| 3 | Impacts of El Nino-Southern Oscillation events on China's rice production显示文摘This paper aims to demonstrate the relationships between ENSO and rice production of Jiangxi province in order to identify the reason that ENSO might have little effect on Chinese rice production. Using a data set with measures of Jiangxi's climate and rice production,we find the reason that during 1985 and 2004 ENSO's well correlated with rainfall did not promote Chinese rice production. First,the largest effects of ENSO mostly occur in the months when there is no rice in the field. Second,there is almost no temperature effect. Finally,the monthly distribution of rainfall is almost the same in ENSO and neutral years because the largest effects are during months when there is the least rain. | 5 | Transition from wavelets to ripples in a laboratory flume with a diverging channel显示文摘An experimental investigation on the initiation and development of bed forms on a bed of fine silica sand was conducted under alluvial flow conditions in a laboratory flume with a diverging channel. The main aims of the study were to assess: i) the steepness of bed forms in the transition stage of development; and ii) the threshold height of wavelets (ηt) that triggered the start of ripple development. Detailed bed profile measurements were carried out using an acoustic Doppler probe, traversed longitudinally over the sediment bed at various experimentation times. The bed form dimensions were extracted from such bed profile records and analysed for the wavelet, transition and equilibrium stages. It was found that the steepness of ripples in the transition and equilibrium stages were similar, confirming predictions of previous mathematical model simulations. A lognormal distribution fitted the wavelet length data. The wavelet threshold height was estimated as ηt≈ 7 mm, or y+ ≈ 80 in wall units. Such a height magnitude suggested that ripple development could be triggered by the wavelets reaching the outer flow zone of a turbulent boundary layer. The ηt value obtained corresponded generally to the intersection point between two predictive equations for bed form dimensions. | 6 | Laparoscopic management of intra-abdominal infections:Systematic review of the literature显示文摘AIM: To investigate the role of laparoscopy in diagnosis and treatment of intra abdominal infections.METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed including studies where intra abdominal infections were treated laparoscopically.RESULTS: Early laparoscopic approaches have become the standard surgical technique for treating acute cholecystitis. The laparoscopic appendectomy has been demonstrated to be superior to open surgery in acute appendicitis. In the event of diverticulitis, laparoscopic resections have proven to be safe and effective procedures for experienced laparoscopic surgeons and may be performed without adversely affecting morbidity and mortality rates. However laparoscopic resection has not been accepted by the medical community as the primary treatment of choice. In high-risk patients, laparoscopic approach may be used for exploration or peritoneal lavage and drainage. The successful laparoscopic repair of perforated peptic ulcers for experienced surgeons, is demonstrated to be safe and effective. Regarding small bowel perforations, comparative studies contrasting open and laparoscopic surgeries have not yet been conducted. Successful laparoscopic resections addressing iatrogenic colonic perforation have been reported despite a lack of literature-based evidence supporting such procedures. | 8 | Electrostatic concentration of phosphate flotation concentrate显示文摘The concentration of phosphate flotation concentrate with P2O5 grade lower than the commercially acceptable phosphate quality was upgraded in the use of tribo-electrostatic technique. The concentration of the flotation concentrate stream was conducted under both triboelectrification and inductive charging mechanism. Mineralogical analysis reveals that the phosphate ore utilized was dominated mainly by fluorapatite, crandallite, wavellite, and with quartz as the major gangue mineral. Flotations concentrate of about 28.87% P2O5 was obtained from the reverse flotation technique, after conditioning the phosphate ore at 80% passing 150 lm under Lilafloat. Constant parameters such as à6 kV charging voltage, 25 kV separating voltage, inlet air, different charger rotary speed and splitter distances were investigated. Commercially accepted grade of 35.50% P2O5 was attained after the second stage of separation with a recovery of 12.26%, another phosphate product of 34.02% P2O5 and 85.19% was also recovered under the same condition. Single stage of separation also shows a significant increase in the grade of the product obtained, with 33.41% P2O5 and 84.07% recovery achievable. | 9 | FOLFIRINOX and translational studies: Towards personalized therapy in pancreatic cancer显示文摘Pancreatic cancer is an extremely aggressive disease; although progress has been made in the last few years, the prognosis of these patients remains dismal. FOLFIRINOX is now considered a standard treatment in first-line setting, since it demonstrated an improved overall and progression-free survival vs gemcitabine alone. However, the enthusiasm over the benefit of this three-drug regimen is tempered by the associated increased toxicity profile, and many efforts have been made to improve the feasibility of this schedule. After a more recent phase Ⅲ trial showing an improved outcome over gemcitabine, the combination of gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel emerged as another standard first-line treatment. However, this treatment is also associated with more side effects. In addition, despite initial promising data on the predictive role of SPARClevels, recent studies showed that these levels are not associated with nab-paclitaxel efficacy. The choice to use this treatment over FOLFIRINOX is therefore a topic of debate, also because no validated biomarkers to guide FOLFIRINOX treatment are available. In the era of actionable mutations and target agents it would be desirable to identify molecular factors or biomarkers to predict response to therapy in order to maximize the efficacy of treatment and avoid useless toxic effects for non-responding patients. However, until today the milestone of treatment for pancreatic cancer remains chemotherapy combinations, without predictive or monitoring tools existing to optimize therapy. | 12 | The Severn Barrage and other tidal energy options:Hydrodynamic and power output modelling显示文摘Details are given herein of the current main proposals for tidal energy provision from the Severn Estuary, in the UK, with particular emphasis being focused on the Severn Barrage project, as originally promoted by the Severn Tidal Power Group. In particular, emphasis has focused on assessing the potential hydro-environmental impacts and power outputs of a barrage across the estuary, with an unstructured grid, high resolution, model being developed and applied to the estuary to assess the implications of each of five shortlisted proposed schemes on the hydrodynamic, geomorphologic, flood risk and faecal indicator organism changes within the estuary. An outline is given of recent research on power refinements to the model to assess the options for power generation. The results show that the Severn Barrage has the potential to reduce the tidal currents in a highly dynamic estuary. This leads to the reduction of suspended sediment loads (particularly upstream of the barrage), an increase of light penetration within the water column and, potentially, an increase in the benthic bio-diversity and the level of aquatic life in the estuary. The results also show that the Severn Barrage will reduce markedly the risk of flooding upstream of the barrage and to a lesser extent downstream of the structure. In contrast the alternative options have far less impact on flood risk changes. In addition to the Severn Barrage some results are shown herein for a typical lagoon option, namely the Fleming Lagoon. | Roger A. | 14 | Statistical analysis and concentration of iron ore using Longi LGS 500 WHIMS显示文摘A Longi LGS 500 wet high intensity magnetic separator(WHIMS) was used to concentrate a fine, low grade South African hematite ore. The ore was prepared into different size fractions and was subjected to changes in pulp density, magnetic field intensity and pulsation frequency which followed a 33 full factorial matrix. The concentrate mass yield and Fe grade were selected as the dependent responses to the changes. The analysis of variance(ANOVA) shows that the variables investigated are significant to the material's response to magnetic separation. This significance was in the order of magnetic field intensity followed by pulsation frequency and then pulp density. It was also noted that a single stage magnetic separation has a potential to upgrade a feed( 75 lm and 40% Fe) to a 55% Fe grade, as the pulsation frequency increases. | 15 | The Relationship between Magnetic Gradient and Magnetic Shear in Five Super Active Regions Producing Great Flares显示文摘We study the magnetic structure of five well-known active regions that produced great flares (X5 or larger). The six flares under investigation are the X12 flare on 1991 June 9 in AR 6659, the X5.7 flare on 2000 July 14 in AR 9077, the X5.6 flare on 2001 April 6 in AR 9415, the X5.3 flare on 2001 August 25 in AR 9591, the X17 flare on 2003 October 28 and the X10 flare on 2003 October 29, both in AR 10486. The last five events had corresponding LASCO observations and were all associated with Halo CMEs. We analyzed vector magne-tograms from Big Bear Solar Observatory, Huairou Solar Observing Station, Marshall Space Right Center and Mees Solar Observatory. In particular, we studied the magnetic gradient derived from line-of-sight magnetograms and magnetic shear derived from vector magne-tograms, and found an apparent correlation between these two parameters at a level of about 90%. We found that the magnetic gradient could be a better proxy than the shear for predicting where a major flare might occur: all six flares occurred in neutral lines with maximum gradient. The mean gradient of the flaring neutral lines ranges from 0.14 to 0.50 G km-1, 2.3 to 8 times the average value for all the neutral lines in the active regions. | 18 | Role of the advanced glycation end products receptor in Crohn's disease inflammation显示文摘AIM:To investigate the level of mucosal expression and the involvement of the receptor for the advanced glycation end products(RAGE)in delayed apoptosis and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αproduction in Crohn’s disease(CD).METHODS:Surgical and endoscopic specimens from both inflamed and non-inflamed areas of the ileum and/or colon were collected from 20 and 14 adult CD patients,respectively,and used for the assessment of RAGE expression by means of immunohistochemistry and western blotting analysis.Normal tissues from 21 control subjects were used for comparison.The same polyclonal anti-human RAGE antibody(R and D System)was used in all experimental conditions.RAGE staining was quantized by a score including both the amount of positive cells and intensity of immunoreactivity;cellular pattern was also described.The effects of RAGE blocking on apoptotic rate and TNF-αproduction were investigated on immune cells freshly isolated from CD mucosa and incubated both with and without the muramyl dipeptide used as antigenic stimulus.Statistical analysis was performed via the test for trend,with regression models to account for intra-patient correlations.A 2-sided P<0.05 was considered significant.RESULTS:In inflamed areas,RAGE expression in both the epithelial and lamina propria compartments was higher than control tissues(P=0.001 and 0.021,respectively),and a cluster of positive cells were usually found in proximity of ulcerative lesions.Similar results were obtained in the lamina propria compartment of non-inflamed areas(P=0.025).The pattern of staining was membranous and granular cytosolic at the epithelial level,while in the lamina propria it was diffuse cytosolic.When evaluating the amount of protein expression by immunoblotting,a significant increase of both surface area and band intensity(P<0.0001 for both)was observed in CD inflamed areas compared to control tissue,while in non-inflamed areas a significant increase was found only for band intensity(P<0.005).Moreover,a significantly lower expression in noninflamed areas in comparison with inflamed areas was found for both surface area and band intensity(P<0.0006 for both).Finally,RAGE blocking largely affects both the apoptotic rate of mucosal cells(towards an increase in both non-inflamed and inflamed areas of P<0.001 and<0.0001,respectively)and TNF-αsecretion(towards a decrease in both non-inflamed and inflamed areas of P<0.05 and<0.01,respectively),mainly in the presence of antigenic stimulation.CONCLUSION:RAGE is up-regulated in CD,especially in inflamed areas,and it appears to play a role in the mechanisms involved in chronic inflammation. | Rachele Ciccocioppo Alessandro Vanoli Catherine Klersy Venerina Imbesi Vincenzo Boccaccio Rachele Manca Elena Betti Giuseppina Cristina Cangemi Elena Strada Roberta Besio Antonio Rossi Colomba Falcone Sandro Ardizzone Paolo Fociani Piergiorgio Danelli Gino Roberto Corazza | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,45: | 2 |
