| 1 | Fabrication and characterization of affordable hydrophobic ceramic hollow fibre membrane for contacting processes显示文摘Affordable hydrophobic hollow fibre membranes were prepared using kaolin and alumina based ceramic powders via a combined phase inversion and sintering technique,followed by a grafting with fluoroalkylsilane(FAS).The crux of the matter in this paper is to study the changes in the properties of the hollow fibre membranes(gas permeation,mechanical strength,pore size,porosity,tortuosity,morphology,and contact angle)by the addition of alumina(Al2O3)to the pure kaolin with mono or multiparticle sizes.By varying the overall loading and particle size of alumina addition,different morphologies of the membranes were obtained due to the differences in the path lengths during phase inversion process for each solvent and nonsolvent exchange.The successful grafting with FAS was evidenced by the increase in contact angle from nearly equal to zero degree before grafting to 140°after grafting.Kaolin-alumina-4,one of the hollow fibres fabricated in this work,achieved a mean pore size of 0.25μm with the bending strength of 96.4 MPa and high nitrogen permeance of 2.3×10^(-5) mol·m^(-2)·Pa^(-1)·s^(-1),which makes the hollow fibre most suitable for the membrane contactor application. | Mohammed Abdulmunem ABDULHAMEED Mohd Hafiz Dzarfan OTHMAN Haider Nadhom Azziz Al JODA Ahmad Fauzi ISMAIL Takeshi MATSUURA Zawati HARUN Mukhlis A.RAHMAN Mohd Hafiz PUTEH Juhana JAAFAR | 2017 | Journal of Advanced Ceramics2017,6,4: | 3 |
| 2 | High resolution facies architecture and digital outcrop modeling of the Sandakan formation sandstone reservoir, Borneo:Implications for reservoir characterization and flow simulation显示文摘Advances in photogrammetry have eased the acquisition of high-resolution digital information from outcrops, enabling faster, non-destructive data capturing and improved reservoir modeling. Geocellular models for flow dynamics with in the virtual outcrop in siliciclastic deposits at different sets of sandstone facies architecture remain, however, a challenge. Digital maps of bedding, lithological contrast, spatial-temporal variations of bedding and permeability characteristics make it more easy to understand flow tortuosity in a particular architecture. An ability to precisely model these properties can improve reservoir characterization and flow modeling at different scales. Here we demonstrate the construction of realistic 2 D sandstone facies based models for a pragmatic simulation of flow dynamics using a combination of digital point clouds dataset acquired from LiDAR and field investigation of the Sandakan Formation, Sabah, Borneo.Additionally, we present methods for enhancing the accuracy of outcrop digital datasets for producing high resolution flow simulation. A well-exposed outcrop from the Sandakan Formation, Sabah, northwest Borneo having a lateral extent of 750 m was chosen in order to implement our research approach. Sandstone facies and its connectivity are well constrained by outcrop observations, data from air-permeability measurements, bilinear interpolation of permeability, grid construction and water vector analysis for flow dynamics.These proportions were then enumerated in terms of static digital outcrop model(DOM) and facies model based on sandstone facies bedding characteristics. Flow simulation of water vector analysis through each of the four sandstone facies types show persistent spatial correlation of permeability that align with either cross-bedded orientation or straight with more dispersion high quality sandstone(porosity 21.25%-41.2%and permeability 1265.20-5986.25 mD) and moderate quality sandstone(porosity 10.44%-28.75% and permeability 21.44-1023.33 mD). Whereas, in more heterolithic sandstone(wavy-to flaser-bedded and bioturbated sandstone), lateral variations in permeability show spatially non-correlated patterns over centimeters to tens of meters with mostly of low quality sandstone(porosity 3.4%-12.31% and permeability < 1 mD to 3.21 mD). These variations reflect the lateral juxtaposition in flow dynamics. | 5 | Nigral dopaminergic neuron replenishment in adult mice through VE-cadherin-expressing neural progenitor cells显示文摘The function of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra is of central importance to the coordination of movement by the brain’s basal ganglia circuitry.This is evidenced by the loss of these neurons,resulting in the cardinal motor deficits associated with Parkinson’s disease.In order to fully understand the physiology of these key neurons and develop potential therapies for their loss,it is essential to determine if and how dopaminergic neurons are replenished in the adult brain.Recent work has presented evidence for adult neurogenesis of these neurons by Nestin^+/Sox2~–neural progenitor cells.We sought to further validate this finding and explore a potential atypical origin for these progenitor cells.Since neural progenitor cells have a proximal association with the vasculature of the brain and subsets of endothelial cells are Nestin^+,we hypothesized that dopaminergic neural progenitors might share a common cell lineage.Therefore,we employed a VE-cadherin promoter-driven CRE^(ERT2):TH^(lox)/TH^(lox) transgenic mouse line to ablate the tyrosine hydroxylase gene from endothelial cells in adult animals.After 26 weeks,but not 13 weeks,following the genetic blockade of tyrosine hydroxylase expression in VE-cadherin^+cells,we observed a significant reduction in tyrosine hydroxylase^+neurons in the substantia nigra.The results from this genetic lineage tracing study suggest that dopaminergic neurons are replenished in adult mice by a VE-cadherin^+progenitor cell population potentially arising from an endothelial lineage. | Abir A.Rahman Nathan K.Lai Joshua E.Albright Paige E.Urquhart Abby R.Webb Brad E.Morrison | 2017 | Neural Regeneration Research2017,12,11: | 1 |

| 10 | Growth performance and hematology of Djallonké rams fed haulms of four varieties of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.)显示文摘The study was conducted to assess the chemical composition of the haulms of 4 dual-purpose groundnut(Arachis hypogaea L.) varieties and their effects on the growth and hematology of Djallonke rams. The groundnut varieties were ICGV 97049(Obolo), ICGX SM 87057(Yenyawoso), RMP 12(Azivivi) and Manipinta. Rams(live weight 15.0 ± 3.0 kg) were randomly assigned to 4 sole groundnut haulm meal(GHM) treatments, with 4 rams each in an individual pen per treatment(total n = 16 rams). Samples of the groundnut haulms were milled and analyzed for crude protein(CP), neutral detergent fiber(NDF)and acid detergent fiber(ADF). The CP concentration was higher(P < 0.05) in Azivivi, Manipinta and Yenyawoso than in Obolo. The highest(P < 0.05) NDF and ADF fractions were obtained in Obolo. Whilst no significant difference was reported in total and daily dry matter(DM) intake among the varieties,CP,NDF and ADF intake all differed between Obolo and other varieties. The apparent nutrient digestibility did not differ(P> 0.05) when the Djallonke rams were fed the haulms. However, significant differences were observed in final live weight and average daily live weight gain. Rams fed the Yenyawoso variety had higher(P < 0.05) final live weight and average daily live weight gain compared with those fed Obolo and Azivivi varieties. Consumption of any of the 4 varieties of groundnut haulms by Djallonke rams did not have any harmful effect on their red and white blood cell numbers and hemoglobin concentration.The study revealed that the different varieties of groundnut haulms differ in nutrient composition and also affect the growth performance of the rams.
