chuan GAO | 2021 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2021,38,12: | 2
High-performance phosphate supported on HZSM-5 catalyst for dehydration of glycerol to acrolein显示文摘The purpose of this study is to increase acrolein yield and capability of coking resistance in the reaction of glycerol dehydration to acrolein by assembling metal phosphate supported on HZSM-5 catalyst. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, BET, NH_3-TPD, CO_2-TPD and Py-IR techniques. It was found that metal phosphate species were incorporated into the porous structure of HZSM-5 zeolites, thus influencing the surface and textural physico-chemical properties of the supporters. The alkaline-treated HZSM-5 catalyst promoted the dispersion of phosphate species on the carriers. Moreover, the amount of strong acidity was tremendously improved by adding the different metal hydrophosphates and the catalysts show high catalytic activity. In this present work, the Sn1/4 H_2PO_4/HZSM-5 catalyst exhibited good performance in the catalytic activity and coking resistant ability, which resulted in a high acrolein yield of 83% initially and acrolein yield of 68% after 30 h. The acidity, especially the ratio of strong to weak acid, plays an important role in promoting acrolein yield and stability simultaneously. | Feng Zhang Xin Ren He Huang Jun Huang Medak Sudhakar Licheng Liu | 2018 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2018,26,5: | 2
A semi-analytical model for the propagation of Rossby waves in slowly varying flow显示文摘Instead of using complicated general circulation models (GCMs), a simple semi-analytical model based on ray theory has been used to study energy evolution and ray path of Rossby waves in slowly varying mean flows. Our model yields similar results to those calculated from barotropic models, and also provides a chance to study Rossby waves in the slowly varying flows with both vertical and meridional shears. The model results show that upward Rossby waves can only grow in westerlies, and decay when further ascend. The baroclinic Rossky waves are restrained by the β effect in lower latitude. In the westerly jet with meridional and vertical shears, the barotropic Rossby waves originated from south of the westerly jet, and these can grow while propagating upper-northward. The baroclinic Rossby waves originated from north of the westerly jet and can grow while propagating upward and southward. Such a semi-analytical model provides a simple forecasting tool to allow study of the local weather anomalies to the heating/topography forcing associated with the global warming. | LIU Fei CHAO JiPing HUANG Gang FENG LiCheng | 2011 | Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,25: | 2
Roles of Wind Stress and Subsurface Cold Water in the Second-Year Cooling of the 2017/18 La Nina Event显示文摘After the strong 2015/16 El Nino event, cold conditions prevailed in the tropical Pacific with the second-year cooling of the 2017/18 La Ni?a event. Many coupled models failed to predict the cold SST anomalies(SSTAs)in 2017.By using the ERA5 and GODAS(Global Ocean Data Assimilation System)products, atmospheric and oceanic factors were examined that could have been responsible for the second-year cooling, including surface wind and the subsurface thermal state.A time sequence is described to demonstrate how the cold SSTAs were produced in the central-eastern equatorial Pacific in late 2017.Since July 2017,easterly anomalies strengthened in the central Pacific;in the meantime, wind stress divergence anomalies emerged in the far eastern region, which strengthened during the following months and propagated westward, contributing to the development of the second-year cooling in 2017.At the subsurface, weak negative temperature anomalies were accompanied by upwelling in the eastern equatorial Pacific, which provided the cold water source for the sea surface.Thereafter, both the cold anomalies and upwelling were enhanced and extended westward in the centraleastern equatorial Pacific. These changes were associated with the seasonally weakened EUC(the Equatorial Undercurrent)and strengthened SEC(the South Equatorial Current),which favored more cold waters being accumulated in the central-equatorial Pacific. Then, the subsurface cold waters stretched upward with the convergence of the horizontal currents and eventually outcropped to the surface. The subsurface-induced SSTAs acted to induce local coupled air–sea interactions, which generated atmospheric–oceanic anomalies developing and evolving into the second-year cooling in the fall of 2017. | Licheng FENG Rong-Hua ZHANG Bo YU Xue HAN | 2020 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2020,37,8: | 2
