1Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in asymptomatic Brazilian adolescents显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) among asymptomatic Brazilian adolescents. METHODS:Transversal observational study included asymptomatic adolescents with central obesity from private and public schools in Salvador-Bahia,northeastern Brazil.The children answered a questionnaire that included age,gender,race,and medical history,and were submitted to a complete physical exam and abdominal ultrasound.Biochemical exams included:ALT,AST,GGT,C reactive protein(CRP),fasting glucose,insulin,cholesterol and triglycerides.Criteria for NAFLD included:the presence of steatosis in ultrasound and/or high level of ALT,negative or occasional historic of intake of alcohol(≤140 g/wk),negative investigation for hepatitis A,B,C,auto-immune hepatitis,Wilson disease and hemochromatosis.RESULTS:From October,2005 to October,2006,the study included 1801 subjects between 11 and 18 years of age and a mean age of 13.7±2.0 years.One hundred ninety-nine had central obesity.The prevalence of NAFLD was 2.3%,most of whom were male and white.Insulin resistance(IR)was observed in 22.9% of them and had positive correlations with ALT and GGT(P<0.05).Elevated CRP was observed in 6.9% of the cases;however,it was not associated with WC,IR or liver enzymes. 6Litterfall dynamics and soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in the Brazilian palm swamp ecosystems显示文摘Background: This study aimed to determine the litterfall production, accumulation, decomposition rate and nutrient stocks, and to estimate the soil carbon(C) and nitrogen(N) stocks in three palm swamp ecosystems with different land use intensities in the Southeast of Brazil.Methods: Three palm swamp ecosystems with different land use intensities were evaluated: Agua Doce(AD),conserved area;Capivara(CV), area with small agricultural practices;and Buriti Grosso(BG), area with an intensive land use. Produced and accumulated litterfall from the Cerrado areas surrounding the palm swamps were collected from October 2014 to September 2015, and the Ca, Mg, K, and P concentrations were determined in the dry and rainy seasons. Soil samples were collected in the surrounding Cerrado and within the palm swamps until 100 cm soil depth to determine bulk density and soil C and N contents and stocks.Results: Annual litterfall production in the Cerrado surrounding palm swamps was similar in AD(3.58 Mg·ha^-1·year^-1) and CV(3.79 Mg·ha^-1·year^-1), and was lower in BG(2.84 Mg·ha^-1·year^-1), and was more intense during the dry season. Furthermore, litterfall accumulation was higher in CV(7.12 Mg·ha^-1·year^-1) and BG(6.75 Mg·ha^-1·year^-1), culminating in lower decomposition rates. AD showed the highest decomposition rate(0.60) due to its vegetation structure and conservation. The macronutrient contents from the production and accumulated litterfall had a low influence of the land use, decreasing in the following order: Ca > K > Mg > P. Soils in CV and BG palm swamp areas showed higher values of C and N contents, due to the use of land for agricultural crops and cattle raising in an extensive(rangeland) system. 10Valorization of semi-solid by-product from distillation of cellulosic ethanol into blends for heating and power显示文摘Burning down on semi-solid by-product from distillation of cellulosic ethanol to power upstream steps of its manufacturing is usual.However,this feedstock is homogenous in size and shape,hygroscopic and poorly energetic.These disadvantages make its re-use in the industrial plant very complex.Conversion of this agro-residue into high-performance blends for heating and power is,accordingly,the scientific point of this study.The pilot-scale manufacturing of composite pellets consisted of systematically pressing the residue with sugarcane bagasse at the mass ratios of 1:4,2:4,and 3:4 on an automatic pelletizer machine at 200 MPa and 125℃.The process of compaction lasted for 90 s.Durability and energy density,both increased significantly,from 95.85%to 99.55%and from 27.95 GJ m^(−3) to 32.20 GJ m^(−3) with blending at 3:4.Practically,the semi-solid by-product considerably improved the feeding,thus,enabling the layers of particles to go smoothly through the channel-forming die of the machine.Thereby,blends became stiffer and denser than pellets purely consisting of sugarcane bagasse.Preliminary evidence of the process of pelleting capable of highly valorizing the semi-solid by-product from distillation of cellulosic bioethanol into mechanically stable and energetically effective hybrid fuel grade biosolids exist.The major findings of this paper should be of great relevance to ensure safe and effective transportation and storage of biomass in indoor facili-ties where the risk for the generation of dust and fines and the subsequent off-gassing and self-firing is high.Furthermore,pelletization may optimize the co-generation of heat and steam at the large-scale bioethanol station.Bruno Rafael de Almeida Moreira Victor Hugo Cruz Matheus Luís Oliveira Cunha Nathaly Proença Lopes Anderson Chagas Magalhães Celso Tadao Miasaki JoséClaudio Caraschi Ronaldo da Silva Viana 2021Waste Disposal and Sustainable Energy2021,3,1:1
11Is the EGFR pathway relevant for the pathogenesis but not for treatment of acute myeloid leukemia?显示文摘Despite intense research and the development of several new chemotherapeutics,the prognosis for specific subsets of acute myeloid leukemia(AML)has not improved significantly.Thus,the investigation of signaling pathways associated with the pathogenesis and progression of AML has become a source for the discovery of more effective treatments.The epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR)belongs to the HER family of tyrosine kinase(TK)receptors and is involved in the progression of a variety of solid tumors.Although the expression of members of the HER family appears to be limited to epithelial tissues and derived neoplasms,there is evidence demonstrating their role in hematopoiesis and hematological neoplasms.In AML,preclinical studies and two anecdotal cases of response to EGFR TK inhibitors(TKI)supported the EGFR signaling pathway as a potential therapeutic target.Indeed,the presence of EGFR ligands in the bone marrow microenvironment has been shown to play pathological and regenerative/protective roles in AML.However,data reporting the expression of EGFR in AML remain controversial and the EGFR pathway inhibition in AML patients has demonstrated limited clinical significance.Further studies are required to determine the relevance of the EGFR pathway in AML biology and which patients may benefit from using EGFR TKI or other drugs that target TK receptors.Luciana Yamamoto de Almeida Eduardo Magalhães Rego 2021Journal of Cancer Metastasis and Treatment2021,7,1:0
12Preemptive endoluminal vacuum therapy after pancreaticoduodenectomy: A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Pancreaticoduodenectomy is a technically demanding operation,with reported morbidity rates of approximately 40%-50%.A novel idea is to use endoscopic vacuum therapy(EVT)in a preemptive setting to prevent anastomotic leakage and pancreatic fistulas.In a recent case series,EVT was proven to be effective in preventing leaks in patients with anastomotic ischemia.There have been no previous reports on preemptive EVT after pancreaticoduodenectomy.CASE SUMMARY We describe the case of a 71-year-old woman with hypertension and diabetes who was admitted to the emergency room with jaundice,choluria,fecal acholia,abdominal pain,and fever.Admission examinations revealed leukocytosis and hyperbilirubinemia(total:13 mg/dL;conjugated:12.1 mg/dL).Abdominal ultrasound showed cholelithiasis and dilation of the common bile duct.Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a stenotic area,and a biopsy confirmed cholangiocarcinoma. 13Vegetation structure and edaphic factors in veredas reflect different conservation status in these threatened areas显示文摘Background:In Cerrado humid areas,veredas are considered as hygrophilous communities,marked by the presence of the Mauritia flexuosa palm tree emerging in the wetter zones.Changes in veredas ecosystems due to drought and changes in the water table,which represent important areas for biodiversity maintenance in the Brazilian cerrado,can lead to the emergence of new landscapes and ecosystems.Assuming that the veredas are changed in species composition due to anthropogenic factors,in this study,we evaluated the flora composition and described the current vegetation profile of two veredas under different disturbances levels that are located in the north of Minas Gerais State,Brazil.Results:Altogether,2,268 individuals of 91 species belonging to 36 families were recorded.Our results demonstrated that the studied veredas were floristically different in terms of the arboreous-shrubby species composition,richness,and diversity.Despite the hygrophilous forest formations and open areas in the two veredas present typical species from these environments(same species with high importance values),the drought in the water table caused an expansion of Cerrado species in the open areas and in the hygrophilous forest.Furthermore,in the hygrophilous forest there was an increase in the abundance of species that occur in less saturated soils.Conclusion:Our results demonstrate that the studied veredas are changing in species composition due to anthropogenic factors which leads to the drought of these formations(water balance effect).These anthropogenic effects cause a modification with the expansion and increase in the abundance of typical species of other areas of Cerrado and resistant to less saturated soils,leading to the veredas collapse.Finally,future studies should investigate other veredas on a broader scale to detect changes in the water table that lead to a consequent change in vegetation structure.In this way,we will have support for the conscientious management and conservation of these areas that represent equilibrium places for the Cerrado biome.Yule Roberta Ferreira Nunes Camila Silveira Souza Islaine Francielly Pinheiro de Azevedo Odirlei Simôes de Oliveira Leidivan Almeida Frazão Rúbia Santos Fonseca Rubens Manoel dos Santos Walter Viana Neves 2022Forest Ecosystems2022,9,3:0
14Lessons and challenges for the recycling sector of Brazil from the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19显示文摘The 2019-2020 coronavirus pandemic imposed unprecedented challenges in Brazilian governance sectors,mostly in the waste management system.Herein,we analyse the main challenges of the recycling sector in Brazil to cope with this scenario.Understanding difficulties during the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19 can help improve waste recycling in the post-pandemic period in Brazil and other developing nations that face similar issues.The current pandemic exposed the deficiencies of this system,and some important lessons can be learned.Recommendations are drawn to advance the proper management of recyclables in the country.The Government must increase total investments in the recycling industry’s infrastructure and support local recycling initiatives during a public health crisis and beyond.In sum,this paper strengthens the idea that waste segregation at the source and selective collection will not be sufficient without massive investments in the recycling sector’s infrastructure.The future challenge includes strengthening the economic markets for recycled materials.Ronei de Almeida Roberta Guimarães de Souza Juacyara Carbonelli Campos 2021Waste Disposal and Sustainable Energy2021,3,2:0
15Biomass-glycerol briquettes are not necessarily mechanically stable and energetically effective显示文摘The re-use of glycerol from biodiesel industry as an alternative lubricant for making high-performance briquettes is usual.However,the technical performance of this agro-industrial residue is not consistent.This study outlines,accordingly,the real risk of introducing glycerol into the co-briquetting of highly caloric by-products of energy-crops.The production of hybrid briquettes consisted of pressing mixtures of residues of sugarcane and sorghum with the liquid additive at 10,20,and 30 wt.%in bench-scale hydraulic piston presser machine.Irrespective of the blend,briquettes containing the supplement at the highest level as part of their composition ended up being much more hygroscopic(20.10%)and less energetic(3.15 GJ m^(−3)).The explanation for the negative impact of glycerol on the thermomechanical behavior of briquettes would be overconcen-tration of additive capable of effectively defying compacting biomass.The degree of compaction during co-briquetting has likely gone down quickly with a maximizing level of glycerol.As long as the additive is not able to lubricate the feedstock suitably,improbability of biomass particles to successfully bond together to form themselves into mechanically stable and energetically effective briquettes is large.Besides lower density(273.80 kg m^(−3))and higher relaxation(22.75%),briquettes with glycerol at 30 wt.%generally were aesthetically unpleasing.Practically,these products resisted no longer to handling,transportation,and storage.They lost their shape easily during emptying and shifting them,thus,releasing larger quanti-ties of biomass to the environment.Preliminary evidence of high-viscosity glycerol capable of limiting safe and effective production of high-performance briquettes for heating and power exists.Bruno Rafael de Almeida Moreira Ronaldo da Silva Viana Samuel Dias Moreira Monique dos Santos Lima Anderson Chagas Magalhães Celso Tadao Miasaki JoséClaudio Caraschi 2020Waste Disposal and Sustainable Energy2020,2,4:0
16The first case report of Leishmania(leishmania) chagasi in Panthera leo in Brazil显示文摘We reported here the first known case of natural infection of a lion(Panthera leo-Linnaeus,1738) with Leishmania(Leithmania) chagasi(L.chagasi) in Brazil.The specimen was created by a circus handler in the state of Mato Grosso and was donated to the zoological park of the Federal University of Mato Crosso.Infection by I.chagasi was detected using a PCR-RFLP test.It was known that the domestic felids can act as reservoir of infection of L.chagasi in endemic areas, making it important that studies demonstrate their participation in the epidemiological chain. 17Larvicidal Evaluation of Aedes aegypti and Antioxidant,Cytotoxic and Antimicrobial Potential of the Aqueous Acid Extract of Pseudoxandra cuspidata(ANNOACEAE).显示文摘The Anonnaceae family has 2,500 species and 135 genera, which has about 14 representatives of species in Brazil,including Pseudoxandra cuspidata. The objective of this research was to study the aqueous-acid extract of P. cuspidata, evaluatingits antioxidant, larvicidal, antimicrobial and cytotoxic potential. In the preliminary phytochemical analysis, there were positivity toorganicacids and alkaloids. Inhibitory Activity of EAA was 65% against DPPH. The AAE presented to A. Salina nauplii at LC50%of 600.79 μg/mL for a periodof 24 hours. In relation to larvicidal activity to Aedes aegypti intermediates, AAE presented the LC50%in 24 Hours of 475.91 ppm and 290.73 ppm in 48 Hours. Regarding the antimicrobial action, the EAA presented 50 mg/mL MIC forP. Aeruginosa and MBC at 100 mg/mL, and for S. aureus it presented MIC of 50 mg/mL and did not present MBC. This researchcharacterized the presence of alkaloids and organicacids present in the aqueousacid extract of P. cuspidata. The extract presentedlowtoxicity in relation to the microcrustacean A. salina. It also had a relevant antioxidant potential (65% of Inhibition),larvicidalaction considered effective, antimicrobialaction for both P. Aeruginosa and S.
