| 2 | Rainfall interception by sand-stabilizing shrubs related to crown structure显示文摘On the edge of the Tengger Desert in northern China,revegetation has changed the landscape from moving dunes to stabilized dunes covered by shrubs,which further modifies the pattern of rainfall redistribution.To study rainfall interception loss by shrubs and its relationship to rainfall properties and crown structure,throughfalls passing through crowns of Artemisia ordosica Krash.and Caragana korshinskii Kom.were measured using nine PVC cups under the canopy of each of the two shrubs during 73 rain events over a three-year period,with total rainfall of 260.9 mm.Interception losses of gross rainfall by A.ordosica and C.korshinskii account for 15% and 27% of the total on a crown area basis,and 6% and 11% on a ground area basis,respectively.Individual throughfall(T) and interception(I) were significantly related to rainfall amount(Pg),duration(D),and intensity(R).Ratios of throughfall to rainfall(T/Pg) and interception to rainfall(I/Pg) were not only significantly related to Pg,D,and R,but also to shrub species,and interactions of species with crown volume(CV) and leaf area index(LAI).Under most rain events,interceptions by C.korshinskii with greater CV and LAI were significantly higher than those by A.ordosica,and more rainfall interception occurred at locations closer to the stems of the two shrubs.For C.korshinskii,I/Pg had a significant positive linear relation with CV and LAI,while T/Pg had a significant negative linear relation with them.CV has a greater influence on T/Pg and I/Pg than does LAI.Using a regression method,canopy water storage capacities are estimated to be 0.52 and 0.68 mm,and free throughfall coefficient to be 0.62 and 0.47 for A.ordosica and C.korshinskii,respectively. | ZhiShan Zhang 1*,XinRong Li 1,XueJun Dong 2,XiaoHong Jia 1,MingZhu He 1,HuiJuan Tan 1 1.Shapotou Desert Research and Experiment Station,Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Lanzhou,Gansu 730000,China.2.Central Grasslands Research Extension Center,North Dakota State University,Streeter,ND 58483,USA. | 2009 | Research in Cold and Arid Regions2009,1,2: | 9 |

| 4 | Fenton Reagent Generated in Electrolysis Cell and Its Usage in Degradation and Decolorization of Dyes显示文摘The Electro-chemistry process to produce Fenton reagents has been described. The in situ oxidation of dyes, acid chrome and alizarin red(Fenton reagents) with electrogenerated hydroxyl radicals was investigated. The \{ I-V \} cyclic voltammograms were measured. The redox peaks of the dyes were not observed in the treated dye solutions instead of a couple of O2/H2O2 redox peaks. The IR results indicate that acid chrome dye was decomposed into naphthylamine and phenol aminophenol sulfonic acid. The degradation and the decolorization of the dyes were comfirmed by the visible spectrum and the chemical analysis. | 5 | Immunization of mice with cells from juvenile worms of Schistosoma japonicum provides immunoprotection against schistosomiasis显示文摘To validate the protective efficacy against schistosomiasis by immunization with cells from juvenile Schistosoma japonicum in a murine model and to analyze possible factors related to protection, in this study, two independent repeated vaccination trials were performed. After three subcutaneous vaccina- tions, in trial one, in the absence of adjuvant, primary juvenile worm cells (pJCs) from S. japonicum induced remarkable average reductions in worm burden (54.3%), liver eggs per gram (LEPG) load (59.8%) as well as egg granulomas size (66.5%) compared to PBS control group (P<0.01), which were significantly higher than those elicited by fractions of juvenile worm cells (JCFs) or fractions of juvenile worms (JWFs) (P<0.05). Non-cell components of worms (WNCs) showed no significant protection. In trial two, compared to PBS control group, significant protective effect was also observed for cultured juvenile worm cells (cJCs) from S. japonicum with 58.4% worm reduction and 68.1% LEPG reduction (P<0.01). However, cultured adult worms cells (cACs) showed significantly higher worm burden (P<0.05) and egg burden (P<0.01) when compared to cJCs. Immunological analysis of trial two revealed that cJCs engendered a Th1-biased mixed Th1/Th2 type of immune response while cACs elicited a Th2-type response. | 8 | The ecohydrology of the soil-vegetation system restoration in arid zones: a review显示文摘Arid zones, which cover approximately 40 percent of the earth's land surface, support complicated and widely varied ecological systems. As such, arid zones are an important composition of the global terrestrial ecosystem, and water is the key and abiotic lim-ited factor in ecosystem-driven processes in these areas. Ecohydrology is a new cross discipline that provides, in an objective and comprehensive manner, novel ideas and approaches to the evaluation of the interaction and feedback mechanisms involved in the soil-vegetation systems in arid zones. In addition, ecohydrology provides a theoretical basis of ecological restoration that is cen-tered on vegetation construction. In this paper, long-term monitoring and local observations in the transitional belt between a de-sertified steppe and a steppified desert at the Shapotou Desert Research and Experiment Station, Tengger Desert, in northern China, were evaluated. The primary achievements and related research progress regarding ecohydrology in arid zones were analyzed and summarized, as a keystone, and the response of soil ecohydrological processes to the changes in the species composition, structure, and function of sandland vegetation was discussed. Meanwhile, the long-term ecological effects and mechanism of regulation of vegetation on soil habitat and on water-cycling were considered. After KCIin the pipette and NaCI in the external solution werereplaced by CsCI to block the potassium current,hyposmotic membrane stretch depolarized the membranepotential from -60.0 mV±-1.0mV to -44.8 mV±2.3mV(P<0.05), and atropine (1 pmol/L) inhibited thedepolarization of the membrane potential. | 10 | LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS IN SINE-GENERATED MEANDERING CHANNELS显示文摘The patterns (In flow plan) of rough turbulent steady flows in sine-generated meandering streams are investigated experimentally. The flow cross-section is rectangular, the flow width is uniform, the channel bed is flat; the plan shape is sine-generated. In contrast to previous works, where the computed flow patterns were of the same character, irrespective of the sinuosity of the channel, it is found, on the basis of present experiments, that every different Plan geometry of a meandering flow has its own flow picture. In the case of 'small' sinuosity, the flow convectively accelerates at the inner bank between the crossover-and apexsections; if, however, the sinuosity is 'large', the now convectively decelerates in the same region. The convergence-divergence areas (in flow Plan) of the present flows are in coincidence with the location of erosion-deposition zones in meandering streams, confirming that the convective behaviour of the vertically-averaged flow alone is sufficient to induce the bed and bank deformation. | A. Results showed that the level of ING1 mRNA could be upregulated by 5-FU treatment or ING1 transfection in low expression cell line of MCF-7 and be inhibited by silencing p53 with RNAi technology in normal expression cell line of CNE2.
