| 3 | Comparative Assessment of Heavy Metals Pollution in Surface Water in Ikoli River and Epie Creek in Yenagoa Metropolis Using Geographical Information System显示文摘The article is the investigation of heavy metals pollution on surface water in Ikoli River and Epie creek in Yenagoa, metropolis,Bayelsa State.Pb,Cd,Ni,Cr,Fe,Zn was determined and evaluated using Geographical Information System.Zinc concentration was below the permissible limit of 3 mg/L in all the locations sampled.Iron is 77.78%below the limit of WHO 2011 of 0.3 mg/L while other heavy metals examined in Ikoli River and Epie creek are highly polluted. The pollution index for contamination index shows 11.11%sample are high and 88.89%are low while the evaluation of heavy metal index and the pollution index load of the heavy metals contain 22.11%of the sample are low and 77.78%are high which imply the Ikoli River and Epie creek is polluted.Multivariate treatment of the result revealed a good correlation between the PCA and HCA,which showed activities of natural processes and man influenced environmental sources of the heavy metals which were mainly products of automobiles exhaust, water tank leakages as well as dumping of radioactive wastes and burning. The study investigated successfully the potential use of GIS with the help of multiple criteria decision analysis to predict and characterize areas of high pollution, medium, and low pollution in the study area. | Egai Ayibawari O. | 4 | GIS&Remote Sensing Based Morphometric Parameters and Topographic Changes of the Lower Orashi River in Niger Delta Desmond显示文摘In watershed hydrology, the morphometric features of a river basin are vital to examine the lower Orashi River basin morphological and hydrological aspects,as well as its flood potential, based on their morphometric characteristics using remotely sensed SRTM data that was analyzed with ArcGIS software. The areal, linear, and relief aspects of the Orashi River basin were examined as morphometric parameters. The lower Orashi river basin, according to the findings, has a total size of 625.61 km2 and a perimeter of 307.98 km,with a 5th order river network based on Strahler categorization and a dendritic drainage pattern.Because of low drainage density, the drainage texture is very fine, the relief is low,and the slope is very low.Bifurcation ratio, circularity ratio, drainage density aspect ratio, form factor, and stream frequency values indicate that the basin is less elongated and would produce surface runoff for a longer period, while topographic changes show that the river is decreasing with depth in the land area at about the same elevation as a result of sand deposited due to lack of maintenance by dredging, which implies that the basin is morphometrically elevated and sensitive to erosion and flooding. To understand geo-hydrological features and to plan and manage watersheds, morphometric analysis based on geographic information systems and remote sensing techniques is beneficial. | Desmond Eteh Edirin Akpofure Solomon Otobo | 2022 | Journal of Atmospheric Science Research2022,5,1: | 0 |
| 5 | Zingiber officinale(Ginger)Methanol Extract Abates Kidney Dysfunction in Mice Co-exposed to Sub-chronic Alcohol Intoxication and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder显示文摘Background:Increasing number of people globally gives in to indiscriminate consumption of excess alcohol as a coping mechanism to relieve any form of physical or psychological stress.Previously, ethnomedicinal use of Zingiber officinale Roscoe(Ginger)have been shown to exhibit broad range of pharmacological benefits but no data has reported the phytotherapeutic treatment of Zingiber officinale methanol extract(MEZO)on alcohol-use disorder(AUD)and post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD)-induced oxidative and inflammatory stress relevant to disruption of kidney functions in animal model. Objective:To investigate the protective effect of MEZO on kidney-oxidative and inflammatory biomarkers in sub-chronic alcohol exacerbation of PTSD symptoms in mice. Methods:Male Swiss mice were administered 30%ethanol for two weeks and thereafter introduced to single pro-longed stress to induce AUD and PTSD respectively prior to post-treatment with MEZO and vitamin C.Markers of oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, kidney functions,HPA-axis signaling molecules, vasodilator substance, and histopathology of the kidney were evaluated.Results:Sub-chronic alcohol intoxication heightened PTSD-induced oxido-inflammatory stress, altered the kidney function indices and HPA-axis,and reduced nitric oxide production, which were ameliorated by the phytother-apeutic treatment with MEZO.Furthermore, severe degeneration and atrophy of renal tubules were observed.Meanwhile,MEZO interventions strongly abated all these effects. Conclusions:Herein, the study shows that phytotherapeutic treatment with MEZO prevents the damaging effects of co-exposure to sub-chronic alcohol intoxication and PTSD. | Olusegun G.Adebayo Benneth Ben-Azu Egwonor Akpofure Modo U.Emmanuel Iheanyichukwu Wopara Wadioni Aduema Lawrence Dayo Adedayo Jude Ijuo Abeje | 2023 | Clinical Complementary Medicine and Pharmacology2023,3,4: | 0 |
