1Self-configuring universal linear optical component[Invited]显示文摘We show how to design an optical device that can perform any linear function or coupling between inputs and outputs.This design method is progressive,requiring no global optimization.We also show how the device can configure itself progressively,avoiding design calculations and allowing the device to stabilize itself against drifts in component properties and to continually adjust itself to changing conditions.This self-configuration operates by training with the desired pairs of orthogonal input and output functions,using sets of detectors and local feedback loops to set individual optical elements within the device,with no global feedback or multiparameter optimization required.Simple mappings,such as spatial mode conversions and polarization control,can be implemented using standard planar integrated optics.In the spirit of a universal machine,we show that other linear operations,including frequency and time mappings,as well as nonreciprocal operation,are possible in principle,even if very challenging in practice,thus proving there is at least one constructive design for any conceivable linear optical component;such a universal device can also be self-configuring.This approach is general for linear waves,and could be applied to microwaves,acoustics,and quantum mechanical superpositions.David A.B.Miller 2013Photonics Research2013,1,1:10
2Looking at sound: optoacoustics with all-optical ultrasound detection显示文摘Originally developed for diagnostic ultrasound imaging,piezoelectric transducers are the most widespread technology employed in optoacoustic(photoacoustic)signal detection.However,the detection requirements of optoacoustic sensing and imaging differ from those of conventional ultrasonography and lead to specifications not sufficiently addressed by piezoelectric detectors.Consequently,interest has shifted to utilizing entirely optical methods for measuring optoacoustic waves.All-optical sound detectors yield a higher signal-to-noise ratio per unit area than piezoelectric detectors and feature wide detection bandwidths that may be more appropriate for optoacoustic applications,enabling several biomedical or industrial applications.Additionally,optical sensing of sound is less sensitive to electromagnetic noise,making it appropriate for a greater spectrum of environments.In this review,we categorize different methods of optical ultrasound detection and discuss key technology trends geared towards the development of all-optical optoacoustic systems.We also review application areas that are enabled by all-optical sound detectors,including interventional imaging,non-contact measurements,magnetoacoustics,and nondestructive testing.Georg Wissmeyer Miguel A.Pleitez Amir Rosenthal Vasilis Ntziachristos 2018Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1:9
3Characteristics of the internal waves and their effects on the sound transmission in the Midst of the Yellow Sea显示文摘In the late summer of 1996, a combined acoustics and physical oceanography experiment (YS96) was performed in the midst of the Yellow Sea. Here the oceanographic data are analyzed and the internal wave spectrum is constructed. It shows that the internal wavesare dominated by the first modes and the spectral density is approximately proportional to w-s/z. Based on the internal wave spectrum, a model of the induced sound-speed distribution is developed, and computer simulation is conducted for CW signal propagation by using the PE method. 4Development of a script of phonemically balanced monosyllable lists of Mandarin-Chinese显示文摘Objectives To develop a set of monosyllable audiometry test material that can be used in speech recognition testing in Mandarin Chinese. Materials and Methods In an effort to improve reliability and efficiency in clinical practice, a set of 30 test lists of 25 monosyllable test items each was designed with consideration of the following: length of the list, phonemical balance (PB), word utility frequency, coverage of common words, and equivalency among lists. The 30 lists contained 750 monosyllabic words and were constructed on the basis of Chinese phoneme distribution probability summarized in the Manual of Acoustic. The occurrence incidence of the 22 consonants, 36 vowels, and 4 tones of the Chinese Mandarin characters in the 30 test lists were calculated. To achieve PB, 489 monosyllables were selected from the 2500 most commonly used Chinese characters and the 4000 most commonly used Chinese phrases to compile the 30 monosyllable test lists using a computer algorithm with manual adjustment. Results Thirty phonemical balanced word lists of common Mandarin Chinese monosyllabic words were compiled. Each list consisted of 25 monosyllables. A total of 489 phonemes (consonants, vowels and tones) were included in the set. 5Acoustic sound speed profile inversion based on orthogonal matching pursuit显示文摘The estimation of ocean sound speed profiles(SSPs)requires the inversion of an acoustic field using limited observations.Such inverse problems are underdetermined,and require regularization to ensure physically realistic solutions.The empirical orthonormal function(EOF)is capable of a very large compression of the data set.In this paper,the non-linear response of the sound pressure to SSP is linearized using a first order Taylor expansion,and the pressure is expanded in a sparse domain using EOFs.Since the parameters of the inverse model are sparse,compressive sensing(CS)can help solve such underdetermined problems accurately,efficiently,and with enhanced resolution.Here,the orthogonal matching pursuit(OMP)is used to estimate range-independent acoustic SSPs using the simulated acoustic field.The superior resolution of OMP is demonstrated with the SSP data from the South China Sea experiment.By shortening the duration of the training set,the temporal correlation between EOF and test sets is enhanced,and the accuracy of sound velocity inversion is improved.The SSP estimation error versus depth is calculated,and the 99%confidence interval of error is within±0.6 m/s.The 82%of mean absolute error(MAE)is less than 1 m/s.It is shown that SSPs can be well estimated using OMP.Qianqian Li Juan Shi Zhenglin Li Yu Luo Fanlin Yang Kai Zhang 2019Acta Oceanologica Sinica2019,38,11:4
6Wide bandwidth acoustic transmission via coiled-up metamaterial with impedance matching layers显示文摘Many acoustic metamaterials suffer from a narrow bandwidth transmission because of the impedance mismatch at the airmetamaterial interface. In this paper, a two-dimensional impedance-matched metamaterial with broadband transmission performance is investigated. The impedance matching layer is introduced for a gradient variation of effective impedance from the inlet of the unit to the outlet. The effective medium theory and corresponding effective model are used to explain the underlying mechanism. The improved energy transmission of our designs is demonstrated by experiment and numerical simulation within a broad frequency bandwidth over 6 kHz. 7A primary study of the acoustics of Chinese traditional theatrical buildings显示文摘The traditional performing arts and theatrical buildings in China can be traced back to a long history and were well developed during Song and Yuan Dynasties, 11th-14th centuries. Pavilion stage, opened on three sides and thrusting into the audience area, was unique and the most popular form in the open-air theatres, the courtyard theatres, and the indoor theatres up to the present day. As the traditional Chinese opera is performed in an abstract way, no stage settings are required and used. Therefore, the pavilion stage including the flat or domed ceiling and the back wall is virtually functioned as a reflective shell, which increases the early reflections and also intensifies the sound in the audience area. Meanwhile, it provides sufficient self-support to the performers. 9Non-linear acoustic radiation by an underwater vibrating spherical shell显示文摘This paper deals with the non-linear propagation of sound waves radiated by a thin spherical shell vibrating in ideal lluid. Non-linear sound field is obtained by the method of renormalization proposed by Kelly and Nayfeh. Considering the acoustic load, we use Junger and his cooperators’ spherical function expan8ion to obtain the structural response of the spherical shell. By combining both of the above methods, the structural response, the waveshape before the formation of shock wave and the first two order waves (including the 1st and 2nd harmonics, sum and difference frequency waves) are calculated respectively. They vary with frequency, distance and directions. 11Bark-Wavelet Analysis and Hilbert -Huang Transform for Underwater Target Recognition显示文摘Recognizing the underwater targets by the radiated noise information is one of the most significant subjects in the area of underwater acoustics. Based on the theory of auditory perception, a novel recognition approach which consists of the algorithms of Bark-wavelet analysis, Hilbert-Huang transform and support vector machine is proposed. 12Phonon imaging in 3D with a fibre probe显示文摘We show for the first time that a single ultrasonic imaging fibre is capable of simultaneously accessing 3D spatial information and mechanical properties from microscopic objects.The novel measurement system consists of two ultrafast lasers that excite and detect high-frequency ultrasound from a nano-transducer that was fabricated onto the tip of a single-mode optical fibre.A signal processing technique was also developed to extract nanometric in-depth spatial measurements from GHz frequency acoustic waves,while still allowing Brillouin spectroscopy in the frequency domain.Label-free and non-contact imaging performance was demonstrated on various polymer microstructures.This singular device is equipped with optical lateral resolution,2.5μm,and a depth-profiling precision of 45 nm provided by acoustics.The endoscopic potential for this device is exhibited by extrapolating the single fibre to tens of thousands of fibres in an imaging bundle.Such a device catalyses future phonon endomicroscopy technology that brings the prospect of label-free in vivo histology within reach.Salvatore La Cavera III Fernando Perez-Cota Richard JSmith Matt Clark 2021Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,6:2
13Acoustofluidic separation of cells andparticles显示文摘Acoustofluidics,the integration of acoustics and microfluidics,is a rapidly growing research field that is addressing challenges in biology,medicine,chemistry,engineering,and physics.In particular,acoustofluidic separation of biological targets from complex fluids has proven to be a powerful tool due to the label-free,biocompatible,and contact-free nature of the technology.By carefully designing and tuning the applied acoustic field,cells and other bioparticles can be isolated with high yield,purity,and biocompatibility.Recent advances in acoustofluidics,such as the development of automated,point-of-care devices for isolating sub-micron bioparticles,address many of the limitations of conventional separation tools.More importantly,advances in the research lab are quickly being adopted to solve clinical problems.In this review article,we discuss working principles of acoustofluidic separation,compare different approaches of acoustofluidic separation,and provide a synopsis of how it is being applied in both traditional applications,such as blood component separation,cell washing,and fluorescence activated cell sorting,as well as emerging applications,including circulating tumor cell and exosome isolation.Mengxi Wu Adem Ozcelik Joseph Rufo Zeyu Wang Rui Fang Tony Jun Huang 2019Microsystems & Nanoengineering2019,5,1:2
14Low-frequency acoustic Fabry–Pérot fiber sensor based on a micromachined silicon nitride membrane显示文摘In this Letter, a low-frequency acoustic sensor based on an extrinsic Fabry–Pérot(FP) interferometer with a silicon nitride(Si3N4) membrane is demonstrated. Using micromachining techniques, the 800 nm thick Si3N4 membrane is deposited on an 8 mm × 8 mm × 400 μm silicon(Si) substrate. All the assembly procedures of the sensor are focused on the substrate to avoid any damage to the membrane itself, compared to general membrane transfer methods. The frequency response of the proposed sensor is discussed theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor exhibits an excellent flat response to the tested acoustic frequency range of 1 Hz to 250 Hz. 16On the road to Mandalay: contribution to the Microhyla Tschudi, 1838(Amphibia: Anura: Microhylidae) fauna of Myanmar with description of two new species显示文摘We prese nt a morphological and molecular assessment of the Microhyla fauna of Myanmar based on new collections from central (Magway Division) and northem (Kachin State) parts of the country. In total, six species of Microhyla are documented, including M. berdmorei, M. heymonsi, M. butleri, M. mukhlesuri and two new species described from the semi-arid savarma-like plains of the middle part of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) River Valley. We used a 2 481 bp long 12S rRNA- 16S rRNA fragment of mtDNA to hypothesize gen ealogical relati on ships within Microhyla. We applied an in teg rati ve taxonomic approach combining molecular, morphological, and acoustic lines of evidenee to evaluate the taxonomic status of Mya nmar Microhyla. We dem on strated that the newly discovered populations of Microhyla sp. from the Magway Division represent two yet undescribed species. These two new sympatric species are assigned to the M. achatina species group, with both adapted to the seas on ally dry environments of the Irrawaddy Valley. Microhyla fodiens sp. nov. is a stout-bodied species with a remarkably enlarged shovel-like outer metatarsal tubercle used for burrowing and is highly diverge nt from other know n congeners (P-distancea8.8%). Microhyla irrawaddy sp. nov. is a small-bodied slender frog reconstructed as a sister species to M. kodial from southern India (P-distance=5.3%);however, it clearly differs from the latter both in external morphology and advertisement call parameters. Microhyla mukhlesuri is reported from Myanmar for the first time. We further discuss the morphological diag no sties and biogeography of Microhyla species recorded in Myanmar.Nikolay A. 19Acoustics Based Monitoring and Diagnostics for the Progressive Deterioration of Helical Gearboxes显示文摘Gearbox condition monitoring(CM)plays a significant role in ensuring the operational reliability and efficiency of a wide range of critical industrial systems such as wind turbines and helicopters.Accurate and timely diagnosis of gear faults will improve the maintenance of gearboxes operating under sub-optimal conditions,avoid excessive energy consumption and prevent avoidable damages to systems.This study focuses on developing CM for a multi-stage helical gearbox using airborne sound.Based on signal phase alignments,Modulation Signal Bispectrum(MSB)analysis allows random noise and interrupting events in sound signals to be suppressed greatly and obtains nonlinear modulation features in association with gear dynamics.MSB coherence is evaluated for selecting the reliable bi-spectral peaks for indication of gear deterioration.A run-to-failure test of two industrial gearboxes was tested under various loading conditions.Two omnidirectional microphones were fixed near the gearboxes to sense acoustic information during operation.It has been shown that compared against vibration based CM,acoustics can perceive the responses of vibration in a larger areas and contains more comprehensive and stable information related to gear dynamics variation due to wear.Also,the MSB magnitude peaks at the first three harmonic components of gear mesh and rotation components are demonstrated to be sufficient in characterizing the gradual deterioration of gear transmission.Consequently,the combining of MSB peaks with baseline normalization yields more accurate monitoring trends and diagnostics,allowing the gradual deterioration process and gear wear location to be represented more consistently.Kaibo Lu James Xi Gu Hongwei Fan Xiuquan Sun Bing Li Fengshou Gu 2021Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering2021,34,4:1
20Exploiting sound for emerging applications of extracellular vesicles显示文摘Extracellular vesicles are nano-to micro-scale,membrane-bound particles released by cells into extracellular space,and act as carriers of biomarkers and therapeutics,holding promising potential in translational medicine.However,the challenges remain in handling and detecting extracellular vesicles for disease diagnosis as well as exploring their therapeutic capability for disease treatment.Here,we review the recent engineering and technology advances by leveraging the power of sound waves to address the challenges in diagnostic and therapeutic applications of extracellular vesicles and biomimetic nanovesicles.We first introduce the fundamental principles of sound waves for understanding different acoustic-assisted extracellular vesicle technologies.We discuss the acoustic-assisted diagnostic methods including the purification,manipulation,biosensing,and bioimaging of extracellular vesicles.Then,we summarize the recent advances in acoustically enhanced therapeutics using extracellular vesicles and biomimetic nanovesicles.Finally,we provide perspectives into current challenges and future clinical applications of the promising extracellular vesicles and biomimetic nanovesicles powered by sound.Zhuhao Wu Hongwei Cai Chunhui Tian Zheng Ao Lei Jiang Feng Guo 2024Nano Research2024,17,2:1
