| 8 | Temporal and spatial differentiation in microhabitat use: Implications for reproductive isolation and ecological niche specification显示文摘Niche differentiation enables ecologically similar species to coexist by lessening competition over food and/or shelters and may be critical for reproductive isolation between closely related species in close proximity.Because no extra traits need to evolve,spatial and temporal differentiation may readily take place to complement other isolating mechanisms.Two closely related treefrog species occur together in Korea:the endangered Hyla suweonensis and the widespread Hyla japonica.Advertisement calls are differentiated,but it is unclear whether call difference is sufficient for reproductive isolation.We tracked individuals of both species to study fine-scale differentiation in microhabitat use in the diel cycle of the breeding season using a harmonic direction finder.tracking male movement patterns of both species revealed spatial and temporal differentiation in microhabitat use for calling and resting during the breeding season.Males of both H.suweonensis and H.japonica occurred in all 5 microhabitats identified in this study:rice paddy,ground,buried,grass and bush.Both treefrog species showed general similarities in calling from rice paddies and resting in grass and bush.However,H.suweonensis moved into rice paddies and produced advertisement calls 3 h earlier than H.japonica.These differences likely minimize contact between the species and provide an additional isolating mechanism.In addition,the activity of H.suweonensis may be contributing to the decline of this species,as resting in grass would increase dangers from predatory birds and habitat disturbance. | Amaël BORZÉE Jun Young KIM Marina Andrade Martins DA CUNHA Donggeun Lee Eunchong SIN Sunmin OH Yoonjung YI Yikweon JANG | 2016 | Integrative Zoology2016,11,5: | 1 |
| 9 | When Fleeing Matters:Differences in Escape Behaviours of Three Northeast Asian Anurans显示文摘Prey species may have their own optimal escape strategy to balance predation risks and the energetic cost of fleeing.Some species have an advantage when maintaining a short fleeing distance,while others may favour an earlier escape based on microhabitat,size,or body condition.Here,we examined the escape behaviour of the three syntopic Northeast Asian anuran species:Mongolian toads(Strauchbufo raddei),Amur brown frogs(Rana amurensis),and Japanese treefrogs(Dryophytes japonicus)in Mongolia,Russia,China and DPR Korea.We examined flight initiation distance(FID;the distance from a potential predator to the point when the individual starts to flee)and distance fled(DF;distance between flight initiation and flight termination points)of each species and the effects of microhabitat,sex,and body size.Strauchbufo raddei and R.amurensis had a longer FID than D.japonicus,and S.raddei also had a longer DF than D.japonicus.These trends remained similar when dividing FID and DF by a size proxy(snout-vent length)for all individuals.This suggests that the treefrog D.japonicus used a strategy to stay immobile even when they were detected,and the toad S.raddei reacted quicker and more sensitively to predators despite the presence of toxin.Female S.raddei had a significantly longer FID than males suggesting that females are more sensitive to predation risk in this species,but body size was not significant for any of the three species.Our results indicate that the three sympatric species have different escaping strategies,likely related to differences in physiology and crypticity. | Yoonjung YI Zoljargal PUREVDORJ Irina MASLOVA Yikweon JANG Amaël BORZÉE | 2024 | Asian Herpetological Research2024,15,1: | 0 |
| 10 | Impact of the Miocene orogenesis on Kaloula spp.radiation and implication of local refugia on genetic diversification显示文摘The phylogeography of the Kaloula genus in East Asia is still poorly understood.One of the difficulties is the absence of fossils to corroborate molecular dating estimates.Here,we examined the mitochondrial structure of Kaloula spp.in East Asia and focused on the impact of glaciations on the northernmost species:Kaloula borealis.We determined the phylogenetic relationships,molecular dating,and genetic connectivity assessments within the genus from 1211 bp of concatenated mitochondrial 12S and 16S.The relaxed clock analyses reveal the emergence of Kaloula spp.common ancestor in East and Southeast Asia between the Eocene and Oligocene,c.38.47 Ma(24.69–53.65).The genetic diversification of lineages then increased on the East Asian Mainland during the Lower Miocene,c.20.10(8.73–30.65),most likely originating from the vicariance and radiation triggered by the orogeny of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau.Later,the dispersal towards the North East Asian Mainland during the Upper Miocene drove the population diversification of K.borealis c.9.01 Ma(3.66–15.29).Finally,the central mainland population became isolated following orogenesis events and diverged into K.rugifera during the Pliocene,c.3.06 Ma(0.02–10.90).The combination of population genetic and barrier analyses revealed a significant genetic isolation between populations of Kaloula spp.matching with the massive Qinling–Daba Mountain chain located in south-central China.Finally,we highlight a young divergence within the Eastern Mainland population of K.borealis,possibly attributed to refugia in south eastern China from which populations later expanded. | Siti N.OTHMAN Eggy Triana PUTRI Kevin R.MESSENGER Yoonhyuk BAE Yi YANG Timothy BOVA Thomas REED Hina AMIN Ming-Feng CHUANG Yikweon JANG Amaël BORZÉE | 2022 | Integrative Zoology2022,17,2: | 0 |
