1In vivo antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of methanolic extracts of Daucus carota seeds in experimental animals显示文摘Objective:To assess the In vivo anlioxid Fanl and hepaloproleclive activity of metlianolic exlracl of Daucus carota(D.carota) seeds in experimental animals. Methods:Methanolic extracts of D.carota seeds is used for hepatoproleclion assessment.Oxidative stress were induced in rats by thioacetamide 100 nig/kg s.c.in four groups of rats(two test, standard and toxic control). Two test groups received D.carota seeds extract[DCSE) at doses of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg. Standard group received silymarin(25 mg/kg) and toxic control received only thioacetamide. Control group received only vehicle. On the 8th day animals were sacrificed and liver enzyme like serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase(SGPT),serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase(SCOT) and alkaline phosphatase(ALP)were estimated in blood serum and antioxidant enzyme like superoxide disnuituse(SOD),cululase(CAT),glutathione reductase(CKD),glutathione peroxidase(GPX),glutalhione-S-transferase(GST)and lipid peroxidation(LPO)were estimated in liver homogcnatc. Results:A significant decrease in SGPT,SCOT and ALP levels was observed in all drug treated groups as compared to thioacetamide group(P<0.001) and in case of antioxidant enzyme a significant(P<0.001) increase in SOD.CAT,GRD,GPX and GST was observed in all dmg treated groups as compared with thioacetamide group. But in case of LPO a significant(P <0.001) reduction was observed as compared to toxic control group. Conclusions:DCSE has contributed lo the reduction of oxidative stress and the protection of liver in experimental rals.Kamlesh Singh Nisha Singh Anish Chandy Ashish Manigauha 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,5:6
2Genotype phenotype correlation in Wilson's disease within families-a report on four south Indian families显示文摘AIM: To study the genotype phenotype correlation in Wilson's disease (WD) patients within families. METHODS: We report four unrelated families from South India with nine members affected with WD. Phenotype was classified as per international consensus phenotypic classifi cation of WD. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and 21 exons of ATP7B gene and flanking introns were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR products were screened for mutations and the aberrant products noted on screening were sequenced. RESULTS: Four separate ATP7B mutations were found in the four families. ATP7B mutations were identical amongst affected members within each family. Three families had homozygous mutations of ATP7B gene while one family had compound heterozygous mutation, of which only one mutation was identifi ed. We noted concordance between ATP7B gene mutation and Wilson's disease phenotype amongst members within each family. The age of onset of symptoms or of detection of asymptomatic disease, baseline serum ceruloplasmin and baseline urinary copper levels were also similar in affected members of each family. Minor differences in phenotype and baseline serum ceruloplasmin level were noted in one family.CONCLUSION: We report concordance between ATP7B mutation and WD phenotype within each family with > 1 member affected with WD. Homozygous ATP7B mutation was present in 3 of the 4 families studied. Our report supports allelic dominance as a determinant of WD phenotype. However, in one family with compound heterozygous mutation, there was a similar WD phenotype which suggests that there may be other factors determining the phenotype.S Santhosh RV Shaji CE Eapen V Jayanthi S Malathi P Finny N Thomas M Chandy G Kurian GM Chandy 2008World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,29:3
3Prevalence of respiratory syncytial virus infection among children hospitalized with acute lower respiratory tract infections in Southern India显示文摘BACKGROUND Respiratory syncytial virus(RSV) is a leading cause of lower respiratory infections among children.AIM To investigate the proportion of RSV and non-RSV respiratory viral infections among hospitalized children ≤ 5 years.METHODS Hospitalized children aged < 5 years, with a diagnosis of acute lower respiratory infections(ALRI), admitted between August 2011-August 2013, were included.Cases were defined as laboratory-confirmed RSV and non-RSV respiratory viruses by direct fluorescence assay from the nasopharyngeal wash.RESULTS Of 383 1-59 mo old children hospitalized with an acute lower respiratory infection, 33.9%(130/383) had evidence of viral infection, and RSV was detected in 24.5%(94/383). Co-infections with RSV and other respiratory viruses(influenza A or B, adenovirus, para influenza 1, 2 or 3) were seen in children 5.5%(21/383). Over 90% of the RSV-positive children were under 2 years of age. RSV was detected throughout the year with peaks seen after the monsoon season.Children hospitalized with RSV infection were more likely to have been exposed to a shorter duration of breastfeeding of less than 3 mo. RSV positive children had a shorter hospital stay, although there were significant complications requiring intensive care. Use of antibiotics was high among those with RSV and non-RSV viral infections.CONCLUSION Our study provides evidence of a high proportion of RSV and other virusassociated ALRI among hospitalized children in India. RSV infection was associated with fewer days of hospital stay compared to other causes of lower respiratory infections. A high level of antibiotic use was seen among all respiratory virus-associated hospitalizations. These results suggest the need for implementing routine diagnostics for respiratory pathogens in order to minimize the use of unnecessary antibiotics and plan prevention strategies among pediatric populations.Sandesh Kini Bhuvanesh Sukhlal Kalal Sara Chandy Ranjani Shamsundar Anita Shet 2019World Journal of Clinical Pediatrics2019,8,2:3

5Total hip arthroplasty in fused hips with spine stiffness in ankylosing spondylitis显示文摘Ankylosing spondylitis(AS)is characterized by involvement of the spine and hip joints with progressive stiffness and loss of function.Functional impairment is significant, with spine and hip involvement, and is predominantly seen in the younger age group.Total hip arthroplasty(THA)for fused hips with stiff spines in AS results in considerable improvement of mobility and function.Spine stiffness associated with AS needs evaluation before THA.Preoperative assessment with lateral spine radiographs shows loss of lumbar lordosis.Spinopelvic mobility is reduced with change in sacral slope from sitting to standing less than 10 degrees conforming to the stiff pattern.Care should be taken to reduce acetabular component anteversion at THA in these fused hips,as the posterior pelvic tilt would increase the risk of posterior impingement and anterior dislocation.Fused hips require femoral neck osteotomy, true acetabular floor identification and restoration of the hip center with horizontal and vertical offset to achieve a good functional outcome.Cementless and cemented fixation have shown comparable long-term results with the choice dependent on bone stock at THA.Risks at THA in AS include intraoperative fractures, dislocation, heterotopic ossification, among others. There is significant improvement of functional scores and quality of life following THA in these deserving young individuals with fused hips and spine stiffness.Anil Thomas Oommen Triplicane Dwarakanathan Hariharan Viruthipadavil John Chandy Pradeep MathewPoonnoose Arun Shankar A Roncy Savio Kuruvilla Jozy Timothy 2021World Journal of Orthopedics2021,12,12:2
