| 5 | Functionality of dietary antimicrobial peptides in aquatic animal health:Multiple meta-analyses显示文摘Effects of antimicrobial peptides(AMP)added to diets on aquatic animal health and body function are influenced by multiple factors such as animal species,initial body weight,the dosage of AMP and feeding duration.However,there is limited knowledge on the relationship between these factors and the body function of aquatic animals.Here,we aimed to perform multiple meta-analyses to investigate the effects of dietary AMP on growth performance(feed conversion ratio[FCR],specific growth rate[SGR]),enzyme activity(superoxide dismutase activity[SOD],lysozyme activity[LSA]),disease resistance(cumulative survival rate[CSR],the expression of immune-related genes[GENE])and the abundance of gut microbiota(MICRO)from a pool of empirical studies.Additionally,the dose-effect model was applied to determine the optimal AMP dose,initial body weight and feeding duration to maximize body function.To conduct the meta-analyses,we included 34 publications that estimated 705 effect sizes across 21 fish,2 shrimp and 2 shellfish species.The results confirmed that the inclusion of AMP in the diet can significantly improve SGR,SOD,LSA,CSR and GENE and decrease FCR for aquatic animals.Interestingly,our findings implied a slight positive effect of AMP on MICRO albeit with a limited number of studies available on fish gut microbial communities.Although no significant linear or quadratic relationship was predicted by meta-regression,the dose-effect indicated that the optimal AMP doses for FCR,SGR,SOD and LSA were 707.5,750.0,1,050.0 and 937.5 mg/kg,respectively.Taken together,fish with an initial body weight of 30 g could be fed with a dose of 600 to 800 mg/kg for 2 mo when AMP-supplemented diets were applied in aquaculture,which can effectively improve body function and health while lowering aquafeed costs.In addition,more studies should address fish gut microbiota to delimitate the influence of dietary AMP on MICRO in the future. | Jinhai Wang Alan E.Wilson Baofeng Su Rex A.Dunham | 2023 | Animal Nutrition2023,,1: | 2 |

| 10 | Effects of purposeful soccer heading on circulating small extracellular vesicle concentration and cargo显示文摘Background:Considering the potential cumulative effects of repetitive head impact(HI)exposure,we need sensitive biomarkers to track shortand long-term effects.Circulating small extracellular vesicles(sEVs)(<200 nm)traffic biological molecules throughout the body and may have diagnostic value as biomarkers for disease.The purpose of this study was to identify the microRNA(miRNA)profile in circulating sEVs derived from human plasma following repetitive HI exposure.Methods:Healthy adult(aged 18-35 years)soccer players were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups:the HI group performed 10 standing headers,the leg impact group performed 10 soccer ball trapping maneuvers over 10 min,and the control group did not participate in any soccer drills.Plasma was collected before testing and 24 h afterward,and sEVs were isolated and characterized via nanoparticle tracking analysis.Next-generation sequencing was utilized to identify candidate miRNAs isolated from sEVs,and candidate microRNAs were analyzed via quantitative polymerase chain reaction.In silico target prediction was performed using TargetScan(Version 7.0;targetscan.org)and miRWalk(http://gffzzd93d5b8fada64be9hpwnb9vxkknon6ukc.ffgz.tsg.suse.edu.cn/)programs,and target validation was performed using luciferase reporter vectors with a miR-7844-5p mimic in human embryonic kidney(HEK)293T/17 cells.Results:Plasma sEV concentration and size were not affected across time and group following repetitive HI exposure.After 24 h,the HI read count from next-generation sequencing showed a 4-fold or greater increase in miR-92b-5p,miR-423-5p,and miR-24-3p and a 3-fold or greater decrease in miR-7844-5p,miR-144-5p,miR-221-5p,and miR-22-3p.Analysis of quantitative polymerase chain reaction revealed that leg impact did not alter the candidate miRNA levels.To our knowledge,miR-7844-5p is a previously unknown miRNA.We identified 8 miR-7844-5p mRNA targets:protein phosphatase 1 regulatory inhibitor subunit 1B(PPP1R1B),LIM and senescent cell antigen-like domains 1(LIMS1),autophagy-related 12(ATG12),microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 beta(MAP1LC3B),integrin subunit alpha-1(ITGA1),mitogenactivated protein kinase 1(MAPK1),glycogen synthase kinase 3b(GSK3b),and mitogen-activated protein kinase 8(MAPK8).Conclusion:Collectively,these data indicate repetitive HI exposure alters plasma sEV miRNA content,but not sEV size or number.Furthermore,for the first time we demonstrate that previously unknown miR-7844-5p targets mRNAs known to be involved in mitochondrial apoptosis,autophagy regulation,mood disorders,and neurodegenerative disease. | Eric R.Munoz Jaclyn B.Caccese Brittany E.Wilson Kyle T.Shuler Fernando V.Santos Carolina T.Caban John J.Jeka Dianne Langford Matthew B.Hudson | 2021 | Journal of Sport and Health Science2021,10,2: | 1 |

| 15 | Hospitalizations and healthcare costs associated with serious, non-lethal firearm-related violence and injuries in the United States, 1998-2011显示文摘Objective:To describe the prevalence,trends,correlates,and short-term outcomes of inpa-tient hospitalizations for firearm-related injuries(FRIs)in the United States between 1998 and 2011.Methods:We conducted a retrospective,cross-sectional analysis of inpatient hospitalizations using data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample.In addition to generating national prevalence estimates,we used survey logistic regression to calculate odds ratios(ORs)and 95%confidence intervals(CIs)for the association between FRIs and patient/hospital-level characteristics.Tempo-ral trends were estimated and characterized using joinpoint regression.Results:There were 10.5 FRIs(95%CI:9.2-11.8)per 10,000 non-maternal/neonatal inpatient hospitalizations,with assault accounting for 60.1%of FRIs,followed by unintentional/accidental(23.0%)and intentional/self-inflicted FRIs(8.2%).The highest odds of FRIs,particularly FRIs associated with an assault,was observed among patients 18-24 years of age,patients 14-17 years of age,patients with no insurance/self-pay,and non-Hispanic blacks.The mean inpatient length of stay for FRIs was 6.9 days;however,4.7%of patients remained in the hospital over 24 days and 1 in 12 patients(8.2%)died before discharge.The mean cost of an inpatient hospitalization for a FRI was$22,149,which was estimated to be$679 million annually;approximately two-thirds of the annual cost(64.7%)was for assault($439 million).Conclusion:FRIs are a preventable public health issue which disproportionately impacts younger generations,while imposing significant economic and societal burdens,even in the ab-sence of fatalities.Prevention of FRIs should be considered a priority in this era of healthcare cost containment. | Jason L.Salemi Vikas Jindal RoneéE.Wilson Mulubrhan F.Mogos Muktar H.Aliyu Hamisu M.Salihu | 2015 | Family Medicine and Community Health2015,3,2: | 0 |
