| 1 | Nutrient changes in potting mix and Eucalyptus nitens leaf tissue under macadamia biochar amendments显示文摘The effect of macadamia nut shell biochar on nitrogen,potassium,phosphorus,magnesium,calcium and sodium concentrations in potting mix used to grow Eucalyptus nitens seedlings was investigated in a glasshouse experiment.The treatments combined two fertiliser rates(50 and 100% rate of the commercial mix commonly used in forestry nurseries) with eight biochar rates(0,2,5,10,20,50,80 and 100 t ha^(-1)) arranged in a randomised complete block with three replicates of four sample plants.Nutrients were quantified in the potting mix and seedling leaves at four destructive harvests 135,177,219 and269 days after planting.Biochar significantly increased nitrate-N,Colwell P,Colwell K and exchangeable Na andreduced ammonium-N,Mg and Ca concentrations in the potting mix.Seedling leaf concentrations of P,K and Na were increased by biochar application,while N remained dependent on fertiliser rate only.Mg and Ca leaf concentrations decreased in response to increasing biochar rates.Elevated nitrate-N and decreased ammonium-N concentrations suggest that biochar might have increased nitrification in the potting mix.We presumed that biochar mediated processes that reduced uptake of P and K when high doses of biochar were combined with full fertilisation.Changes in potting mix K,Na,Mg and Ca were consistent with selective adsorption of ions to biochar surfaces. | A.Wrobel-Tobiszewska M.Boersma J.Sargison P.Adams B.Singh S.Franks C.J.Birch D.C.Close | 2018 | Journal of Forestry Research2018,29,2: | 12 |
| 2 | Lead Induced Oxidative Stress: Beneficial Effects of Kombucha Tea显示文摘To evaluate the effect of oral administration of Kombucha tea (K-tea) on lead induced oxidative stress. Methods Sprague Dawley rats were administered 1 mL of 3.8% lead acetate solution daily alone or in combination with K-tea orally for 45 d, and the antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation were evaluated. Results Oral administration of lead acetate to rats enhanced lipid peroxidation and release of creatine phosphokinase and decreased levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD and glutathione peroxidase, GPx). Lead treatment did not alter humoral immunity, but inhibited DTH response when compared to the control.Lead administration also increased DNA fragmentation in liver. Oral administration of Kombucha tea to rats exposed to lead decreased lipid peroxidation and DNA damage with a concomitant increase in the reduced glutathione level and GPx activity. Kombucha tea supplementation relieved the lead induced immunosuppression to appreciable levels. | 8 | Leelamine suppresses cMyc expression in prostate cancer cells in vitro and inhibits prostate carcinogenesis in vivo显示文摘Aim:Leelamine(LLM)inhibits the growth of human prostate cancer cells but the underlying mechanism is not fully understood.The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of LLM on cMyc,which is overexpressed in a subset of human prostate cancers.Methods:The effect of LLM on cMyc expression and activity was determined by western blotting/confocal microscopy and luciferase reporter assay,respectively.A transgenic mouse model of prostate cancer(Hi-Myc)was used to determine the chemopreventive efficacy of LLM.Results:Exposure of androgen-sensitive(LNCaP)and castration-resistant(22Rv1)human prostate cancer cells to LLM resulted in downregulation of protein and mRNA levels of cMyc.Overexpression of cMyc partially attenuated LLM-mediated inhibition of colony formation,cell viability,and cell migration in 22Rv1 and/or PC-3 cells.LLM treatment decreased protein levels of cMyc targets(e.g.,lactate dehydrogenase),however,overexpression of cMyc did not attenuate these effects.A trend for a decrease in the expression level of cMyc protein was discernible in 22Rv1 xenografts from LLM-treated mice compared with control mice.LLM treatment(10 mg/kg body weight,5 times/week)was well-tolerated by Hi-Myc transgenic mice.The incidence of high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia,adenocarcinoma in situ,and microinvasion were lower in LLM-treated Hi-Myc mice but the difference was not statistically significant.Conclusion:The present study reveals that LLM inhibits cMyc expression in human prostate cancer cells in vitro but concentrations higher than 10 mg/kg may be required to achieve chemoprevention of prostate cancer. | Krishna B.Singh Eun-Ryeong Hahm Shivendra V.Singh | 2021 | Journal of Cancer Metastasis and Treatment2021,7,1: | 1 |

| 10 | Biological Parts for Engineering Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Plants显示文摘It is vital to ramp up crop production dramatically by 2050 due to the increasing global population and demand for food.However, with the climate change projections showing that droughts and heatwaves becoming common in much of the globe,there is a severe threat of a sharp decline in crop yields. Thus, developing crop varieties with inbuilt genetic tolerance toenvironmental stresses is urgently needed. Selective breeding based on genetic diversity is not keeping up with the growingdemand for food and feed. However, the emergence of contemporary plant genetic engineering, genome-editing, and syntheticbiology offer precise tools for developing crops that can sustain productivity under stress conditions. Here, we summarize thesystems biology-level understanding of regulatory pathways involved in perception, signalling, and protective processesactivated in response to unfavourable environmental conditions. The potential role of noncoding RNAs in the regulation ofabiotic stress responses has also been highlighted. Further, examples of imparting abiotic stress tolerance by geneticengineering are discussed. | 14 | Effects of resistivity on standing shocks in low angular momentum flows around black holes显示文摘We study two-dimensional low angular momentum flow around a black hole using the resistive magnetohydrodynamic module of PLUTO code.Simulations have been performed for the flows with parameters of specific angular momentum,specific energy and magnetic field which may be expected for the flow around Sgr A*.For flows with lower resistivityη=10^(-6)and 0.01,the luminosity and shock location on the equator vary quasi-periodically.The power density spectra of luminosity variation show peak frequencies which correspond to the periods of 5×10^(5),1.4×10^(5)and 5×10^(4)s.These quasi-periodic oscillations(QPOs)occur due to interaction between the outer oscillating standing shock and the inner weak shocks occurring at the innermost hot blob.While for cases with higher resistivityη=0.1 and 1.0,the high resistivity considerably suppresses the magnetic activity such as MHD turbulence and the flows tend to be steady and symmetric with respect to the equator.The steady standing shock is formed more outward compared with the hydrodynamical flow.The low angular momentum flow model with the above flow parameters and with low resistivity has a possibility to explain long-term flares of Sgr A*with frequencies~one per day and~5-10 days in the latest observations by Chandra,Swift and XMM-Newton monitoring of Sgr A*. | Chandra B.Singh Toru Okuda Ramiz Aktar | 2021 | Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics2021,21,6: | 0 |
| 15 | The redshift distribution of BL Lacs and FSRQs显示文摘Flat spectrum radio quasars(FSRQs) and BL Lacertae objects(BL Lacs) are powerful jet producing active galactic nuclei associated with supermassive black holes accreting at high and low Eddington rates, respectively. Based on the Millennium Simulation, Gardner & Done have predicted their redshift distribution by appealing to ideas from the spin paradigm in a way that exposes a need for a deeper discussion on three interrelated issues:(1) an overprediction of BL Lacs compared to FSRQs;(2) a difference in FSRQ and BL Lac distributions;(3) a need for powerful but different jets at separated cosmic times. Beginning with Gardner & Done's determination of Fermi observable FSRQs based on the distribution of thermal accretion across cosmic time from the Millennium Simulation, we connect FSRQs to BL Lacs by way of the gap paradigm for black hole accretion and jet formation to address the above issues in a unified way. We identify a physical constraint in the paradigm for the numbers of BL Lacs that naturally leads to separate peaks in time for different albeit powerful jets.
