1Genome survey uncovers the secrets of sex and lifestyle in caterpillar fungus显示文摘The caterpillar fungus Ophiocordyceps sinensis (best known as Cordyceps sinensis) mummifies ghost moth larvae exclusively in Tibetan Plateau alpine ecosystems. Touted as 'Himalayan Viagra', the fungus is highly prized due to its medical benefits and dwindling supplies. Attempts to culture the sexual fruiting-body have failed and the huge market demand has led to severe devastation of local ecosystems and to the fungus heading towards extinction. By genome sequencing, we establish that unlike related insect pathogens O. sinensis contains two compatible mating-type genes in its genome and is self-fertile, i.e. homothallic. However, sexual processes are only initiated under native environmental conditions. O. sinensis resembles biotrophic plant pathogens in having a genome shaped by retrotransposon-driven expansions. The resulting changes in gene content suggest that O. sinensis has a biphasic pathogenic mechanism beginning with stealth pathogenesis in early host instars. O. sinensis is the first psychrophilic fungus sequenced and is adapted to extreme cold with putative antifreeze proteins and mechanisms for increasing lipid accumulation and fatty acid unsaturation. We hypothesize that for the inbreeding O. sinensis the massive proliferation of retrotransposons provides a tradeoff between the advantages of increased genetic variation independent of sexual recombination and deletion of genes dispensable for its specialized pathogenic lifestyle.HU Xiao ZHANG YongJie XIAO GuoHua ZHENG Peng XIA YongLiang ZHANG XingYu ST LEGER Raymond J LIU XingZhong WANG ChengShu 2013Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,23:26
2A draft sequence of the rice (Oryza sativa ssp. indica) genome显示文摘The sequence of the rice genome holds fundamental information for its biology, including physiology, genetics, development, and evolution, as well as information on many beneficial phenotypes of economic significance. Using a 'whole genome shotgun' approach, we have pro-duced a draft rice genome sequence of Oryza sativa ssp. in-dica, the major crop rice subspecies in China and many other regions of Asia. The draft genome sequence is constructed from over 4.3 million successful sequencing traces with an accumulative total length of 2214.9 Mb. The initial assembly of the non-redundant sequences reached 409.76 Mb in length, based on 3.30 million successful sequencing traces with a total length of 1797.4 Mb from an indica variant cultivar 93-11, giving an estimated coverage of 95.29% of the rice genome with an average base accuracy of higher than 99%. 3Grafting Onto Artemisia annua Improves Drought Tolerance in Chrysanthemum by Enhancing Photosynthetic Capacity显示文摘Drought stress drastically influences the yield and quality of chrysanthemums, and thus grafting has been widely used to improve tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. To explore the mechanisms underlying improvements in drought resistance afforded by grafting,we investigated the changes in growth, gas exchange,ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase(Rubisco)expression and activity, sugar components, and the relative expression of photosynthesis-related genes of chrysanthemum(Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.‘Hangbaiju')plants grafted onto Artemisia annua rootstocks under drought stress by withholding water for 6 d.The results revealed that the growth declines in the grafted chrysanthemums were relatively lower than those of the non-grafted plants under drought stress, and net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, and transpiration rate in the non-grafted chrysanthemums were significantly decreased. Moreover, the intercellular CO_2 concentrations were significantly increased compared with the grafted plants at 5 and 6 d following drought stress. The grafted plants exhibited higher relative expression of the Cmrbc L,Cmrbc S,Cmpsa B,and Cmcab genes,as well as higher Rubisco activity and chlorophyll content under the drought treatment.Sugar accumulation also increased under drought stress, particularly in the non-grafted plants. This result suggested that non-grafted chrysanthemums were less able to resist dehydration, and repressed the genes encoding the expression of photosynthetic components. In conclusion, using A.annua rootstock could alleviate drought stress in chrysanthemums by improving gas exchange capacity and maintaining Cmrbc L,Cmrbc S,Cmcab, and Cmpsa B gene expression, thereby increasing Rubisco activity and improving photosynthetic performance.CHEN Yue SUN Xianzhi ZHENG Chengshu ZHANG Sheng YANG Jinghui 2018Horticultural Plant Journal2018,4,3:3

6Identification of a key G-protein coupled receptor in mediating appressorium formation and fungal virulence against insects显示文摘Fungal G-protein coupled receptors(GPCRs)play essential roles in sensing environmental cues including host signals. The study of GPCR in mediating fungus-insect interactions is still limited. Here we report the evolution of GPCR genes encoded in the entomopathogenic Metarhizium species and found the expansion of Pth11-like GPCRs in the generalist species with a wide host range.By deletion of ten candidate genes MrGpr1–MrGpr10 selected from the six obtained subfamilies in the generalist M.robertsii,we found that each of them played a varied level of roles in mediating appressorium formation. In particular, deletion of MrGpr8 resulted in the failure of appressorium formation on different substrates and the loss of virulence during topical infection of insects but not during injection assays when compared with the wild-type(WT)strain.Further analysis revealed that disruption of MrGpr8 substantially impaired the nucleus translocation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)Mero-Fus3 but not the MAPK Mero-Slt2 during appressorium formation. We also found that the defect ofΔMrGpr8 could not be rescued with the addition of cyclic AMP for appressorium formation.Relative to the WT,differential expression of the selected genes have also been detected inΔMrGpr8.The results of this study may benefit the understanding of fungus-interactions mediated by GPCRs.Junmei Shang Yanfang Shang Guirong Tang Chengshu Wang 2021Science China(Life Sciences)2021,64,3:1

11Sequence Stratigraphy and Tectonic Environment of the Chartai Group,Inner Mongolia显示文摘The Middle Proterozoic Chartai Group separated by two unconformities consists of three depositional se-quences: the Shujigou Formation-Zenglongchang Formation (DS Ⅰ), the Agulugou Formation (DS Ⅱ), andthe Liuhongwan Formation (DS Ⅲ). The carbonate platform and back-platform basin are the basic environ-ment model of the Chartai Group. The syndepositional faults on the oceanward side of the carbonate platformand large-scale slumping in the soft sediments are important marks of facies tracts. The newly establishedZenglongchan uplifting, an epeirogenetic uplifting, plays an important role in the formation of thepalaeogeographic framework of the Chartai Group. The stratigraphic correlation between the Chartai Groupand the Bayan Obo Group is made for the first time by using sequence stratigraphic principle and model estab-lished by P.R. Vail. The Chartai Group, which was deposited on the northern passive continental margin of theNorth China platfom, represents the platform cover.Qiao Xiufu Yao Peiyi Wang Chengshu Tan Lin Zhu Shenyu Zhou Shengde Zhang Yuqing Institute of Geology,Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Beijing Regional Geological Survey Party,Geological Bureau of Inner Mongolia,Hohhot Sun Sheping 1991Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)1991,65,3:1

18Lee–Yang zeros in the Rydberg atoms显示文摘Lee–Yang (LY) zeros play a fundamental role in the formulation of statistical physics in terms of (grand) partition functions, and assume theoretical significance for the phenomenon of phase transitions. In this paper, motivated by recent progress in cold Rydberg atom experiments, we explore the LY zeros in classical Rydberg blockade models. We find that the distribution of zeros of partition functions for these models in one dimension (1d) can be obtained analytically. We prove that all the LY zeros are real and negative for such models with arbitrary blockade radii. Therefore, no phase transitions happen in 1d classical Rydberg chains. We investigate how the zeros redistribute as one interpolates between different blockade radii. We also discuss possible experimental measurements of these zeros.Chengshu Li Fan Yang 2023Frontiers of physics2023,18,2:0
19Gene expression profiling of cells of origin of squamous cell carci no mas in head-and-neck,esophagus,and lung显示文摘Multiple primary malignant neoplasms are defined as two or more metachronous or synchronous separate ncoplasms in the same organ or difrent sites[1].Multiple primary squamous cell carcinomas(MPSCCs)are SCCs originated from mulriple anatomical locations that share common squamous differentiation histomorphology and expressions of markers, which makes it difcult to identify whether the subsequent SCCs are metastatic lesion of the first tumor or other primary SCC&,prticularly metachronous SCCs.Identification of novel sensitive biomarkers is still a priority to inprove dfferntial diagnosis of SCCs.Ning Qu Dongzhe Huang Qinghua Xu Jian Wang Chengshu Chen Qinghai Ji Weili Wu Yongxue Zhu Midie Xu 2020Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica2020,52,2:0
