| 1 | Pulmonary vein stenosis:Etiology,diagnosis and management显示文摘Pulmonary vein stenosis(PVS) is rare condition characterized by a challenging diagnosis and unfavorable prognosis at advance stages. At present, injury from radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation has become the main cause of the disease. PVS is characterized by a progressive lumen size reduction of one or more pulmonary veins that, when hemodynamically significant, may raise lobar capillary pressure leading to signs and symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough, and hemoptysis. Image techniques(transesophageal echocardiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance and perfusion imaging) are essential to reach a final diagnosis and decide an appropriate therapy. In this regard, series from referral centers have shown that surgical and transcatheter interventions may improve prognosis. | 2 | Structural, compositional and mineralogical characterization of carbonatitic copper sulfide: Run of mine, concentrate and tailings显示文摘The aim of this study was to determine the structural, compositional, and mineralogical composition of carbonatitic copper sulfide concentrator plant streams. Three samples, each from a different stream(run of mine(ROM), concentrate, and tailings) of a copper concentrator were characterized using various techniques, including stereomicroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) in conjunction with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS), and optical microscopy. The results reveal that each stream possesses its own unique compositional features. Carbonate minerals associated with calcite and dolomite, followed by quartz, remain the major minerals in both the ROM and tails streams. In the ROM stream, chalcopyrite appears to occur as veins within the carbonatite-hosting ore body. Mineral phase mutation was discovered in the tails stream because magnetite formerly identified in the ROM as the primary iron oxide had evolved into hematite. This metamorphosis was likely promoted by the concentration process. The concentration process was effective, upgrading the chalcopyrite content from 2 wt% in the ROM stream to 58 wt% in the concentrate stream; it was accompanied by bornite(4 wt%), anilite(3 wt%), and digenite(2.5 wt%). In addition, the concentrate stream exhibited properties distinctive from those of the other streams. The FTIR analysis showed the existence of a sulfide group related to the chalcopyrite mineral. Free chalcopyrite grains were observed in the concentrate by SEM analysis, and their mineral presence was supported by the EDS analysis results. | 5 | The role of genomic structural variation in the genetic improvement of polyploid crops显示文摘Many of our major crop species are polyploids, containing more than one genome or set of chromosomes. Polyploid crops present unique challenges, including difficulties in genome assembly, in discriminating between multiple gene and sequence copies, and in genetic mapping, hindering use of genomic data for genetics and breeding. Polyploid genomes may also be more prone to containing structural variation, such as loss of gene copies or sequences(presence–absence variation) and the presence of genes or sequences in multiple copies(copynumber variation). Although the two main types of genomic structural variation commonly identified are presence–absence variation and copy-number variation, we propose that homeologous exchanges constitute a third major form of genomic structural variation in polyploids. Homeologous exchanges involve the replacement of one genomic segment by a similar copy from another genome or ancestrally duplicated region, and are known to be extremely common in polyploids. Detecting all kinds of genomic structural variation is challenging, but recent advances such as optical mapping and long-read sequencing offer potential strategies to help identify structural variants even in complex polyploid genomes. All three major types of genomic structural variation(presence–absence, copy-number, and homeologous exchange) are now known to influence phenotypes in crop plants, with examples of flowering time, frost tolerance, and adaptive and agronomic traits. In this review,we summarize the challenges of genome analysis in polyploid crops, describe the various types of genomic structural variation and the genomics technologies and data that can be used to detect them, and collate information produced to date related to the impact of genomic structural variation on crop phenotypes. | 6 | Capacity gaps in health facilities for case management of intestinal schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Burundi显示文摘Background:Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis(STH)are endemic diseases in Burundi.STH control is integrated into health facilities(HF)across the country,but schistosomiasis control is not.The present study aimed to assess the capacity of HF for integrating intestinal schistosomiasis case management into their routine activities.In addition,the current capacity for HF-based STH case management was evaluated.Methods:A random cluster survey was carried out in July 2014,in 65 HF located in Schistosoma mansoni and STH endemic areas.Data were collected by semi-quantitative questionnaires.Staff with different functions at the HF were interviewed(managers,care providers,heads of laboratory and pharmacy and data clerks).Data pertaining to knowledge of intestinal schistosomiasis and STH symptoms,human and material resources and availability and costs of diagnostic tests and treatment were collected.Findings:Less than half of the 65 care providers mentioned one or more major symptoms of intestinal schistosomiasis(abdominal pain 43.1%,bloody diarrhoea 13.9%and bloody stool 7.7%).Few staff members(15.7%)received higher education,and less than 10%were trained in-job on intestinal schistosomiasis case management.Clinical guidelines and laboratory protocols for intestinal schistosomiasis diagnosis and treatment were available in one third of the HF.Diagnosis was performed by direct smear only.Praziquantel was not available in any of the HF.The results for STH were similar,except that major symptoms were more known and cited(abdominal pain 69.2%and diarrhoea 60%).Clinical guidelines were available in 61.5%of HF,and albendazole or mebendazole was available in all HF.Conclusions:The current capacity of HF for intestinal schistosomiasis and STH detection and management is inadequate.Treatment was not available for schistosomiasis.These issues need to be addressed to create an enabling environment for successful integration of intestinal schistosomiasis and STH case management into HF routine activities in Burundi for better control of these diseases. | Paul Bizimana Katja Polman Jean-Pierre Van Geertruyden Frederic Nsabiyumva Celine Ngenzebuhoro Elvis Muhimpundu Giuseppina Ortu | 2018 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1: | 2 |
