2Thermal energy storage:Challenges and the role of particle technology显示文摘Thermal energy is at the heart of the whole energy chain providing a main linkage between the primary and secondary energy sources.Thermal energy storage(TES)has a pivotal role to play in the energy chain and hence in future low carbon economy.However,a competitive TES technology requires a number of scientific and technological challenges to be addressed including TES materials,TES components and devices,and integration of TES devices with energy networks and associated dynamic optimization.This paper provides a perspective of TES technology with a focus on TES materials challenges using molten salts based phase change materials for medium and high temperature applications.Two key challenges for the molten salt based TES materials are chemical incompatibility and low thermal conductivity.The use of composite materials provides an avenue to meeting the challenges.Such composite materials consist of a phase change material,a structural supporting material,and a thermal conductivity enhancement material.The properties of the supporting material could determine the dispersion of the thermal conductivity enhancement material in the salt.A right combination of the salt,the structural supporting material,and the thermal conductivity enhancement material could give a hierarchical structure that is able to encapsulate the molten salt and give a substantial enhancement in the thermal conductivity.Understanding of the structure-property relationships for the composite is essential for the formulation design and fabrication of the composite materials.Linking materials properties to the system level performance is recommended as a key future direction of research.Zhiwei Ge Yongliang Li Dacheng Li Ze Sun Yi Jin Chuanping Liu Chuan Li Guanghui Leng Yulong Ding 2014Particuology2014,12,4:20
3Carbonate-salt-based composite materials for medium- and high-temperature thermal energy storage显示文摘This paper discusses composite materials based on inorganic salts for medium- and high-temperature thermal energy storage application.The composites consist of a phase change material(PCM),a ceramic material,and a high thermal conductivity material.The ceramic material forms a microstructural skeleton for encapsulation of the PCM and structural stability of the composites;the high thermal conductivity material enhances the overall thermal conductivity of the composites.Using a eutectic salt of lithium and sodium carbonates as the PCM,magnesium oxide as the ceramic skeleton,and either graphite flakes or carbon nanotubes as the thermal conductivity enhancer,we produced composites with good physical and chemical stability and high thermal conductivity.We found that the wettability of the molten salt on the ceramic and carbon materials significantly affects the microstructure of the composites.Zhiwei Ge Feng Ye Hui Cao Guanghui Leng Yue Qin Yulong Ding 2014Particuology2014,12,4:19
4A one-step method for producing microencapsulated phase change materials显示文摘This short communication reports our recent work on the synthesis and characterisation of microcapsules of phase change materials using silica as the shell material through a one-step method.The method uses no surfactants or dispersants for stabilising the capsules.The results show that the one-step method allows the tuning of the size and polydispersity of the capsules,and the use of different core materials.Analyses of the capsules show that they contain about 65%phase change materials.The results also suggest no need for a stabilising agent due to self-stabilisation by the amine groups.Further work is underway to investigate the mechanical and thermal properties of the microcapsules and the scale-up of the method.Yi Jin Waipeng Lee Zenfira Musina Yulong Ding 2010Particuology2010,8,6:14
5ZnO nanofluids-A potential antibacterial agent显示文摘In this work, ZnO nanofluids were produced by a medium mill with a pH value of about 7.2 and characterized by Nano-Sizer and SEM. After milling, ZnO nanofluids were formed with an average particle size of 198.4 nm. The ZnO nanofluids used for testing were stored for different periods (1-, 90- and 120-day) and kept in different conditions (under the light and in the dark). The antibacterial activities of these ZnO nanofluids were evaluated by estimating the reduction ratio of the bacteria treated with ZnO. The results showed that the ZnO nanofluid stored for 120 days under the light had the best antibacterial behavior against Escherichia coli DH5a. 6Multi-walled carbon nanotubes added to Na_2CO_3/MgO composites for thermal energy storage显示文摘Na_2CO_3/MgO composites with added multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) were prepared and tested as phase change materials(PCMs) for thermal energy storage.Na_2CO_3/MgO composite PCMs were prepared and their chemical compatibility and thermal stability were studied.MWCNTs introduced with Na_2CO_3/MgO composite PCMs were also investigated and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) characterization was used to demonstrate the uniform dispersion of MWCNTs in Na2C03/MgO composite PCMs.The composites with added MWCNTs still display good thermal stability with mass losses lower than 5%.Introducing MWCNTs into composite Na_2CO_3/MgO PCMs by material formation/calcination significantly enhances the thermal conductivity of the composite PCMs.The thermal conductivity of the composite PCMs was found to increase with an increase in the weight fraction of the added MWCNTs and an increase in the testing temperature.This study may present a promising way to prepare high temperature phase change materials with superior properties such as improved thermal stability.Feng Ye Zhiwei Ge Yulong Ding Jun Yang 2014Particuology2014,12,4:13
7Responses of wheat seedlings to cadmium,mercury and trichlorobenzene stresses显示文摘The molecular response of wheat(Triticum aestivum L.,cv.Yangmai 13) seedlings to heavy metal(Cd,Hg) and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene(TCB) stresses were examined by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis,image analysis,and peptide mass fingerprinting.The results showed inhibitions of root and shoot growth by Cd,Hg,and TCB.These stresses led to water deficit and lipid phosphorylation in the seedling which also promoted protein phophorylation in the leaves.Hg stress inhibited protein synthesis while Cd and TCB stresses induced or up-regulated more proteins in the leaves.Most of these induced proteins played important roles in the biochemical reactions involved in tolerance of wheat to Cd and TCB stresses.The primary functions of Cd-and TCB-induced proteins included methionine metabolism,Rubisco modification,protein phosphorylation regulation,protein configuration protection,H+ transmembrane transportation and also the synthesis of ethylene,defense substances and cell wall compounds.GE Cailin DING Yan WANG Zegang WAN Dingzhen WANG Yulong SHANG Qi LUO Shishi 2009Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,6:12
8Macleaya cordata extract alleviated oxidative stress and altered innate immune response in mice challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli显示文摘This study examines the effects of dietary Macleaya cordata extract(MCE) on bacterial burden and resistance to enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC) in ICR mice. ICR mice were randomly distributed into one of the following groups:(i) basal diet;(ii)basal diet with 200 mg kg–1 MCE;(iii) basal diet challenged with ETEC;and(iv) basal diet with 200 mg kg–1 MCE and challenged with ETEC. Following a 7-day period of pre-treatment, CTRL-ETEC and MCE-ETEC mice were subjected to oral infection using 5×108 E. coli SEC 470. The results showed dietary 200 mg kg–1 MCE markedly reduced intestinal ETEC burden(P<0.05) and the disease-associated mortality was significantly alleviated in the MCE treated group(P<0.05). In addition,dietary MCE markedly alleviated ETEC-induced oxidative stress, evidenced by the lowered methane dicarboxylic aldehyde(MDA) abundance and enhanced activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase(P<0.05). Furthermore, MCE mice exhibited higher immune activity, which might have further mediated ETEC infection. These results indicate MCE plays a preventative role with respect to ETEC infection. 10Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation of distinct clustering phenomena and RTDs in riser and downer显示文摘Numerical simulation of fully developed hydrodynamics of a riser and a downer was carried out using an Eulerian-Lagrangian model, where the particles are modeled by the discrete element method (DEM) and the gas by the Navier-Stokes equations. Periodic flow domain with two side walls was adopted to simulate the fully developed dynamics in a 2D channel of 10 cm in width. All the simulations were carried out under the same superficial gas velocity and solids holdup in the domain, starting with a homogenous state for both gas and solids, and followed by the evolution of the dynamics to the heterogeneous state with distinct clustering in the riser and the downer. In the riser, particle clusters move slowly, tending to suspend along the wall or to flow downwards, which causes wide residence time distribution of the particles. In the downer, clusters still exist, but they have faster velocities than the discrete particles. Loosely collected particles in the clusters move in the same direction as the bulk flow, resulting in plug flow in the downer. The residence time distribution (RTD) of solids was computed by tracking the displacements of all particles in the flow direction. The results show a rather wide RTD for the solids in the riser but a sharp peak RTD in the downer, much in agreement with the experimental findings in the literature. 13Epidermal growth factor improves intestinal morphology by stimulating proliferation and differentiation of enterocytes and mTOR signaling pathway in weaning piglets显示文摘Epidermal growth factor(EGF) has been shown to improve piglet intestinal morphology and epithelial recovery. In an attempt to further understand the mechanisms behind these improvements, this study tested the hypothesis that dietary EGF may affect intestinal morphology by stimulating the proliferation and differentiation of enterocytes in weaning piglets. In piglets receiving200 μg kg^-1 EGF, crypt depth and villus height increased(P<0.05). Adding 400 μg kg^-1 EGF increased villus height-to-crypt depth ratio(P<0.05), but reduced crypt depth(P<0.05). Dietary supplementation with 200 μg kg^-1 EGF significantly increased the number of Ki67-positive cells(P<0.01) and tended to increase the mRNA level of proliferating cell nuclear antigen(P<0.10).However, this supplementation decreased the expression level of intestinal fatty acid-binding protein(P<0.05). Piglets fed with400 μg kg^-1 EGF had an increased mRNA level of intestinal alkaline phosphatase(P<0.05). The phosphorylation of m TOR(mammalian target of rapamycin) was observed in the 200 μg kg^-1 EGF group. 15Convective heat transfer characters of nanoparticle enhanced latent functionally thermal fluid显示文摘The latent heat of the microencapsulated phase change material(MPCM)increases the effective ther-mal capacity of latent functionally thermal fluid.However,researchers found that the heat transfer performance of such fluids was diminished due to the reduction of the low thermal conductivity of MPCM.For this reason,the nanoparticle enhanced latent functionally thermal fluids were formulated and the heat transfer behaviors of these fluids in a vertical circular tube at the laminar regime were conducted.The result showed that slurries containing 0.5% TiO2 nanoparticles by mass and 5%―20% MPCM by mass exhibited improved heat transfer rates in comparison with the conventional latent functionally thermal fluid and that the enhancement increased with the increasing MPCM concentration and up to 18.9% of the dimensionless wall temperature was reduced.WANG Liang LIN GuiPing CHEN HaiSheng DING YuLong 2009Science China(Technological Sciences)2009,52,6:4
16Granular porous calcium carbonate particles for scalable and high-performance solar-driven thermochemical heat storage显示文摘Calcium carbonate is promising thermochemical heat storage material for next-generation solar power systems due to its high energy storage density,low cost,and high operation temperature.Researchers have tried to improve energy storage performances of calcium carbonate recently,but most researches focus on powders,which are not suitable for scalable applications.Here,novel granular porous calcium carbonate particles with very high solar absorptance,energy storage density,abrasive resistances,and energy storage rate are proposed for direct solar thermochemical heat storage.The average solar absorptance is improved by 234%compared with ordinary particles.Both cycle stability and abrasive resistances are excellent with almost no decay of energy storage density over 25 cycles nor apparent particle weight loss over 24 h of continuous operation insides a planetary ball mill.In addition,the decomposition temperature is reduced by 2.8%–5.6%while the reaction rate of heat storage is enhanced by 80%–205%depending on the CO_(2) partial pressure.The decomposition process of doped granular porous CaCO_(3) particles is found to involve three overlapping processes.This work provides new routes to achieve scalable direct solar thermochemical heat storage for next-generation high-temperature solar power systems.SONG Chao LIU XiangLei XUAN YiMin ZHENG HangBin GAO Ke TENG Liang DA Yun LI Chuan LI YongLiang DING YuLong 2021Science China(Technological Sciences)2021,64,10:4
17Study on Forced Convective Heat Transfer of Non-Newtonian Nanofluids显示文摘This paper is concerned with the forced convective heat transfer of dilute liquid suspensions of nanoparticles(nanofluids) flowing through a straight pipe under laminar conditions. Stable nanofluids are formulated by usingthe high shear mixing and ultrasonication methods. They are then characterised for their size, surface charge,thermal and theological properties and tested for their convective heat transfer behaviour. Mathematical modellingis performed to simulate the convective heat transfer of nanofluids using a single phase flow model and consideringnanofluids as both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid. Both experiments and mathematical modellingshow that nanofluids can substantially enhance the convective heat transfer. 18Fabrication of form stable NaCl-Al2O3 composite for thermal energy storage by cold sintering process显示文摘A form stable NaCl-Al2O3(50-50 wt-%)composite material for high temperature thermal energy storage was fabricated by cold sintering process,a process recently applied to the densification of ceramics at low temperature 300℃ under uniaxial pressure in the presence of small amount o f transient liquid.The fabricated composite achieved as high as 98.65% of the theoretical density.The NaCl-Al2O3 composite also retained the chloride salt without leakage after 30 heating-cooling cycles between 750℃-850℃ together with a holding period o f 24h at 850℃.X-ray diffraction measurements indicated congruent solubility o f the alumina in chloride salt,excellent compatibility o f NaCl with Al2O3,and chemical stability at high temperature.Structural analysis by scanning electron microscope also showed limited grain growth,high density,uniform NaCl distribution and clear faceted composite structure without inter-diffusion.The latent heat storage density o f 252.5J/g was obtained from simultaneous thermal analysis.Fracture strength test showed high sintered strength around 5 GPa after 50 min.The composite was found to have fair mass losses due to volatilization.Overall,cold sintering process has the potential to be an efficient,safe and cost-effective strategy for the fabrication of high temperature thermal energy storage materials.Rilvaminu Suleiman Qinghua Yu Yulong Ding Yongliang Li 2019Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering2019,13,4:4
19Synthesis and Characterization of Disodium Hydrogen Phosphate Dodecahydrate-Lauric-Palmitic Acid Used for Indoor Energy Storage Floor Units显示文摘Organic and inorganic phase change materials(PCMs) are considered potential materials for thermal energy storage(TES) with different phase change characteristics. In this study, a novel organic-inorganic composite phase change material(PCM) called disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate-lauric-palmitic acid(D-LA-PACM) was prepared. Expanded graphite(EG) was selected as the support material, and the novel organic-inorganic form-stable PCM called D-LA-PAPCM/EG was prepared using the vacuum adsorption method. Differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, leakage testing, melting and solidification cycle testing, thermal conductivity testing, scanning electron microscopy observation of the micromorphology, and other characterization methods were used to study the microstructure and morphology, thermal physical parameters, thermal conductivity, stability of the PCMs, and the comprehensive material properties of D-LA-PAPCM under the composite action of EG. Results indicated that the melting and freezing temperatures and latent heats of D-LA-PAPCM/EG were measured to be 31.6℃ and 34.3℃ and 142.9 and 142.8 J/g, respectively. Although some of the lauric-palmitic acid(LA-PA) and disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate(DHPD) separated in the multiple porous structures of EG after 1000 cycles, they could still absorb and release latent heats independently, with D-LA-PAPCM/EG still exhibiting good thermal stability. The thermal conductivity of D-LA-PAPCM/EG was 1.361 W/(m·K).
