1Ischemia/reperfusion injury and cardioprotective mechanisms:Role of mitochondria and reactive oxygen species显示文摘Reperfusion therapy must be applied as soon as possible to attenuate the ischemic insult of acute myocardial infarction(AMI).However reperfusion is responsible for additional myocardial damage,which likely involves opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore(mPTP).In reperfusion injury,mitochondrial damage is a determining factor in causing loss of cardiomyocyte function and viability.Major mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction include the long lasting opening of mPTPs and the oxidative stress resulting from formation of reactive oxygen species(ROS).Several signaling cardioprotective pathways are activated by stimuli such as preconditioning and postconditioning,obtained with brief intermittent ischemia or with pharmacological agents.These pathways converge on a common target,the mitochondria,to preserve their function after ischemia/reperfusion.The present review discusses the role of mitochondria in cardioprotection,especially the involvement of adenosine triphosphate-dependent potassium channels,ROS signaling,and the mPTP.Ischemic postconditioning has emerged as a new way to target the mitochondria,and to drastically reduce lethal reperfusion injury.Several clinical studies using ischemic postconditioning during angioplasty now support its protective effects,and an interesting alternative is pharmacological postconditioning.In fact ischemic postconditioning and the mPTP desensitizer,cyclosporine A,have been shown to induce comparable protection in AMI patients.Maria-Giulia Perrelli Pasquale Pagliaro Claudia Penna 2011World Journal of Cardiology2011,3,6:64
2Gut-liver axis and probiotics: Their role in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘The incidence of obesity and its related conditions, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD), has dramatically increased in all age groups worldwide. Given the health consequences of these conditions, and the subsequent economic burden on healthcare systems, their prevention and treatment have become major priorities. Because standard dietary and lifestyle changes and pathogenically-oriented therapies(e.g., antioxidants, oral hypoglycemic agents, and lipid-lowering agents) often fail due to poor compliance and/or lack of efficacy, novel approaches directed toward other pathomechanisms are needed. Here we present several lines of evidence indicating that, by increasing energy extraction in some dysbiosis conditions or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth,specific gut microbiota and/or a'low bacterial richness'may play a role in obesity,metabolic syndrome,and fatty liver.Under conditions involving a damaged intestinal barrier('leaky gut'),the gut-liver axis may enhance the natural interactions between intestinal bacteria/bacterial products and hepatic receptors(e.g.,toll-like receptors),thus promoting the following cascade of events:oxidative stress,insulinresistance,hepatic inflammation,and fibrosis.We also discuss the possible modulation of gut microbiota by probiotics,as attempted in NAFLD animal model studies and in several pilot pediatric and adult human studies.Globally,this approach appears to be a promising and innovative add-on therapeutic tool for NAFLD in the context of multi-target therapy.Giulia Paolella Claudia Mandato Luca Pierri Marco Poeta Martina Di Stasi Pietro Vajro 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,42:55
3东洞庭湿地植被格局变化及其影响因素显示文摘东洞庭湖(也称东洞庭)湿地植被格局的变化特征及其影响因素的分析是该地区湿地植被保护与恢复策略制定的基础。基于美国陆地资源卫星Landsat TM/ETM+数据,应用决策树分类法分别提取东洞庭湖1999年、2002年、2006年三个时期湿地景观信息,通过转移矩阵法和质心迁移法对植被的时空演变分析。结果表明:(1)1993~2002年东洞庭湖芦苇、林地、苔草滩地面积均有所增加,芦苇增长速度最快,年均增长面积为28.93km2;2002~2006年林地面积迅速增加,年均增长面积为29.655km2,苔草面积有所减少,芦苇面积保持基本稳定;(2)东洞庭湖湿地植被质心呈现从林地—芦苇—苔草逐层靠近湖心的分布特点,1993~2006年三种植被类型的质心均不断向湖心迁移,其中以林地与芦苇的变迁更为显著。雷璇 杨波 蒋卫国 杨一鹏 Claudia Kuenzer 陈强 2012地理研究2012,31,3:43
4Liver-specific gene expression in mesenchymal stem cells is induced by liver cells显示文摘AIM: The origin of putative liver cells from distinct bone marrow stem cells, e.g. hematopoietic stem cells or multipotent adult progenitor cells was found in recent in vitro studies. Cell culture experiments revealed a key role of growth factors for the induction of liver-specific genes in stem cell cultures. We investigated the potential of rat mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) from bone marrow to differentiate into hepatocytic cells in vitro. Furthermore,we assessed the influence of cocultured liver cells on induction of liver-specific gene expression.METHODS: Mesenchymal stem cells were marked with green fluorescent protein (GFP) by retroviral gene transduction. Clonal marked MSC were either cultured under liver stimulating conditions using fibronectin-coated culture dishes and medium supplemented with SCF, HGF,EGF, and FGF-4 alone, or in presence of freshly isolated rat liver cells. Cells in cocultures were harvested and GFP+ or GFP- cells were separated using fluorescence activated cell sorting. RT-PCR analysis for the stem cell marker Thy1 and the hepatocytic markers CK-18, albumin, CK-19,and AFP was performed in the different cell populations.RESULTS: Under the specified culture conditions, rat MSC cocultured with liver cells expressed albumin-, CK-18,CK-19, and AFP-RNA over 3 weeks, whereas MSC cultured alone did not show liver specific gene expression.CONCLUSION: The results indicate that (1) rat MSC from bone marrow can differentiate towards hepatocytic lineage in vitro, and (2) that the microenvironment plays a decisive role for the induction of hepatic differentiation of rMSC.Claudia Lange Philipp Bassler Michael V. 5Pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: Recent solutions, unresolved issues, and future research directions显示文摘Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) in children is becoming a major health concern. A 'multiple-hit' pathogenetic model has been suggested to explain the progressive liver damage that occurs among children with NAFLD. In addition to the accumulation of fat in the liver, insulin resistance(IR) and oxidative stress due to genetic/epigenetic background, unfavorable lifestyles, gut microbiota and gut-liver axis dysfunction, and perturbations of trace element homeostasis have been shown to be critical for disease progression and the development of more severe inflammatory and fibrotic stages [non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)]. Simple clinical and laboratory parameters, such as age, history, anthropometrical data(BMI and waist circumference percentiles), blood pressure, surrogate clinical markers of IR(acanthosis nigricans), abdominal ultrasounds, and serum transaminases, lipids and glucose/insulin profiles, allow a clinician to identify children with obesity and obesity-related conditions, including NAFLD and cardiovascular and metabolic risks. A liver biopsy(the 'imperfect' gold standard) is required for a definitive NAFLD/NASH diagnosis, particularly to exclude other treatable conditions or when advanced liver disease is expected on clinical and laboratory grounds and preferably prior to any controlled trial of pharmacological/surgical treatments. However, a biopsy clearly cannot represent a screening procedure. Advancements in diagnostic serum and imaging tools, especially for the non-invasive differentiation between NAFLD and NASH, have shown promising results, e.g., magnetic resonance elastography. Weight loss and physical activity should be the first option of intervention.Effective pharmacological treatments are still under development; however, drugs targeting IR, oxidative stress, proinflammatory pathways, dyslipidemia, gut microbiota and gut liver axis dysfunction are an option for patients who are unable to comply with the recommended lifestyle changes. 6Chemokine expression in hepatocellular carcinoma versus colorectal liver metastases显示文摘AIM: To evaluate and compare the expression profiles of CXCL12 (SDF-1), CCL19 (MIP-3β), CCL20 (MIP-3α) and CCL21 (6Ckine, Exodus2) and their receptors on RNA and protein levels in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) versus colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) and to elucidate their impact on the carcinogenesis and progression of malignant liver diseases. METHODS: Chemokine expression was analyzed by RT-PCR and ELISA in 11 cases of HCC specimens and in 23 cases of CRLM and corresponding adjacent non- tumorous liver tissues, respectively. Expressions of their receptors CXCR4, CCR6 and CCR7 were analyzed by RT- PCR and Western blot analysis in the same cases of HCC and CRLM. RESULTS: Significant up-regulation for CCL20/CCR6 was detected in both cancer types. Moreover, CCL20 demonstrated significant overexpression in CRLM in relation to the HCC tissues. Being significantly up- regulated only in CRLM, CXCR4 displayed an aberrant expression pattern with respect to the HCC tissues. CONCLUSION: Correlation of CXCR4 expression with CRLM suggests CXCR4 as a potential predictive factor for CRLM. 7Hypoxia,angiogenesis and liver fibrogenesis in the progression of chronic liver diseases显示文摘Angiogenesis is a dynamic,hypoxia-stimulated and growth factor-dependent process,and is currently referred to as the formation of new vessels from preexisting blood vessels.Experimental and clinical studies have unequivocally reported that hepatic angiogenesis,irrespective of aetiology,occurs in conditions of chronic liver diseases(CLDs) characterized by perpetuation of cell injury and death,inflammatory response and progressive fibrogenesis.Angiogenesis and related changes in liver vascular architecture,that in turn concur to increase vascular resistance and portal hypertension and to decrease parenchymal perfusion,have been proposed to favour fibrogenic progression of the disease towards the end-point of cirrhosis.Moreover,hepatic angiogenesis has also been proposed to modulate the genesis of portal-systemic shunts and increase splanchnic blood flow,thus potentially affecting complications of cirrhosis.Hepatic angiogenesis is also crucial for the growth and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma.Recent literature has identified a number of cellular and molecular mechanisms governing the cross-talk between angiogenesis and fibrogenesis,with a specifi c emphasis on the crucial role of hypoxic conditions and hepatic stellate cells,particularly when activated to the myofibroblast-like pro-fibrogenic.Experimental anti-angiogenic therapy has been proven to be effective in limiting the progression of CLDs in animal models.From a clinical point of view,anti-angiogenic therapy is currently emerging as a new pharmacologic intervention in patients with advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis.Claudia Paternostro Ezio David Erica Novo Maurizio Parola 2010World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,3:23

9Incidence of gallstone disease in Italy:Results from a multicenter,population-based Italian study (the MICOL project)显示文摘AIM:To evaluate gallstone incidence and risk factors in a large population-based study. METHODS: Gallstone incidence and risk factors, were evaluated by structured questionnaire and physical examination, respectively, in 9611 of 11 109 (86.5%) subjects who were gallstone-free at the cross-sectional study. RESULTS: Six centers throughout Italy enrolled 9611 subjects (5477 males, 4134 females, aged 30-79 years), 9517 of whom were included into analysis: 424 subjects (4.4%) had gallstones and 61 (0.6%) had been cholecystectomized yielding a cumulative incidence of 0.67% per year (0.66% in males, 0.81% in females). Increasing age, a high body mass index (BMI), a history of diabetes, peptic ulcer and angina, and low cholesterol and high triglyceride levels were identifi ed as risk factors in men while, in females, the only risk factors were increasing age and a high BMI.Increasing age and pain in the right hypocondrium in men and increasing age in females were identifi ed as predictors of gallstones. Pain in the epigastrium/ right hypocondrium was the only symptom related to gallstones; furthermore, some characteristics of pain (forcing to rest, not relieved by bowel movements) were significantly associated with gallstones. No correlation was found between gallstone characteristics and clinical manifestations, while increasing age in men and increasing age and BMI in females were predictors of pain. 10Role of IL-10 and TGF-β1 in local immunosuppression in HPV-associated cervical neoplasia显示文摘Cervical cancer is a worldwide disease that constitutes a significant public health problem, especially in developing countries, not only due to its high incidence but also because the most affected population comprises women who belong to marginalized socio-economic classes. Clinical and molecular research has identified immunological impairment in squamous intraepithelial cervical lesions and cervical cancer patients. Human Papillomavirus(HPV) has several mechanisms for avoiding the immune system: it down-regulates the expression of interferon and upregulates interleukin(IL)-10and transforming growth factor(TGF)-β1 to produce a local immunosuppressive environment, which, along with altered tumor surface antigens, forms an immunosuppressive network that inhibits the antitumor immune response. In this review we analyzed the available data on several deregulated cellular immune functions in patients with NIC Ⅰ, NIC Ⅱ and NIC Ⅲ and cervical cancer. The effects of immunosuppressive cytokines on innate immune response, T-cell activation and cellular factors that promote tumor cell proliferation in cervical cancer patients are summarized. We discuss the functional consequences of HPV E2, E6, and E7 protein interactions with IL-10 and TGF-β1 promoters in the induction of these cytokines and postulate its effect on the cellular immune response in squamous intraepithelial cervical lesions and cervical cancer patients. 11Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and diabetes: From physiopathological interplay to diagnosis and treatment显示文摘Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is highly prevalent in patients with diabetes mellitus and increasing evidence suggests that patients with type 2diabetes are at a particularly high risk for developing the progressive forms of NAFLD,non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and associated advanced liver fibrosis.Moreover,diabetes is an independent risk factor for NAFLD progression,and for hepatocellular carcinoma development and liver-related mortality in prospective studies.Notwithstanding,patients with NAFLD have an elevated prevalence of prediabetes.Recent studies have shown that NAFLD presence predicts the development of type2 diabetes.Diabetes and NAFLD have mutual pathogenetic mechanisms and it is possible that genetic and environmental factors interact with metabolic derangements to accelerate NAFLD progression in diabetic patients.The diagnosis of the more advanced stages of NAFLD in diabetic patients shares the same challenges as in non-diabetic patients and it includes imaging and serological methods,although histopathological evaluation is still considered the gold standard diagnostic method.An effective established treatment is not yet available for patients with steatohepatitis and fibrosis and randomized clinical trials including only diabetic patients are lacking.We sought to outline the published data including epidemiology,pathogenesis,diagnosis and treatment of NAFLD in diabetic patients,in order to better understand the interplay between these two prevalent diseases and identify the gaps that still need to be fulfilled in the management of NAFLD in patients with diabetes mellitus.Nathalie C Leite Cristiane A Villela-Nogueira Claudia R L Cardoso Gil F Salles 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,26:21
12液相萃取-高效液相色谱-串联质谱联用测定污泥中的全氟化合物显示文摘全氟化合物是一种新型持久性有机污染物,污水处理厂是其一个主要污染来源。目前还没有建立起一种统一的污泥样品中全氟化合物的分析方法。本文报道了一种基于液相萃取和高效液相色谱-串联质谱联用技术测定污泥中的7种全氟烷基羧酸及其2种不饱和氟调酸前体物、2种全氟烷基磺酸及其5种磺酰胺衍生物前体物的方法。实验对萃取剂(甲醇)的pH值、超声萃取温度与时间、洗脱剂体积进行了优化,确定了中性溶剂、40℃下超声萃取10min,Envicarbon柱净化的前处理方法,并成功地应用于实际污泥样品中全氟化合物的测定。方法的回收率为74%~141%(不饱和氟调酸除外),线性范围为0.1~20μg/L(羧酸系列)及0.25~50μg/L(磺酸系列)内线性关系良好(r2>0.99),定量限为0.6~30μg/kg(干重)。内标物质的使用可有效消除环境基质引起的仪器离子抑制现象,使定量更加准确。章涛 孙红文 ALDER Alfredo C. 13Small intestine bacterial overgrowth and irritable bowel syndrome-related symptoms:Experience with Rifaximin显示文摘AIM:To estimate the prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth(SIBO) in our geographical area(Western Sicily,Italy) by means of an observational study,and to gather information on the use of locally active,non-absorbable antibiotics for treatment of SIBO.METHODS:Our survey included 115 patients fulfilling the Rome □ criteria for diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome(IBS);a total of 97 patients accepted to perform a breath test with lactulose(BTLact),and those who had a positive test,received Rifaximin(Normix,Alfa Wassermann) 1200 mg/d for 7 d;3 wk after the end of treatment,the BTLact was repeated.RESULTS:Based on the BTLact results,SIBO was present in about 56% of IBS patients,and it was responsible for some IBS-related symptoms,such as abdominal bloating and discomfort,and diarrhoea.1-wk treatment with Rifaximin turned the BTLact to negative in about 50% of patients and significantly reduced the symptoms,especially in those patients with an alternated constipation/diarrhoea-variant IBS.CONCLUSION:SIBO should be always suspected in patients with IBS,and a differential diagnosis is done by means of a 'breath test'.Rifaximin may represent a valid approach to the treatment of SIBO.Sergio Peralta Claudia Cottone Tiziana Doveri Piero Luigi Almasio Antonio Craxi 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,21:19
14Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile ducts: A case report and literature review显示文摘Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct(IPNB) is a rare bile duct neoplasm mostly found in far eastern nations where hepatolithiasis and clonorchiasis infections are endemic. In western countries,it is very rare and the etiology is unknown. In this article,we report the first IPNB patient we encountered in our clinic and a literature review. The patient is a 38-yearold female with a history of choledocholithiasis who presented with obstructive jaundice. She was found to have a papillary mass at the junction of the right hepatic duct and common hepatic duct with six masses in the liver parenchyma. The immunophenotypic and histologic features of the tumor are consistent with IPNB,gastric subtype. The patient had a partial hepatectomy and has been receiving palliative chemotherapy. In a search of Pub Med database,we collected 354 IPNB patients reported in 22 articles. In these patients,52.8% were from Japan and 27.7% were from western countries including the United States(11.0%). The age of the patients ranged from 35 to 80 years old with an average of 64.6. Male/female ratio was 1.5. Macroscopically,57.5% of the tumors were in the left lobe and 29.5% were in the right lobe. The average size of the tumor were 4.2 cm at the time of diagnosis. Histologically,pancreato-biliary subtype accounted for 41.8%,intestinal 28.0%,gastric 13.5% and oncocytic 16%. An invasive component is most often present in the pancreato-biliary and gastric subtypes. Despite recent advanced technologies,diagnosis of IPNB is still challenging,especially in western countries due to its rarity. 15Probiotics to counteract biofilm-associated infections: promising and conflicting data显示文摘Altered bowel flora is currently thought to play a role in a variety of disease conditions, and the use of Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus spp. as probiotics has been demonstrated to be health-promoting, even if the success of their administration depends on the applied bacterial strain(s) and the targeted disease. In the last few decades, specific probiotics have been shown to be effective in the treatment or the prevention of acute viral gastroenteritis, pediatric post-antibiotic-associated diarrhea, some pediatric allergic disorders, necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants, inflammatory bowel diseases and postsurgical pouchitis. The potential application of probiotics is continuously widening, with new evidence accumulating to support their effect on the prevention and treatment of other disease conditions, including several oral diseases, such as dental caries, periodontal diseases and oral malodor, as well as genitourinary and wound infections. Considering the increasingly widespread ability of pathogens to generate persistent biofilm-related infections, an even more attractive proposal is to administer probiotics to prevent or counteract biofilm development.The response of biofilm-based oral, intestinal, vaginal and wound infections to probiotics treatment will be reviewed here in light of the most recent results obtained in this field.Claudia Vuotto Francesca Longo Gianfranco Donelli 2014International Journal of Oral Science2014,6,4:15
16S100B protein in tissue development,repair and regeneration显示文摘The Ca 2+-binding protein of the EF-hand type,S100B,exerts both intracellular and extracellular regulatory activities.As an intracellular regulator,S100B is involved in the regulation of energy metabolism,transcription,protein phosphorylation,cell proliferation,survival,differentiation and motility,and Ca 2+ homeostasis,by interacting with a wide array of proteins(i.e.,enzymes,enzyme substrates,cytoskeletal subunits,scaffold/adaptor proteins,transcription factors,ubiquitin E3 ligases,ion channels) in a restricted number of cell types.As an extracellular signal,S100B engages the pattern recognition receptor,receptor for advanced glycation end-products(RAGE),on immune cells as well as on neuronal,astrocytic and microglial cells,vascular smooth muscle cells,skeletal myoblasts and cardiomyocytes.However,RAGE may not be the sole receptor activated by S100B,the protein being able to enhance bFGF-FGFR1 signaling by interacting with FGFR1-bound bFGF in particular cell types.Moreover,extracellular effects of S100B vary depending on its local concentration.Increasing evidence suggests that at the concentration found in extracellular fluids in normal physiological conditions and locally upon acute tissue injury,which is up to a few nM levels,S100B exerts trophic effects in the central and peripheral nervous system and in skeletal muscle tissue thus participating in tissue homeostasis.The present commentary summarizes results implicating intracellular and extracellular S100B in tissue development,repair and regeneration.Guglielmo Sorci Francesca Riuzzi Cataldo Arcuri Claudia Tubaro Roberta Bianchi Ileana Giambanco Rosario Donato 2013World Journal of Biological Chemistry2013,4,1:14
17Toll-like receptor 4 and NOD2/CARD15 mutations in Hungarian patients with Crohn's disease: Phenotype-genotype correlations显示文摘AIM: To determine common NOD2/CARD15 mutations and TLR4 D299G polymorphism in Hungarian patients with CD.METHODS: A total of 527 unrelated patients with CD (male/female: 265/262, age: 37.1 (SD 7.6) years) and 200 healthy subjects were included. DNA was screened for possible NOD2/CARD15 mutations by denaturing highperformance liquid chromatography (confirmed by direct sequencing). TLR4 D299G was tested by PCR-RFLP.RESULTS: NOD2/CARD15 mutations were found in 185patients (35.1%) and in 33 controls (16.5%, P<0.0001).SNP8/R702W (10.8% vs 6%, P = 0.02), SNP13/3020insC (19.4% vs 5%, P<0.0001) and exon4 R703C (2.1% vs 0%, P = 0.02) mutations were more frequent in CD, while the frequency of SNP12/G908R was not increased. The frequency of TLR4 D299G was not different (CD: 9.9% vscontrols: 12.0%). Variant NOD2/CARD15 allele was associated with an increased risk for CD (ORhet = 1.71,95%CI = 1.12-2.6, P= 0.0001, ORtwo-riskalleles = 25.2,95%CI = 4.37- , P<0.0001), early disease onset (carrier:26.4 years vs non-carrier: 29.8 years, P = 0.0006), ileal disease (81.9% vs 69.5%, OR = 1.99, 95%CI = 1.29-3.08,P = 0.02, presence of NOD2/CARD15 and TLR4: 86.7% vs64.8%), stricturing behavior (OR = 1.69, 95%CI = 1.13-2.55,P = 0.026) and increased need for resection (OR=1.71,95%CI: 1.13-2.62, P= 0.01), but not with duration, extraintestinal manifestations, familial disease or smoking. TLR4exhibited a modifier effect: age of onset in wt/TLR4 D299G carriers: 27.4 years vs NOD2mut/TLR D299G: 23 years (P= 0.06), in NOD2mut/wt: 26.7 years.CONCLUSION: These results confirm that variant NOD2/CARD15 (R702W, R703C and 3020insC) alleles are associated with earlier disease onset, ileal disease,stricturing disease behavior in Hungarian CD patients. 18Clinical Research on Acupuncture-Concepts and Guidance on Efficacy and Effectiveness Research显示文摘Over the last few years a number of large acupuncture trials have been carried out in western countries.The following article draws on the experience from these recent large-scale trials on acupuncture to outline the way randomized trials could be used to answer questions on efficacy,effectiveness and efficiency.It will provide guidance,firstly on the underlying concepts of both efficacy and effectiveness and secondly on designing both types of trials.In addition,the controversy over specific and non-specific effects of acupuncture,emerging from the results of the above-mentioned trials,will be highlighted.Suggestions for future clinical research on acupuncture include:greater reflection on the complex approach of Chinese medicine, and transparent and detailed reporting according to CONSORT and STRICTA guidelines.The current data on acupuncture point-specific effects do indeed have relevance,however for valid decision-making on acupuncture,further clinical trials on effectiveness and cost-effectiveness are required to provide realistic benefit estimates for future health care.Claudia M Witt 2011Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine2011,17,2:13
19Feedstock choice,pyrolysis temperature and type influence biochar characteristics:a comprehensive meta-data analysis review显示文摘Various studies have established that feedstock choice,pyrolysis temperature,and pyrolysis type influence final biochar physicochemical characteristics.However,overarching analyses of pre-biochar creation choices and correlations to biochar characteristics are severely lacking.Thus,the objective of this work was to help researchers,biochar-stakeholders,and practitioners make more well-informed choices in terms of how these three major parameters influence the final biochar product.Utilizing approximately 5400 peer-reviewed journal articles and over 50,800 individual data points,herein we elucidate the selections that influence final biochar physical and chemical properties,total nutrient content,and perhaps more importantly tools one can use to predict biochar’s nutrient availability.Based on the large dataset collected,it appears that pyrolysis type(fast or slow)plays a minor role in biochar physico-(inorganic)chemical characteristics;few differences were evident between production styles.Pyrolysis temperature,however,affects biochar’s longevity,with pyrolysis temperatures>500℃ generally leading to longer-term(i.e.,>1000 years)half-lives.Greater pyrolysis temperatures also led to biochars containing greater overall C and specific surface area(SSA),which could promote soil physico-chemical improvements.However,based on the collected data,it appears that feedstock selection has the largest influence on biochar properties.Specific surface area is greatest in wood-based biochars,which in combination with pyrolysis temperature could likely promote greater changes in soil physical characteristics over other feedstock-based biochars.Crop-and other grass-based biochars appear to have cation exchange capacities greater than other biochars,which in combination with pyrolysis temperature could potentially lead to longer-term changes in soil nutrient retention.The collected data also suggest that one can reasonably predict the availability of various biochar nutrients(e.g.,N,P,K,Ca,Mg,Fe,and Cu)based on feedstock choice and total nutrient content.Results can be used to create designer biochars to help solve environmental issues and supply a variety of plant-available nutrients for crop growth.James A.Ippolito Liqiang Cui Claudia Kammann Nicole Wrage‑Mönnig Jose MEstavillo Teresa Fuertes‑Mendizabal Maria Luz Cayuela Gilbert Sigua Jeff Novak Kurt Spokas Nils Borchard 2020Biochar2020,2,4:13
20Probiotics as a complementary therapeutic approach in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is currently recognized as one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease. It involves a spectrum of conditionsthat include pure steatosis without inflammation, steatohepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis. The key factor in the pathophysiology of NAFLD is insulin resistance that determines lipid accumulation in the hepatocytes and, thus, oxidative stress, which is followed by inflammatory response. However, NAFLD pathogenesis is still largely unknown and has been extensively investigated. Although life style modification with the aim of losing weight has been advocated to treat this disorder, its effectiveness is limited; additionally, there is no specific pharmacologic treatment until nowadays. Recent evidence suggests that the gut microbiota may play a role in the development of insulin resistance, hepatic steatosis, necroinflammation and fibrosis. Differences in gut microbiota between NAFLD patients and lean individuals as well as presence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in NAFLD subjects have been demonstrated. Furthermore, some data indicate that the immunoregulatory effects of probiotics may be beneficial in NAFLD treatment as they modulate the intestinal microbiota; improve epithelial barrier function and strengthen the intestinal wall decreasing its permeability; reduce bacterial translocation and endotoxemia; improve intestinal inflammation; and reduce oxidative and inflammatory liver damage.
