3OBJECTIVE ESTIMATION OF THE RADIUS OF THE OUTERMOST CLOSED ISOBAR IN TROPICAL CYCLONES显示文摘Increased understanding of the importance of TC structure in dynamical,climatological and prediction studies makes determination of TC size important. A new algorithm for the objective estimation of the radius of outermost closed isobar(roci) has been developed. The new method uses storm position and global analyses of mean sea level pressure to compute a mean(axisymmetric) roci. This radius can be used,together with the central pressure,for the construction of a synthetic vortex that is initialized in a numerical prediction model. The method also has important applications in dynamical and climatological studies of TC intensity,size and structure. The algorithm is robust and capable of estimating roci,even in the case of a weak system that may not have a closed isobar in the global analysis. The values produced by the new method are shown to be more consistent than the corresponding operational estimates which are subjective and produced under strong time constraints. Statistical comparison between subjective and objective estimates gives a mean absolute difference of 110 km,which given the difficulty in making a subjective estimate,is satisfactory. In addition,even though limitations exist with the estimates of vortex parameters like the radius to gales(r34),comparison with estimates from an extended best track data set provides independent evaluation of the scheme. Mean absolute difference for r34 for around 3200 cases is near 80 km,even though the best track estimates are subjective and the objective r34 is estimated only from storm central pressure and the objective roci. 4Application of Vegetation Indices for Detection and Monitoring Oil Spills in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State,Nigeria显示文摘The study evaluated the environmental effects of an oil spill in Joinkrama 4 and Akimima Ahoada West LGA,Rivers State,Nigeria,using various vegetation indices.Location data for the spill were obtained from the Nigeria Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency,and Landsat imagery was acquired from the United States Geological Survey.Three soil samples were collected from the affected area,and their analysis included measuring total petroleum hydrocarbons(TPH),total hydrocarbons(THC),and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH).The obtained data were processed with ArcGIS software,utilizing different vegetation indices such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI),Atmospheric Resistant Vegetation Index(ARVI),Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index(SAVI),Green Short Wave Infrared(GSWIR),and Green Near Infrared(GNIR).Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel.The results consistently indicated a negative impact on the environment resulting from the oil spill.A comparison of spectral reflectance values between the oil spill site and the non-oil spill site showed lower values at the oil spill site across all vegetation indices(NDVI 0.0665-0.2622,ARVI-0.0495-0.1268,SAVI 0.0333-0.1311,GSWIR-0.183-0.0517,GNIR-0.0104--0.1980),indicating damage to vegetation.Additionally,the study examined the correlation between vegetation indices and environmental parameters associated with the oil spill,revealing significant relationships with TPH,THC,and PAH.A t-test with a significance level of p<0.05 indicated significantly higher vegetation index values at the non-oil spill site compared to the oil spill site,suggesting a potential disparity in vegetation health between the two areas.Hence,this study emphasizes the harmful effect of oil spills on vegetation and highlights the importance of utilizing vegetation indices and spectral reflectance analysis to detect and monitor the impact of oil spills on vegetation.Jonathan Lisa Erebi Egirani E.Davidson 2023Journal of Geographical Research2023,6,3:0
5Enhanced Electric Power Adaptability Using Hybrid Pumped-Hydro Technology with Wind and Photovoltaic Integration显示文摘The integration of solar and wind energy into the electrical grid has received global research attention due to their unpredictable characteristics.Because wind energy varies across all timescales of utility activity,renewable energy generation should be supplemented and enhanced,from real-time,minute-to-minute variations to annual alterations influencing long-termstrategy.Wind energy generation does not only fluctuate but is also challenging to accurately forecast the timeframes of significance to electricity decision makers;day-ahead and long-term making plans of framework sufficiency such as meeting the network peak load annually.A utility that integrates wind and solar energy into its electricity mix would understand how to adapt to uncertainty and variability in operations while sustaining grid stability.Due to hydropower’s adaptability,a system using hydropower as one of its generating resources could be precisely adapted to absorb the variability of wind and solar energy.The objective of this research study is to create a hybrid system comprising hydro-wind and solar(Hybrid-HWS)integration for power balancing in an isolated electrical network in Klipkop village,Pretoria region,South Africa.The desirability of designing and building goaf storage tank in regard to capability,the fullness of line throughoutwater pumping,dispensing,storage tank spillage,and pressure difference throughout liquid flow within the storage tanks were preliminary assessed using geotechnical and weather forecasting data from a distinctive area of Klipkop town in Pretoria,South Africa.Different facility hours premised on daylight accessibility are scheduled to balance maximum load at early and late hours.However,in the scenario of electrical power,time shift requiring storage for extended periods of time,such as in terms of hours,Hybrid-HWS has been found to have a crucial role.The results of simulations showed a coordinated process design for Hybrid-HWS Energy Storage(ES)to determine everyday strategic planning in reducing the variability of the system resulting from wind-solar-pumped hydro ES output inadequacies and satisfy daily load demands.It could be recommended that by considering the adaptability characteristics,extremely rapidly,ramping,peaking support and maximum stabilizing aid of the system could be archived with pump-hydro into the energy mix which can provide specific guidelines for energy policymakers.Uwem O.Ikitde Abayomi A.Adebiyi Innocent E.Davidson Ayodeji S.Akinyemi 2023Energy Engineering2023,120,9:0

7DOWNSTREAM DEVELOPMENT DURING THE EXTRATROPICAL TRANSITION OF TROPICAL CYCLONES:OBSERVATIONAL EVIDENCE AND INFLUENCE ON STORM STRUCTURE显示文摘Observational evidence is presented that during Extratropical Transition(ET) of Tropical Cyclones(TCs),Downstream Development(DD) is frequently underway.We show that DD results in rapid changes to the environment.A critical flow change is the development of a low-level trough,sandwiched between two developing anticyclones.The trough appears to merge with the storm,seemingly holding it upright and allowing it to withstand the damaging effects of wind shear.In this way the storm can eventually reach the favourable equatorward entrance region of the upper jet.To evaluate the mechanism,two sets of simulations have been run:one using high-resolution,full physics integrations and another using coarse-resolution with dry physics and the TC removed from the initial condition.We show that the dry dynamics can establish the large scale environment to enable the transition to proceed.The process can produce:(a) the deep,vertically-aligned,low-level pressure trough that merges with the storm,and(b) a partial inhibition through subsidence to embedded convection,allowing the boundary layer to moisten via(i) sustained surface fluxes,and(ii) enhanced horizontal moisture flux convergence from the environmental flow changes.This produces potential for more intense convective activity and vortex resiliency even in relatively strong,deep vertical wind shear.LILI LIU NOEL E.DAVIDSON HONGYAN ZHU CHARLIE C.F.LOK 2012Tropical Cyclone Research and Review2012,1,4:0
8Updates in endocrine therapy for metastatic breast cancer显示文摘Endocrine therapy(ET)remains the mainstay of treatment for steroid hormone receptor-positive,human epidermal growth factor 2(HER2)-negative metastatic breast cancer(MBC).Tumor resistance to hormone therapy has led to the development of novel endocrine drug combinations,transforming the landscape of MBC management.The options for ET are expanding,with promising agents in the pipeline.Although MBC remains incurable,many patients can enjoy years of survival with good quality of life by cycling through the many available agents.With the plethora of available agents and rapid approvals,clinicians look to evidencebased guidelines to assist in treatment selection to maximize patient well-being.In this review,we provide a contemporary review of the advances in ET and a suggested algorithm to guide clinicians in daily management of patients with hormone receptor-positive,HER2-negative MBC.We will discuss landmark trials and highlight their impact in reshaping treatment approaches.Finally,we will provide a glimpse into advances on the horizon and the promise they bring to improve outcomes in patients with advanced breast cancer.Poorni M.Manohar Nancy E.Davidson 2022Cancer Biology & Medicine2022,19,2:0
