| 2 | Prediction of air flow, methane, and coal dust dispersion in a room and pillar mining face显示文摘In underground coal mines, uncontrolled accumulation of methane and fine coal dust often leads to serious incidents such as explosion. Therefore, methane and dust dispersion in underground mines is closely monitored and strictly regulated. Accordingly, significant efforts have been devoted to study methane and dust dispersion in underground mines. In this study, methane emission and dust concentration are numerically investigated using a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) approach. Various possible scenarios of underground mine configurations are evaluated. The results indicate that the presence of continuous miner adversely affects the air flow and leads to increased methane and dust concentrations.Nevertheless, it is found that such negative effect can be minimized or even neutralized by operating the scrubber fan in suction mode. | 5 | Differential regulation of protein synthesis in skeletal muscle and liver of neonatal pigs by leucine through an mTORC1-dependent pathway显示文摘Neonatal growth is characterized by a high protein synthesis rate that is largely due to an enhanced sensitivity to the postprandial rise in insulin and amino acids, especially leucine. The mechanism of leucine's action in vivo is not well understood. In this study, we investigated the effect of leucine infusion on protein synthesis in skeletal muscle and liver of neonatal pigs. To evaluate the mode of action of leucine, we used rapamycin, an inhibitor of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) complex-1 (mTORC1). Overnight-fasted 7-day-old piglets were treated with rapamycin for 1 hour and then infused with leucine (400 μmol·kg -1 ·h -1 ) for 1 hour. Leucine infusion increased the rate of protein synthesis, and ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (S6K1) and eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF) 4E-binding protein-1 (4E-BP1) phosphorylation in gastrocnemius and masseter muscles (P < 0.05), but not in the liver. The leucine-induced stimulation of protein synthesis and S6K1 and 4E-BP1 phosphorylation were completely blocked by rapamycin, suggesting that leucine action is by an mTORC1-dependent mechanism. Neither leucine nor rapamycin had any effect on the activation of the upstream mTORC1 regulators, AMP-activated protein kinase and protein kinase B, in skeletal muscle or liver. The activation of eIF2a and elongation factor 2 was not affected by leucine or rapamycin, indicating that these two pathways are not limiting steps of leucine-induced protein synthesis. | 6 | An overview of 10-year observation of the South China Sea branch of the Pacific to Indian Ocean throughflow at the Karimata Strait显示文摘Besides the Indonesian throughflow(ITF), the South China Sea throughflow(SCSTF) also contributes to the water transport from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. However, this South China Sea(SCS) branch at the Karimata Strait is poorly observed until 2007, even though its importance has been suggested by numerical studies for decades. In this paper, we review the nearly 10-year field measurement in the Karimata Strait by the execution of the projects of 'SCS-Indonesian Seas Transport/Exchange(SITE) and Impacts on Seasonal Fish Migration' and 'The Transport, Internal Waves and Mixing in the Indonesian Throughflow regions(TIMIT) and Impacts on Marine Ecosystem', which extend the observations from the western Indonesian seas to the east to include the main channels of the ITF, is introduced. This is due to its greater sensitivity to control inputs and disturbances as well as higher bandwidth of dynamics. This work is focused on designing practical tracking controller for a small scale helicopter following predefined trajectories. A tracking controller based on optimal control theory is synthe- sized as a part of the development of an autonomous helicopter. Some issues with regards to control constraints are addressed. The weighting between state tracking performance and control power expenditure is analyzed. | 9 | Introduction and evaluation of a novel hybrid brattice for improved dust control in underground mining faces: A computational study显示文摘A proper control and management of dust dispersion is essential to ensure safe and productive underground working environment. Brattice installation to direct the flow from main shaft to the mining face was found to be the most effective method to disperse dust particle away from the mining face. However,it limits the movement and disturbs the flexibility of the mining fleets and operators at the tunnel. This study proposes a hybrid brattice system- a combination of a physical brattice together with suitable and flexible directed and located air curtains- to mitigate dust dispersion from the mining face and reduce dust concentration to a safe level for the working operators. A validated three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic model utilizing Eulerian–Lagrangian approach is employed to track the dispersion of dust particle. Several possible hybrid brattice scenarios are evaluated with the objective to improve dust management in underground mine. The results suggest that implementation of hybrid brattice is beneficial for the mining operation: up to three times lower dust concentration is achieved as compared to that of the physical brattice without air curtain. | Kurnia Jundika C. | 11 | Regulation of protein degradation pathways by amino acids and insulin in skeletal muscle of neonatal pigs显示文摘Background:The rapid gain in lean mass in neonates requires greater rates of protein synthesis than degradation.We previously delineated the molecular mechanisms by which insulin and amino acids,especially leucine,modulate skeletal muscle protein synthesis and how this changes with development.In the current study,we identified mechanisms involved in protein degradation regulation.In experiment 1,6- and 26-d-old pigs were studied during 1) euinsulinemic-euglycemic-euaminoacidemic,2) euinsulinemic-euglycemic-hyperaminoacidemic,and 3)hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic-euaminoacidemic clamps for 2 h.In experiment 2,5-d-old pigs were studied during1) euinsulinemic-euglycemic-euaminoacidemic-euleucinemic,2) euinsulinemic-euglycemic-hypoaminoacidemichyperleucinemic,and 3) euinsulinemic-euglycemic-euaminoacidemic-hyperleucinemic clamps for 24 h.We determined in muscle indices of ubiquitin-proteasome,i.e.,atrogin-1(MAFbx) and muscle RING-finger protein-1(MuRFI) and autophagy-lysosome systems,i.e.,unc51-like kinase 1(UKL1),microtubule-associated protein light chain 3(LC3),and lysosomal-associated membrane protein 2(Lamp-2).For comparison,we measured ribosomal protein S6(rpS6) and eukaryotic initiation factor 4E(elF4E) activation,components of translation initiation.Results:Abundance of atrogin-1,but not MuRFI,was greater in 26- than 6-d-old pigs and was not affected by insulin,amino acids,or leucine.Abundance of ULK1 and LC3 was higher in younger pigs and not affected by treatment.The LC3-II/LC3-I ratio was reduced and ULK1 phosphorylation increased by insulin,amino acids,and leucine.These responses were more profound in younger pigs.Abundance of Lamp-2 was not affected by treatment or development.Abundance of elF4 E,but not rpS6,was higher in 6- than 26-d-old-pigs but unaffected by treatment.Phosphorylation of elF4 E was not affected by treatment,however,insulin,amino acids,and leucine stimulated rpS6 phosphorylation,and the responses decreased with development.Conclusions:The rapid growth of neonatal muscle is in part due to the positive balance between the activation of protein synthesis and degradation signaling.Insulin,amino acids,and,particularly,leucine,act as signals to modulate muscle protein synthesis and degradation in neonates. | Agus Suryawan Teresa A Davis | 2014 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2014,5,3: | 4 |
| 12 | Modeling and optimization of Terminalia catappa L.kernel oil extraction using response surface methodology and artificial neural network显示文摘In this study,response surface methodology(RSM)and artificial neural network(ANN)were used to optimize Terminalia catappa L.kernel oil(TCKO)yield.Solvent extraction method was used for the oil extraction,with n-hexane as the extracting solvent.The highest oil yield was obtained at 55℃,150 min,and 0.5 mm.The physicochemical properties of the TCKO were determined using standard methods.Gas chromatographic(GC)analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR)were respectively,used to determine the fatty acid composition and prevalent functional groups in TCKO.At optimum conditions of temperature,particle size and extraction time,the RSM predicted oil yield was 62.92%,which was validated as 60.34%,whereas ANN predicted yield was 60.39%,which was validated as 60.40%.The results of the physicochemical characterization of TCKO showed that the dielectric strength(DS),viscosity,flash and pour points values were 30.61 KV,20.29 mm^2 s^−1,260°C,and 3℃,respectively.Physicochemical characterization and FTIR results of TCKOindicated its potential industrial application,especially as transformer fluid.Fatty acids compositions result indicated that the oil was highly unsaturated;while XRD results of Terminalia catappa L.kernel(TCK)samples obtained,both before and after extraction,showed difference in their peaks and corresponding intensities,due to the damage effect of solvent.Finally,the obtained optimization results indicated that ANN was a better and more effective tool than RSM,due to its higher R^2 and lower RMS values. | Chinedu Matthew Agu Matthew Chukwudi Menkiti Ekwe Bassey Ekwe Albert Chibuzor Agulanna | 2020 | Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture2020,,1: | 3 |

| 14 | Evaluation of the heat transfer performance of helical coils of non-circular tubes显示文摘This study addresses heat transfer performance of various configurations of coiled non-circular tubes, e.g., in-plane spiral ducts, helical spiral ducts, and conical spiral ducts. The laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid in helical coils made of square cross section tubes is simulated using the computational fluid dynamic approach. The effects of tube Reynolds number, fluid Prandtl number, coil diameter, etc., are quantified and discussed. Both constant wall temperature and constant heat flux conditions are simulated. The effect of in-plane coil versus a cylindrical design of constant coil, as well as a conical coil design is discussed. Results are compared with those for a straight square tube of the same length as that used to form the coils.
