1Antibacterial approaches in tissue engineering using metal ions and nanoparticles:From mechanisms to applications显示文摘Bacterial infection of implanted scaffolds may have fatal consequences and,in combination with the emergence of multidrug bacterial resistance,the development of advanced antibacterial biomaterials and constructs is of great interest.Since decades ago,metals and their ions had been used to minimize bacterial infection risk and,more recently,metal-based nanomaterials,with improved antimicrobial properties,have been advocated as a novel and tunable alternative.A comprehensive review is provided on how metal ions and ion nanoparticles have the potential to decrease or eliminate unwanted bacteria.Antibacterial mechanisms such as oxidative stress induction,ion release and disruption of biomolecules are currently well accepted.However,the exact antimicrobial mechanisms of the discussed metal compounds remain poorly understood.The combination of different metal ions and surface decorations of nanoparticles will lead to synergistic effects and improved microbial killing,and allow to mitigate potential side effects to the host.Starting with a general overview of antibacterial mechanisms,we subsequently focus on specific metal ions such as silver,zinc,copper,iron and gold,and outline their distinct modes of action.Finally,we discuss the use of these metal ions and nanoparticles in tissue engineering to prevent implant failure.Maria Godoy-Gallardo Ulrich Eckhard Luis M.Delgado Yolanda J.D.de Roo Puente Mireia Hoyos-Nogués F.Javier Gil Roman A.Perez 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,12:14

6Turning carbon dots into selenium bearing nanoplatforms with in vitro GPx-like activity and pro-oxidant activity显示文摘Selenium(Se)has been defined as the“Janus element”,with one face showing antioxidant activity and the other pro-oxidant activity.The biological effect of Se depends on both dose and speciation.Se nanoparticles are attracting major interest,although their large-scale preparation for biomedical applications is not trivial.We hypothesize that acid anhydride-coated carbon dots(AACD)are an attractive platform for preparing nanoparticles containing chemically defined Se.The reaction of AA-CD with 3-selenocyanatopropan-1-amine yields carbon dots bearing selenocyanate and carboxylate groups(CD-SeCN)that allow for tuning the hydrosolubility.CD-SeCN has a Se content of 0.36μmol per mg of nanoparticles,they show the typical photoluminescence of carbon dots.The selenocyanate groups(SeCN)exhibited glutathione peroxidase-like activity and cytotoxicity.Data show that antioxidant behavior differs between normal and tumor cells,the evaluation on HEK293 and A549 cells reveals that the toxicity of CD-SeCN depends on dose,time,intracellular glutathione(GSH)content.The toxicity of CD-SeCN decreases with the time of incubation and the cell death mechanism switches from necrosis to apoptosis,indicating that CD-SeCN is neutralized.Additionally,high levels of intracellular GSH exert a protective effect.These results support a pharmacological potential in cancers with low levels of intracellular GSH.The use of AA-CD as nanoplatforms is a general strategy that paves the way for the engineering of advanced nanosystems.Laura Perez-Garrido Mariano Ortega-Muñoz Fernando Hernandez-Mateo F.Javier Lopez-Jaramillo Francisco Santoyo-Gonzalez 2023Nano Research2023,16,5:1

8Spontaneous and stimulated electron-photon interactions in nanoscale plasmonic near fields显示文摘The interplay between free electrons,light,and matter offers unique prospects for space,time,and energy resolved optical material characterization,structured light generation,and quantum information processing.Here,we study the nanoscale features of spontaneous and stimulated electron–photon interactions mediated by localized surface plasmon resonances at the tips of a gold nanostar using electron energy-loss spectroscopy(EELS),cathodoluminescence spectroscopy(CL),and photon-induced near-field electron microscopy(PINEM).Supported by numerical electromagnetic boundary-element method(BEM)calculations,we show that the different coupling mechanisms probed by EELS,CL,and PINEM feature the same spatial dependence on the electric field distribution of the tip modes.However,the electron–photon interaction strength is found to vary with the incident electron velocity,as determined by the spatial Fourier transform of the electric near-field component parallel to the electron trajectory.For the tightly confined plasmonic tip resonances,our calculations suggest an optimum coupling velocity at electron energies as low as a few keV.Our results are discussed in the context of more complex geometries supporting multiple modes with spatial and spectral overlap.We provide fundamental insights into spontaneous and stimulated electron-light-matter interactions with key implications for research on(quantum)coherent optical phenomena at the nanoscale.Matthias Liebtrau Murat Sivis Armin Feisto Hugo Lourenco-Martins Nicolas Pazos-Pérez Ramon A.Alvarez Puebla F.Javier Garcia de Abajo Albert Polman Claus Ropers 2021Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,5:1

13Free-electron interactions with van der Waals heterostructures: a source of focused X-ray radiation显示文摘The science and technology of X-ray optics have come far,enabling the focusing of X-rays for applications in highresolution X-ray spectroscopy,imaging,and irradiation.In spite of this,many forms of tailoring waves that had substantial impact on applications in the optical regime have remained out of reach in the X-ray regime.This disparity fundamentally arises from the tendency of refractive indices of all materials to approach unity at high frequencies,making X-ray-optical components such as lenses and mirrors much harder to create and often less effcient.Here,we propose a new concept for X-ray focusing based on inducing a curved wavefront into the X-ray generation process,resulting in the intrinsic focusing of X-ray waves.This concept can be seen as effectively integrating the optics to be part of the emission mechanism,thus bypassing the effciency limits imposed by X-ray optical components,enabling the creation of nanobeams with nanoscale focal spot sizes and micrometer-scale focal lengths.Specifically,we implement this concept by designing aperiodic vdw heterostructures that shape X-rays when driven by free electrons.The parameters of the focused hotspot,such as lateral size and focal depth,are tunable as a function of an interlayer spacing chirp and electron energy.Looking forward,ongoing advances in the creation of many-layer vdw heterostructures open unprecedented horizons of focusing and arbitrary shaping of X-ray nanobeams.Xihang Shi Yaniv Kurman Michael Shentcis Liang Jie Wong F.Javier Garcia de Abajo ldo Kaminero 2023Light(Science & Applications)2023,12,7:0
14Low-Cost Tiled Display System Architecture with Dynamic Web-Based Management显示文摘In this paper, a scalable hardware and software architecture for tiled display systems (a.k.a. videowalls), which can be implemented by using low-cost devices, together with a dynamic web-based management and configuration service are proposed. It has been designed to support both stored and live broadcast/broadband content, in mosaic or warp distributions. The displays and devices can be dynamically configured via web in different ways: the displays can create a single display of a larger size;or they can be configured in a customized way in order to playout different media contents in different display combinations. As display renderers, low-cost devices are proposed as the main hardware element to obtain affordable videowall systems. As a proof of concept, two prototypes have been implemented, including an accurate synchronization mechanism based on a Master/Slave control scheme and aggressive and smooth playout adjustment techniques. To evidence the good performance of the prototypes and configuration service, both objective and subjective evaluations have been conducted regarding synchronization accuracy and usability. On the one hand, the mean values of the asynchronies between the video playout processes in each display are kept below 25ms (i.e., frame accuracy). 16Thermal manipulation of plasmons in atomically thin films显示文摘Nanoscale photothermal effects enable important applications in cancer therapy,imaging and catalysis.These effects also induce substantial changes in the optical response experienced by the probing light,thus suggesting their application in all-optical modulation.Here,we demonstrate the ability of graphene,thin metal films,and graphene/metal hybrid systems to undergo photothermal optical modulation with depths as large as>70%over a wide spectral range extending from the visible to the terahertz frequency domains.We envision the use of ultrafast pump laser pulses to raise the electron temperature of graphene during a picosecond timescale in which its mid-infrared plasmon resonances undergo dramatic shifts and broadenings,while visible and near-infrared plasmons in the neighboring metal films are severely attenuated by the presence of hot graphene electrons.Our study opens a promising avenue toward the active photothermal manipulation of the optical response in atomically thin materials with potential applications in ultrafast light modulation.Eduardo J.C.Dias Renwen Yu F.Javier Garcia de Abajo 2020Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1:0
17Radiative loss of coherence in free electrons:a long-range quantum phenomenon显示文摘Quantum physics rules the dynamics of small objects as they interact over microscopic length scales.Nevertheless,quantum correlations involving macroscopic distances can be observed between entangled photons as well as in atomic gases and matter waves at low temperatures.The long-range nature of the electromagnetic coupling between charged particles and extended objects could also trigger quantum phenomena over large distances.Here,we reveal a manifestation of quantum mechanics that involves macroscopic distances and results in a nearly complete depletion of coherence associated with which-way free-electron interference produced by electron-radiation coupling in the presence of distant extended objects.This is a ubiquitous effect that we illustrate through a rigorous theoretical analysis of a two-path electron beam interacting with a semi-infinite metallic plate and find the inter-path coherence to vanish proportionally to the path separation at zero temperature and exponentially at finite temperature.The investigated regime of large distances originates in the coupling of the electron to radiative modes assisted by diffraction at material structures but without any involvement of material excitations.Besides the fundamental interest of this macroscopic quantum phenomenon,our results suggest an approach to measuring the vacuum temperature and nondestructively sensing the presence of distant objects.Cruz I.Velasco Valerio Di Giulio F.Javier García de Abajo 2024Light(Science & Applications)2024,13,2:0
