Effect of honey on bacterial translocation and intestinal morphology in obstructive jaundice显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the effects of honey on bacterial translocation and intestinal villus histopathology in experimental obstructive jaundice.METHODS:Thirty Wistar-Albino rats were randomly divided into three groups each including 10 animals:group Ⅰ,sham-operated;group Ⅱ,ligation and section of the common bile duct(BDL);group Ⅲ,bile duct ligation followed by oral supplementation of honey(BDL+honey) 10 g/kg per day.Liver, blood, spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes, and ileal samples were taken for microbiological, light and transmission electrone microscopic examination.RESULTS:Although the number of villi per centimeter and the height of the mucosa were higher in sham group, there was no statistically significant difference between sham and BDL + honey groups(P>0.05).On the other hand, there was a statistically significant difference between BDL group and other groups(P<0.05).The electron microscopic changes werealso different between these groups.Sham and honey groups had similar incidence of bacterial translocation(P>0.05).BDL group had significantly higher rates of bacterial translocation as compared with sham and honey groups.Bacterial translocation was predominantly detected in mesenteric lymph nodes.CONCLUSION:Supplementation of honey in presence of obstructive jaundice ameliorates bacterial translocation and improves ileal morphology. | Cem Gencay Kemal Kismet Bulent Kilicoglu Serap Erel Mehmet Ali Akkus Sibel Serin Kilicoglu Sabahattin Muratoglu Asli Elif Sunay Esra Erdemli | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,21: | 8
Cytoprotective effects of amifostine, ascorbic acid and N-acetylcysteine against methotrexate-induced hepatotoxicity in rats显示文摘AIM:To investigate the potential role of oxidative stress and the possible therapeutic effects of N-acetyl cysteine(NAC),amifostine(AMF)and ascorbic acid(ASC)in methotrexate(MTX)-induced hepatotoxicity.METHODS:An MTX-induced hepatotoxicity model was established in 44 male Sprague Dawley rats by administration of a single intraperitoneal injection of20 mg/kg MTX.Eleven of the rats were left untreated(Model group;n=11),and the remaining rats were treated with a 7-d course of 50 mg/kg per day NAC (MTX+NAC group;n=11),50 mg/kg per single dose AMF(MTX+AMF group;n=11),or 10 mg/kg per day ASC(MTX+ASC group;n=11).Eleven rats that received no MTX and no treatments served as the negative control group.Structural and functional changes related to MTX-and the various treatments were assessed by histopathological analysis of liver tissues and biochemical assays of malondialdehyde(MDA),superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase, glutathione(GSH)and xanthine oxidase activities and of serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin.RESULTS:Exposure to MTX caused structural and functional hepatotoxicity,as evidenced by significantly worse histopathological scores[median(range)injury score:control group:1(0-3)vs 7(6-9),P=0.001]and significantly higher MDA activity[409(352-466)nmol/g vs 455.5(419-516)nmol/g,P<0.05].The extent of MTX-induced perturbation of both parameters was reduced by all three cytoprotective agents, but only the reduction in hepatotoxicity scores reached statistical significance[4(3-6)for NAC,4.5(3-5)for AMF and 6(5-6)for ASC;P=0.001,P=0.001 and P<0.005vs model group respectively].Exposure to MTX also caused a significant reduction in the activities of GSH and SOD antioxidants in liver tissues[control group:3.02(2.85-3.43)μmol/g and 71.78(61.88-97.81)U/g vs model group:2.52(2.07-3.34)μmol/g and 61.46(58.27-67.75)U/g,P<0.05];however,only the NAC treatment provided significant increases in these antioxidant enzyme activities[3.22(2.54-3.62)μmol/g and 69.22(61.13-100.88)U/g,P<0.05 and P<0.01vs model group respectively].CONCLUSION:MTX-induced structural and functional damage to hepatic tissues in rats may involve oxidative stress, and cytoprotective agents(NAC>AMF>ASC)may alleviate MTX hepatotoxicity. | Sami Akbulut Hulya Elbe Cengiz Eris Zumrut Dogan Gulten Toprak Emrah Otan Erman Erdemli Yusuf Turkoz | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,29: | 3
Lung parenchymal changes in patients with ankylosing spondylitis显示文摘AIM: To assess lung parenchymal changes in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) using high resolution computed tomography (HRCT). METHODS: We included 78 AS patients whose average age was 33.87 (18-56) years with a ratio of 53 males to 25 females who were followed up for 3.88 (1-22) years on average. neumonia and tuberculosis were excluded. In a detailed examination of lung HRCT findings, we investigated the presence of parenchymal micronodules, parenchymal bands, subpleural bands, interlobular and intralobular septal thickening, irregularity of interfaces, ground glass opacity, consolidation, mosaic pattern, bronchial wall thickening, bronchial dilatation, tracheal dilatation, pleural thickening, emphysema, thoracic cage asymmetry, honeycomb appearance, structural distortion, apical fibrosis and other additional findings.RESULTS: In detailed HRCT evaluations, lung parenchymal changes were found in 46 (59%) of all patients. We found parenchymal bands in 21 (27%) cases, interlobular septal thickening in 9 (12%), emphysema in 9 (12%), apical fibrosis in 8 (10%), ground-glass opacities in 7 (9%), parenchymal micronodules in 5 (6%), irregularity in interfaces in 3 (4%), bronchial dilatation in 3 (4%), mosaic pattern in 2 (3%), pleural thickening in 2 (3%), consolidation in 1 (1%), bronchial wall thick ening in 1 (1%) and a subpleural band in 1 (1%) case. Furthermore, we detected subsegmental atelectasis in 2 patients and a cavitary lesion in 1 patient. CONCLUSION: Our study had the highest number of AS cases of all previous studies in evaluating lung paren chymal changes. The rate of lung parenchymal changes was slightly lower than that reported in recent literature. | Zehra Isik Hasiloglu Nuri Havan Aylin Rezvani Mustafa Akif Sariyildiz Halil Eren Erdemli Ilhan Karacan | 2012 | World Journal of Radiology2012,4,5: | 3
Ultrastructural view of colon anastomosis under propolis effect by transmission electron microscopy显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the effect of propolis administration on the healing of colon anastomosis with light and transmission electron microscopes. METHODS: Forty-eight Wistar-Albino female rats were divided into two groups and had colon resection and anastomosis. In group Ⅰ, rats were fed with standard rat chow pre- and postoperatively. The rats in group Ⅱ were fed with standard rat chow and began receiving oral supplementation of propolis 100 mg/kg per day beginning 7 d before the operation and continued until they were sacrificed. Rats were sacrificed 1, 3, 7 and 14 d after operation, and anastomotic bursting pressures measured. After the resection of anastomotic segments, histopathological examination was performed with light and transmission electron microscopes by two blinded histologists and photographed. RESULTS: The colonic bursting pressures of the propolis group were statistically significantly better than the control group. Ultrastructural histopathological analysis of the colon anastomosis revealed that propolis accelerated the phases of the healing process and stimulated mature granulation tissue formation and collagen synthesis of fibroblasts. CONCLUSION: Bursting pressure measurements and ultra structural histopathological evaluation showedthat administration of propolis accelerated the healing of colon anastomosis following surgical excision. | Sibel Serin Kilicoglu Bulent Kilicoglu Esra Erdemli | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,30: | 2
Effects of honey as a scolicidal agent on the hepatobiliary system显示文摘AIM: To examine the effects of 10% diluted honey, which has been shown to be scolicidal, on the liver and biliary system and determine whether it could be used as a scolicidal agent in the presence of biliary-cystic communication. METHODS: Thirty Wistar-Albino rats were divided into two groups. Honey with 10% dilution in the study group and 0.9% saline (NaCl) in the control group were injected into the common bile ducts of rats through a 3-mm duodenotomy. The animals were sacrificed 6 mo after the procedure. Histopathological, biochemical, and radiological examinations were performed for evaluation of side effects. RESULTS: At the end of the sixth month, liver function tests were found to be normal in both groups. The tissue samples of liver and ductus choledochus of the honey group showed no histomorphologic difference from the control group. No stricture on the biliary tree was detected on the retrograde cholangiograms. CONCLUSION: According to these results, we concluded that 10% diluted honey could be used as scolicidal agent safely in the presence of biliary-cystic communication. | Bulent Kilicoglu Kemal Kismet Sibel Serin Kilicoglu Serap Erel Omur Gencay Kadriye Sorkun Esra Erdemli Okan Akhan Mehmet Ali Akkus Iskender Sayek | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,13: | 2
