| 1 | Variable retention in Tasmania, Australia: trends over 16 years of monitoring and adaptive management显示文摘Background:Variable retention harvesting using aggregated retention(ARN)has been applied in some Tasmanian wet eucalypt forests for>15 years.Implementation of ARN in Tasmania differs from most other regions,as forest influence(or the proximity of harvested areas to long-term retention)is primarily used to distinguish ARN from clearfelling rather than retention level,and broadcast burning is used as a regeneration treatment,resulting in a preference for edge aggregates instead of isolated retained islands.Clear emphasis on site-level retention of biological legacies and forest influence to facilitate re-establishment of mature forest species ensures that ARN coupes achieve the ecological objectives associated with retention forestry.Results:Spatial and survey data collected from operational ARN coupes illustrates the development of this silvicultural practice over time and allows comparisons with conventional clearfelling.Over 90%of ARN coupes have met the forest influence target of>50%.The number of ARN coupes harvested per year has varied,but mean retention levels(29%)and the mean area harvested per coupe(24 ha)have remained the same.Forest influence in ARN coupes has decreased over time,as have perimeter-to-area ratios,largely due to a decrease in the number of island aggregates.Although these measures of complexity have decreased,ARN coupes still have much greater forest influence,retention,and perimeter-to-area ratios when compared to conventional clearfell,burn and sow(CBS)coupes.The observed decrease in boundary complexity should facilitate regeneration burning in ARN coupes,although no increase in the proportion of burnt seedbed was observed.The proportion of burnt seedbed is strongly correlated with eucalypt seedling stocking and density in ARN coupes,and these attributes were all significantly lower in recent ARN coupes compared to clearfells.These differences appear to be due to achieving better burns in recent CBS coupes,rather than poorer ones in ARN coupes.Conclusions:Although the area that can feasibly be harvested by ARN is limited by the requirement for regeneration burning,ARN provides clear biodiversity benefits and satisfactory silvicultural outcomes and is now firmly embedded as a viable alternative to clearfelling in Tasmanian wet eucalypt forests. | Robyn E.Scott Mark G.Neyland Susan C.Baker | 2019 | Ecological Processes2019,8,1: | 5 |
| 2 | Chopper-modulated gas chromatography electroantennography enabled using high-temperature MEMS flow control device显示文摘We report the design,fabrication and characterization of a microelectromechanical systems(MEMS)flow control device for gas chromatography(GC)with the capability of sustaining high-temperature environments.We further demonstrate the use of this new device in a novel MEMS chopper-modulated gas chromatography-electroantennography(MEMS-GC-EAG)system to identify specific volatile organic compounds(VOCs)at extremely low concentrations.The device integrates four pneumatically actuated microvalves constructed via thermocompression bonding of the polyimide membrane between two glass substrates with microstructures.The overall size of the device is 32 mm×32 mm,and it is packaged in a 50 mm×50 mm aluminum housing that provides access to the fluidic connections and allows thermal control.The characterization reveals that each microvalve in the flow control chip provides an ON to OFF ratio as high as 1000:1.The device can operate reliably for more than 1 million switching cycles at a working temperature of 300℃.Using the MEMS-GC-EAG system,we demonstrate the successful detection of cis-11-hexadecenal with a concentration as low as 1 pg at a demodulation frequency of 2 Hz by using an antenna harvested from the male Helicoverpa Virescens moth.In addition,1μg of a green leafy volatile(GLV)is barely detected using the conventional GC-EAG,while MEMS-GC-EAG can readily detect the same amount of GLV,with an improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of~22 times.We expect that the flow control device presented in this report will allow researchers to explore new applications and make new discoveries in entomology and other fields that require high-temperature flow control at the microscale. | Ming-Da Zhou Muhammad Akbar Andrew J.Myrick Yiqiu Xia Waleed J.Khan Xiang Gao Thomas C.Baker Si-Yang Zheng | 2017 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2017,3,1: | 2 |

| 15 | Impact of surgical volume and resident involvement on patency rates after vasectomy reversaldA 14-year experience in an open access system显示文摘Objective:Evaluate the influence of fellowship training,resident participation,reconstruction type,and patient factors on outcomes after vasectomy reversals in a high volume,open access system.Methods:Retrospective review of all vasectomy reversals performed at a single institution from January 1,2002 to December 31,2016 was conducted.Patient and spouse demographics,patient tobacco use and comorbidities,surgeon training and case volume,resident participation,reconstruction type,and postoperative patency were collected and analyzed.Results:Five hundred and twenty-six vasectomy reversals were performed during the study period.Follow-up was available in 80.6%of the cohort and overall patency,regardless of reconstruction type was 88.7%.The mean time to reversal was 7.87 years(range of 0-34 years).The majority of cases included resident participation.Case volume was high with faculty and residents logging a mean of 37.0 and 38.7(median 18 and 37)cases respectively.Bilateral vasovasostomy was the most common reconstruction type(83%)and demonstrated a significantly better patency rate(89%)than all other reconstructions(p=0.0008).Overall patency and patency by reconstruction type were not statistically different among faculty surgeons and were not impacted by fertility fellowship training,resident participation or postgraduate year.Multivariate analysis demonstrated that increased time to reversal and repeat reconstructions had a negative impact on patency(p=0.0023 and p=0.043,respectively).Conclusions:Surgeons with a high volume of vasectomy reversals have outcomes consistent with contemporary series regardless of fellowship training in fertility.Patency was better for bilateral vasovasostomies.Patency was not negatively impacted by tobacco use,comorbidities,resident participation,or post-graduate year. | Alexandria M.Hertz Andrew W.Stamm Mark I.Anderson Karen C.Baker | 2021 | Asian Journal of Urology2021,8,2: | 0 |
